So out of nowhere, HP has the Omen gaming laptop. GTX860m w/4GB VRAM, 16GB RAM, i7, etc., etc. Starting at $1500 and with only a 4cell battery. Looks sleek, but not worth the money unless there's some drastic price reduction during the holidays.
still hoping ASUS delivers. i'm basically at the point now where i might just convert my HTPC into a desktop and call it a day.

No the HP really does not have a specific thing really making it stand out, seems like a mediocre product really.
-
Interesting cooling solution though, the whole bottom seems to be a grid haha. I'm getting quite impatient, I remember when it used to say "available october/november" which changed to "late 2014" and now says no preliminary date at all. Another thing that has disappeared from their website is the claim that it would cover 100% of color coverage. So what are we gonna get? and if it would ship with a 860 now that would totally be a deal breaker for me
-
not being able to sleep and browsing everything I found this XMG P505 15.6" Pro Gaming Notebook
Promises a 4k screen with 100% sRGB, Lots of customization, a nvidia gtx 970 or even 980, ssds, ram everything.
Says shipping has just begun so I'll wait for some reviews. If they are positive and there is still no word from asus, then i know what i want from santa -
In HP's defense, I do not see any other 15.6 notebooks with a high quality glossy IPS touchscreen with edge to edge glass. I like to think of the OMEN as a suped up Multimedia machine like an upgrades XPS 15 with an 860m instead of a 750m. It seems to be a higher quality reproduction of the Y50 and Nitro V 15, but of course we would need to see reviews first.
-
So if you can wait you will be well rewarded! (GX500 uses the same screen as the NX500, 100% NTSC)
Also it will ship in 2015, it won't ship with the GTX860m. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That will mostly be for photo editing and the like though as most content does not use the full range.
-
Every desktop monitor which can display close to 100% NTSC comes with a toggle switch. In NTSC mode it can use the full color gamut. In sRGB mode it limits itself to sRGB gamut so stuff calibrated for sRGB displays correctly without needing a separate color profile. (Pictures correctly tagged with a color profile and displayed using a color space-aware app, like Photoshop or Firefox with an add-on, will display correctly regardless of what mode the monitor is in. It's just the apps and photos which ignore color space which need the toggle.)Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If they are calibrated for 72% they don't properly use the full range if you want to be correct then, but having that higher gamut again is mostly for content creators that print and not gamers.

