Wow..I've had my g73 for 6 months now and have not sprayed my vents yet because my cpu idle temps were still around 60c, but after I sprayed the vents thoroughly I'm idling at around 45c.
If you have not dusted off your vents in awhile... do it! -
hey guys, somebody mentioned a vacuum cleaner can be used near vents to take out dust particles... is it safe? as i dont have THe can, i want to use vacuum cleaner...
If the carpet vacuum cleaner is safe, I will use that.. Thanks alot.. -
Yeah, You are pulling the air through the vents in the back of the machine.
I use one and it works fine. -
Note that I use the can to blow on one end and simply hold the vacuum near the exit. I don't touch the pc with it.
It just makes sure that the airborn dust doesn't resettle somewhere else in the PC. I don't use the vacuum alone. -
I've had my G73 for about 5-6 months without any problems, purring like a kitten, playing graphically intensive games the way they should be played.
And slowly I would notice my G73 would overheat well past 100C to 110C and just shut down nearly 10 minutes in a game.
I did research across the web and read about how people are "repasting" their thermal sinks and what not, and thought I would have to just send it back to Best Buy where I bought it.
I tried new drivers and BIOS to fix the overheating but those didn't work out at all, and before I was going to send it back for repairs, I bought a little can of air duster since dust DOES cause a lot of heat.
An INCREDIBLE amount of dust came out of my two back vents, it was filthy...from only a few months of use! but I started my PC back up and my overheating issue is gone! The system runs 10C-15C cooler at any given time than before I dusted the vents.
Even though my laptop is probably still running higher than it should at idle... around 68C-70C, it's a HECK of a lot better than the 80C-85C idles and auto-shutdown temps.
Just thought I'd share! Probably going to go on other online forums so others can give it a shot and see if anyone else can resolve their heating issue this way. -
Any brand of the "cans" should work? Are there any brands that can damage the parts? (examples of good brands would be nice)

This is unbelievable. I recently started idling at around 65-67 degrees and reaching over 90 during heavy gaming. After using an aircan, a giant puff of dust came out of both vents. My idle temps are now in the 40 for both CPU and GPU and will not go over 73. Absolutely amazing. I was sure I needed a repaste.
-
I took my g73 outside, and then sprayed some air can into the back vents. It was kind of dark, but I dont' think I saw dust come out, unless I missed some really fine dust. There definitely weren't any clumps. I'm hoping that there aren't just big clumps of dust in there that it only moved around.

Edit: Oh and mid 80's under load...Attached Files:

Man, what a big difference this can make; my idle temp was around 64 to 68 degrees C. after about 8 months of use, and tonight I just turned the laptop around and sprayed out the air vents from the outside (figured I'd take the keyboard off and do it from the inside later when I had more time).
Sure enough, quite a bit of dust sprayed out of the vents and now I'm idling at 51 degrees C. I also noticed the fan isn't running at low speeds as much anymore, since the GPU is cooler.
I can't believe a 10- to 12-degree difference can be gained by just spraying out the dust from the outside of the vents, but then again, I smoke -- so I'm sure I've been subjecting my intake to a lot more particulate than usual. Still though; what a difference! -
I've had my g73 since september 2010 and the temps have creeped up but today i used some compressed air and now they have gone from 62c gpu idle to 48c and cpu has gone from 55c idle to 47c. Not tested on load yet.

@CrappyAlloy where i can find that gadget you have with temperature for ati radeon 5800??
-
GPU Observer Gadget
Nice little utility.
GPU Observer Gadget | Windows 7 Gadgets -
@WarWyrm001 thx for the info but this little gadget shows 3c less (56c) than GPU-Z(59c) dont know which program to trust!
-
The 5870m has four different temperature readings: Gpu diode, memory I/0, shader I/O and display I/O. Gpu observer only shows one of these but Gpu-z should display all of them.
I use GPUz more often but Gpu Observer is still useful for convenient display of clockspeed and VID.
GPU Observer was the first utility,I believe, to include the ability to monitor GPU VID for the 5870m. The latest version of GPUz now has the VID as well.
Another good one is HWInfo32.
Edit: you should pay the most attention to the sensor temp reading that is hightest. For most people this is mem IO.
Other than that just use whatever program you like the best but try all the of them first. -
thx again!! got the point now!!
-
take an air pump, point it at the vents in the back and start pumping!! Dust HOH!!! and listen to the sound of that engine when its blown
though Its fun using an air can cause it gets really really really really really cold.
compressed air ftw http://www.amazon.com/Stoner-94203-...KIUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297228354&sr=8-1 -
Got my can and hosed it.
Wasn't as much clumpy dust as I was hoping, but streams of dust/sandy particles came out. Streams of sandy/dust that shot straight into my face lolol.
Temps are now down by 13C.
It really is as they said it was, as counter-intuitive as it sounds spraying into the back of the vents. Sure worked. -
My temps have been creeping up recently, so I decided to give the compressed air treatment a try.
Not sure how much of the dust went inside (a fair amount streamed out), but the GPU idle temp dropped 20C!I owe ya one OP
-
^^ WOW, i ordered the rocket air pump, i will try that and hopefully it will work!
-
-
where are these air cans at? I tried walmart and the best they have are for tires and I think those wont work out very well
-
edit - if u want to try a store, try best buy or targets. -
sweet thx Xellon

