The idle settings are built into the vBIOS. To change those you would ned to load the stock vBIOS into RBE, and then edit the values. Save and flash.

did all the steps except otional and got a VSOD/GSOD after 3dmarek06 for 5mins
didnt work for me
Getting so frustrated with this CRAPtop
cant play any games, get random GSOD in windows,
reinstalled 4 x windows, tried every driver from 10.1 to 10.7 (driver sweeper, etc yes yes did all this)
Temps go well into the 100C plus in 3dmark... is this normal? -
go to the first post and download 10.7a. may fix your gsod issues. seems like a good candidate. 100C temps aren't that good, despite what Asus says.
-
10.7a did not work for me on stock clocks 700/1000.
-
Try overclocking to 705/1100 and see how long you can run em, I'm at 1 hour 45 minutes so far on furmark
-
is giving it in to the service center a good idea? if they repaste or something...?
-
better than you doing it if you have no experience
-
ok the 10.7a made it through 3dmark06 which is a first for any driver except the 10.1.... so far thats good
BUT lower FPS on the 3dmark, and a lower score... something else might be in this fixor
temps ran average 72/88/79 so i hope this is ok
--> so far i can tell if a driver will work. when windows logo comes up it will screen tear if the driver is not going to work. never tears on 10.1. this time 10.7a didnt tear either.
BUT not getting my hopes up. will try some SC2 and post back later -
Well, I have my results. You'll have to tell me if they're good or not, I feel like it was a bit hot.
Upgraded to the beta drivers (did a full uninstall, driver sweep, cc cleaner registry 'fix' then installation), changed my clock settings to 700/1000 then ran the FFXIV benchmark. Went just as well as before, no score difference (it was a few hundred lower than when I had my settings at 800/1100, of course). Note that after about 10-12 runs, I've only gotten a GSOD once in the past, so this wasn't surprising.
Then I ran furmark. My first time doing it, so I hope the settings and version of the program were right. Stability test, windowed, 1920x1080, No MSAA, Xtreme Burning, Post processing. It ended up staying at 93 degrees for the most part, sometimes down to 92, sometimes up to 94. No crash for the full 2 hours.
Screenshot (the ss is at a low resolution for some reason, but again, it was done at 1920x1080): http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b65/datenshireverie/furmark-1.png
Edit: It might help to know that my idle temp is 64, and that my room tends to be relatively hot (bah- no central air). -
update for me: SC2 was going to crash at 700/1000 kept screen tearing and going black and back again.
switched to 705/1100 and finished game without problem. will try again for more testing. the game temps were around 95 at hottest part, that is all setting ultra, vsync, running 2 screens with skype video chat (also uses gpu)
starting to think 94-98C is normal for these G73JH
still not sold on the new driver cause o the tearing etc. will see what happens tonight
EDIT: 2nd SC game without a hitch
EDIT 2: tried 805/1100 locked up on 3dmark06, tried 755/1100 finished and gave better results. temps similar.
Edit 3: still going. runs at 95 but whatever... got my warranty i guess -
Well I ran with 10.7a
2 x FFXIV Benchmark - No problems
A session of furmark while I got dinner ready - No problems
4 x FFXIV Bench mark - No problems there either
So for me, 10.7a has been a great so far.
Previously I would GSOD with 10.7 doing the FFXIV benchmark in the first run.
For now I'll do some real testing of playing games and using the notebook as I usual do and will keep track of GSOD (if any)
For the 10.7a install I uninstalled 10.1 > reboot into safe mode > Driver Sweep > reboot > Install 10.7a > Reboot. -
Been gaming for the last 3hrs on graphic intensive games, still no GSOD.
-
much appreciated. I'll have to try this out, too -
During the tests the GPU would sit around 95-97C on furmark. Never would really go much higher than that.
It's getting late here in Australia, so i'm downloading FFXIV beta while I go to bed. I'll run furmark for an hour tomorrow perhaps and a few more FFXIV benchmarks. I'm not saying the GSOD issue is gone completly yet, but it's looking good thus far. -
-
I'll post again tomorrow with more activity. Really hope this is fixed up though! -
I tried em and still got GSODs. Dont expect much.
-
HellCry: You're like a small ball of Entropy just waiting to happen.
Sorry that the new drivers didn't help you.
I ran 2 Furmarks on these, 2hrs each, with the usual settings, and at 700/1000. Ran glitch-free. I hope at least this driver pack helps some people.
BTW, I didn't install the HydraVision drivers, since I don't need anything like that, and I like to minimize installations. -
I'm got my G73 maybe 2 months ago and I updated the drivers when I first got it and started experiencing the GSOD. Did some research and decided to just revert back to the stock 9.12 drivers, because they worked. I had some down time this week so I figured I'd look and see if Asus fixed it yet and I found this forum.
I just tried following your steps and going to 10.7a and it didn't help me. Ran furmark first and had a black crash about 4 minutes / 94 degrees in. I figured, "hey atleast it wasn't a GSOD," and decided to try a game out. Booted up Borderlands and GSOD within 5 minutes of playing that.
