Just thought I'd put in my two cents. I had a total G73 failure (no boot or even to the BIOS stage) and Asus gave me an RMA, shipping label, and had it returned to me in about 8 working days. I don't know if they did anything to my boot drive, because I removed my Intel SSD before sending it and reinstalled it upon return.

Works great! Too bad it failed in the first place, but ... at least they fixed it.

Now, if only the keyboard didn't drop characters without uninstalling the synaptics driver.

Okay, now I'm a bit worried. It suddenly won't turn on. The LED's turn on and I can hear the fans start, then it just shuts off. The weird thing is is after it fails to turn on, it starts up again and tries again. Any help?

Try the bios reset tab on the bottom and see if anything changes I suppose.

Well, I left it unplugged for a while, and it (kinda) turns on now. It froze before it could fully boot up. I'll reset and see if it works.

Okay, I took the battery out and turned it on. It went on, off, and then booted, giving me two options. I chose 'Startup Repair.' That's currently in progress, we'll see how this goes. I can't tell you how pissed I am right now. After two RMA's the damn laptop won't even turn on.

Called Asus...she told me to system restore. I did. Almost nothing was backed up and I have no means of doing so. I am beyond pissed off. I mean... I didn't really have any work on there, but now I'll be spending my weekend reinstalling everything, getting Asus' shi-ware off my computer. I lost all of my save files, pictures, documents. Wow. Not sure if I'll ever buy an Asus product again.

    /rant

EDIT: Did I REALLY just post five times in a row?! Sorry. :S

EDIT2: GAH! Recovery just froze! What now??!!?!

Did the tech really write that the computer won't turn on, so run a system restore to fix it? That uh... seems like something they should have fixed before they sent it back to you.........

Indeed...Although...I did specify NOT to restore my OS, so I guess he wanted me to make the decision on whether or not I wanted files to be deleted.

Okay, It's 1:20 am and I'm going crazy. Everytime I try to recover, it freezes part way through the recovery, making me need to hold down the power button. Any help? :'(

Use a Win 7 Install disc and do a fresh install. You can download the Drivers and App disc if you need to.

I had this problem ... well, similar. My guess, is that they updated something using winflash and the flash failed (It resumed from hibernate when I got it back). So the computer continued to function until I restarted it.

Also, I've been requesting that asus do a system restore whenever I send it in for repair. That way, there is *NO* way that I can be blamed for causing problems with software. It's a hassle, but much better than having them return it un-fixed (which they've been doing anyways) AND blaming me for the problem.

I don't actually own a copy of Windows 7. I was relying on the fact that this computer came with it, and I was planning on just uninstalling all the crapware and move on with my life. How would I go about doing this?

Yeah, this is probably what happened. The main reason any of this is a problem is because I have no way of backing up my HDD, and this didn't have to happen.

Anyway, now that I'm no so tired and mad, here's exactly what's happening:

The laptop used to turn on, then off, on, off etc. Now I "f9'd" it, and everytime I boot up it takes me to Asus' recovery script, but it freezes every time I try to get through it. The one time I've made it through, it BSOD when Windows 7 was about to be installed.

So now I can turn it on, it just automatically takes me to a broken recovery process.

EDIT: By the way, I was able to turn the computer on and off without hassle out of the box. In fact, I made sure that I could do that. But it just....stopped. And no, I didn't do anything weird on it. I played a round of Left 4 Dead and checked Facebook.

I don't know what folks here think, but that sounds like bad RAM to me. I've had that happen with desktops before and it was a bad stick of memory.

The last time it happened, I could get almost all the way through installing Windows and then it would just freeze. The only way to get it going again was to power it off and back on again. As soon as the install or whatever tried to access that bad area of memory the computer would instantly freeze again.

I personally would download a Windows 7 Home Premium ISO and do a clean install before shipping the machine off again.

You DO own a license for Windows 7 since it came with the machine - the product key should be on a sticker...

I think I'll just send it in and let them revert to factory settings, or whatever they need to do. I'll try to backup the factory settings this time around.

And I just sent a long and heartfelt message to Gary. :p
Hopefully he'll be able to help.

Sent my RMA on the 21st of September. Waited a week and a half for a vga card to arrive. Package received in the 6th of October.

I sent it to ASUS Markham.

So far they have fixed my problem of spiked graphics and everything woks great.

Should I do a windows update? I read some have been having problems after updating.

It's boxed up and ready to go. :p

I'm too un-tech savvy to try anything myself. I've attempted what Asus has suggested about 10 times now, and each time it's frozen. If they fuc- up this time I think I'm going to kill someone. I just really hope Gary can help me out.

Again, I'm just mad about my Hard drive.

EDIT: Gary wouldn't happen to have a public email, would he?

how is the RMAs rules? in norway they say that if its not fixed 30 days u can demand for replacment or money back, but if it comes back bit before 30 days and its still has the problem, can is still ask for a replacement?
Asking this because it has happend with me :(

Real retards in this side of the ocean...
First they say that they cant fix it because its so new model, then i called to asus and asked whats gonna happen now. They told me to wait to wait does 30 days and then they will replace it, but now just few days before 30 days they are saing that its nothig wrong with the machine....i mean this is sick.
    .
    Edit:

And i was right, they just send it back to me like it was....really nice

May I ask what exactly is wrong with it?

And I'm happy, for once. It's been 1 week since I set up my RMA, and I'll have it back tomorrow morning. Mason said that they replaced my motherboard, replaced my hinge, and ran Furmark for over 24hrs and it never broke 83 degrees.

