Looks like Best Buy added the model GL502VT-DS71 for $1399. The one with the IPS display, 16gb ram and 1tb 7200rpm hd.
Still waiting on a review of the GL502VY-DS71 to see if I want to spend the extra cash.

is the PWM flickering bad on the VT model? Notebookcheck says it happens on all brightness settings except maximum, and sensitive users will notice it for sure.

i have a few questions, i hope i am not repeating questions here.
1.the review on notebookcheck measured pretty high response times higher/almost identical to the DELL XPS 15..i know that its not the same level of laptop(both ways) but a lot of people are complaining about ghosting effect while gaming on the dell(touch and non touch), so...what do you think?
2.do you think its wise to buy this laptop now when nvidia new pascal gpu's are around the corner?
3.on the keyboard next to the backspace (numpad area) there is a button with the asus rog logo on it , what does it do?(is it a num lk key, end key,app trigger key or just a macro?
4.when you open the lid of the laptop does it cover the vents(not cover cover, just kind of like in the g501 that there is a little space between the vent and the screen (if so it is great because than you dont have to worry that you might block the air coming out with a wall, a cable ,papers and other staff(you got the point(i hope))))
5.last question =) i am struggling to decide which one to chose the g501 or the g502, any opinions? (i am a student(about to become one) so i think mobility is kind of important...but the performance of the gtx980(vy) is so much better than the 960 so it makes my decision really hard)
sorry for my not so good and not so bad english, thank you for your time -
2. I believe the GTX 900 series GPUs that come with this laptop at the moment are sufficient for FHD gaming on ultra settings. Should you wish to go for the 4k version, then the pascal GPUs are a must. Also, think about the price. Look at the desktop variants of pascal GPUs at the moment - they're priced ridiculously high. Same could go for laptops, as they will also ship with the exact same GPUs, and you're probably going to have to wait half a year for them.
3. It's a macro, although I haven't really used it yet. All I know is that if you install ASUS gaming center, the button will be set to launch this app. Haven't really looked into how to configure the button's action on your own yet.
4. Nope, it does not cover/overlay the vents nor does it have any impact on the cooling.
5. It really depends on what you're going to use the laptop for. If you wish to play demanding games on it, G501's 960M really cannot be compared to GL502's 970M/980M. The 970M is roughly twice as powerful as the 960M and the 980M is about 25-30% more powerful than the 970M. As for other aspects, I suggest you compare trustworthy reviews (e.g. notebookcheck) of both laptops to see which one suits you the best. -
Just waiting for the GL502VY (980m) reviews lol. I hope those who have one out there share their thoughts here.

I ordered the GL502VY-DS74 a few days ago and currently waiting for its arrival. I noticed that it's listed as having a 180W power supply. Is that enough for a 980m? I know that Alienware had some problems with 180W power adaptors with the 980m. Also, the 256gb ssd that it comes with is apparently SATA and not PCIE although it does support pcie nvme ssds.
Originally, I was going to buy the Sager NP8658 but I eventually settled with this Asus. It's too early to tell anything but I'm interested in knowing how well this laptop competes with that NP8658. -

Wanting to pull the trigger on the GL502VY/980m, but since I tend to keep my machines for about 5 years (my current rig is the G74sx i7 2xxx, 560m from 2011), I would really like confirmed Thunderbolt 3 support. I know that the specs do not specifically state it ("USB C Gen 2, USB 3.1"), but there was mention a few pages back of a firmware upgrade which unlocked the ability on an MSI machine that was also listed as only USB 3.1 Gen 2.
Checking if anyone that's received their GL502VY has been able to do a deeper hardware check and confirm whether or not it's at least TB3 'ready' or similar. My other choice right now is the Alienware 15 R2, even if it only has a 970m 3GB as an option, it's a bit more future proof than just having the 980m 4 or 8GB, as I can always connect to an external housing. However, I'm worried that Alienware's Graphics Amplifier enclosure is proprietary, and that I won't be able to use something like a Razer Core or even another generic enclosure with the right specs whenever those are released.
Option 3 is to wait... does anyone know if there are any major releases on the horizon?
Much appreciated - would be great to know before dropping the better part of 2 grand -
Only the GL702 will have TB3 and ROG XG Station 2 connectivity.
If you want want something for 5 years, I don't know of anything shipping now that I would recommend... it's just an off time to be purchasing.
Any laptop you get now, with Maxwell / Skylake, will be a stop gap until Pascal and next gen Kabylake w/laptop Series 200 motherboard chipset's arrive. -
I also keep my laptops for many years, the one I currently have is 6 years old, but as much as you want to future proof, there's always something better around the corner! No one knows when the laptops with 1080m will come out and how much they will cost, it could be as late as the holidays! If you need a laptop now, you might as well get the GL502, I think it's the best one in its class for the money!

