Heh, that's part of the reason why the price is so much lower....

I bought my G1S last week and upgraded memory to 4Gb (2x2GB G-skill sticks from newegg @ $134). I wanted to dual boot with vista and Ubuntu since I spend most of my time on Ubuntu.
Now waiting for Asus to update BIOS to fix 4GB problem, that really sucks!
Does anyone know how to contact Asus or organize a mass complain campaign?
By the way with 2GB memory, I installed Ubuntu 7.10 (32bit) and everything went smoothly. Much faster than my Athlon XP 3000+ desktop
-
Er... how is a 32bit OS not detecting all of the 4 gigs of RAM, Asus' problem? Call microsoft up.
-
Mate, you got it wrong, that is Microsofts problem and not ASUS. Asus cant fix the fact you are running VISTA x32 and not x64. The x32 will recognize all 4GB ONLY if you get PAE mode to work!
The default for any x32 system is max 3 GB memory. Thats one of the main reasons they are selling x64 systems.
Asus might be able to fix your Bios to recognize all 4 GB ram, but it will still not make WINDOWS VISTA/XP recognize it! -
I think I was not clear. I know 32bit OS can not recognize 4GB. I tried to install Ubuntu AMD64 and Vista64 with 4GB but got stuck at the boot screen with an error saying "failed to allocate memory".
I am now running 32bit Vista and Ubuntu 7.10 with 3070MB...I would like to install 64bit Ubuntu since I do a lot of number crunching+simulation. -
I just upgraded to 4GB of RAM from 2GB. Now any time I try to boot up Ubuntu (32bit AND 64bit) it just complains that it cannot dectect my graphics adaptor. The 32bit was installed on my system and the 64bit was from a live CD. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the nvidia drivers via envy... no avail. Tried a "sudo nvidia-xconfig" to no avail. I can't even use the "nv" driver... since X wont use anything than failsafe VESA mode. (at least thats what I think is going on... due to everything I've tried so far). Whereas when I only had 2GB... Ubuntu would work/run just fine. Not sure why an upgrade in RAM would mess things over so much. Any thoughts/suggestion would be awesome.
PAE mode in vista x86 as set by bcdedit still wont see more than 3GB of RAM. Haven't tried with 64bit yet... will soon though
On a lighter note: Looks like there is some (3rd party) support for the OLED in Linux now
http://lapsus.berlios.de/asus_oled.html -
junky propably its happening becouse of intels turbo technology that is impelmeted in 965 chipset and whole deal about sharing local memmory with vga... 4gb is a bit f***ed up in 32bit os u will propably get resource conflicts and under 64bit u have to have some acpi tool that will allow you to cut out/disable deivices that wont be used under os becuse there is simply no drivers/support for them for those oses... only thing i can sugest as a newb on laptop ground to install with 2gb configure and disable unused devices then upgrade to 4gb...
as for hdd detection problems
go into bios and find option that manages hdd controller and change it to compatible and xp instalation should work, slipstream is almost imposible to do on recovery cd from asus becouse file with image from power quest imagining is password protected which i wasnt able to pull out from asus technican ;]
here is fresh package of xp drivers and software, it also include short readme how to instal xp on compatible hdd mode and then swich back to enhanced ;]
and common problems and solutions with 4gb systems and vga problems

BIOS 205 and early has address conflict with Intel PCIE Port. It mapped to the Video adapter memory range. Only Vista64, can remap resources, but i saw on Internet, that somebody tweak Linux kernel, so Xorg will remap Video Adapter, but this is not official kernel patch. I am waiting for Asus to fix it too. Mandriva 2008 64 will not boot to Xorg if you put 4GB RAM, only 2 working right now.

im not linux based os user but if u know how to disable those ports from kernel it may work

Yeah. Looks like folks in XP are having the same problem... Disabling port 3 is for the turbo memory that the G1S-A1 doesn't have. Just don't know how to do that in linux