The nx500 right now costs 2500 dollars, and the specs can't even compare, I can only imagine how much the gx500 will cost ( ASUS NX500 - i7, 8GB, 256GB SSD, GTX 850M, IGZO UHD med touch - Inet.se) . Meanwhile the clevo is 6mm thicker yes, but you can get an actual gaming machine for 2700. I guess I was hoping for too much and being unrealistic, but it will still be fun to see how it turns out when it's released.
-
A few quick questions about the GX500 from ASUS:
- Are we still expecting it to ship with the 860M, or are we expecting them to update to the 900M series graphics cards? (ie. 960M)
- Are we still expecting a QHD display? (This seems like a really bad idea for laptop GPU, 900M series or not.)
- What price(s) are we expecting?
Thank you all in advance for your answers. -
It will most likely have GTX 960m/970m/980m + Broadwell i7.
It will pack a 4K display, which you can scale perfectly to 1080p when playing games.
It's price will be around $2500-3000. (judging by the NX500s price) -
Unless it's a 980M + i7 + 2(+) PCIE SSD's + 4K display, it wont be worth $3000+, that's just crazy. (Even the Aorus X7 Pro with 970M SLI is thinner and cheaper than that! @ 2599.00)
Here's hoping that estimate is wrong, way wrong.
Assuming 960M/970M + i7 + 1TB HDD + 1080p, it should be around $1699 or so considering the G751JT with the those same specs costs $200 less than that.
More than that is just unfair. -
More than 2500$ would be extremely overpiced. The 4K screen is just marketing, because most of us only use 1080p for normal work and gaming, but it overincrease the price too much.
I am very concerned about the heat managing and battery duration during standard use (not gaming).
PD: Sorry for my English -
Heck, I think more than $1,699 is overpriced for a base model GX500 with a 1080p screen.
If the G751JT-CH71 can have a larger 17" screen, 970M, i7 4710, and a 1TB Drive for $1499, the GX500 can at least do the same with a smaller screen.
Charging $1000 more for a 4K screen is ridiculous, even with the more portable form factor.
If they can limit the end cost to a maximum of $1,700 with 2x 2.5" drive bays, I'll be happy and I'll give it a shot. -
Hell even the Dell XPS 15 costs $2400 with ssd and i7! -
They'd have it flying off shelves if they charged less, and I'd say that for a base model (i7, 960/970M, 1TB HDD, FHD Display) GX500, $1,700 - $1,800 max is just right. The G751 base model costs $200 less for the same stuff and a larger screen.
I understand that there is a premium for aluminium, "looks", and size, but charging $1,000 more for it? Absolutely ridiculous. -
But the main point is, judging by the NX500, as everyone said, it will most likely cost $2500+ for the GX500 with 4k. I don't think they will have an normal 1TB HDD and FHD Display option as there isn't any news on that.
-
They've all changed since it was announced. (Confirmed)
They could start the base model (HDD+FHD) that way, which would be the best idea. The premium model could be for those who don't want to fiddle with internals and swapping screens. Think GX500JT and GX500JY. -
In that sense, Clevo/Sager have done it right... You can easily get a P650SG with a 4K screen etc for 1800 I believe...It's available now and honestly with how good the cooling system is on this notebook, it might be worth dumping Asus and getting it now...
-
I don't even need the 4K.
I just want a multimedia/semi-gaming laptop with the following:
- 1080p IPS Screen (Preferably Matte but doesn't matter)
- 960M+ GPU (Equivalent or higher)
- i7 4710 CPU
- 1TB HDD (No SSD Required)
- Good Build Quality (Preferably Aluminium)
- Good (Working) Speakers
... In as slim a laptop as I can get, for $1900 maximum in Canada
In terms of gaming, the most demanding games I play/am planning to play are Metro Redux (2033/Last Light), "Witcher" Series, Mirror's Edge 2. -
i've looked at all sorts of notebook models and nothing comes close to the purported specs of the GX500 for the size package and style ASUS has promised. there's always one key ingredient missing from the other manufacturers.
additionally you can't compare a 17" laptop to a 15". there's just more room for cooling power, extra drives, etc.
i'm still hopeful for the GX but its going to come at a premium. -

For those games I'd stick to the 970m/980m which are available now.

Asus better fix their mistake in GX500 back in CES2014...CES2015 is right around the corner and they better improve the laptop then release it. I do not know what the heck is going on with their company. Why can't they hold up to their promise, this is outrageous.
From now on...I expect a 960M or 965M GTX as the graphics card instead of 860M and make sure that there's plenty of holes at the bottom of the laptop for intake, I do not want another laptop to copy's apple magical air intakes. Why not just make it dual-intake? Like other customers said, why not just release a Full-HD panel version of this laptop as "basic" version while maxing out to 4k-panel version.
I hope something good happens at CES2015 because I'm still on my Dell Inspiron 1520 from 2007 and it's already painful waiting. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 860m to 970m is quite a leap in design requirements, I would expect many machines of this fork factor to embrace the 960/965 chips though.
-
Well, I can get a Clevo with a 4K Sharp IGZO screen, i4720 cpu, 970 gpu, 256 plextor ssd drive + 1TB regular drive, 16GB of RAM for $2000, and I can have it in a week.
The only thing that worries me about 4K screens is how well or how badly most of my programs will scale ( photoshop. maya and that stuff ). Notebook check just called it the best gaming laptop you can buy and I could see nothing wrong with it in person ( checked it out in a store ) . I just couldn't test something like photoshop in 4K and scaled down to 1080, that is the only question mark. Nothing beats this machine right now.
Yes, ASUS is definitely just as insane as Apple if charging over $2500 for their configuration. Clevo is also all metal, thin and looks great. -
Photoshop scales well since CC 2014. There is an experimental feature allowing you to scale the UI 200%.
-
-
Other than that, you'll be relying on third parties that, apart from visual apps, don't care much for scaling.
It's still a long way until 4K can be enjoyed in every aspect... So... IMO, just buy it if everything you wanna do scales OK with 4k. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Or r u it at 1080 for now and go 4k with 10 which i doubt will be perfect but should be a bit better at least.
-
I couldn't try it out with these programs at that resolution though. Don't know whether it would still look as sharp as a good regular 1080 panel. I'm assuming it should because 1080 is exactly 1/2 of this panel's resolution, but wouldn't hurt to try.
Not sure if I can go back to a normal 1080 panel. I'm using one of those 95% gamut screens right now and 1080 panels don't look up to it color wise. I saw both versions in the store. Sharp 4K panel does look better, so ideally I could just go with that and use it at 1080 res.
If I get a chance I should go back, look at the 4K panel again and make them show me a few programs running in 1080 resLast edited: Dec 30, 2014 -

