I have the bestbuy version and am getting some artifacts with ATI tool, is it best to down the clock 5-10mhz or voltage?

Also would take the plastic disk out of the bottom that covers the fan slot be a good idea?

DO NOT take plastic disc out of the bottom. It was made for another design of laptop and if you take it out then vital components do not get cooled! As for having the best buy version those tend to have the lesser quality parts in them and if you are getting artifacts try putting the voltage back to normal and getting an over clock on just that. It will be lower, but it will still be something. Some people just can't hit these speeds with their cards and thats the way it is :(

Tavara I tried, bumping up my voltage and trying out your clocks and I can't even get close....

It's not so much for cooling the CPU and GPU as for directing airflow over the RAM, HDDs and northbridge. Imho, CPU and GPU temps would likely drop a couple of degrees if the vent was uncovered, but then the RAM and HDD temps might get a little too warm.

So I was playing L4D last night and I have never gotten over 93C on my card before on any of my games and for some reason it got over 100C and crashed my comp. I don't have a laptop cooler and it just went from relatively nice weather to ridiculously hot here so I am guessing if its going to be a hot summer you'll need a laptop cooler for this flash. As for now I flashed back to GS speeds because I don't have the time or the want to deal with it.

Same here, my bedroom absorbs a lot of heat during the spring/summer (It is over a garage and thus is extra-insulated for winter purposes), and I started suffering a small amount of instability.

Gonna pick up a cooler, but running stock clocks until then. Just gotta deal with sub-par FPS on Warhead CCC Lvl 4 until then.

Well, I live in México, and in my area we have usually between 90 and 100F temperatures (32-39C). The hottest my GPU has gone is 93C as far as I remember, and only with Demigod, most games are around 89C.

And I have the G50vt from best buy and have had no problems with flashing or anything. All g50vt have the exact same mobo and GPU. There are hardly "cheaper" parts in the unit except for the lower res screen.

i must be the first one with a bad flash :(

today i figure i give it a try and first i couldint get the usb pen drive booting with the asus it works with my other comuter but will not boot on this laptop.

so i just use a ubcd to get to dos and went to the flsah drive which the drive letter was c:\ for it.

so i put in nvflash newbios.rom and it says everything was ok than i hit y and than it did it thing than it says something about buffer with blue line on the botton... and before i restarted it i look on th enet about and than i know i was in trouble....

so i left it sit more and still nothing so i rstarted it and well blank screen :(

i could hear the asus gaming sound and it did boot to windows but no screen.

and i cant get my flash usb drive to work....

i also tried a cd boot disk and try to do it blind at first it looks like its booting but the light went off on the cd...

than the laptop seems like it frozed....

also everytime i turn the system on i have to push f2 to get a light on the cd drive to blink if not it would just keep looping the asus sound every min.

    so am i screwed?

maybe if i could get a cd with nvflash bootble i could blind flash it but i cant find a bootable cd with nvflash on it :(

oh does anyone know the boot menu button at start up like so i could pick which one i could boot from? maybee that would work with my usb flash drive if i pick it from there hopefully :(

oh and can someone post how the boot things are in order?

    like cd rom

    removeable

    and hdd?

nevermind i got the blind flash to work and now siting with gts speeds :)

just incase someone has ths troube that i had

when your asus just makes a sound at boot up but no screen push f2 than push esc and f8 for a boot menu which i had to use push down the arrow keys 3 times or mightve been 3 times to pick the usb drive.

and do the commands for the flash blindy from th first page :)

really i dont know how i got it working because at first the usb flash drive or even my boot cd wasint booting and i didint know if this laptop had a boot menu and i didint even know the keys for it but i search on the net for boot menu for asus and tried thoses and it work :)

tho i didint find no info for f2 key which i had to push after the sound if not the asus sound and the system will keep looping.

usely thats to get in the bios but i guess when you have no bios on the card its diffrent.

i still dont know why it went wrong the first time because i did all the commands right and im not a noob because i did this alot of times on my dell 9300 with the 7800gtx.

but maybe its how i did the boot?

i use ubcd because i couldint get my flash drive to boot on this system the first time and than boot to free dos and went to my usb drive letter and did the nvflash newbios.rom and it was going threw all the steps right to till after it was creating the bios it said that end buffer and it was dead after boot up

but now that i got the usb flash drive working it seems to work because thats what i use to blind flash it with.