hey guys... i'm really happy with my asus g1s... the only thing i don;t like so much is the battery... with usual use, like wifi, music, web browsing, icq, etc. i get about an hour and a half and when i lower brightness, close all unnecessarry apps and almost do not use it, i get maximally 2 hours and 15 minutes...
how are you guys wth the battery ? how much do you get of it ??? the problem is that i would also like to you it for school, but it won't last the whole day even with 2 batteries...
the battery really is the only thing i do not like on this asus...
does someone have a solution how to get more lifetime?
what can i do ?
how much is your maximum ?
how shall i underclock the GPU and CPU to get as much lifetime as possible?
is there a way how to set the green flashing lights on the side so that they wouldn't flash but would be constantly on ? or is there a way how to change the speed of the flashing ? i would moust likely have them just on without flashing... -
There's a Asus program called Direct Console which controls the small LED on the upper left side of the keyboard as well as the green lights. You can turn them off from there. Also, the max battery life I get even with using Vista Battery Saver (with all stuff closed) is like maybe 2:30 hours maximum. I don't think there's a way around that.
-
i know that but i wan't to keep the flashing lights ON without flashing... a constant light... i don't want them off... a mean a hardware edit or a 3rd party program which could change it....
i know vista battery saver, but i'm more likely asking for underclocking and undervolting of the GPU and CPU to increase the battery life...
if someone could explain me how to use rivatuner and Notebook Hardware Control... -
Undervolting the CPU will definitely help with battery life. There are several guides floating around the forums. One popular program thats used to undervolt CPUs is RMClock. You may want to give that a shot.
-
i wanted to edit the voltage in NHC, because it iseems really nice to me... i kinda didn;t figure out how to do it in RMClock... but NHC shows me this:
i dont know why, but it doesn;t show me the values in NHC... does anyone have an idea why ?
or can someone explain me how to lower voltage effectively in RMClock?
does anyone have an idea how to change the frequence of the flashing lights on sides, or have to make them flash constant ? -
NHC for Vista at this point is fubared! It doesn't work right and you'll notice that your always running at MAX speed. NHC has really gone down in quality and it's insanely buggy for Vista, I would say it's basically in alpha stage and the author hasn't updated it since May of 2007.
Definately use RMclock instead, dig around it's in the profiles section, but it's a lot less user friendly as you need to preset all profiles. -
hmm.. to be honest, I don't quite know them off heart at least the proven safe numbers(but it's still may be unstable).
I don't own the same processor or laptop as yourself so my recommendations on the voltage setting wouldn't be too accurate. What I suggest is to test each voltage(and run something like Stress PRime 2004 Orthos Edition http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm) and run each voltage setting for at least 20 mins each, once it detects an error for that multiplier, it's too low and you need to adjust it back higher. Since each processor is different, you would have to test each voltage so that you know it's completely stable. This is a very time consuming task but rewarding if done correctly. If you simply set voltages lower, you are basically shooting in the dark here and you may run into BSODs or APP problems because of this(and the worst part is you think it's something else when that happens). -
About the batterylife, 2 hours 30 minutes is about max you will get, but then again this laptop is built for games and "speed", not work and battery life. So you got the wrong product if you were planning on traveling a lot with it and work a lot without AC connection
-
well i think that there is no reason to do anything with gpu becouse it have by it self 3 stages of performance, if u set batery saving in nvidia cp it shoudl work fine
about cpu, use rmclock and modyfy an duse one profile, i used max performance ;]
i set in ac mode all to highest values multiplier x10 voltage 1.250 throtle 100% lcd brightnes 4 is enough for me
i set in battery mode all to lowest values multiplier x6 voltage 0.935 throtle 12.5% lcd brightnes to 1 ;] its hell slow but still u can surf via web, in idle it hold with wireless off about 3h20' if u use wireless try reducing wifi power...
forget about plaing in this battery mode fps drops in guildwars in 1680x1050 full detail and aax4 to 3fps ;] -
I have found the G1S with the proper configuration 7500 CPU with the mouse BAG and asus warranty for the same price I paid at Best Buy $1549.00
I don't get it.
My problem is they are not fully disclosing the deal and were not upfront about it.
They did not inform me about the CPU speed, warranty, They did mention the no backpack mouse though.