I'm glad that they've finally fixed my hinge problem (I hope.) Every time I've gotten it back they've "reassembled" it and I've had the same problem to some degree. But this time they've gone all out and replaced it, so I hope it will be working properly tomorrow.

I get slowdowns in fog and whatnot too. Especially if it's condensed, like a door opening or something. I assumed it was normal. I'll have to check on this the second I get my notebook back.

    alaric, hi.

I´d like to ask u a few things.

First, i´m sorry for my poor english, but i´m from Brazil and do not know how to speak fluently.

I just bought a G73JH in BB MIAMI. (Do not know how store warranty works)

Used it for just 10 days and one morning when i turned it on he wasnt working properly.

First the laptop tuned on but the screen not. Afiter reboot it for a few times, the screen turned on but the system was freezing in Asus screen.

Later that night i turned it on again and it was just OK.

Again, next morning the G73 had the same problems as the day b4.

Tryed to restore it to factory settings, but after the process was done the system was freezing in the windows loading screen.

After a few tryes the system crashed at all and even the factory restore process wasnt working. Computer was reebotting automatically.

After run a few tests i discovered everything was all right. Just couldnt test the processor and motherboard.

I think it has a motherboard or processor issue and i saw that in ur RMA they changed ur motherboard.

    But here is the thing.

I´m in Brazil, and ASUS dont RMA products in here so i have to figure out a way to send it back to US and RMA it. Still do not know how i´m gonna have the computer back since i dont know anyone in the US to receive back the RMA and post it back to me in Brazil.

Do u have any idea of what problem ur G73 had?

Do u know how if i coul send it to RMA directly form Brazil (tuff one to answer)?

Hey, sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on much lately.

Your problem sounds similar to the issue I had, and they did fix it for me. (Although I ended up with other problems in the long run, but that's beside the point.)

I don't know how RMA's are handled in Brazil, but I would contact Mason, at mason_winn[email protected].

He's been a huge help to me, and if anyone could set up with an American RMA it would be him. I would definitely recommend getting in contact with him, as it sounds like you'll require an RMA.

I RMA my G73JH on 1/7/2011 for usb ports that would suddenly stop working. I tried everything from a clean install and recovering back to factory settings. Nothing. I got word today 1/14/2011 its finished repairing and on its way back. I just hope it was repaired properly and it didn't cause any additional problems.

I've sent my 3D glasses for an RMA because they just didn't work out of the box. Took me like 2 weeks just for them to give me an RMA number. I ship it to asus via UPS and tracking shows it got deliver on the 9th. I been calling everyday since then and all I get is "we don't have anything on it yet, can you give us a call later?"

Well I got my G73JH back on the 1/18/2011 for intermittent usb functionality. The sheet that came back with it says they repaired with new components/parts and they replaced the motherboard. Well the problem is still presents. Seems like they never repaired it because my firefox browser still has the same bookmarks that I sent it in with. Wouldn't they have performed a clean windows 7 install after a new motherboard installation? Well I'm on the phone with a Asus trainee tech who tried to go through the whole troubleshooting booklet. I told him I have gone through this before with the previous Asus tech when I got the first RMA. So now I've been on the phone for 20 min waiting for a new RMA. I'm in RMA limbo.

Not necessarily, contrary to other claims here stating they always do it.

I went through the RMA process twice in a row and they never touched my system drive. I even gave them permission to wipe it (on the RMA problem form) and once they even emailed me asking for permission....still they didn't :)

Good luck in your RMA adventure!!

Wow. RMA limbo just became RMA hell. I just spent 55 mins with an Asus service trainee. I am pretty patient so I waited for him to fill out my RMA email and get me an RMA number. After 30 mins I get the RMA#, he then tells me that I am responsible for the shipping to them. I understand when I first sent it in for repairs that the shipping should be on me, but if I get it back with the same problem and I have to send it back to them to get repaired for a problem that should have been fixed the first time, it should be on them. He said that he couldn't do that. He goes into I understand your problem but I can not do that. Well then I said well it's time to speak to your supervisor. He goes okay hold on. So 10 mins go by and I read the RMA email and it says

"If the product is within warranty, ASUS provides free shipping for our customers. You will receive a FedEx shipping label by email. Please print out the label and take it along with your notebook to any FedEx Kinko’s Express location. Please be informed that this shipping privilege does not include shipping material."

Asus tech returns and says he's still looking for a supervisor. I tell him that the email he sent me says that Asus will pay for shipping if the product is within warranty. He pauses to read the email and says that he sent me the wrong email. That email is for customers who bought their laptop from other retailers besides best buy. What!! Well at that point I lost my patience and demanded for a supervisor. I told him that no where on the email does it say that if you bought your product from whereever you get free shipping and if you bought it from here you don't. So I'm on hold again. After the 55 minute mark the line goes dead and I hear a dial tone. So now I'm livid. I checked my email and I magically see an email with a prepaid Fedex label to Jeffersonville, IN. Well at least I don't have to call back yet.

Actually, he's kind of correct. However, bring it to a Best Buy, and the Geek Squad can ship it for you. I'd verify the RMA# is still active, and bring the RMA info with you.

For more warranty info, you can go here.

I had to RMA mine six weeks ago and finally was told that there was a shortage of LCD panels and they will get some more on the 30th. If anyone else sent theirs back for a LCD issue, don't expect it until at least another week or two.
