clean install of windows 7 with just borderlands installed and no asus stuff, 195.55 drivers, and hwmonitor/tmonitor running (turbo boost on), it took about 8 hours of borderlands in 2 runs to have it bsod.

ill try without turbo boost within the week and see how it goes.

I used 195.55 drivers and no asus stuff installed and I was getting BSOD very quickly in COD: World At War. I haven't played Borderlands, so I can't tell what is the situation in my case with this game, but Modern Warfare 2 runs OK.

I might get my hand on World at world on either Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on when I go see my friend. I will try it out and see.

How long does it take for you to get BSOD on World at war?

With high settings (1920x1080, all high) it took about 1 minute or less to get BSOD in World at War. It was when G51J was set to High Performance Profile. When i used for example Entertainment profile with max processor usage set to 50% BSOD appeared later, after couple of minutes or more. I really don't know what is the reason of this...

Alright everybody, I'm trying to troubleshoot my issue for myself (I too have gotten BSODs playing Fallout 3 but only twice, I dont get much time to game for over 1 hour at a time)

But my main issue now is my inability to launch steam without freezing my windows PC. Steam works in safe mode (with no audio obviously). Ryzeki had the same issue and tried an OS reinstall and that worked for him, but not myself.

Recently, I tried to test the double click settings within my Razer Habu config tray (this option should be available for the Razer config that came with the copperhead as well).
When I double clicked, the sound that was supposed to have come up (glass breaking), resulted in some sort of tripping sound where it froze my windows 7 just like steam did. I have tried this 3 times and so it was not merely a coincidence.

It appears my issues seem to be caused from audio drivers I guess? I know ASUS shipped the laptop with the Creative audio software and the realtek HD audio manager software.

For anyone who has a working steam on 64bit windows 7 with this particular laptop, did you change anything about the audio drivers or software that came shipped with the laptop? They seem to be what I think is the issue with my computer.

I just played 3 hours of World at War with 1920x1080 and all high setting with high performance profile. No BSOD!
I use Dox 185.85 driver. Maybe you should give that a try?

I really don't get it:/ I used Dox Drivers also but it didn't help - always BSOD. Only one time i could play WaW for more than 15 minutes. Maybe it's the issue of some drivers...

Anyone tried to play some game affected by BSOD (like Borderlands or COD4) right after clean install of Win7 without any programs or ASUS software installed?

I had also the problem of freezing in Windows, but recovery of Win 7 and new bios fixed that.

fuyuki, could You please list your installed software and drivers which You have on Your OS? I'm talking only about system or ASUS sofware, not Your games or private applications :)

    Hey
I got an idea to solve this problem.
We should First find out which part of the system is causing this problem
    - is it the windows 7?

    - the Core i7?

    -the hard drive over heating?

-the Compatablilty between gtx 260 and core i7

    -Bios?

we should try to narrow down and pin point the source of the BSOD.
I belive we can fix this problem and say Good Bye to BSOD.
It will just take some time and dignostics.

Oh and if you guys can, try to get help from a Real Real Expert.
    like call them or something.

There is a thread on the ASUS forums concerning this BSOD issue. Actually I tried to solve if its the software issue this but it also exists on a clean Win7 install, so I assume it's the bios or hardware problem...

I'm really mad cause I got my copper blocks shipped to me today and I was planning to do a Forge Mod (btw - great idea Forge) in my G51J, but in this case I don't know if it's worth doing, I'd really like to solve the BSOD issue first...

updates like these are rarely announced

i am not a real expert, but as i pointed out earlier, the bsod is most likely because of a mem mapping problem

    or you could call...

if it were hardware, xp (and linux) should be affected as well. after 40 hours of cod4 i don't think that's the case.

    I just got my G51J yesterday and I've yet to get a BSOD on Linux :p :p :p :p

    (yes that was a JOKE!)

