    Sorry, could you elaborate more?
You mean you can't turn XP mode for games?

It's a Virtual PC VM. You could probably run really old games in it, but then they'd probably either already run on 7, or else not run XP. Either way, anything remotely new wouldn't run in it.

    WEll finally got my BSOD!
i was playing Combat arms for like 5 mins and then BAM, sound would freeze along with everything else.

Im wondering if this is because i still have my realtek HD driver?

Well, I'm here to add another game. I'm getting the BSOD on Everquest 2 pretty consistantly. I can play for 5-20 minutes at a time. I am playing with my lid open and no external display connected.

I suppose my first step will be to update the driver and I'll go from there...

Just wanted to add EQ2 to the list of problomatic games.

I walked away from my comp and returned to find a new oops in my log, not directly bsod related, but I'm going to dump this here in case it helps anyone else following this thread trying to figure out where the problem is. The trace is the same as the one I posted a few pages back.

mine used to idle at 57-67 depending on the drivers. even between the the 19x series. the newest was the lowest (though 195.55 was the best).

one of the staple games, i had the same issue on a clean install in the early pages. always happens in the first few minutes of playing.

i suppose it's an 0x124 stop? added to my google'd post anyway. thanks.

    added as well.

no, that just makes me think it's a conflict between nvidia's (win7) driver and asus' implementation even more.
think about it, lower settings = lower gpu usage = lower chance of bsod. new p55 chipset makes it ripe for error. the bugcheck indicates PCI-E, and it almost certainly isn't the LAN card. it happens in games and games only.

and the only difference between a game and a stress tool would be the way it loads textures or processes them (polygon mutations too, but i don't see how it could go wrong).

going to stab at a longshot here:
has anyone enabled transparency AA in nvidia's control panel, or a much higher AA, or enabled all of the optimizations? (if you can live with framerates in the 20's, see how long til it BSoD's with those)

LOL sorry this post was hilarious! I know this isn't supposed to be comical but if you read the post and imagine all the excitement of solving the BSOD only to edit it later with a BSOD message..haha.

yeah. Looks like the g51 is being tied in with the 60 as far as Asus is concerned. I just flashed my BIOS to 204, downloaded from the g51 site, mind you, and my system now says it's a g60.

Found this in my inbox this morning too. Will def mention bsod problems if possible.

    Edit:

    ARGH!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^^!^

I just filled out the ENTIRE SURVEY and this is what I get trying to hit submit on Firefox:
"You have not filled in all the answers!"

ASUS has no idea how to do cross-browser compatible javascript. If you're going to attempt to take this survey, do it in IE or Firefox with NoScript.

My G51J has is still running stock everything. I have had bsod 3 times previously.

Recently I had a new type of error while playing Torchlight through steam. The game froze at the loading screen. I left but upon returning there was a black dos-like screen talking saying there was an error with the Atheros PCIE controller version 4.0.0.2. It was trying to do something with DHCP but was unable to, and then asked for a boot device. I forced shutdown.

I don't know too much else about this but I saw some people talking about network stuff earlier in the thread and thought this might help. At least it's more informative then the 124 screen.

    Merry Christmas folks!
Getting my laptop at 29th, and I'll do what I can to deliver reports if I end up getting BSoD.

Nothing informative to say now, other than wishing you all a joyfull holiday!

    Hi All,

I too have suffered continuous BSODs during gaming. Playing COD:WAW, and EQ2 would give me a BSOD anywhere between 10sec to 2 minutes.

Days ago I updated to 205 BIOS, the latest chipset and was between 195 and the beta 196 GeForce drivers. The BSOD results were the same.

Today I have found my most stable set up with over 4 hours gaming and no BSODs... yet. I did a driver sweep followed by rolling back my display drivers to 186.