Hi, do you guys have the model of the Samsung ips panel as I'm thinking of ordering one to replace my TN panel. I have read and saw that there are a few samsung IPS panel model listed in this forum.

-
Mine is on the TN panel and it looks a bit washed out. Anyone can provide the model as I don't want to order the wrong screen.

Yes, that one!
Thanks, didn't realize link wasn't working!

I picked up a open box from BestBuy today for $975. Laptop is in perfect condition. BestBuy has new ones on sale at $1099.
The TN panel is not so bad, definitely not up to an IPS panel but easily usable.
Dropped in a Samsung EVO M2 250GB SSD and it's flying. Definitely think this is the best value laptop atm.Time Lord, WandererLife and hmscott like this. -
recently ordered this laptop, should get it delivered within the week. it will be my first asus system so im pretty excited about it.
decided to go with asus this time because my previous msi ge70 barely lasted 2 years before it got that corrupted bios/motherboard issue. After using msi laptops for the past 4 years, this made me lose confidence in their systems. -
just verified with Best buy. The cheaper model GL502VT-BSI7N27 is using the IPS panel, not TN.

The model GL502VT-BSI7N27 is the lowest priced model, and finally it looks like BB took down the IPS references in their online description, now it just says Full HD LED Backlit:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...-plastic/5090905.p?id=bb5090905&skuId=5090905
" 15.6" Full HD display
The 1920 x 1080 resolution boasts impressive color and clarity. Energy-efficient LED backlight."
Under Specification tab:
"Display

Full HD Widescreen LED "
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-ro...ve-black/5373702.p?id=bb5373702&skuId=5373702
" 15.6" Full HD display
The 1920 x 1080 resolution boasts impressive color and clarity. IPS technology for wide viewing angles. Energy-efficient LED backlight.
But, the Asus Store listing for this one doesn't actually state it's got an IPS panel either, but it does say wide view, which has in the past been IPS - usually if it's IPS they will declare it because it's a sales advantage.

We'd hate to have you get a BestBuy model, get the TN display, and be disappointed it's not IPS.
TN panels work fine, and if saving $300+ is important to you, as it has been for me and many others, the TN panel is perfectly functional. $300 is 1/3 more in cost, not a small amount of $.
Whichever model you end up getting from Bestbuy - if you end up purchasing from Bestbuy, please let us know what kind of display it has and how you like itLast edited: Jun 21, 2016 - Display Type

Thanks. I guess the "expert" that I talked to at BB wasn't really an expert....
-
So that expert was working off of incorrect / old info. You could call him up and correct him, ask him to re-read the online listing again, as it has been corrected.
Again, TN isn't evil, it just has faded off angle viewing and in comparison to an IPS screen comes off as less vivid. Many of us have lived with TN panels for many years before IPS was available, and TN today is much better than it used to be -
I had the BB version for a few days, the TN panel wasn't bad but was pretty washed out. Probably just used to better panels for last few years.
But read a review on the notebook just yesterday, that brought up a great point. Especially when laptops on sale at BB. Point was that a good ips panel for this machine can be bought and had for just over $100. And also pointed out m.2 drives are cheap, plus the 128gb version is capacity lacking. So if you want this laptop, purchase at BB for $200-400 less than amazon, buy the ips panel and a 250-500 gb ssd, end up with better specs and still save $.
Probably more work than most would want to do. But it makes alot of sense. Plus as said, TN panel isn't bad at all, and for $100 (if you find it THAT bad) you can fix it easily.