So the 10.7a drivers definitely don't work for everyone. I'm still a little worried about trying to go to Ziddy's vBios, but I might try that tomorrow. I heard that Asus' thermal paste might be at fault, but isn't it true that every computer company uses crap thermal compound.
I'm satisfied enough using my old 9.12 drivers. I'll just stick with them until ASUS finally decides to do something for its customers. -
EckoAbrams: Did you follow the rest of the guide, and update P4GH and such?
BTW, thanks everyone for your feedbacks! Keep them coming. -
Yes, I followed the rest of the guide and updated Power4Gear. I just tried overclocking to 705/1100 and that seemed to stablize it (made it through 15 minutes of furmark and 30 minutes of Borderlands). However Furmark said my temps topped out at 100C and that seems very high to me. Also, I need this laptop to last me atleast 4 years (through college) and I'm a bit worried about having to Overclock just for stability. Has anyone had success underclocking with the same results?
-
-
what are the cons to using ziddy v3 again?
-
-
-
-
Chastity why in the world would you even want to have P4G? Its a pretty useless program, just does what windows power profiles do... And that Twin Turbo is a joke, it actually gives less performance...
DRevan 100C is by no means good. -
try AMD gpu clock tool .... set gpu to 705/1100 or 755/1100
i am using 755/1100 with 10.7a and no issues
10.7a + stock = BSOD
10.7a + 755/1100 = stable
got no idea why. i guess every time a new catalyst comes out i will have to find out where the gpu is stable. NOT happy at all. there are some serious issues with this laptop.
like i said in previous update 10.7a + gpu clock runs at 90-97 degrees celcius in games and about 72 sitting around. i think we just have to get used to these temps unless we want to rip our system apart or send it away for weeks and maybe maybe maybe they fix it.
when not playing game i drop it to 300/300 and temps sit at 55. not convinced yet but so far so good
All these GSODS i thought i installed windows wrong. Asus really messed up. We should ALL be complaining!! the more we speak up the more we get fixed!! -
what exactly does an updated vbios help with??
-
-
If the information reports from catalyst control center showing catalyst version is 10.6, which is true 10.6 version i'm running? Despite Catalyst control center version is showing 2009.1217.1632.29627
-
no. you are running the driver version.... that is your vga graphics
the catalyst version is just the control center. i previously ran 10.7 control center with 9.12 drivers -
-
Nevermind, guys - despite every step on the guide on the first post of this thread, my machine started GSODing again.
I'm returning this thing to Frys, so I had to make sure that it would act up again if I tried running, say, Furmark - or else they'll charge me a 15% restocking fee. Thank goodness I checked, because the thing would NOT crash on impulse like it used to before I did the steps. I flashed back to stock vBios, and it now crashes on command like I need it to. So that vBios definitely does help, some.
Good luck guys - I really hope ASUS or AMD helps you guys out very soon!! -

Having had to deal with this issue for a good few hours today, I thought I'd write in about how I fixed the problem on my particular machine. I went through Chastity's guide once to no avail. As a last resort before trying to reinstall windows (which I did NOT end up having to do), I tried simply uninstalling everything ATI, doing a driver-sweeper run in Safe mode, and finally reinstalling the provided driver from the ASUS support site. Specifically, I:
- Downloaded the driver provided on the ASUS website
- Used the provided Setup.exe file to do a CUSTOM uninstall of everything that appeared in the list
- Rebooted in safe mode and did an Analyze and clean with Driver Sweeper
- Rebooted into normal mode and ran the uninstall routine as per the second step, uninstalling anything that happened to be left once again
- Rebooted once again, then did a CUSTOM INstall of the ATI driver from the ASUS website using the same Setup.exe file as before, installing all the available components in that package
- Turned off Rainmeter and all of my gadgets, and turned on the default "High Performance" power profile and NOT the P4G one
- Did not do any overclocking using Catalyst Control Center (which should not be an option with the ASUS website version of the driver
- Opened up Op Flashpoint - Rising Dragon Demo (which had been giving me GSOD trouble, along with the Crysis demo) and was finally unable to get a GSOD
At some point during my struggle (not during the steps above, but before), my Windows profile appeared to reset - all of my Desktop icons and preferences were gone, and the My Documents folder was empty. I rebooted and all of my settings and files were replaced in their normal spots.
I hope this helps both Chastity in his (very comprehensive) guide as well as other people struggling with GSOD. This appeared to work for me on my G73 (a Best Buy model) and might (hopefully) work for you too.
Good luck, all! -
yeah but now you got the old 9.12 drivers from Asus. We want the 10.7 catalyst ones! haha.
The original drivers work for some with no BSOD.
Right now i am still stable with 10.7a overclocking my Gpu to 705/1100 or 755/1100 and leaving it at 300/300 when idling -
Hey, I just picked up this thing and I want to pwn some noobs, and I'm not going to wait around with my 5870 sitting idly by while ATI sort of works on a patch (maybe). Just my view.
