    yes, I updated to 204.
After 204 it is much more long-lasting:

My MW2 crashes after around 4-5 hours of playing, not every time, though.
It just prefers crashing once I get 5~6 in a row kills.
Borderlands - depends. Around 2 hours to somethings up to around 8 hours.

    (I admit I play long hours :D )

Of course, after 4-5 hours of gaming you'll need a kain to walk, cause all your lower half will have fallen sleep. :p

the mouse has NOTHING to do with this problem. y would a moues cause BSOD? the mamba has inbuilt memory, so i delete drivers and keep all setting in the mouse. i also have the copperhead and do the exact same.

Ok it's official; turbo boost function is very unstable with some applications such as Photoshop CS4 and Autodesk 3ds Max (both 64-bit). With turbo boost enabled things are sometimes jumpy and random. For example; sometimes in Photoshop it's impossible to use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select an area, because the selection area is inaccurate and jumpy compared to my intended actions. Something serious is up with the new Core i7 addition to this notebook model.

I'm wondering if people get jumpy inaccurate action's in games as well using the mouse before it bsods. Any type of mouse.

Where did you hear this from? Mind sharing a link? Last but not least....should I think about cancelling my order or is this something that can be fixed?

i seriously suggest someone else tries installing xp. ive been running on it for two weeks without issues (while keeping win7 for those few extra minutes on batteries).

Cheeseman, do you have openGL acceleration on or off?

I didn't have to hear it, I've been working on an intensive architectural project none-stop for the past 22 hours and I've had a tone of time to test the turbo boost feature on AutoCAD, 3ds Max 2009 and Photoshop CS 4(all 64-bit). These are all CPU intensive programs and without a doubt this feature enabled was causing a very sloppy performance in all those applications.

I've tried both Direct3D and OpenGL acceleration on with the same issues.

I've gone through 3 other ASUS notebooks prior to this one and I trust ASUS will get this issue resolved. A fix could be as easy as a new BIOS release from ASUS.

they've already released one without much change.

turn off all acceleration in Photoshop/AutoCAD. with it on, every operation is done via GPU.

My G51J that is on order right now will actually be my second one from ASUS as well. My first one is this G2S that I'm typing on right now in fact...hasn't really let me down yet. There was a couple of scares here and there, but overall I've been pretty happy so far. My G51J needs to last me a minimum of two years...as per the wife and our contract. Stipulation D sub section 5 states that I can't ask for another computer for a minimum of two years from the order date. lol But in her defense....I did just build a new gaming desktop earlier in the year.

I purchases the G51j-a1 from BuyDig.com about 2 weeks ago.

At the beginning it was beautiful, ran with no problems.

After the first week, I had issues with steam freezing my PC (had to hard boot). No matter what I tried steam would freeze up my pc. I simply backed up my steam game files and uninstalled it.
Recently (today), the laptop froze for no good reason, just surfing the web, given the lack of rationale for this, I became frustrated, and looked around, found this website and the new bios update announcement.

I just installed the bios update. But even without it, games like Shadowrun , fallout 3, batman arkham asylum have been working perfectly.

Will update with the status of this bios update and the steam issue.

EDIT: Steam still freezing up computer. It works in safe mode. Could be something with the audio drivers. Also, second random freeze occured with bios 204. This laptop just gets worse everyday.. :S

I'm really thinking about taking my g60vx back and spending more for this g51j because of the higher resolution screen and i7.. But are theyre people who have this laptop and No Blue screens?? Specifically with Aiononline???? If someone has been able to play that game with or without problems please post

The G51J is also about $500 more than the G60VX. Personally I don't think it's worth the price difference. The G51J's screen is higher resolution but the quality is subpar.

I play Aion without any problems on my G51J

I am however getting many BSOD's playing Modern Warfare 2.

It's the 124 error that others have posted about, 2.04 bios didn't help.

Is there any updates on this issue

yea i actually think that the best deal is the X3A, 1250 no tax free shipping, it works great, runs quite a bit cooler compared to the hot running A1 version (CPU for C2Q/i7). You can install a secondary 320GB easy, the real upgrade is 250USD for a 60USD mouse, 50USD bag, 75USD second HDD + bracket and i7 (that is obviously paired with DDR3, but DDR3 isn't hardly practical to be called a "decent" upgrade). Seeing how hot the i7s run, the X3A is the best, especially since the CPU has a lot of headroom for OC'ing (3.12GHz stable).

MW2 does not crash on XP, beat campaign on veteran in 6/7 hours or so with a bit more in idling.

I read quite a bit of this thread, however I am still undecided. Should I go with the X3A as SACH7002 said, or should I go with the A1 and kind of worry about heat issues?

Seems like you have money to blow. If that's the case, then you should move up to an Alienware M15x or Sager NP8690.

Alright, I've been reporting here to see any updates and most of it is off topic..

Anybody do anything that solved their issues?

MY g51j-a1 still locks up once in a while, bsods in fallout 3 now all of a sudden (After 2-3 hours of gameplay), and ALWAYS locks up when trying to launch steam.

Maybe turbo is the cause of BSOD. Try playing Battlefield 2 without turbo and see if you get BSOD.