Hi guys, so I got my GL502VY-DS74 few days back.
Right now I can say this is a great machine. I do experience thermal throttling while gaming, BUT since I game on a 2K external monitor (second screen only mode) with the graphics set to Ultra (Overwatch) and the machine can still keep up for nearly half an hour before being throttled, I suppose this is already a decent performance; otherwise when the graphics is set to High, the laptop temperature hardly got over 80 degree. Later I will try gaming without an external monitor to see how much this thing can handle. Meanwhile, if you guys want to ask me anything regarding the laptop I will try my best to deliverhmscott likes this. -
i) Open up the laptop to check how many RAM slots are available. According to Asus the VY comes with 2 instead of just 1 on the VT.
ii) Check whether there is G SYNC
iii) Battery life -
Hi guys, I was playing fallout 4 on ultra settings and using real temps to monitor the temperatures. After gaming, I saw that my cpu core 0 maximum log temps was at 95 degrees Celsius and gpu at 76 degrees Celsius. Are the temps acceptable?
Last edited: Jun 22, 2016 -
We're you streaming or something else in the background? And could you try another game?
Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk -
Nope, thats why I'm so puzzled. When running on high settings, the cpu temps were floating around 78 degrees and glue at 69 degrees which I think is still ok. When I did the fire strike test, the cpu temps were at max 84 degrees. Is this considered normal too?
One more thing, will the processor be damaged in the long run if the gaming temps are always so high. I understand that cpu throttle to dissipate heat if the temps are too high, but what is the acceptable temps?hmscott likes this. -
-
Okay, thanks for the tip
-
2) The box said this laptop has G-SYNC and there is a "Set up G-SYNC" section in NVIDIA control panel so yes!
3) So just now I detached the external monitor and power adapter, set screen brightness to 70 and power setting to high performance. After an hour of some web browsing and Youtube, power level went down to 73%. Then I played one game of Overwatch with graphics set to Ultra, after around 20 minutes battery quickly went down to 46%. I haven't tried to exhaust the battery yet but I guess it can stay up for around 4 hours of web browsing and an hour of light gaming, for more graphics demanding titles like Doom or Witcher 3 maybe way less than that.hmscott likes this. -
I'm currently waiting for my GL502VY to arrive. I'm mostly worried about the temps. I won't use external screens or anything. Are the temps acceptable or does it get too hot? Can you also confirm if the 256gb ssd is pcie or sata 3?
Also, the new mobile gpus will probably be out soon so that'll be a bummer if they come out around the time I get the laptop.hmscott likes this. -
I can't say for the SSD since I made a request to have a SS 950 EVO replace the original SSD.
As for the GPU, well for me I have been eyeing this laptop for quite a while, around 2 months back when it was first introduced in Indonesia and even before this thread was started. I believe I have read through most, if not all, comments and reviews about the GL502 that are available. I was sure about purchasing it back then, and I still am now. The new Pascal GPUs already came out, yes, but the earliest laptops carrying them most likely will come out in the holidays, since none of them were introduced during Computex (as far as I know of). That is six more months from now. Moreover, I believe the GTX 980M will still be able to put up decent performances for next year (and next next year even) titles. I doubt developers are able to/going to optimize their games for the new Pascal GPUs too soon. And I remember last year there were still laptops with the GTX 870M around, so the 980M will probably be relevant for quite some time.
In short, I believe GL502 is a good choice at the moment, but if you can hold off till end of the year then maybe not. -
I don't think anyone has brought this up before, but there are 2 new slim model laptops from MSI with TB3 and other nice features, a 15.6" and 17" model, the GS63 and GS73:

