I can't tell anything from those graphs, so its still loud?
Can any actual owners even from last gen comment on fan noise and temps?
    Thanks.

I had both 970m and 980m, in stress mode it was pretty hot for sure (don't really know the temps but too hot to touch the laptop at the back for example), and the noise you hear the fans but it's not that horrible, the sound is not so high and doesn't disturb that much in my opinion, you just hear fans at high speed.

I have it - no issues. I game with headphones, however. It's certainly "loud" and not quiet - but what you'd expect. Fantastic laptop. Can't believe it was just $1700 for the performance and I love the weight for gaming while traveling.

My ARK: Survival Evolved tribe-mate bought the same laptop and we just gamed together in San Diego earlier this week - both of ours had zero defects from the factory. They're no MacBook Pros in terms of build quality but damn good for the money.

So I updated to bios version 203. I previously had 202. Aside from the new ROG logo, what are the other improvements?

    Nice!
Congrats on the new laptop any chance you can post a video of the fan noise while gaming or under load?
    It would be greatly appreciated.
Overall it has a lot to offer for the price but I'm a bit concerned the fans might be a bit too much, I realize thinner laptops are louder but noise levels can be managed if done right.
    Thanks

I have uploaded two videos to YouTube. This site has *****ed at me in the past for posting links to my stuff so I cannot link it.

I owned a ASUS G751JY-DH71 last year and it's about the same in terms of noise. Standard gaming laptop stuff.

The GL502VS on Amazon is listed as 4.9 lbs.. But the notebookcheck review lists it as over 5 lbs.. Which is correct?

I just weighed my GL502VS-DB71 alone (battery installed, but no AC adapter) and it's 5 lbs. 12 oz. according to my USPS digital scale. Pretty crazy considering ASUS claimed it was under 5 lbs.! Still not complaining. Love this thing.

Before BIOS update 300, my GL502VT ran very hot, but not too loud.
Now, it runs very loud, but noticeably cooler, still hot though. I'm fine with the noise though - it's quiet under non-gaming loads and I'd rather have it blast the fans than shorten the life of my computer by roasting its insides.

I do wish that ASUS supported some sort of customized fan control/curves.

    Is there a link?
I can only find vids of the old models.

How hot did it get then and how is it now?

Also, I've been reading some contradicting reviews. Some say the top lid is plastic, other say it's actual metal. Any input?

The frame around the screen is plastic, but the back lid (with the neon orange ROG logo and lines) is metal.

Also, there is a stripe of plastic on the top edge of the back of the lid, but the rest is metal.

I see, what about the bottom panel's temps? I've read that they can reach all the way up to 70*C and that worries me slightly. Did they also improve?

If you check youtube review videos for the 970 and 980 card models, you'll find the decibels that the fans reach! Having said that, I have the 980m model and the fans are very quiet under normal mode and in game mode you hear them, but they're not that loud (at least to me)!

This link shows that they reach around 40 to 50decibels

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Strix-GL502VS-Notebook-Review.171567.0.html

The newer models should be similar unless they changed the fans or the card ran much cooler!

    Hello, i am bought gl502vy-ds74 ( with 256 gb m.2 sata 1900$) and all is great.but when i open hwinfo and see pci e slots, there is only 2x pci e x1, 1x pci e x2, 1x pci e x16.

but in previous answers guy shows his info and there 1x pci x4 instead of my 1xpci e x2.

also i used some different softs like astra32 it also shows 1 slot x2 (using 5gb of 8gb, while pci e x1 uses 2.5 of 8)

idk what to do. anybody else who had this problem? i dont change anything , bios doesn't upgraded. so can it be some bios settings or soft issue, or i see x2 because for now i have m.2 sata ssd? or there is nothing what can i do?

Is there an actual issue? Is something not working on your system hardware-wise?

Because I'm not sure what to make of everything you've just written.. I guess for now I can just let you know that your M.2 SSD also uses a PCIe slot, if that helps you somehow.

because i see that there must be one pci e x4 slot for samsung pro 950 ssd( which uses all 4 channel i guess). But with my configuration samsung ssd will use x2 configurations(also astra32 show me pci 2.0 express) . does'nt it ? sorry for my english.all we know asus upgrade guide there are say about support pci 3.0 x4.
And i want to know, is this issue for me?However my hardware have pci e x2 slot in info(hwinfo.astra32) .is it bios settings issue or strictly hardware? I want to use all 4 channels from samsung ssd if i bought( can somebody explain me?

Also gtx 980 use only 8 channel instead 16.why? is this configurable?.

So I got my GL502VT yesterday. Aside from a bit of trouble with Windows 10 (It didn't want to start installing until I turned PXE to legacy - before that it was BSODing), I've also noticed that under load there is a slight tick every now and again from the adapter. It works properly and doesn't really get hot, hell, I doubt I could even classify it as warm. It remains at slightly above ambient even when playing CS:GO (CPU at 60% usage and GPU at 100% usage due to no V-sync (300fps)). So yeah, that normal?

