Legacy or UEFI? Do you have a HDD?

I have no idea I haven't changed anything since I bought it.

    There is a 256gb SSD + 1to HDD.

The 850 EVO replaces your HDD whereas the 950 Pro is put in a separate slot.

Thank you for your reply but I guess you have a mistake. Both of them put in M.2 slot but one of them M.2sata other one is M.2 PCI express. I wonder is this laptop support both M.2 sata and M.2 PCI express?

Oh, I just imagined he was talking about the 2.5' 850 EVO, yes. Both should theoretically work but it's best to consult the manual

My decision to buy the GL502VT was somewhat of a rush job. I bought the base model (1TB HDD, 12GB RAM) at a local Best Buy when my first choice (the Gigabyte Aero 14) came in defective.

Of course, a 5400RPM 1TB HDD is not very good on a gaming laptop.

However, I'm reluctant to upgrade anything. The computer's left hinge has a small gap, and when that gap developed, the computer clicked when opening and closing. The clicking has stopped, but the gap concerns me and I'm worried that I'll need to warranty replace it eventually if that balloons into something worse.

Which leads me to the question - does upgrading the HDD to an SSD, or adding an SSD to the M.2 slot, void the warranty?

    Hi.

So I bought this laptop (1070, with 256ssd) and used it for a week and here is what I have to say for now.

    1. fingerprints magnet - as you all probably know by now
    2. battery is disappointing, 3hours top of doing nothing
    3. total beast when it comes to gaming, awesome screen and view, never going below 70fps in all games, epic settings.
    4. ****-tons of bloatware.. so useless, wasting my time removing all this ****...

    from now ill elaborate more
    5. This laptop's adapter has 180watt output (9.23A, 19.5V), while the laptop requires ~183 at max performance (9.5A?)..
the result? battery discharge while plugged, which is unacceptable! I mean, losing 10% battery after an hour of gaming? really??
What will happen in 2 years? When my battery will last ~10minutes, I wouldnt be able to get it on...

    6. Tempratures - a bit high. nothing unusual though.. people are whining about ~85 degrees. I played overwatch on ultra, and GTA V on ultra, and my GPU reached 84c top. which is fine. fans are loud, yes, but hey, thats a gaming laptop...
keyboard is not getting hot where the fingers are, which is ok.

For now, I returned the laptop to ASUS. I explained that a discharging battery while being plugged is a deal breaker.
they think this issue is related to the machine and this morning they called and said they are replacing my laptop to a brand new one.

If the second laptop has this same issue, ill definitely ask for a refund.. this issue is a deal-breaker for me.

Anyone experienced the same problem? did asus solve this?

I've seen other people talking about the battery discharge while plugged in, specifically on the version with the gtx1070.

I have the 980m version of this laptop. I haven't really played too much on my laptop but I figure that 180W is not enough for the 980m either. I maxed out GTA 5 which caused the game to crash on a few occasions but I can't be sure if it was a power issue. I know that Alienware had problems pairing 180W adapters with the 980m. Unfortunately, I overlooked this issue when I first got the laptop so I can't return it now.

I have the same model (G502VS) and no issue at all about the battery while gaming, still around 100% even after few hours of games...
Bought it in France, maybe there is a difference ?

how many watts your adapter can supply?
    mine could do 180 (19.5volt, 9.23amp)

btw - i've returned the laptop for a refund.. now i cant find a similar preformance & priced laptop (except for clevo, but no warranty in my country)

Weird. I've talked to few more people with that exact problem. One of them made a very nice review on youtube regarding this laptop.
He did notice the issue and stated Alienware used to have this problem too back on the 970M machines.
A solution was to replace the power adapter.

When I sent my unit to ASUS lab, they said the unit was defective and did not replace my power adapter.

Hi, I have an Asus GL502VT with the gtx 970m 3gb vram and 16gb of ram (8gb soldered + 8gb in one slot). I wanted to know if I can replace the 8gb in the slot with 1 single 16gb ram to reach 24gb of total ram. Is it possible? 'Cause Asus official website says it can go "up to 16gb" but many sites say the contrary (included Notebookcheck) and there are a lot of versions with 24gb of ram and gtx 970m 3gb. Thank you!

I can't warrant safety of OC, there are always potential issues when running components outside published specification, but I haven't had problems.

