So I just finished formatting from a retail win7 64bit ISO (not the asus OEM copy w/ bloatware) and installed each set of drivers in groups followed by a restart + CClean.
I alrdy have two issues in the Event Log:
WHEA Logger Event ID 17 PCIe Root Port D138 <-- ?! this is why i was told to reformat!!!
I did not install any of the optional Drivers, including Power4Gear
I have the WHEA error before I formatted, why is it back again?!
I was using the 310.4 Verde Nvidia driver, now im back to the 290.10 Driver, still causing an issue... Atleast I think its GPU related
Please HELP!
-
I made a few updates to my post, i was able to clean up some of the issues, but not this PCI issue...
Also, does anyone know if turboboost will work without p4g? is there a way of knowing... (testing) -
Hello,
Did you install chipset driver for intel 5 series chipset?
If you did please go to device manager and look for Intel 5 series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 to whatever the number that is listed on there (It's under "System devices"), right click on them one by one and go to properties and report the Driver provider/Driver date/Driver version that's listed on each of them here.
If the provider is listed as Microsoft, and the date is somewhere around 2006 then you'll need to update them one by one from the device manager.
If you didn't install it, then install the chipset driver for Intel 5 series chipset. -
Yes I installed the chipset driver using the intel utility on intels site, becuz I knew the drivers on asus website were garbage. Infact, I gave them a call because the P4G and TurboBoost driver they put under 64-bit win7 only work on 32-bit systems so I gave them for that =D
Port 1-6 are all as follows:
Microsoft version 6.1.7601.17514
Date 6/21/2006
How do I update them? thanks -
First you'll need to download a chipset driver that comes as .zip, not the already packaged .exe. Extract it after the download is completed.
Then go to Device manager and browse to where you were before then right click on it and choose "Update Driver Software" > "Browse my computer for driver software". And then browse to where you save the chipset driver, under the main folder which the name should be the version of the chipset driver, there should be a folder called "All", select the folder "All" and click on OK and then click on Next then it should verify and install. Do this for each of them.
This worked on my Intel 7 series chipset but not sure if Intel 5 series will also work too. Anyway, worths a shot. -
I went to the intel website and no search results came up for intel 5 series.... w.t.f?
-
Yea.. it seems like they removed it, but the one on Asus G73JH site should be .zip, not the newest but you can see if you can fix that PCIe error.
-
does that use the same chipset?
this computer uses the HM55 chipset if im no mistake
Intel 5 series 3400 -
Yes G51/60/73(excluding SW) are all using the same chipset, except G73JW has USB3.0. And HM55 is Intel 5 series.
-
Asuming your refering to: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G73Jh
?or is there a g73jh download center on notebook forums -
Yep that's the right place, download the V9.1.1.1027 and see if you can update from device manager manually.
-
Do i need to do all 6 ports separately plus the PCIe root port - D136?
-
Yes, at least that's what I did for my Intel 7 series chipset.
-
I asume this D138 root PCIe port is the PCIm port for the gts360m? I noticed when I updated the driver as you suggested that diablo 3 crashed (oops forgot it was running) then it resized the window apon reopening and changes my screen resolution to 1024x768.
I had to change it all back >< -
You mean you had to change the resolution back or the driver for the PCIe root?
-
No, drive works so far, i think.... sometimes the WHEA error takes a day or two to come back
EDIT: ITS BACK....
A corrected hardware error has occurred.
Component: PCI Express Root Port
Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)
Bus: Device:Function: 0x0:0x3:0x0
Vendor ID: Device ID: 0x8086:0xd138
Class Code: 0x30400
The details view of this entry contains further information -
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_d138 is the hardware ID for one of your PCIe root ports, can you go in each of them and see if you can find one that matches the above hardware ID (just the vendor ID and device ID, ignore anything after d138)?
I don't know very much about the BSOD solving but we can at least identify which root port is making the problem. This will be able tell you which root is making the problem, however for information about what device is connected to that PCIe root port, you might need someone that knows more about BSOD solving to help you.
Edit: I looked into my G73JW, found the exact same hardware ID on my Intel(R) processor PCI Express Root Port 1 - D138. Please check if the Driver provider is Intel, Date is 10/28/2009 or later, Driver Version is 9.1.1.1022 or later. If the provider is still microsoft and date is still all the way back to 2006, try updating it using the 9.1.1.1027 or 9.1.1.1023 chipset driver you downloaded. -
This is the one I updated with the G73 chipset driver:
Intel Processor Root Port 1 - D138
Driver: Intel
Date: 10/28/2009
Version: 9.1.1.1022
U say 1027, or 1022? the one i got from the g73 page gave me 1022 o.0? -
1023 and 1027 is just the version of the package, however, the chipset driver for HM55 contained in both chipset drive is 9.1.1.1022.
So in your case, the driver is updated to 9.1.1.1022 for Intel(R) processor PCI Express Root Port 1, but the PCIe BSOD still happens. I'm not sure what's connected to that PCIe root port but it might be your graphic card. When your laptop BSOD, do you see anything mentioning "nvlddmkm.sys"? See if you can have a look at the text next time the BSOD happens.