I've also yet to run windows on my G51J, so I can't really add much to this thread. But I've been in Linux for about 7 hours straight without a hiccup. I'll report later after I get CODMW2 installed on my Win7 partition.

b can be black if X crashes :p

for anyone installing xp, AVOID 195.55 (notebook) if you plan on playing borderlands. go with 195.62 instead.
after a little more cod/bds/dragon age, i will take a stab and say these drivers feel better than any other 195.x i tried (xp and 7). not much of a performance difference, eg. cod jumps from 55 to 57 minimum (broadcast, looking at parking lot towards building in spec), but they seem a lot smoother.

edit: tried playing borderlands on win7, crashed after 3 hours with turbo, 20 mins disabled. cod went smoothly for several rounds/no bsod.

    Hi

I have a G51J and have been using it for the past 2.5 weeks. I been using it as a high end workstation. I've played some games on it but the majority of the time I use it for work. That mean that it runs for up 12-14 hours a day.

    I have upgraded to 204.

I have been getting blue screens running applications. I don't think its the applications. I think its the Overclocking or turbo boost. Everytime I used the Power4Gear and put it into a Performance mode the unit gets hot. The fan becomes more active and within 2 hours I start getting BSOD.

I am using stock driver for everything except the graphic card driver. I use dox 185.85 for video driver.

I install every asus software on the driver and utility disk that came with the laptop.
I seriosuly don't know why I'm not getting bsod on Borderland or COD.

But I do know for sure borderland is glitchy. I put everything on high with native resolution, and sometimes the screen would flash as if the graphic card is overheating and about to shut down. I check the temperature and I'm at max 92C on borderland.

by the way , where is this laptop made in? China?
because i heard the chinese people took old micro chips and made them look new and sold them to companies. I saw on news where the us military bought some computer chips from china and installed it on their fighter jet, and they would malfunction real bad.
If this laptop is assembled or made in china, chances are the chips are crap.
    (no offence)
but china is well known for their "fake" products.
there was a case where they made fake baby food and it containted toxins from cement!!!! and many babies died.
ALSO!! FAke Eggs, fake money, fake i phone, fake monitors, fake computers, fake laptops, fake FOOD, Fake EVERYTHING!!!

For all we know, the Whole country is probably fake.

Anyways, is this laptop made or assembled in china?

PS.. I saw on news and they said that there is more FAKE coins then Real Coins in china!!?!
    sigh....

Well, I have an update if anybody has been following my issue (that was a joke)

It seems that uninstalling all the audio software and drivers, and installing the realtek high definition audio driver found on the asus support site, fixed my freezing problem. Computer has not frozen once in the past 2 days , while i am running steam perfectly.

I am wondering if I am missing out on anything with the Creative software uninstalled from the laptop? does this affect sound quality at all?

I know that the laptop supports EAX Advanced HD. I usually use headphones (planning on getting a set of Razer Morays).. But im not too qualified in the audio department, so if anybody could advise me as to whether I am missing out on anything with my current configuration in terms of audio.

Honestly ASUS what the h*ll is wrong with this computer? I have only one game installed and from the beginning I've only seen problems. First was BOSD, but that went away after turning Extreme Turbo on. Now whenever I play the game weird things start happening randomly with the laptop. For example, during the game the computer starts making beep noises through speaker or earphones and it'll skip scenes a few times and at time if I press "D" or "Space" keyboard key’s it'll start making the noise even more. At some point I couldn't use the in game chat, because the keyboard wouldn't type text. I mean its a 4 yearold game and it never game me issues on my ASUS M51, M50 or the G50vt.
It’s not only games that are an issue, but today I lost a portion of my work, because 3ds Max decided to freeze while the fan went on and so I was forced to end the task. For what its worth I love this notebook in most part, but it's been almost a month since people started noticing these issues, so I expect a fix from ASUS or a replacement.

Yes. Made in China, probably for the cheap labor.
I understand that most non-Chinese would have the same feeling towards China about its fake products, but I think it is a bit naive to draw a conclusion so prematurely.
To be honest, I do not like China either, but I believe in QC.
"Made in China" would not really mean the whole product is made in China. I presume some parts (e.g. the CPU) will be made in Malaysia or other parts of the world, and after assembly ASUS and the retailer will perform QC on the product, and even if it fails afterwards, there is 2~3 years warranty.
I do hope ASUS will provide an ultimate fix on the issue, though.