Hello guys, i am new of the forum. I ordered the laptop from Amazon but doing some research couldn't find anything on internet, just 2 or 3 reviews on Youtube and some videos posted by some of you who already own it (btw thanks!). I find curious that Asus didn't do a big event to launch this "cheapy" laptop and that makes me think that it could have some kind of well hidden issues.
Anyway i have a few questions cause at the moment i need help choosing between this Asus gl502vt and a Lenovo y700-15.
The Lenovo y700 costs 890€ (from Lenovo site) but it has an i5 6300hq, a gtx960m with 4gb ddr5, 16gb ddr4 2133mhz and 1tb 5400rpm (but i think it has also a slot for ssd) and an external dvd/rw. I have already tried the lenovo and it's quite good, has the probably best speakers and subwoofer (for a laptop), a good Ips screen, and performance were really good, even if it was the i7 6700hq i tested and i don't know how much difference could have with the i5 6300hq. The thing i liked most is that temperatures were on 60-65 and never above 70C both GPU and CPU.
The Asus gl502 i have ordered is on Amazon, costs 1380€, has a i7 6700hq, a gtx 970m with 3gb ddr5,16gb ddr4 2133mhz, 1tb 7200rpm + 128ssd, and no external dvd. I saw the screen is really good, even better than the Lenovo one, but the speaker sucks too much and has not a subwoofer, which is shamefull for this price. Anyway the retail price actually it's 1600€ since i found it at 1380 i think it's still a deal.
I wanted to ask you how are the internal temperatures of the Asus since i saw it always gets hot, above 75 but also read someone who got 80-90C, which i think it's too much and it's noot good for the laptop on long terms. I also have a cooling pad which can give a -7C but i prefer knowing that the laptop has no overheating issues. I won't use it with an external monitor anyway.
I wanted to ask you also if the bottom of the screen panel cover the vents and prevents the air to go out. It looked like so watching some videos.
I need this laptop for both gaming and video editing.
I think that the Lenovo is a really attractive laptop, very solid, good speakers and a really good price, the Asus with its orange color is not so attractive but it has a better hardware. It also costs much more but the thing that could prevent me for keeping it it's the overheat. What do you think could be the best choice?
PS: Sorry for my bad english
PS2: Forgot to ask: I overclocked the gtx960m +135mhz and got 10 fps more on games, how much good is the oc on the 970m?Last edited: Jun 25, 2016 -
I got my laptop this week from HID Evolution! Great and fast service btw! I got the GL502VY-DS71 model with the i7-6700HQ processor, GTX980M 4GB card, 16GB of ram DDR4, Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M2NVme PCIe, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB secondary drive, Killer Wireless N1535card and IC Diamond thermal paste on both cpu and gpu. After many days of having it and playing with it here are my thoughts to help anyone that might be interested in this model. Note: my previous laptop was an Asus Gh73Gh-A1 17inch.
- Laptop is beautiful in person and build quality is really good, almost no flex compared to my previous model.
- Took me a few days to get used to the matte screen, but very good quality, mine is an LG Philips. Some have Samsung screens with the 970M cards, I'm guessing I have the LG one because of G-Sync.
- The back of the screen cover is mostly made of metal, doesn't really cover the exhausts, they're under the screen, however its a fingerprint magnet. I'm happy there's a non metal part so I can open and close the screen without leaving any fingerprints. lol
- Fans under normal use, you cant really hear and you only notice them under heavy gaming load but are never too loud, which is important to me.
- Keyboard is great for both typing and gaming and you notice the 30 rollover feature with gaming, keys are precise and responsive. Love the red lights and can be adjusted in intensity. I always leave them full and the keyboard never gets too hot or anything like that.
- The laptop is not slanted forward like my previous one (ergonomic design) but it was still comfortable gaming on it.
- I was not impressed by the speakers, I find they don't get loud enough for my taste and no bass, however I use headphones all the time, so not a problem for me.
- Battery life is impressive, expect between 4-6 hours, depending on settings (screen brightness etc) on normal use.
- Laptop while gaming never got hotter than about 74-75 degrees Celsius for both gpu and cpu. I recommend getting the IC Diamond thermal paste. I undervolted the cpu yesterday, we'll see if temps go a bit down for cpu, but I'm happy with the temperatures. Temps under normal use are around 40-45 degrees Celsius for cpu and gpu. Room temperature is 27 degrees Celcius.
- Gaming experience is amazing, this thing handles anything I throw at it.
- When under load it gets hot in areas your hands wont touch while gaming, it's quite impressive how they managed the heat distribution/management for this size.
- The pcie ssd is blazing fast, from bootup to loading a game. I can't recommend this component enough!
- The Killer network card is amazing, it has it's own software so you can manage the packets for applications and performance.
- Laptop weighs half of my previous one and is easy to move around and carry, which is the main reason I got this one instead of another 17inch one.
Note: Windows 10 suggests using a PIN to login and if you use the PIN option and if you want to use the right side number pad to login, you always have to activate the num lock first (its a win10 bug), however there's a workaround for that: http://www.howtogeek.com/244606/how-to-enable-num-lock-automatically-when-your-computer-boots/
Modify the registry and do the weird trick they recommend, however you do NOT need to disable fast boot.
Can't think of anything else, if you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them. For its size, this thing is a beast and its only weakness in my eyes, is the speakers. For some, it might also be the lack of Thunderbolt 3.
Hope this post helps!Arondel, fw85, WandererLife and 1 other person like this. -
Hello everyone,
I just joined this forum, this is actually my first post on here
I just purchased this laptop a few hours ago actually. I've been eyeing a few gaming laptops for a while now, and when I went to my local electronics store I actually was planning on getting the MSI GS60 but the sales person advised me not to, and instead showed me the acer predator and the asus rog gl502. To make a long story short I ended up getting this in the end.
Flash forward to 6 hours from time of purchase, as I was installing some updated from the nvidia control panel/watching a few youtube videos, the laptop completely froze and started making this really loud buzzing noise. Has anyone had this problem before? is this going to be a recurring thing?hmscott likes this. -