You are most probably infected with something. I had the same issue and mine was due to malware (the lock ups, specially with steam) I strongly advise you to save the important data to another HDD and do a full format with system restor (F9 during POST, several times until the menu for recovery shows up).

It only took about 30 mins to get all my stuff back in place no games lost (save the steamApps folder, those are your games) and then reinstall steam. Before loging in for the first time, move the steamApps folder back in place where you installed it.

I was contemplating that... wasnt sure if it was the crap i installed or just the ASUS laptop issues... but ill reformat...

On a side note... anybody try the BIOS restore where you had to click the button for 30 seconds? I wanted to know if that would be useful for me to try along with my clean format..

    thanks for the insight

I actually had no problems at all with Borderlands when I first got my G51j. I was able to play through the game with no BSODs. After the latest borderlands patch 1.01, I started getting BSODs during the game and sometimes even during the title screen. So it might be the patch too.

Ok, so I recovered the laptop with fresh windows 7 format.

No difference at all from before.. Steam still locks up my whole pc when launched (freezes even quicker now)... Yet again it works in safe mode though..

Anybody else encounter this problem? I have no clue why it is doing this...

okay so I explicitly turned off turbo boost using the asus power4gear utility. Just switch to high performance mode and turn off turbo boost. I was able to play borderlands without any bsod for about 2-3 hours. seems to have fixed my problem.

While it wasn't a BSOD, I did have a few game crashes while playing World of Warcraft last night.

Twice while my wife and I were questing on a couple of our alts in Zul' Drak and then again once more later on when I was running around in Dalaran. I didn't get any kind of error notifications, the game just locked up and closed itself. I was able to restart the game right play again right away on each occasion of this happening.

I looked in my windows logs to see if there were any windows errors occurring around the time of the crashes, and nothing really stands out. But honestly I can't remember the times that the crashes happened. I'll play again today and see if it happens again.

This happened on both the stock video card driver, and 186.81 from nvidia. The BIOS I'm currently using is the stock one that came with the laptop which is 203. And I have had the turbo boost turned off using the power4gear utility while being in high performance mode. After the 2nd lock up I did turn on the turbo boost to extreme turbo or whatever, because the 2nd lock up was within 5 minutes of the first. After I turned on the turbo boost I didn't have any problems until later on, but that was after a reboot and turbo boost had reset itself back to off. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I figured I would mention it.

Anyone else have any problems with playing WoW?

    @ largefarva ^

I had tried WoW since I first got the G51J on stock drivers/bios/power4gear and I haven't had a problem with it even after updating to 186.81 and later turning on extremeturbo and then later patching to 204. So far I would only get BSODs in Fallout3 and Crysis and ONCE when I was just web browsing and I definitely can't remember WoW crashing, whether BSOD or just closing itself. Not much help to you largefarva, sorry, but thats my info so far.

Well just got done playing for the past hour to hour and a half and didn't have the game lockup and shut down on me. Only difference is that I didn't have speedfan running the background to monitor temperatures. Hopefully this continues.

Those of you that are having BSOD's should try uninstalling all the Asus software. See if you still have any issues after that. It's probably the Asus ATK driver that is the cause of the BSOD.

There's multiple ATK drivers. One that controls the OSD, the other ACPI, another for hotkeys etc. Just get rid of them all along with the Power4Gear Hybrid utility and see if the BSOD issue disappears as a test. You can always reinstall them later on (they're on the dvd that shipped with your system).

Oddly, I haven't ran across a BSOD yet on my system. Then again, I haven't gamed excessively since I got this laptop (damn work and certification exam)

I'll be willing to leave a game on when I'm afk or sleeping. If I get a BSOD (or not get one) I'll post back here

Ok so mine is back with another os reinstall from the RMA center. I also upgraded the bios to 204 which they did not.

I had 6 BSOD's Saturday playing COD4 on a LAN even after turning off AA. Is there anything out there that works. Does Asus support need anymore info?

Actually uninstalling all the ASUS software (including ATK drivers and Power 4 Gear) doesn't help at all:/ I'm getting BSOD in the CoD:WaW righ after starting the game, after about 30 seconds. What is interesting - when i was experimenting earlier with the Power 4 Gear settings, the lower value was set to the max processor usage, the longer time it took to get BSOD in this game. I also have BSOD in Crysis and Call of Duty 4.

I'm getting crazy with this problem:/

For those of you with BSOD. Have you test other games to see if they BSOD on you?

Also, try to run the games with CPUID Hardware Monitor to record the max temperature for GPU

I've tested some games to check if the BSOD affects them.

    Games as:

    Dragon Age
    NFS Shift
    Call of Juarez 2
    Prototype
    Tom Clancy's HAWX
    Fallout 3
    FEAR 2
    Sims 3
    COD Modern Warfare 2
    Star Wars The Force Unleashed

    didn't crash because of BSOD.

    Crysis
    COD World at War
    COD Modern Warfare

crashed in my case - >BSOD

Temps are OK, I always have HWmonitor switched on during gaming sessions and my temp never goes higher than 85-87C (notebook works on Zalman NC2000). So I think it's not the issue of overheating:/

It seems that BSOD only affect some users. I didn't experience any BSOD on borderland or on COD MW2. I'm going to borrow my friend's COD WaW to see if it BSOD on me.
