Sense it appears to be a problem with i7 + 260M, we already have confirmation from ASUS they are working with NVIDIA to get this issue resolved. I highly doubt they will just forget about it and write it off. Thats not ASUS's style as we all know.

It is *NOT* a problem with the i7 and 260 specifically, because other systems with that same combo do NOT have the problem.

The only series-wide problem is the broken USB on the PM55 chipset.

I very much hope you are right; bet you are right, not so much.

Managers have a very different view of a product when it goes from a revenue to a cost center, and so do their bosses.

It is only going from Revenue to a Cost Center right now due to the BSOD issue. Once Asus/Nvidia fix this issue, retailers will probably start offering it again.

Some may have taken them off the shelves right now as there having more come back than those going out costing them more money that its worth right now. I would probably give it another month, maybe 2, and we should see a fix to this problem if not sooner. Asus is a highly reputable company and will not leave its users/customers hanging out like that. If they did, I know that this would be the very last product I would ever buy from Asus, to include all my desktop components also...

Ditto. This is my first Asus, and while I haven't had any problems (yet), I am interested in seeing how Asus handles this issue. 'Cause if they leave y'all hanging, it could just as easily be me one day. So if they don't take care of y'all, I certainly wouldn't keep pushing my luck by buying more of their products.

Widespread poor handling of the "throttling" issue is what drove me to Asus and the g51j vs the Dell xps studio 16. Even though I've always gotten excellent service on my m1330, I don't like the way Dell's sort of sitting on the throttling issue and leaving people hanging. So here I am. I'm new to Asus, so I'm willing to give them some time, but I do expect to see this issue resolved for people within 3 months.

I predict many G51-J users are going to be disappointed when a software fix doesn't arrive. I think the BSOD issues you guys are having are probably hardware related due to some cutting corners by Asus (to reduce manufacturing costs). The new G51-J will probably solve this problem and the existing owners, if lucky, will be offered an upgrade and/or warranty service to replace their boards. Worst case scenario being that Asus just ignores the issue but hopefully it doesn't come to that. I know that Dell hasn't done anything about the M15x throttling and I had to find a way around it myself.

Yeah, I'll be shocked if Asus fixes this too.

I'll just be happy if the replacement works, though we won't know that for a while after it's release.

I'm iffy about these PM55 chipsets either way though...

    Hi everyone,

got mine G51J a couple of days and didn't have any BSoD yet with COD4. I've played it for 2hours or more. Haven't done any drivers or bios update, just only the windows important updates. Bought it upgraded with SA5 Thermal Coumpound and Upgraded memory to 4GB 1333mhz.

well...i was thinking of purchasing this computer...but with the BSOD problems I am going to wait for something else I'd say. Anyone else think that waiting or getting this and hoping for a fix is a better option?

I bought it, because I believe Asus will be there to help us. =)
And this laptop is a really great performer!

Worst case; Asus cant figure out whats wrong, and I still have the 2 year global warranty. I would guess continous BSoD would go under the warranty category as a fault to the system, so we're not in any problems eitherway.
Thats what I hope though. =)

recieving my laptop in 3 days, and really looking forward to test it out! :D

Wait. I would never buy a system with a known serious issue.

I woudln't even buy a PM55 chipset system yet until Intel and/or the OEMs get the USB problems fixed.

if you don't mind installing xp for the problematic games, it's a good machine. not sure what the USB problem is, but iirc running xp in vbox on ubuntu i had no problem syncing it (i refuse to install itunes on my primary systems).

Hopefully ASUS patches the BIOS and makes a nice easy flash for the users, but if not...oh my god...coffee, surge... oops i left it on the roof of my car with the screen open during a storm while it was running and then i drove to work and then i urinated on the keyboard before i dropped it off the balcony.

I have been playing Left 4 Dead 2 for a month now. I've played online multiplayer and single player non-online for about 4-5 hours almost every day. I haven't received a BSOD until today. It was about 30 minutes into the game. I am so happy to add yet another game to add to the BSOD list. So happy. Yay Asus.

    Thanks mate ;)

If I do end up getting BSoD I see no reason why the warranty wont cover it. So I dont fear anything.

Best case; I get a great computer!
Wors case; I might have to return it back.

I agree. You MAY be inconvenienced, but I wouldn't think you're throwing your money away. As I've said before, the glowing reviews by both the media and users for the g51j probably means most people are very happy with it. This is a long thread, but I'd be surprised if there are even 100 unique members who have posted about BSODs. The forums on Asus' own site are laughably quiet on this issue.

So, while there's clearly a known problem (and has anyone ruled out anything in common with the suspect games that may be causing a conflict?), I think the odds are still greatly in your favor that you won't experience it. If you do, others here have already suggested creative "solutions" :)

i've got two of these laptops and experience the same problem with usb connected. tried different keyboards and mouses.. nogo :(

when you power the laptop on it may take up to 30 sec to get windows logo only. in my case i'm having it in two ways:
    1. getting splash screen TWICE with no ESC/F2 options on the screen... then finally Windows logo...
    2. splash screen, then ESC/F2 in the lower left corner of the screen and then... flashing cursor on the left side on the top for about 20 seconds...then finally Windows logo...

    that makes me mad
i'm not gaming much (2 hours tops a day) but after the system replacement never got any 124 BSODs. before that i got 124s even after 20-30 min of single gameplay in COD:MW2 or Batman AA...

Just wanted to throw in that I have had my G51J for about a week or so. (Took a bit to get it from the USA studying in Belgium). I also had a the machine BSOD twice (124 error) both times but in Borderlands on single player thus far. However as I am studying for exams I have hardly played too much, so I am sure I will have no fun with these BSOD problems in my future. With regards to this USB problem, I have yet to see anything there but again it is likely too early to say for sure.

Hopefully these problems will be addressed eventually.

I just don't get this. EVERY having to deal with anyone's tech support is a horrendous experience, and the first thing would be to send you either you're or another system that's refurbed, and still has the problem.

Why buy a known defective product? This is hardly Asus' only system. I'd just get a Core 2 based system. You'll save a bit, still have a nice system, and it'll work.

Asus has excellent customer service. I had to send my A7T in for repairs right before the 2yr warranty was expired and I sent it in and got it back in a week with a new mobo, keyboard, hdd, and covering. So I dont know what your talking about horrendous experience with them...

Asus is one of the best companies out there today as far as quality goes. They will get this issue fixed in the near future. They wouldnt release updated versions of this model if they couldnt fix an issue... I just dont understand why you would be so negative towards this small issue with a company that has such a revered reputation.

bingo! That's been exactly my point all along. Why deny yourself a nice system because of a 1-3% (and possibly even lower) chance you might have a problem machine? I don't know of any manufacture that pumps out 100% defect-free equipment...not even Apple.