Also, when did this first happen? After you install nvidia driver above 300 series? -
This isn't a BSOD, this is an event viewer "error", prior to reformmating, I got a BSOD maybe once or twice a month, and yes while i had the 301.42 driver installed (prior to reformat) I got a bsod involving nvlddmkm.sys, i mcurrenttly using the verde 296.1 driver because its stable
-
So the event error involving PCIe root port started happening after you installed 301.42 and still is happening after switched back to 296.10? Or it's been that way since you bought the laptop?
-
Its been doing it for both driver versions, for the past 6 months or so, I formatted it at the beginning of august
-
Only happen with 296.10 and 301.42? Have you tried older drivers like 260.99?
-
No, wouldn't those reduce performance
-
I know you guys are shooting for a GPU problem.... Buuut, have you had any issues with, or ever considered, your wifi adapter?
-
It depends, normally the reduced performance is with newer cards not older cards. You have a very old card, 360M, and 460M's release is around driver 259, maybe you can try and see if you get error with those.
You said that the error has been up since 6 months ago, so it's not since you bought the laptop, do you remember what's the last thing you did before you saw the first ever PCIe error?
It could be, but so far he only mentioned changingthe VGA driver, well, still need more info regarding to that. The error he's getting only points to the intel processor pci express root port 1 d138, however we don't know what's connected to that root port. -
Is there a way to find out whats connected to that?
I can't recall anything that I have done.... I was bone stock until I reformatted, the only driver I ever updated was the GPU. With this reformat, I have gone looking for updated drivers for everything I can as I no alot of the factory stuff is outdated/broken -
Do you still have the GPU driver that originally came with the G51JX? Just to test if you still get error with that.
-
Ihave no idea which it comes with lol is it 257? or 259 -
The very first driver for G51JX's 360M is 187.66. However, try drivers between 256.10~260.99 to see if you can reproduce the event error. If you still get errors then there are 2 possibilities.
- Not a GPU issue, could be that the other component is introducing the error.
- The issue is related to the GPU hardware wise.
-
I have nearly the same problem. Although I think my G51JX-X1 (i7 model) is bricked because of it. I had updated drivers to the 300 ones in June I think, they took them down later along with the Nvidia forums. First my power adapter over heated, to near burning my hand level of heat, and shut off for good. I thought it was just a piece of equipment failing since my heat on the GPU was about 90-100 at the most but I didn't always have the monitor running. Played Diablo III awhile after that. After they did an update I had a hard crash, the area with the 360m was so hot I did burn myself. When it cooled down, it was running at 121c when I tried playing Skyrim! I shut it down, might have gone higher. Opened it up, cleaned, wasn't too dirty. Repasted, the old paste was rock at that point. Put the drivers back to the 290s, within a week I got nothing but blue screen on start up, it would do code 43 disabling it or would have to do safe mode. Now I can get the GPU to come on but only on battery and only if I hold the power button to close the circuit before hand. It will only idle for a little bit. If you have over one window open, screen tears and goes black, the display driver fails and recovers then eventually BSOD. I tried updating BIOS, fresh installs (With ASUS disk with and w/o original drivers and with Win 7 sp 1 download iso) using different Nvidia drivers, Memtest86+ overnight to name a few. If you look at the Diablo III forums a few people had same issue, I think my paste was so old it fried the GPU though. I was going to take it in to test the DC jack if its not a fried GPU and some other power issue. Its beyond my understanding at this point. Unfortunately I don't have a lot to spend to find out right now.
A little after the Diablo III crash the HDD got filled with copied dll from winsxs and I was barely able to recover a few of the files before it slowed to a crawl. After I reformatted I lost 40g off the 500g somehow, no hidden partitions and the recovery had been deleted awhile before. It also fails the SeaTools DOS short and long test, and will not full erase though SeaTools. I made a DOS prompt boot, got it to full erase and it passes chkdsk and updated the firmware, still fails in SeaTools.
I did run the Intel infinst_auto 9.3 last Win 7 install, though it was the .exe. When I checked the Intel site it detected it was installed. But when I looked it had the Microsoft 2006 driver that was mentioned. And also curious about the WiFi question? -
256.10 BSOD'd me after playing Diablo 3 for 40 minutes
279 Seems to run SUPER HOT.... this laptop never goes over 91*C... but it hit 96*C, still running this driver, no WHEA-logger error yet, but it varies from 1-5 a day. could happen tonight -
It looks like the error is related to the driver. That temperature is considered a danger zone by the way, both the 91C and 96C, you should consider cleaning the dust out of the vent. If that doesn't work and the laptop is out of warranty, you should also consider a repaste.
You can use this guide to assist the disassembly: How to Replace Asus G50V G51JX G60JX M50S N50VN CPU Fan - laptoppartstore -
it's peaked at 91*C since I owned it, and I've had a hundred+ people tell me the GTS360m is within spec upto 100*C. Although it certainly reaches that temp easier in the summer months when the temperature in my house gets close to 28*C+. I am also aware that when the GPU hits 95*C it will be throttled down to 400mhz in order to keep the temperatures rising further (This doesn't occur on the original gtx260 that had overheating issues)
I just got the error this evening with the 279 driver..... -
So the errors can still be reproduced with different drivers, do you remember what were you doing when the error pops?