Hey men, i have a question for u:
Have you ever tried to install Ubuntu or Xp on an eSata (external Sata) hd disk?
Is it possible? Is it simply?
Thnx for answers. -
thanks man for your response... it is better to try your values right away, then to do testing for many many days, because it realy is not recommended to simply lower them, you are suposed to go one value lower, do a stress test for 40 minutes and then lower again, which would actually take a bunch of time...
what i actually want is to simply get more of it, i don;t need the gaming performance when i am on battery, i want performance which is enough for watching a video or surfing the web, if i could find values, which would make my laptop laggy for this activities and would increase battery life as well, i'll be very happy,,
so you guys think that it is ok to simply uncheck all the higher multipliers and to just lower the 6x multiplier to 0.935 ? that would meen that the laptop would just run on this multiplier and on the defined voltage... is it safe to do it like this ?
i know it wasn't the best buy when i wanna use this laptop also for school, but i kinda realized that the battery life isn't sufficient so i bought a secondary battery, if i kinda could set the voltage to such a level, which would allow me to use the laptop for 3 hours and 20 minutes, i would get almost 7 hours with two batteries
and that is pretty good i think... (i'm propably a bit of an utopist)
but i really love the design of this laptop...
the only thing i would enjoy is if i would find a way how to change the way the green lights on the sides flash... to make them light constant, without blinking...?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Alright, I found the kernel patch here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=96613&page=2
Now the new kernel is all installed... but I lost sound and wifi. I am using Ubuntu 7.10. If anyone wants to give pointers or tips... thanks
Flip:
You can always try those settings, if anything the computer would just bluescreen, and then you can try a bit more juice to the CPU. As for the blinkie lights, I do not think you can have them constantly on. Just off or flashy.
Edit--
Well I copied my /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic to /lib/firmware/2.6.22.9-custom and my WiFi started to work. Downloaded the newest alsa and did a make && make install for that and now sound works. So pretty much all up and running, even the oled display working.
Just don't have the xD card reader... SD is fine. -
Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the green LED on the circle G1S Logo under the tracking pad? It becomes quite distracting when watching movies/playing games in the dark as it reflects off the screen. Thanks.
-
Disable the trackpad...

