Starting to get a bit annoyed again. Fedex said that it arrived in Markham early Thursday morning, and according to Asus they still don't have it...

This exact same thing happened last time. I hope nothing else is repeated.

I hope that's what it is. And this time my tech had better be semi-competent.

Apparently they have the notebook now, they just haven't updated their site.

    So...good.

Maybe they did a BIOS update using winflash ;x. Doesn't that cause the backlight to stop working?

Yeah, this could be what happened.

For a company who makes computers, they're techs are starting to seem less and less professional.

I checked the bios version, it's 205 I can try to update it
I actually updated all my BIOSES before with winflash and never had a problem
edit: Updated to 211, still no lights but I don't care :p
won't RMA it again just because of the lights.

I don't think it's a BIOS/software problem, and I was not whining I was making an observation, when I am done gaming I may open it and see if the cable is well connected.

If that is the case, should only take you 1 minute. The light is the small orange connector. Check underneath to make sure the copper connectors are not damaged. Then re-insert.

    Good luck.

I already disassembled my notebook twice, once for changing the thermal paste and another to reconnect the headphones cable (the one that connects to the audio jacks) so I know how to do that.
it doesn't bother me for the moment/ AKA I am way to lazy to do it OR I haven't gamed for 2 weeks, let me DO IT MAN!

Apparently my Rma is in final testing. I hope it is fixed and everything comes back ok. I am hopeful because the tech sounded confident and sincere. Regarding the keyboard lights, if the wire doesn't fix it, there is a detailed thread on the subject.

You didn't speak with a tech. You spoke with someone who has a very limited list of what was done on your notebook. The rep I spoke to told me everything that was fixed, yet it came back worse than before.

However, I was probably a rare case, so good luck! :D

I'm getting REALLY pissed off. It has been 1 week to the hour since I RMA'd, and Asus is STILL denying ever getting it. Their site is giving me the message saying that they don't have records of my case. Okay, second time this has happened. Wonderful.

I also called and asked if when, if ever, my notebook gets through, if I could get updates on the repair, as I don't want it back if it's not repaired, thank you very much. But of course not! Maybe Gary will be able to sort something out, I don't know. But I don't see how Asus can get away with this kind of service. I'm calling again tonight. If they don't get their shi- together...

They don't update the website. Mine arrived, and is being worked on ... and it still says I havn't created an RMA.

In past RMAs (for the same machine), it'll sit at "Item not received" ... right up until it arrives at my door.

Well my status is now "ready for shipping". They replaced my mother board and that seemed to fix my no bootup problem. Then they ran furmark and got the same black screen so they were concerned the gpu was faulty also. They repasted the gpu an updated the bios (actually downgraded them according to Mason). Then they re-ran the tests. They said if it passes they would ship it back, otherwise they would replace the gpu (which is out of stock). Apparently it passed because I am now waiting for shipping. I hope passin was not a fluke , the hard part about the black screen of death is that appears randomly. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Overall I was very pleased with the communication by the California RMA facility.

Apparently you're right. I just called and it's been in repairs since the sixth. That's good, I guess.

I just really, really don't want them to send this back if it's not repaired. Is there any way I can be insured of this this time?

I want to stop them from sending it back if it's not fixed.

For the second time, this has not happened.

No way to guarantee they do it right. If you get a bad tech, all you can do is call in and complain and re-RMA it.

Generally it is fixed properly when you send in a tonne of documentation explaining what the problem is...

I'm checking my RMA out. So far so good. The hard drive partitioning is different (two partitions instead of one (not counting the recovery partition). I'm burning the restore DVDs now. Furmark and gaming will have to wait until Monday.

I had to RMA my first unit to NewEgg back in February. It worked for three days. They shipped me a replacement within a day or two of receiving it. However the unit I have has a problem with white noise blasting from the speakers after exiting a game... the only fix for that is a motherboard replacement. I also have keyboard lag and I'm pretty sure I didn't have that on the other one during the three days before the screen died.

You've heard that saying "The devil you know is always better than the devil you don't know". Think of it that way. :(

AGREED. getting a screen swap and taking extra time is worth it, if you already know the unit is in great shape otherwise.

Haha. I've gotten it back more than you, definitely. But it's been gone just as long as I've had to send it back. Frankly, I'm half expecting I'll need to go for a third.

Also, it seems online tracking is failing me. Asus never updated their site, and now Fedex has no records of my package. Wonderful.

This is killing me. Fedex doesn't do Sunday deliveries here, so I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see if my laptop is actually fixed this time.

I have this horrible feeling that I'll have to send it back a third time, though.

I think at this point I just want a new one.

So far so good on my laptop. I just played Crysis for an hour. 86C max temp. No crashes or anything. I am using the downgraded vBIOS Asus put on and the default Catalyst drivers. I cannot find anything wrong with the laptop so I must say they did a good job fixing my crash and no boot issues.

Did they put it back to a stock install before sending it back to you? Did you install Steam? You may be experiencing the Steam/Creative conflict if so. When mine was doing that it would freeze about 20 seconds after I got logged in.

It was longer than that, it simply stopped and I had to do a reset.

And yeah. My HDD contents and Windows preferences are still here, but I just noticed that Splendid/Twin Turbo aren't working. Does this mean that I'm at stock drivers now?

Oh, and it seems to be smoother now. I'm going to play a game and see if I still GSOD.

Mason updated me today. Just when I was about to call, I checked my e-mail and he wrote-

I just wanted to let you know that we do have the LCD screens in the US but they are being held by customs so all we can do right now is wait for customs to release them. It should be any day now. I'll keep you updated.

I really apologize for the inconvenience but hopefully we'll have them in a day or 2 and get it shipped back to you same day.

Whew. Hopefully customs will hurry up.

Glad to hear things are finally working out for you. :)

What exactly was wrong with your LCD?

Oh, and after some tests, everything seems to be working alright. Played through the new Left 4 Dead campaign without a GSOD or slow down. I also read what the tech wrote on my paper this time. Two things shocked me.

The first was that he ran Furmark on my machine for over 24 hours and it never exceeded 81 C. Wow.

The second was that apparently it won't turn on, even when power is supplied to the unit. Didn't really understand that one, but he said to reload my OS. Not sure what I'll do about that, everything seems to be working fine for me. Now all I have to do is get around to updating my drivers. I'm going to get killed for this, but I've NEVER done that before on any machine. I guess now's as good a time as any to learn.

No-one seems to know what to call what my screen had. It wasn't a stuck pixel or dead pixel or a bright dot. It looked like an area of white light shining through, almost holographic looking. Brightest point was maybe 4 pixels in area with an ambient area around it that was also glowing.

I have the exact same sorta issue growing in the corner of my what, 5 year old Gateway monitor. It is a series of random sized dots that are whiter and sorta holographic looking. Not a huge issue but I know its only a matter of time before it grows worse to the point of replacement time.

I had read somewhere that they can turn into permanent white lines on the screen, which was my main cause of concern was if it is going to get worse over time.

Interesting. Was this spot visible even on white screens?

And I've asked this before, but is screen bleeding on this notebook normal? Whenever I'm looking at a dark screen, there's kind of a faint line of white/brown along the edges. And it doesn't fade in, either. It's a solid, but faint line on the right and left. Nothing on the top or bottom. Even weirder, is the bottom right of my screen has a VERY faint patch which is just slightly brighter than the rest, only visible on a totally black screen. Hm..

The thing my screen had was more visible the lighter the color. I think it was still visible with white, but not with black.