If you are considering buying this laptop, I would really recommend you to quickly read through this thread or just use the search function to find what you're looking for, as every question you've asked has already been answered in depth here, some multiple times. It's a fair amount of money to spend for a laptop so you should really take your time to do some research to make sure you make a choice that suits you the best so I would recommend you to read this thread from the start and I can safely say that you'll find the answers you're looking for.Time Lord likes this. -
Hello, I am planning to buy Asus GL502. One of the vy or vt versions.
It seems that nearly everyone in this topic, has the vt version. And there is no vy review on the web, yet.
I want to buy a future proof notebook. But at the same time, battery life is also important for me. vt version has enough battery life for my needs. Altough Fox_Fire gave some important battery info about vy version which means vy version has nearly same battery time with vt, I still want to ask you guys.
In vy version, there is g sync, so no optimus available for vy. Should we expect significant battery performance difference between these two configurations since absence of optimus in vy version, or not?
I also checked the web for get info about impact of optimus in battery life in any other laptop models, but I couldn't find any useful info.
By the time, I already know that Nvidia claims no battery time drop for G-Sync, bu I think that may be mis-leading. Yes, G-Sync may not use any extra power, but absence of Optimus may affect battery performance.
(Maybe, we need to wait for the vy review from notebookcheck.net for answer of my question.)
(As you can understand, I don't need G-Sync
Thanks.Last edited: Jun 27, 2016 -
So I've had my GL502VY-DS71 for few days. Surprisingly the most stand out feature for me is not the power of the laptop itself. Coming from a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" retina, I have to say, the screen on this model is just beautiful. If you told me that this screen is OLED, I would believe you in a heart bit. I can't believe that it is only a 1080p display.
This morning I was at the airport for about 5 hours. I set the screen on the lowest brightness (which was surprisingly bright enough!) and did some light work on Word and surfed the web a bit. When I was about to board, the laptop had about 10% charge left. That is absolutely insane!
I love this thing.Time Lord, WandererLife and hmscott like this. -
Hi guys, i need a little help to decide.
I'm always around the world for business, I need a gaming and thiny notebook. I was thinking about the new Blade but after I change my mind on this model. _But, wait the new Pascal mobile series is a good choice? like the GS63, the new family will be more expensive? Because this GL502 is a very good, i'm in the USA only for July and in Italy we have less market for the gaming notebook, even the prices are higher, so, i don't want to blame my choice in the future.
Another PRO for the ASUS: WW warranty for 1 year. Always about the Asus, which one is the best choice? there are a lot of different with the 980M 4 or 8 GB? I saw an offer on Amazon with the same official price but inluded Overwatch and Earphone, There are better offer online? Sorry, but idk good American online reseller.
Thanks in advice, and sorry if I did some english error.hmscott likes this. -