All I can personally say is that of the last 5 laptops I have OC'd the display panel (Asus G750JW, G750JX, G750JH, MSI G72, GT80. Panels: Chi Mei, AUO, Samsung) from 60hz up to 100hz I haven't had any fail on me.

I recommend only doing it for games / apps that can run their FPS at that OC refresh rate - otherwise there isn't much point.

I also recommend using something like Rivatuner (RTSS) to limit FPS to refresh rate, that reduces load on CPU / GPU as well as reducing tearing, simultaneously reducing heat and potentially fan speed / noise.

Some panels won't OC far, the 17.3"/18.4" have done best, but even then I had one that would only OC to 70hz (AUO).

15.6" panels don't OC more than a few hz - so that might be your limit.

Be sure to know the procedure for setting the refresh, and ability to recover from that setting back to defaults.

In Windows if the screen won't sync at a test refresh rate, then wait for it to fall back to the default, if it doesn't then power off with the power button and when powered off, power up again and it should run at default refresh again.

    Have fun :)

Note that Intel's Control Panel is still broken for custom refresh setting / saving last I checked, so you can only do this while in dGPU mode where the Nvidia Control panel controls the internal display.

A little update on my gl502 (970m) after 7 months of use:

    1. 2 out of the 3 usb 3.0 ports are not working. 1 of them was dead on arrival, the second one died yesterday out of no reason. Can't use a keyboard and mouse simultaneously anymore.
    2. trackpad is acting up, with the right click button refusing to work sometimes and leaving me with tapping the right side with 2 fingers instead
    3. Coil whine is annoying as hell once you hear it. Especially when you're browsing the web or doing something that doesn't require the fans to kick in.
    4. Heat build-up is too high above the keyboard - makes me worried about the components inside, who knows, maybe this screwed up the ports

Unfortunately I bought it overseas, but got extended warranty from hidevolution. Already contacted them, we'll see how it goes.
Long term rating - 3/5. I'm jumping to the new alienware or razer blade after getting rid of this crap, hope to see better build quality there.

I have the 980m version GL502VY (got it in June) and it gets super hot above the keyboard as well. Also, the AC adapter gets extremely hot to the point that I can't touch it. I don't know if that is normal. The screen also has a pressure mark. I heard a lot of good things about Asus laptops prior to purchasing but I guess that only really applied to their 17 inch laptops. Now that I think about, I should have gone with Alienware or Sager.

From what I can deduce, the hotspot is caused by the VRM cooling - there is a large heatpipe running over the VRMs of the GPU and CPU and those do tend to put out quite a bit of heat as well. You could update your BIOS to ver. 300 and that reduces the heat quite a bit but at the expense of fan noise. To give you an idea - when using ver. 300 I was getting quite a bit of noise and had to turn up my game sound to overpower it. With ver. 203 - it's quite a bit quieter and in most games I don't even notice it over my AC or skype call.

As for the adapter - the 970M and 980M versions of the GL502 use the same one - the 980M is just more powerful and thus more power-hungry. That is usually the case with high end laptop adapters - they are either massive or run warm - hell, the Blade 14's adapter is capable of burning you at max load from what I've seen.

Yes, I have bios 203. I don't mind the fan noise as long as things are cool. I have now undervolted my cpu so while gaming, both cpu and gpu are just below 80 Celsius. Before this, my cpu was hitting 99-100 Celsius and throttling. However while gaming when plugged in, the laptop doesn't charge. In fact, my battery gets drained little by little. If I'm playing for about 2-3 hours straight on a full charge, I get about half of the battery remaining when I'm done. I don't know if this is normal. I just think, the 980m version should have had a beefier adapter.

interesting, as this is the same chassis as my gl502vm.
    Do you game a lot?
    keep adequate ventilation underneath?
do you carry it around from place to place, or on desk most of the time?

you can just unplug the battery connector. no need to remove the whole thing.

    it should still power up.

are you trying to extend battery life? It will keep decaying no matter what

I have the same laptop model and today (26.03) the audio sound began to shutter. I first updated the sound driver, thought the problem was there, but it turned out that the sound shutter appears only with the power cable plugged in. Without connected cable the sound works fine. what could be the problem? Tried reassembling power adaptor with cable, changed to another wall socket nothing helped.