Yes it would be so you could get the improved panel performance. The desktop scaling to 1080p should be near perfect as a 1:4.

No mention of the GX500 at the initial press conference of CES 2015 by ASUS. Very disappointing, but not surprised. I was however at least expecting a teaser road map or timeline with provisional specs since they announced a redesign for the ROG community. I hope they surprise tomorrow and prove me wrong, but somehow I doubt it. I guess I will have to keep checking this forum from my Qosmio.

CES 2015: Asus' new 4K gaming laptop is surprisingly thin | CyberShack -
I don't know, but 4K, touchscreen, and no optical drive (thank goodness!) is going to be awesome! The battery needs to be large because...I want at least 5 hours web browsing, but the hard drive will take up the space. Hopefully not too much.
I can't wait anymore...sadly. I'm ordering the Alienware 13 because if it's portability, touchscreen, battery life, and I can get them decently cheaper than usual. Also 2540x1440 truelife screen!
I hope they aren't going to ditch this like the GX500, it was failure and overpriced. -

Considering the chips now available to put in it the chassis may be an easier sell now.
-
Rumors said that it will probably be for selling in 2Q of the year. So, speaking about Asus, it will be June xD
-
Yeah and 2 months later, NVIDIA will have the GTX1000M series GPU's out.. Asus is just too slow with it's 15" laptops..

I don't think it's the same model... The GX500 was supposed to be 19mm thick while this one is "just over 2cm", ain't the same chassis
edit: notice that now the keyboard also includes a numpad as opposed to the GX500 -
Thanks for the find, it's great to finally hear some news regarding this product. It looks more appealing than the former with the numpad, but I still have my reservations about this product and the Q2 timeline for Australia, does Australia normally receive ASUS products prior to North America & Europe?! I still firmly believe cooling will be a major issue when running games such as Far Cry 4 or Arma 3 on Ultra settings regardless of the 4K screen.
Does anybody else find it slightly agitating that they are willing to insert an SSD of up to 512GB instead of a 1TB SSD when they can fit a 2.5" 1TB HDD inside. Don't get me wrong, I understand the economics of why they would put a HDD in, but to not have the option is a little silly given the sheer speed difference. It does seem like I would purchase the HDD version just to save money and insert the Samsung Pro Evo inside.
I'm a bit disappointed that they did not create a 17.3" version of this laptop. There would be greater space for cooling, albeit not a major difference given the slimness / thickness of the machine, but just look at the size of that bezel, they could have easily expanded the chassis to accommodate a 17.3". I just don't want to go back to a 15". The GX501 does look great though, apart from the wide bezel IMO. -
Why no other websites has info about G501? Or is it only for the Australian market?
