UAC is User Account Control, you can turn it off my going to Control Panel. I have no idea specifically where though.

I just tried to use the Live CD for Ubuntu Fiesty on this computer... and it would get to the 2nd loading screen and then reboot the computer. Does this happen to everyone else too?
(osx86 does the same thing, but the -x cpus=1 thing makes it sorta boot)

Just an update for me on my Ubuntu "ordeal."
It was alot simpler to just to the alternate install for me.
I just ran that, and it installed without a problem.
(Well it got stuck in the 80% in the installer while trying to look for updates. Even though I was cabled into the net, it never could connect. It eventually timed out, and installed the rest of the OS after about 30 or so mins of waiting.)
Booted it normally, the X server failed to start.
Did a "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and changed "nv" to "vesa".
    Did a "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start"
    then "exit"
Then it booted into Ubuntu via the vesa graphics.
    (updated Ubuntu)
Then downloaded and ran envy to install the nvidia graphics.
    Did a "sudo nvidia-xconfig --mode=1680x1050"
then a "sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and set the default bitdepth to 24.
I think I might have edited in my xorf.conf to set composite to "enabled" ...to enable Ubuntu's desktop effects.
    Then I was in buisness.
This is all pretty basic stuff, but just wanted to give a little update on what I personally did to make it work. Since the LiveCD method never cooperated with me. If it helps someone else, then cool. If not, then its just another mindless post here on the NBR.com forums!

The newest version of ndiswrapper works pretty nice for me. The one linked to in the tutorial on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Intel_4965_AGN_WiFi_Driver/Fiesty would not find my wireless network on boot. I would have to change the access point it was trying to connect to, to some arbitrary one, then back to mine... then it would work.

a 2nd disk drive will fit right?

if so what are the size limitations and how much would it affect battery life?

uh... no? Where are you going to put a second harddrive? You could replace the existing one, but there's no room in there for 2 at the same time...

    Hi guys,

A recent quirk with my G1S has occured - I can't change the speaker volume using the Fn keys. Normally the little picture of the speaker comes up and I can change volume, but now no picture comes up and the volume won't change. Does anyone know how I might have disabled this??

    Thanks,

    Petrov.

Great post Irathi, i've been jumping between posts and boards as well looking for information on the g1s. It's nice to see it all in one place.

I have a question for everyone however. At the link below, adolfotregosa has an idle core temp of 59 degrees or so. Mine however hovers around 70 (I'm using RivaTuner to measure this).

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=126365&page=68

If I OC to Bisonman80's recommended 575/780 i get artifacts showing up within about 5 or 10 minutes of starting a game and the temp reaches about 95 degrees. I've checked my idle 2D frequencies and they match what adolfotregosa had in his pics. I'm thinking now that I may have a defective card.

Currently I am running Vista 32 with 3 GB of ram, using rivatuner 2.04 and I have the 165.01 Nvidia drivers installed.

If anyone had any suggestions on what I might check I'd really appreciate it.

No two cards are exactly alike. Some will reach 575/780 or beyond with no trouble, some might not even make it past the stock 475/700. Unless you're getting artifacts at stock speeds, you do not have a defective card.

Anybody else noticed that the intakes for the CPU lid is covered with some sort of tape ?
I decided to remove that tape and ended up with a huge drop in both CPU and GPU temperatures....

    Before ;

    After ;

Your mileage may vary - but a qualified guess is that you too will have a big temperaturedrop...

Step 2 is of course to replace the heatpad with some good thermalpaste - Arctic Silver Céramique is long lasting and very good in laptops.

In my case the temperature in idle is about 74°, when i run a game or 3dMark i reach 98-100 degries. HOw can I o/c to 575/780 as he did ^^ ?

    lol my 8600 will burn

Do you know if Bisonman80 uses a cooler ?

There is similar tape covering most of the ventilation holes on the plastic cover over the memory slots. I removed that as well.

Ok - there were no tape other places in my G1S - or two other G1S I have had my hands on :)

For those interested ; Xp_Pro w. SP2 (32bit - english) .iso to be found @ http://www.ocshoot.no/binaries/XP_PRO_ISO/ with most of the drivers needed to get XP_pro installed.
You WILL off course need XP_Pro product key in order to install this release.

I have forgotten exactly which drivers I included since it was compiled back in May, but I have installed XP on 3 G1S with no problems whatsoever, also grab the Ultimate G1S XP (32bit) driver pack @ http://nsa.f28.us/G1S/Asus_G1S_XP_Driver_Pack.zip

EDIT: a lot of tweak and updates for XP to be found @ http://www.ocshoot.no/binaries/XP_Tweaks/

Irathi ; ja er norsk... du finner oss på ocshoot.no@efnet ;)

updated post with NilsG's compilation on Xp_Pro cd etc. Also recommended it as 1st choice if you are going to install xp on g1s. The older method is still posted.

I have a question. In the resource thread i saw some awasome overclocking performance, done I suppose with NTune or RivaTuner. What kind of driver were used to O/c? Or Imust to flash the gpu bios before to try o/c?

thx i'll try that when i get home :D

the one that's on the first post of this thread was done with NTune i believe, and usually from what i've seen you can only o/c with stock drivers, or else they'll revert back to normal

not if its the only driver released... Its Asus own official driver, it works. There is no point in making a new driver if there is nothing wrong with it!

You could try to call ASUS support or your re-seller. Its probably an easy answer or maybe they need a new driver for your card ..

Mine has no problems with SD1 or SD2 cards up to 4 GB.

Might be that your SD card is ****ed, or driver is corrupt - or worst case scenario - your cardreader is ****ed.
My (humble) suggestion is that you first uninstall the cardreader - reboot and then try to reinstall it.
Might be an idea to try all of the drivers one at the time too :)

    Good luck !

hey guys, thinking about trying to overclock the G1S. I've never done any of this stuff so I'm pretty scared I could burn out my G1S. Would overclocking the G1S to 575/780 be safe if I don't do anything to improve cooling? The G1S is on a wooden table and has room for the vents, but no better cooling paste, etc. Also, if possible could someone tell me how to do this as I have no idea of what to do
    thanks guys

read the OC part on the first page, it will give you what you need. Just monitor how warm it gets and shut it down if it gets to warm (that be when it melts)

Anything over 100 Celsius is bad bad news. Typically, when I'm gaming in Counterstrike Source it hovers between 85-90...and this in on max settings at native resolution (the 16xx X 12xx one).

well i did undervolt my computer so I might have to put it back to original to supply it with enough power. Right now I'm using 1.087V on it, gonna see if that;s enough to power it. Though I will downclock it back when I;m not using it just so the wear on the parts is less.
