Ya thinking bout it now I feel stupid  thanks for the heads up im prob going to go at it again but properly this time, thanks for the advice ^^

Edit: Should I also use pads for the memory? and anybody know where I can get some? I checked NCIX.com, newegg.ca and even tigerdirect.ca but I can't find any... unless im looking for the wrong thing, a brand to search would prob help.

I used 1mm pads and they seemed to fit snugly. I didn't like how gummy the original ones were, and I think the ones I bought have a higher heat conductivity rating.

Which pads did you use? Where can they be purchased?

I just checked my Load temps:
    750 / 1000, 10 minutes of SC2: 97C peak.

I need an advice on which thermal compound to use.
I had a choice of 1.5g ICD 7 and 4g AC MX-2 cuz they are equally priced.
Since I'm gonna get my done at an Asus ASP, should I get both CPU and GPU repasted?

It doesn't really matter what you choose from the good non conductive brands. They will only differ by 1 or 2 degrees.

The major problem is what Asus used and how they used it.

Hey, yesterday I repasted my GPU and here are results:
    Before:
    -idle 64/66/65
    -furmark 85/105/92

    After:
    -idle 54/55/54
    -furmark 80/88/85

    (Ambient 25*C)

Next days I will drill some (Idk how to call it :p) "line holes"(like original) to make better flow, or if I will have timeI will make a metal cover with thermal pad associated with GPU metal radiator :D I know, its crazy idea but who knows... maybe I will manage to do it.

But, IC7 is a nice compoud, I recomend it. Cheers

Chastity in your forum experience have you seen anything concrete about whether or not your warranty is voided from repasteing? I am trying to mount an offensive in order to get my laptop from the Clutch's of Asus...

Hmm I bought the .5mm from FrozenCPU since I thought the 1mm might be reason why the heatsink wasn't sitting properly.

    @Ziddy123

    It depends on the heatsink.

For me the .5mm worked perfectly.

I would like to thank Chastity for her informative thread regarding her own re-pasting experience. Your thread helped me a lot when I was attempting my re-pasting tonight and I got through the whole process without any incidents for both my GPU & CPU.

My TIM was degrading like crazy. I used to get 52~56c idle temps when my notebook was new. I'm coming to my second month of ownership and my idle temps were around 66~68c before my re-paste. I started getting GSODs during this time in several games like Strarcraft 2, Crysis & AVP.

I re-pasted my GPU & CPU with IC Diamond 7 a few hours ago and after firing up my notebook the only issue I had was inserting my KB Light cable the wrong way and nearly giving myself a heart attack fearing I killed the KB back lighting. After sorting that out, I tested my notebook on Starcraft 2 on ultra settings and I'm pleased to report a max temp around 72~74c. I used to hit around 90~100c before re-pasting and would have random GSODs. I'm GSOD free now in SC2 after re-paste and have been playing for over an hour.

Furmark on extreme setting is reporting a max temp of 81c after a 45 minutes run :) All testing was done on stock clocks. Ambient temperatures down here in SEA usually hovers around 30~40c depending on the weather ;)

I just finished repasting my G73 and now it looks like it's sitting pretty at 56-ish degrees, whereas before, they were up in the high sixties. Around 67 or so. And after a few hours maybe the temp has decreased a bit, after the paste has settled. Or am I just making that up? Anyway, my paste of choice is the Noctua NT-H1. Let's hope it keeps cool.

I was incredibly worried when I had to remove the two taped black cables on the motherboard. I couldn't understand how to remove them for the life of me, so I "carefully yanked" them a bit. To no avail. I was worried about fatal damage to the computer, but then I realised that I had to remove the clear tape from the silver sockets, and then gently ease them out. Whew, problem avoided! And it started up on the first try, lucky me :)

So long and thanks for all the fish... Ehm, I mean tips, and good luck to all others who repaste this beast!

My temps has been fluctuating like mad since I re-pasted. I had stellar temps during the first few runs after my re-paste but it has been steadily creeping back up. However it's still giving good results compared to the time before I re-pasted and after leaving Furmark running for 7 hours ++ by mistake, I'm only maxing out at 93c. The TIM probably needs some time to cure properly before I can gauge my actual result.

Yeah, me too. I initially believed that my idle temp was 56 degrees, but now it is 60. Still 7 degrees better than before though. My power setting is Power4Gear High Performance, and I assume that all who compare their temps is also using this setting. Are you?

    Hi everyone

I been reading the forum about G73 high temps. Mine was running just fine and about a month ago it start shut down after playing games for 5min, ex. RE5.

So after reading in this forum I RMA'ed and I just got it back from ASUS so I start it and ran FFXIV benchmark and for my surprise it shut down just at the start of the benchmark.

Just from the temp reading there is something wrong with the Thermal diode and the MemIO, should I RMA it again? try to repaste it myselft? what you guys think is wrong?

