Some programs (mostly games) still will not use all the memory with the /PAE switch, it will still only address the 3.4 or whatever GB... and in some it will crash when it does try to use the higher memory. So in which to improve compatability Microsoft does not enable it by default.

    I've not managed to enable it yet because i get the message;

"The boot configuration sata store could not be opened.
    Access is denied."

Il need to find out how to get access first. I did however manage to enable it in Safe Mode, but it didn't detect 4gb ram in normal mode. I have not experiensed any malfunction yet.

quick question, both of the ram slots are located in a compartment at the bottom of the laptop right? (ex. some laptops have 1 stick under the keyboard...)

    Updated with Adlof's info.
And yes, both ram slots is easy accessable under the bottom panel. It takes 5 minutes to change ram depending if you have a screw driver available or have to spend 4 minutes to search for one first!

Also YAY this thread is not stickieed! :)

that is an impressive score! 45xx is the highest ive seen before, but on a 32.bit. How much of your score is because of 64-bit (or rather how little?). Also got a question, for how long do you run the GT card at 600/848 before it gets to hot? I am currently running my card at 500/700 (25 above factory). Can you recomend a good setting for the most power increase without increasing heat and stress on components to much?

    /bcdedit /pae /set forceenable

but i get "access denied" - how do i get access? - i am the owner and only user of my G1S.

Please suggest what to do :S

gets to hot ? it'll allways around 84-89 when i use "that clocks" depending on ambient temp :S

For normal all day use, i use 600 ( + 125mhz) and 825 ( + 125mhz). I prefer windows xp for now because the 2d/3d management is really fast. So it only runs at 600/825 when i start a game. On vista it's very slow to change to 2d clocks and i use the basic theme.

I installed Vista 64 only for fun, on 32bit it has a litle better score

So, we can do nothing but returned the laptop or wait for asus to fix the problem (may be with new bios if the problem is at bios).

Link works, but - seems you saved the file as a "204" file. Can't read it. What is the original file type? pdf, word?

And you can definately get your money back, they can't sell you a laptop like that without informing you about this "feature". I haven't decided what to do yet, i really like the laptop..

Hi there - the file appears to be a G1s bios 204. Is this correct? I only ask because the Asus website lists the latest version as 203. If this is newer, any news on what it fixes?

    Thanks

alright i think ive settled into buying the g1s...finally! b4 i purchase it i still have some questions....

    1. How well does the g1s overclock? Do you need a cooling pad with it when u oc it? btw, what programs do you guys use for oc'ing?

    2. What antivirus/anti-adware spyware (protection) software do you guys recommend?

    3. Any other tweeks/add-ons/software/acccessories that can let me get the most outa this beast?

    cheers

This thread should answer all your questions or at least point you in the right direction.

    1. I'm not too savvy with OC'ing...sorry can't help there

    2. I personally use NOD32. It's one of the best out there and doesn't use up a lot of system resources

    3. The first post has all the tweaks you need to do (i.e. removing bloatware). You don't need to update the BIOS yet. You can download some of the latest drivers for video etc. However if the system is working for you...I wouldn't mess with new drivers. Only download drivers to fix something that isn't working.

Mine came yesterday and I'm having fun playing around with it.

No, BIOS 204 does not fix the CPU issue. According to Asus, all it does is, "Fixed the HDD password will set failed when the HDD size is over 200G." Whoopee...

However, as I said in another thread, Ken (from GenTech) told me that Asus is currently working on getting a BIOS fix for the CPU problem, hopefully within another week or so.

I'm slightly confused on one thing. Is the CPU speed cut when it's fully charged and plugged in? Or is it only when it's below 90%?

Since there was a discussion on av software earlier on in this thread:

Kaspersky Internet Security (which I use and highly recommend) can be had for -$5 ($60 less $65 rebate) from%.cAmazon.com

    Kaspersky Internet Security

    Rebate form

It can then be upgraded to version 7.0 from the kaspersky site.

Do you think it's worth adding the latest driver versions and locations for key parts of the G1S on this page? for example, latest audio drivers and latest video drivers? It would certainly be a help for me when making sure my system is up-to-date, and having it in a thread labelled as a G1S resource thread seems to make sense to me...?

    Thanks,

    Petrov.

PS: So where/what are the latest audio/video drivers for the G1S? :)

Does anyone use PC Cillin by trend micro? The guys that installed my wireless yesterday recommended that AV along with SpySweeper. They were gamers, also and said PC Cillin uses minimal resources. Any thoughts?

I've never heard of it. I use NOD32 like FitnessJunkie and agree with his/hers conclusion.

Petrov - go to www.asus.com and find the download page OR go to the 1st page of this thread and read about drivers for Windows Vista with a full explenation.

Thanks Irathi! I was also curious about non-official drivers. E.g. the latest (best?) driver on laptopvideo (or whatever the site is called), and I seem to recall some discussion about a better non-Asus (generic) audio driver that fixed some sound/skipping issues? These were the types of things I was thinking might be useful, if they're relevant, on the OP. What do you think?

    Thanks,

    Petrov.

    HI All,

I'm a new G1S-A1 user and I've been reading this forum ever since receiving this awesome notebook. My only dislike about this notebook is Vista. I've tried to reformat the HDD with XP, but when I get to the blue screen to start installing XP, it says that I have no HDD installed and that it is going to restart.

This doesn't make sense because there seems to be nothing wrong with my hdd. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help!

I actually thought those were for the e-sata drivers. What method do you recommend? Both of these seem complicated. I don't quite understand what file i need from intel and the whole thing about the 3 1/2 floppy drive.

First of all maybe you should find out why you don't like Vista. Is it because it seems everyone is against it? Is it because you think it uses too many resources (turn off aero) because the security is too intrusive (turn off UAC)?
Not trying to be rude here, so if I come across as that forgive me.

Here are some hopefully less confusing steps to the floppy method...

--First you will need to download this:
    --- http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...lName=Windows*%20XP Professional&lang=eng package.

--Download it to somewhere like c:\ then open a command prompt, navigate to c:\ and type "iata76_enu.exe /a /pc:\inteldrivers" (without the quotes) which will extract itself to c:\inteldrivers

--Copy everything inside of the Drivers folder (so everything in c:\inteldrivers\drivers) to a blank floppy.

--Then when windows is booting off of your install cd it will say something like "press f6 to load third party drivers" ... i forget exactly what it says, hit f6 or f8 whatever one it tells you to.

--It will load up a few more things, then check your floppy drive.

--Select to load the ICH8M one, then whatever key it is to continue.

--Then it will load a bunch more stuff, and it should show your drive then.

I personally have not tested it with my G1S, but i had to do this when I wanted to load XP onto my old desktop (ASUS P5N-E SLI mobo, but different drivers).

Actually, I need XP because my college won't allow Vista. They're not ready for the change yet, and all the software they are allowing students to download is only for XP, Linux, MAC.

You've been helpful and I will try your method later on. I'll post again to let you know if I succeeded.

    Miyabina,

I successfully installed XP. Thank you for your help. I just have one question though. When I go to device manager, I see that there is a category of "other devices" and under this are the USB and base system device.

Did I install some drivers incorrectly? Other than that, everything is fine.