Hey guys,
A lot of you say that you successfully installed xp on this computer, but I am still having troubles. Every time I try to use an xp disk to install, it says that I don't have a hard drive and forces me to quit. Right now I am using this link:
http://www.ocshoot.no/binaries/AsusG1S/
All I did was put the iso on a dvd and try to install it again, but it still said that I have no hard drive, just like a regular xp disk.
Can somebody please tell me specifically how to install xp? I've tried following other directions, and I'm sorry for my slight computer ignorance, but could someone please give me specific step by step directions? Thanks. -
Install the 205 bios and in the bios you can change the controller to "compatible" and install.
-
Hey i just saw on ASUS.com that there is a G1Sn and G2Sk - anyone know the specs on these two recent models? (it was not on the webpage)
There is also a driver release for the G1Sn, anyone know anything? -
Yeah same here. Couldn't find anything about it anywhere.
-
Hi guys. I've a problem with my G1S. When I switch it on or when I resume from hibernation, the sound is not working. I must disable it (mute) and reenable it to fix the problem.
How can I fix that ?
Vista SP1 didn't help...
Thx a lot -
No one's ever experienced it ?!
-
Well should we finalize this ?
My "G1S driver compiled xp (media center)" is something I have installed on 3 computers without any problems.
I had a problem with the media center bit the first time I installed this iso on my own G1S - well I did a reinstall and it turned out ok.
So please - if you experience a problem with your XP install - try again - and again ; before you start nagging at us that gave you the opportunity to experience the power the G1S really have
-
Hey nils, after all the trouble and sh1te, do you find it "worth" going back to XP?
I was fighting from the start to go to XP, but im not turning back now, Vista works fine.. and so far any problem encountered ive managed to work around with a few google searches.
How big is the performance increase? - not talking about the 3dmarkscore, we know that one, but when you play a game or do some job. Do you think you will notice the difference?
I don't think we do and XP is overrated. Its always the same complaining every time a new windows hit the stores. I even have a friend who still runs Windows 95 because he insist its the best.. (dont ask me why..)
I think in the end its mostly about what your habits are, 90% of the programs ive used works in "run comp mode XP/2000/95" and "run admin". The only one i have problems with is Diablo II LOD an old favorite of mine from 2000, it wont always "recognize" the CD even if i use a image. It boots nicely after a recent pc reboot, but if i wait 20 min after previous reboot it might not start. Then its just a reboot and it works fine again. DiabloIILOD is from 2000 and is out of age and i dont blame vista for not supporting it..
And the visuals in vista is a lot smoother then xp. I love it. I used to have XP with silver theme and black/picture in the background. This Vista default is even better, it looks smooth and it matches the G1S. Provided is a screen shot of my desktop. Yes you can get vista overlay for XP, but that will steal away the little performance you got by using XP.
Don't tell me this doesn't look good?
If you ever wondered what that one button on top of your provided Asus.LogitechMX518 mouse is, - press it in vista and it brings up this little feature that has been hijacked from another OS i wont mention the name of
This is how it will look when you removed any unneeded programs, NoD32, "Windows Sec.Alert", Logitech Mouse and Keyboard, Bluetooth manager, Direct Console, Synaptics Point Dev, Wireless Console ON, and volume + battery. Nothing that screams bloat ware. I would get rid of the shield with "windows sec.alert" but i cant be bothered to google it.. I set it not to pop up ever so it don't bother me.
I've cut down on the default programs vista has running and ive changed most of the programs ASUS installed. At the moment i run my PC at around 900 MB of Ram on idle (just playing music on winamp and browsing the net). Some people complain that is to much, but the G1S comes with 2GB and that last GB is enough to handle 90% of the games with ease! Spend another buck or two and you have 3/4 GB. Problem solved.
My G1S with Vista runs all my programs smooth and ive had 1 blue screen in 6 months! I got it last night when running Civ4 Warlords, its known for bugs and i was working my computer to death with a lot of programs and graphics.
My last computer had XP, i could get a blue screen every day or week! - so far Vista is the most stable OS ive ever used, it will also always let me do "ctrl+alt+del" for the taskbar and end any process that might go fubar.
I am satisfied with Vista even before the SP comes. I don't need XP and neither do the ones who read this thread. The G1S is powerful enough to run Vista with ease! You just need to remove the crap ASUS put on your G1S..
Thats my opinion
and i also want to thank for the help on this thread and all the work that has been put down in it from people like NilsG- give them a rep folks! they have deserved it
-
Hi, people!
I want to remove Vista and use XP in my G1S.
Computer is not my area and I am raw in this subject.
I read the Irathi's step-by-step and got confused when he said Install the chipset and ACPI drivers first. What is the chipset? Where can a get it? Do I have to install it right before the ACPI installation or right before XP's?
I will appreciate your help folks. -
Those are directions for the order of drivers to install, that is, after you get XP installed. You will need to nlite/slipstream you SATA drivers in (look around, I don't have the link handy currently) first, then install the drivers from the driver pack (See sig)
Good luck! -
Ok seriously, I have been trying to do that for sometime now and I just cannot get that to happen. How do you do that. By the button on top, do you mean the scroll wheel?
-
Here ya go:
Now there is 2 ways to do this, the quick one on the mouse or the one in the launch bar.
-
You can also doing it by pressing Windows+Tab (like alt tab, but one key over)
If you're a keyboard junkie like me, you end up hitting it a lot when going for alt. -
Ok, Thanks guys!!
-
I'd like to dual boot XP and Vista. I have Vista installed now. Is there a guide somewhere for how to dual boot XP/Vista with Vista already installed? Much appreciated, thanks.
-
Quick question: after slimming down startup apps on your G1s-A1, what percentage of the stock 2gb do most people find they are using?
~ Brett -
The lowest idle status of my vista has been just about 1 GB ram. I have 3 total so that makes 33.3%
-
Running Firefox and Foobar2000 as I always am, and I'm using 740mb of my 2gb, so ~36%.
Tight ship being run here, haha. -
Ok, cool, I thought using almost 1 gig immediately after startup was a little bit absurd... but I guess I can just chalk it up to Vista/Aero and the predictive cache stuff it does with the RAM.
Thanks!
~ Brett -
i have quick but stupid question do i download g1s.iso from http://www.ocshoot.no/binaries/AsusG1S/ if so how do i use it?
-
can anyone help me?
-
Once you download the .iso, you need to burn it on a CD. Rest should be straightforward as the .iso contains the SATA driver already. Then install Windows XP pro. Keep in mind you will need your own Windows XP CD key in order to install Windows.
Also, download the XP drivers pack from the same link so you can install drivers once XP finishes installation.
Check the readme.txt for some help...
http://www.ocshoot.no/binaries/AsusG1S/read_me.txt
Good luck!!
-
if thats it then all i hev to do is wait for my laptop to come and thanks for the help
-
Wow, thanks alot! This was the only package of drivers that got it to work for me, everyone else's had problems with something didn't work.
But I got this tiny problem now, sometimes when I do something the computer freezes for lika a second. It can happen when I open a folder, when I start a program or just about anytime.
Anyone knows what this could be?Last edited by a moderator: May 5, 2015 -
Okey, did a new format to see if that problem I had before would be gone, it is so far.
But now i have the same problem as I had in 2 of the 3 installations of XP yesterday. When I turn off BT+Wireless in Wireless console only BT turns off and the Wireless still yelling about there's networks here that I can connect to.
Do anyone know how to make this Wireless Console work as it should?