My wife's laptop started to shut off during games (even WoW!) and I was fully prepared to take it to a local shop and get the CPU/GPU repasted. On a whim, I grabbed a can of air and went to town. So far, so good!
On top of taking off hard drive and memory covers, I also kept a vacuum hose attachment in the vicinity where I sprayed. This helped to catch those nasty dust bunnies as they took flight.
EDIT - To clarify, my wife's laptop is an HP HDX (not an Asus). -
I am not having any problems yet...but im going too try this later today...so my understanding is use a can of air and spray it INTO the back vents?...while off ofcourse...
.....and is it a good idea too remove the bottom cover while I do this?...thx to any replies
-
Please, someone make a video of it! I still don't get how these Air Cans work (it's hard to find it in my country).
And why we can't just use a vacuum cleaner? It makes more sense to me. -

Also, I'm boosting your page rank, and thus the likelyhood of people being able to find it. -
Any more results with this? Also, Josh22, I assume after you took that video your idle and load temps went down?
Holy crap!!!!!!
I just did it and my idle temps are down to 53-53c (they were at 65-70c) and my load temps are locked at ~81c (they were hitting 100c+ before I stopped the application) -
Yeah, mind blowing.

Happiness isn't a crime.
But then again, neither is eyesthatrolledsohardtheyarenowinthebackofmyhead sarcasm. -
I wouldn't call his comment sarcasm. More like a pun.
-
I was going for a pun, but couldn't make it happen. So I stuck with sarcasm, the easiest emotion to convey online. Often, people will feel it even if you don't mean it!
Anyways, yeah. The dust-fix is pretty amazing, if you've got pets, smoke or lots of dust ... it's a huge difference.
Actually, I was going for a pun. I'm just trying to save face by pretending that I did sarcasm on purpose. -
All I have to say is why would you not take the laptop outside and clean it ? Like I do so your not sucking up the same dust again?
-
Just dropped to say thanks to everyone for the discussion and to JOSH for putting up a video on Youtube..It was of great help..
My idle temps were 60 degrees for both CPU and GPU and on load 93 deg on the GPU..
After a bit of canned air treatment following JOSH's guide..
idle temps on
CPU : 46
GPU: 48
Load
GPU was 78 after 30 mins of DiRT 2.. -
Im not sure whether is it safe to air can my laptop or not.
I tried on my old M1530. It does seem very effective, as there are even one pea sized dust flew out the heat sink with tonnes of small ones, but the fan completely fails to even spin a bit after i blew it. The temps are still terrible as the fan has failed.
I did discharge it, by pressing the power button and removed the battery to avoid any electrostatic.
I just want to know, does anyone's G73 fan had problems after air can the laptop?
My idle temp is about 58 now with 93 on DiRT 3. I just hope it didnt ruin my G73 fans after blowing it. -
Air cans did not work at all.
I have to repaste soon. -
I use spray can once a week to prevent dust build up.I buy one can each months.I blow air into vents, than I open bottom cover and blow air inside.
I use aircans to clean laptops since I get my first laptop 4 years ago and never had any problems. -
All I have to say is, thank you for this thread.
My machine was idling at 80C and now is at 50C.
It was shutting down during Civ 5 and Batman AC and I thought, "damn, well I will check out the NBR forums for an answer." -
dude, holy smokes. i can't believe it.
used the canned air on the vents, was caught off guard and accidentally inhaled a boatload of dust.
temps dropped from 62c idle to 48c idle. -

While compressed air is good at lowering the G73JH's temps, blowing directly on the vents and not completely dismantling the beast for thorough cleaning, will just displace the dust all over your mobo and might also reach the lens of your optical disc if you didn't pull it out.
Get out the Air Cans!