Hi all... Just posting my experiences. Bought a G51j new from Ottawa on Friday. It had the latest BIOS already installed. Have been playing MW2 for about 3 hours and in that time had 3 x bsod. The word disappointed hardly describes what Im feeling about this notebook. However, Im optimistic for a fix

I've had no BSOD yet on my G51J, I must be doing something wrong. ;) I finished COD MW2 single player and did some multiplayer yesterday, probably a total of 5 hours, no problems on max settings @ native res in performance mode (no turbo). Stock factory Win7 install, latest BIOS, latest drivers.

I think I may know what your problem is.

I tried playing Batman and the same thing happened to me... Turns out by default (maybe just for me), two additional chinese languages were added to my keyboard settings, and to switch to them you had to press shift and alt, so I would do that on accident, and it would render most of my keyboard useless in-game.

Check your keyboard language settings, and delete any additional languages, and the hotkeys to switch to them, if they may appear.

When I had that issue, pressing space in batman would bring up a beeping sound.

So far, with the creative EAX software uninstalled (just stuck with the Realtek HD audio driver provided on the ASus support website for this laptop), I have not encountered any actual freezing of the computer itself, or BSOD in game (played alott of fallout 3 the other day).

Made in China means that was where it was assembled. if you dug into the laptop itself, the wifi card (maybe cpu/gpu) will have 'Made in' tags (1000 and 5300 are also China).

as mentioned, the keyboard thing would probably be because of the language packs.

    what game?

never knew cod ran in wine :p.
it's not the greatest game to check, as i went through 6 hours of sp on veteran without issues as well. MW1 and borderlands are best, but still flaky on it.

Whenever I press shift and ctrl (or was it alt) at the same time in the Batman demo it would somehow switch languages to chinese and render almost all the controls useless. Gives me the beep too. I would have to exit and restart to fix.

The "problems" aren't really major issues making the laptop in any way useless in performing its tasks. Don't let my previous comments scare you off, cause I probably might have been stressed out or something. :p
I rather call it "annoyances" more than anything. I'm no-longer getting BSOD in Battlefield 2 while running Extreme Turbo mode and the 'beep' noise was due to a simple keyboard setting change I was not aware of. I've already ran other games such as Crysis and Operation Flashpoint 2 without any issues. Not to forget that these past few weeks since my purchase I've put this notebook through hell with 3D modeling, AutoCAD, photoshop, etc. and it has gotten the job done quite well, so I overall even with a few annoyances here and there I call this laptop a win. Plus I can assure you that Joker5150 never had a G51J-A1, his comments were based on the G51Vx.

Yeah apparently the G51VX was a more stable machine. Nonetheless, both share the same chasis, similar cooling design (1 fan/heatpipe for the GPU) and same low grade screen.

Yea, they were all based on the G50 and I for one knew what I was getting since I previously owned a G50Vt and was very satisfied with it. Don't get me wrong I mean no disrespect I know you were just stating your personal experience and dislikes based on your hands on experiance with the G51Vx, but I believe in some area's it all depends on the persons own perspective. As for the issues with the J model, it has nothing to do with cooling design, but much rather the new technology and the coding behind it.

A friend of mine actually got the same laptop but he has the BSOD issue with BF2. How did you manage to fix it?

Through battery options go to Power4Gear Hybird and turn on Extreme Turbo before you start Battlefield 2.

The problems with the G51J are most likely software based. Unless Asus yet again cut corners on some component (e.g. audio chip) that is the cause of the issues. Speaking of which, those of you with BSOD should try to disable the audio in the control panel as well as uninstall Asus software and then see if you still get BSOD. You guys need to start to actively troubleshoot the cause instead of waiting on Asus to release a fix which may never come.