By the way being said that the chip itself can hold up to 100C, the board might bend because of the always high heat on one side of the card, that's when all sorts of problems come in.
As a safer tip, if you didn't clean the vent every month since you first bought the laptop, now might be a good time to open the back cover and see if there's bunch of dust sticking on the fin of the heatsink, cleaning it won't do you any harm so don't worry. -
I have been trying to purposely reproduce the error to no end.... it seems to be completely random.
Edit:
Today:
Soon as I turned my computer on...
WHEA-Logger event 17 11:19am
Yesturday:
1pm - turn computer on
1-3:30pm - play d3
4-6pm hibernate laptop
6:30-8pm - play wow with some old friends
8:15 - check event log
WHEA-Logger event 17 7:35 PM
Day Before:
11am - turn computer on
11-2pm - play d3
3pm - chek event log
WHEA-Logger event 17 1:37 PM
WHEA-Logger event 17 2:55 PM
Day Before that:
It was hibernating/sleeping all night
in the morning I checked and I got TWO errors while it was f***ing asleep?!
WHEA-Logger event 17 5:35AM
WHEA-Logger event 17 9:35AM
The day before that I was raiding for like 6 hours, GPU was stressing for like 6 hours, it had to be 35*C + outside, 30*C in my house.....
NOT A SINGLE ERROR
BEH!?!? I have a friend of mine tell me I can rule out it being a hardware issue if the error stops with AERO off (switching to windows basic!) -
I see, so it happens randomly. I'm out of juice on this one
, gonna need someone that knows more about this to help you mate. For now I guess you'll have to ignore that error log until there's more help on this
.
And true disabling desktop composition will stop the hardware acceleration towards the aero and desktop v-sync, however it might give you screen tearing when watching a film, you could give it a try. -
I just realized something I hadn't thought about... today....I got a WHEA error the moment I took my laptop out of hibernate.... then I walked away the screen went back (timed out) when i came back to hit the mouse to turn the screen on again, it threw the error again. I changed the hibernate on battery time to 1 minute, and was able to reproduce the error Over and over... however it still also occurs while playing games.
But I have pinpointed ONE source of this error which could help with the other? -
Interesting. Were you also using the hibernate feature before seeing the first ever PCIe error?
-
I use to shut my comptuer down when i didnt use it, now I just hibernate it (last few months) so no, I wouldn't know
-
It seems like the problem lies under hibernation as you were able to reproduce it multiple times, maybe you can try disabling hibernate and just have the screen/HDD turn off after like 15min and see if you still get the error after few days usage.
Edit: What's your BIOS version by the way? Is it later than 204? -
I flashed it when i reformatted, 208.
It still does it at other times, but it seems like hibernate is one time when I can force it to occur. -
I see, from what you have posted it seems like the time it occurs is when the laptop wakes up from hibernation and when playing games.
You mentioned in the 1st post that you didn't install optional drivers, was intel rapid storage technology one of them? Also any specific reason why you didn't install Power4Gear? -
Well the version of P4G on the asus driver page doesn't work... it says there is a compatbility issue, so I downloaded a newer version that someone had used on a G73 with success, and it killed the laptops performance to the point where opening a web browser would freeze the computer and the window would sit at "not responding" for 5-10 seconds.... it became extremely irritating..
According to the fresh format thread you need P4G to use turbo boost, however it works fine without it... so I see no reason to have it running -
You mean TwinTurbo (Boosts BCLK(FSB) from 133MHz to 142MHz) or the intel Turbo Boost (Boosts multiplier)? Intel Turbo Boost doesn't need P4G as it's controlled by the CPU itself, however on the G73JH/JW series, to activate TwinTurbo you need to install P4G. I don't own a G51JX so I'm not sure if G51JX has TwinTurbo feature as well.
And yes, using a version of the P4G that's not designed for your system could result in constant stuttering during normal use.
So, is the Intel Rapid storage technology also installed? -
Yes, IRST is installed.
g51jx only supports Turbo. -
I see.
Can't really figure out where the issue is:
- It 100% happens when woke up from hibernate
- Happens when playing games
- Still happens when hibernate is disabled
- IRST is installed
- Chipset driver updated to the latest for HM55
- PCIe root updated individually
- Error can still be reproduced across different GPU drivers
But you didn't install P4G for G51JX, see if you still can reproduce the error by installing the one that's writen for G51JX. -
I can't, the message comes up when I click on the setup file saying my computer doesn't meet the required specs.... I think asus put the 32-bit version of P4G under 64.. and I cant find the 64 bit version of the generation one i7 family
-
Is the ATK package installed on your laptop?
-
And yea ATK needs to be installed, you can also try G60JX's P4G (Almost the same spec as G51JX but 16"), it's slightly newer than G51JX's P4G, V1.1.25.