    Bios 204
    Ati driver 10.7a

From the worksheet they seem to have replace this parts:
    - G73JH VGA_BD./AS
    - G73 Thermal Fan

Here some temps reading using HWiNFO32:

    Before RMA Idle:
    -Thermal diode: 78c
    -DispIO: 68.5c
    -MemIO: 78c
    -Shader: 74c

    After RMA Idle:
    -Thermal diode: 50c
    -DispIO: 54c
    -MemIO: 50c
    -Shader: 56c

    After FFXIV benchmark Idle (reboot):
    -Thermal diode: 74c
    -DispIO: 56.5c
    -MemIO: 74c
    -Shader: 59.5c

Chastity: I finally completed my repaste tonight.

Results: 86C @ 100% load, down from 110+C (thermal shutdowns at 100% load).

I'm pretty pleased. Thanks for giving advice and inspiration :)

Furmark on the G73 after repasted with ICD7 ... I ran it a few times and it would bounce between 83-85 even after a half hour ... Temps took a long time to creep up to so i have very good contact ... First G73 i had at launch had terrible temps in comparison even after repasting 2 times... Its rather warm in my room as well so im sure it would be a couple degrees cooler with the AC going :)... Overall im impressed especially after having the Clevo 8760/M15x/M17x .. Good stuff

Furmark settings were 1280x1024 xtreme burn stability test post fx...

Did you go from a G73 to a clevo to alienware and now back with a G73? My temps are weird compared to yours, all 3 reads roughly the same, I get 56/55/56 at idle and then load goes to 85/88/85 but all 3 stays within 2-3C of each other using the same paste.

Yeah i tried all the machines lol... I was actually the first person on this board to get a G73 lol ... http://forum.notebookreview.com/5842845-post5407.html

As for my temps vs yours my temps out of the box were also uneven like that and max temp was 93 in furmark before but the others were low like they are now... So i dropped about 10degrees on the core and mem and the others stayed the same...

The board rev i have is C14 for what its worth ...

I guess I'm a member of the repaste club. Asus repasted and replaced the heatsink on my laptop because apparently it had a thermal shutdown overnight.
    Glad they caught it.

Oh nice! :D Guess that would be a big clue.

Speaking of which, I got a PM from Andrew @ Innovation Cooling. It seems I've been awarded the honorarium of an Diamond Engineer for my cooling achievements and enthusiasm in promoting others to improve their own cooling situations. I'm waiting for a link to my new banner! :D

I'd have to say, it's been a rather hot & productive run here at NBR, considering I joined back in Jan 2009, but only got serious here with the purchase of my G73 at the end of April. I'd like to thank everyone here for being supportive of my attempts and occasional sacrifices (my poor keyboard!) in helping to bring everyone's G73 up to the joy it now is, except for people who need eSATA....

Thanks man :).. I missed my G73 but the one i had at launch died a few days after getting it and left a sour taste in the my mouth so i went on to try a handful(i use that term loosely) of other machines but since all the progress has been made now i am right back where i started ...

I really wanted the JW i wont lie but i opted for the JH more as a financial decision then anything else plus at the end of the day its all the same stuff when you have a good working computer ...

I always enjoy reading your posts Ziddy including your rants about Nvidia ;)..

Thanks for the info, another happy repaster here.

I did use copper with thermal paste in place of the thermal pads though, seems to be running smoothly after 30 minutes of furmark.

ok so i just finished repasting. everything went smoothly i was extra careful during the removal of the keyboard and the speaker cable. once you do all your research and read tons about peoples experience on them u pretty much have the background on what to do to make this repaste go smoothly.

before repasting my GPU temps would idle around 67-70 degress and max out at around 95-97. i dont get any crashes even with this high temp. so opted to repaste knowing its just a matter of time before the paste starts degrading.

heres where i need most of u guys input. so after repasting, literally minutes after, i fired up furmark. ran it for 12 min. and i peaked at 92 degrees o_O . my initially thot was maybe i didnt put in enough paste thus the given temp.

ignoring that i ran SC2 for like 15 min. and i only peaked @ 86. played Bad company 2 for 1 hr. and i peaked only at 84 degrees.

i dont understand why furmark and gaming temps have way big difference on temps. can some1 explain why? also, do u guys think i should redo my paste and put in more?im using ICD7 btw.

OT: idle temps right now as im typing this is @ 59 degrees

You have the exact same temperatures as me mokylim, and I've also repasted. I begin to suspect that the temp is up to each different gpu, and that not every GPU can be as cool as Chastity's. I'm satisfied with these temps though, no need to be obsessive about it, as long as my computer is functioning properly I'm good! :)

ODD UPDATE: I had my first thermal shutdown  Apparently I must have jostled the laptop, and caused my gpu fan to get stuck. Hit the 114C mark while on DA. Oops. Waited until the laptop restarted, and checked my exhausts. No air on right side. Gave it a love tap, and she geared up, and watched my temps do the Kansas City Shuffle back down to 44C

Just a tip to everyone should this happen to you.

Wow, that must've been a pretty huge jostle. The way the fans are screwed down I can't see how that could happen. I can only see that happening if something got into the fan that caused the blades to stop spinning or the connection is coming loose?

Must have been one of Chastity's loose screws caught in the fan. That second nudge freed the little bugger. I'm sure she's squared it away now to prevent any future occurrences.

    Cheers,