Hi guys, I have a problem with my GL502VT
Whenever I play Overwatch and the temperature reach 70oC, my computer crash and start making a weird noise and the only thing that can solve it is turning off the computer by the power button. And the other thing is, even when I set the quality to medium ( I was setting it to high, I don't think that will be a problem for a 970m), it still reach 70oC easily and then crash.
I have tried to clean install my graphic drivers using DDU but the problem still exists. I also undervolted my CPU by -120mV using ThrottleStop 8.10, I was using Afterburner to overclock my GPU but because of the problem, I have turned off the Afterburner but the problem is still there.
Do you guys have any ideas ? I expected this machine to run smoothly with games like this so I feel very disappointed because of the crashing
    Thanks guys !

I've also experienced one or two of these crashes (frozen screen with a loud noise), when I overdid it either with undervolting, or overclocking the GPU. Try removing the undervolt, reset the settings to default. Also, keep Afterburner off for now. After doing this, use your system normally for a couple of days and see if it crashes. If it stops crashing, you've found the problem and you can start experimenting again.

Another thing you could try, if the crashes persist, is re-installing (or just completely removing) Adobe flash player. It used to freeze one of my other systems the same way as you described.

Wow, really? The G751JY was easily the quietest 980m laptop on the market. I almost feel as if your G751 might have been faulty.

I'm considering picking up one of these machines - but I don't use headphones. Instead, I tend to play in the living room with one earbud in, while my SO watches TV or reads, etc.

Fan noise is a big deal to some of us. In a lot of ways, subjective reports from people who have owned multiple gaming laptops seems best.

Also, what's your youtube name? Would like to see your vids.

I'm so torn between this and the Clevo equivalent. The Asus wins on weight but the Clevo wins with cooling, both equally important. Any arguments for the Asus?

970M version has good temps. Mine stays around 79*C max for the GPU and 85*C max for the CPU

I'd say they're pretty similar on the cooling front. With the ASUS running quieter.

The Clevo's advantage (for me), is I much prefer the less ostentatious styling (those damn ornage WASD keys!).

Looks like I'm in the wrong thread! I thought this was about the newer pascal ones, but you're still right! If I do get one of these ill probably have to make some aesthetic modifications before I bring it into the office.

Ugh you're telling me. Though I don't mind the logo itself (and the keyboard - too much), the trims on the sides just makes it seem like those cringy IGNs you see in MMOs like xXAsusROGXx.

If I were to get this (or the Pascal equivalent) I'd probably just black out the orange "trim" if you can call it that, on the sides of the keyboard and the on the monitor back panel. Maybe that might make it slightly more professional?

On a side note - Reviews say fans are always on but from what I am seeing, they turn off around 30*C CPU temps. Though that requires full idle

What happened to me is that I plugged the bootable usb drive (with win 10 on it), restarted the computer and hit ESC key many times straight away, then a little window appeared asking if I wanted to boot on the usb or to go in the bios. Hope it helps

Yeah, this worked the second time I tried it on a different usb drive. Reinstalling windows seems to have fixed the problem of the screen not waking up when I just close the lid without shutting off the laptop.

Has anyone had a run in with Power limitations on this lappy? I noticed for a second that GPU-Z my perf cap reason was Pwr and downclocked my 970M by 30MHz - I'll admit it was under heavy gaming load but it got me curious - I cannot replicate it.

Not sure about this laptop but I remember Alienware having problems with the 180W power supply with the 980m. I hope that's not the case with the Gl502 as well. But with the 980m and 1070 version of the notebook, I would have liked a 230W adapter like its big brother. I wonder if the 230W power supply from the g752 can work with the GL502 as well?

From what I know, Asus use a unified power adapter on their G series so yes, it should be doable in theory.

    Hello, I need some help.

I have the asus gl502vt from some months now and I am happy with it. Yesterday i decided to clean it cause I saw temperatures were increasing and thought it could have been the dust. There wasn't any warranty sticker on the back so I decided to just open it, clean and close it. I did it successfully but the last screw on the left bottom corner unexpectedly damaged the plastic. It's just an aesthetic damage. I didn't touch anything else (ram, fans, motherboard etc..).

The laptop has still more than 1 year of warranty. If something happens in the future may i count on the warranty or am I "screwed" due to this little aesthetic damage? I have bought the laptop from Amazon and as much as I know they also have a repair service.

Hi, I am looking to buy the GL502VT-DS71 (with the empty M.2 SSD slot). I was wondering if the following SSD would be compatible with it.

    Samsung 950 PRO OEM M.2 256GB Solid State Drive NVMe PCIE 3.0 x4 2280 (SM951 SSD)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, some GL502VT models actually come with a SM951 which is essentially the same as the 950 Pro

How are the external temperatures on this laptop. I've heard that its able to keep the internal temperatures at a reasonable place, but after looking at the notebookcheck review for the 970m version they said that the case got to 70*c in some places! That can't be good for the life of the laptop, does the outside of your notebook get that hot?

I haven't had issues related to external temps - after the BIOS update (ver. 300) temps are a fair bit lower. Not to mention, the plastic can withstand temperatures above 100*C so it's not an issue.

On a side note - can anyone do me a favor? Go to task manager, under start-up, what is your "Last BIOS Time"? I'm trying to figure out if 12.5 seconds is too high. I have a Legacy Windows 10 install.