Obviously 4 hours of no BSODs does not equate to the issue being conclusively resolved but here's a walk-through of how to get to my setup:

For starters I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

    1. Flash to BIOS 205 from ASUS's website. To find 205 you need to look up the G60J model. The G51J and the G60J share the same motherboard. You can use ASUS Winflash utility to update your BIOS.
    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx

    2. Update your Motherboard chipset drivers to Version V9.1.1.1019 via ASUS's website. You can find these looking under model G51J. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx

    3. Download & install Driver Sweeper from Guru3D. This program sweeps all traces of old drivers from your computer that even Uninstall would leave behind. This will ensure a clean slate before installing the 186 display drivers.
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

    4. Download GeForce GTX 260M Version 186.81 NVIDIA Display drivers from NVIDIA's website. Do not install yet.
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

    5. Navigate to "Add or Remove Programs" and uninstall "NVIDIA Drivers". Your screen will revert to a basic mode and run on safe mode generic drivers. I recommend resizing your resolution to the highest possible as Driver Sweeper's UI doesn't handle low resolutions too well.

    6. Now run Driver Sweeper in Administrator mode. Assuming you have administrator rights, it is as simple as right clicking on the icon and clicking on "Run as administrator". Click on the "NVIDIA - Display" check box and then click on the "Clean" button. Your computer should now be clean of all NVIDIA display drivers. Close Driver Sweeper. DO NOT reboot your computer as Windows 7 will automatically try to find new display drivers if you do.

    7. Now install the NVIDIA Display Drivers.

    8. Reboot.

    That should do it.

Let me know if anyone else has success or failure.

    Good luck!

People have reported the problem being really intermittent. I wouldn't call it solved with only 4 hours of use

Plus the BIOS is the only thing there that should really change anything. I mean other systems are stable (though have USB issues) with those same chipset and GPU drivers.

Not that most will care but flashing to the 205 BIOS breaks the ASUS Splendid Utility (which I like a lot). Running Repair doesn't work; I had to uninstall and reinstall completely. I couldn't find the program under the G60, either, so used the G51 version.

Anyone know what 205 is supposed fix over 204? Groceries?

I stated getting bsod after running backtrack 3 live cd....
    what could be the problem?
Maybe is the dual hardrive making it unstable, or bad ram??

Okay, this is weird: my Windows Experience Index numbers changed after updating BIOS from 204 to 205 (there were no other changes). Numbers are 204 then 205:

    7.1 CPU 7.0
    7.3 Mem 7.3
    6.6 Aero 6.7
    6.6 3D 6.7
    5.8 disk 5.8

I know the WEI doesn't mean much but just present this as a data point.

The score isn't always consistent. My WEI score with BIOS 205 is:
    CPU: 7.1
    Mem: 7.3
    Aero: 6.7
    3D: 6.7
    HDD: 5.9

They are working on it, so I dont think opening more threads, or spaming the forums will help.

Do as you where told several times (you, as in you people with BSoD). Opload the error logs you where asked to, so that the ASUS folks can have something to work with.

Complaining without giving real help will only insult the ASUS team, and not further help you in getting to a solution.

Yes, Jack from LB1 posted in a forum in Oz that fact, claiming "3 month SKU standard Asus practice"

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1300563&p=36#r706

I wondered aloud about a variety of things but got nuthin (new models - arrandale? radeon 5xxx? or perhaps Issues - forward failure projections? dare I say some uncorrectable bad hardware?)

Looks like it's being replaced with a 3D model (1366x768 res, yuk)

You're right, I re-ran it and my CPU score went back to 7.1. Interesting because the WEI on my Vista machines never changed unless I made a change to the hardware or drivers. Maybe the change from a 5.9 to a 7.9 scale made it more "granular" and easier to get run to run variations.

This is not good news; are we about to be orphaned? I can't imagine ASUS or any other company is going to spend any time or resources troubleshooting issues with a discontinued product that they no longer offer for sale.

Dang...a replacement already? I'm concerned it's going to be broken too though. I mean if they haven't fixed this or talked about it, why would the next one with similar hardware be any better? :(

im sure this laptop will be on the table for a while, just different varations. This laptop is only 2 months old so I highly doubt that they will discontinue it so fast! They will be just selling "upgraded" variations of this. Much like this one is an upgraded version of the G51VX model.

That could be true but as a business decision you put your techs on fixing issues with the configurations that are still out in the marketplace actively being promoted and sold. For example if the "new" G51 has a 360M card, and the BSOD is specific to the i7 + 260M combo, we'll likely never see a fix unless one of the adepts here finds it.

I know it's supposed to be an upgrade, but the G51VX was stable and USB worked, so far as I know...

Assuming it was still available and had an LED backlit screen, I'd get that :-/