-
Hi Humanshield, welcome to the forums.
It's well documented and accepted that 9.12 or 10.1 from ASUS will not cause GSOD on the G73JH. Some people need the newest drivers to run games such FF XIV and BFBC2 though. This is our issue. To have no GSOD's on the newer drivers so that we can play the games we bought our G73JH to play. -
-
What we want is for the newer drivers to work, becouse some games wont work on those old drivers and the performance increases/bugfixes/additions in the new drivers are also something you want to have. -
Just ran the FurMark stability test on 10.6 for 10 minutes. Temp peaked at 97.0 (was also the first time I've heard the fan kick in so hardcore
Was annoying though, because the fan would spool back down when the temps got to 93, then it would hit 95 again and spool back up, and just keep repeating... just stay on 100% T_T) and no issues so far. Don't want to run the GPU any harder than that. I'll keep using it like I have been and post if I come across a GSOD.
-
And judging from your edit "And im not even a gamer" that would explain why you havent had problems - if you dont game you shouldnt see an issue and should also be perfectly happy with the stock 9.12 or 10.1 drivers where you dont have to worry about any GSODs if you only work and watch movies or do occasional light gaming. But my question than is, why even get a gaming laptop? -
2. I do game. Just not as heavily as some folks here. World of Warcraft, Combat Arms, Crysis, DiRT 2, Tomb Raider: Legend, Underworld and Anniversary, Battlefield Heroes and Doom 3 are my current gaming titles. I beat HL2 on 10.6 as well as Portal and played some game that was in my Steam game list... like Gold and rust or whatever. Some crappy western game. Blegh. So I do game but I don't think it constitutes as heavy gaming (although in my glory days, I did 6+ hours a day in WoW /facepalm).
3. The G73 was a great value. I needed power for my Web Design and Development (And I don't have a good console. Still stuck with the PS2 and the Wii) and it was either this or a MacBook Pro. The MBP 13" was the only one in my price range (same price as my G73) and I could NOT work with a 13" screen with dinky internals all day. I considered a Vaio, but the closest thing to adequate was a $1300 Vaio. Considering the fact that this is packing some hardcore equipment, paying more for a Vaio and the same for a MBP didn't seem very logical, and considering the fact that I lack all of the issues other people have, it still is a good deal to me.
I may consider running FurMark for longer tomorrow. I think the fact that I have yet to receive a GSOD in ANY of the games I've played AND FurMark AND Unigine Tropics and Heaven (mind you, I played Combat Arms for 4 hours straight until the cable guy came over and fixed my laggy internet. That took close to an hour and I started playing again for another hour and a half. I'm about to start playing again until about 4 AM, I've got nothing to do tomorrow :3) is pretty significant. You say it's random but I've been using 10.6 for over a week of constant use and haven't seen so much as a whimper from my system (However, when I first installed 10.6 just after buying the computer, I did receive a GSOD after 2 minutes in ANY game, especially Combat Arms. Went back to stock and then 10.1). I never shut it down, only restart when I install a new program. I put it to sleep for the 9 hours I am in bed, wake it up when I do, and start the process all over again. -
.
-
I'm on 10.6 now.
I went from 10.1, to 10.2, to 10.3 (you get the picture) all the way to 10.6. I ran a few checks and everything seemed stable (and made a restore point), updated to 10.7, got a solid GSOD with no stripes. Restored back to 10.6, re-ran set up to be sure it was installed, and played for a few days. Today, I decided to uninstall the driver using the uninstall utility and uninstalling it in Windows. I let Windows install the generic driver, rebooted, immediately installed
10.1, then did the install process all over again. Still no problems. -
So you did get a GSOD. I dont think we have to say anything anymore.
I can confirm i tested every single GPU in the warehouse (11 GPUs in the service/distribution center for our country) with the tech here and every single one got a GSOD after some time in furmark (one ran 1 hour 20 minutes before giving up, some gave it almost instantly after running furmark). After that even the tech said its certainly the hardware and that ordering another GPU to replace it would be pointless.
I asked him if this is grounds enough to return my notebook and he said that it isnt, since the only official driver is 10.1 and thats what they install if you return the notebook and it will pass their tests and Asus wont care if later ones dont work, even if you cant run some games and software on the old ones or are suffering from various bugs those old drivers have. My only choice he said is either to sell it or wait for Asus to do anything which even he doubts will happen based on his expirience with them.
There you have it... Thats all you can get. -
Whell, I wrote my article about the G73 problems, it will be live on Sunday, 12:47 CET on LOGOUT.hu. I hope Chastity and Quag won't mind, I used some pictures that they made
I also hope that you don't mind HellCry for mentioning you (that you tested a lot of units and all of them were GSOD) -
Thats great DRevan. Anyone else with some connections with sources of influence going to continue this campaign?