but everything is ok now :) so far i tested crysis and test drive unlimted and temp was around 88 to 91 but didint go higher and i didint see no graphics glicthing :)

downloading 3dmark 06 right now to make sure :)

i got the gt50vt-5 got it from bestbuy.

just re did the flash back to stock to see what it gets in 3dmark 06 and i got a 8037 stock

and i scored a 8676 flashed to gts so it did go higher than aint that little low? or is that about right?

also my res on 3dmark 06 is 1280x1024

when it was at 1280x768 and it scored a 9100 something

but dont know how to go back to that res because i got the free verison of 06 not sure why it changed.

i tested again with 1280x728 which comes back when i use the laptop lcd. if i use my external it goes to 1280x1024

i also did a fully driver clean and now my score is 9427 with 1280x768 much better than 9100 :) it problee be close to 9k with 1024 res.

I have the same laptop from best buy and with the console overclocking the cpu to 2.3 and a bios flash to gts speeds I get 9617 in 3dmark06 and with gs speeds I get 9110...Without the cpu overclock on gs speeds I get 9030....I use dox 185.68 driver

95 processes is quite high. I have 71 processes, and that's with: 7 processes of Chrome, Direct Console, Power4Gear, Norton, Daemon Tools, and a bandwidth tracker all running.

@Exo: You should try the new 185.81 beta drivers, I can run GTS speeds in the heat now.

well i read the new drivers should give less fps but better gfx ?

if not i will try to get the new drivers and overclock with them.

i normally never go higher than 83degrees (with 26degrees in my room). still i cannot reach the gts speed.. 570-1450-800.. and still some glitches/flickering sometimes.

okay now i cant even run the 3dmark06 test anymore without error.. lol dont know why.. i ran the 3dmark test like 8 times in a row without problems..

will try the dox 185.68 driver..

    @edit:
got more fps at the test.. still crashing after 2nd test.. dont ing get it.. rly.. i ran that test before 100times and it worked.. seems like i cannot even overclock my 9800m gs at all .. for sake -.-

Uninstall that piece of and install the free version of AVG. Norton is a resource hog.

It's Norton 2009, possibly one of the best AVs available now. It uses virtually no resources.

For people who have flashed their gpu from GS to GTS.

    1. is the an improvement in gaming?
    2. can you overclock more after flashing?

their is a good improvement on gaming. Its well worth it since the 9800m gs is just shy from playing all games to their full setting...Once on gts thats all in the past...besides crysis obviously lol

It really pulled up all my games to a smooth level on High which is exactly what I was looking for. The only thing to now if you have some hot ambient temperatures its going to be a problem. I am living in Israel for the time being (I'll be back in Canada soon) and during the winter here (you can hardly call it a winter its more like my Canadian spring, haha) my OC ran perfectly without a single problem, but now since it is spring here and the ambient temps in my house have risen, oh say about, 20C! After a hour of gaming y laptop can no longer keep my GPU at stable temps because the air is so damned hot here so it crashes at well over 100C!

What I'm trying to say is that if you have good ambient temps or a laptop cooler you will have no problem. I flashed my gpu back down to GS as I am going travelling soon and have no time for a laptop cooler and after that I'll be back in good, cool, beautiful Canada and I'll flash it back up!

I had it running for several months with the flash with no problems!

BTW motok I'm sorry, but I have to point out you used "their" and that is possessive while the correct spelling of the word for your purposes is "there". Its a very common mistake on the internet and it drives me CrAzY!

    Examples:

There is that crazy that can't spell on NBR! :)

Their laptop is complete crap and they should upgrade it!

Having issues getting this to work. For some reason, my g50vt-x5 doesn't like my usb pen and won't boot from it. I followed all the steps, using the hp utility to make it a bootable device, put nvflash and the bios on there, but it refuses to recognize it as a legitimate boot device. Any ideas?

I had no issues myself using a SanDisk flash drive. You did provide the HP Utility with the msdos startup files and click the box to make it a msdos system disk (whatever it says)?

Without that it wont work, the page that has the HP Utility has the windows 98 startup disk files you need.

Yeah, I downloaded the files from the thread linked by the op, and pointed the hp utility at it after asking it to make a dos bootable drive. Using a transcend 2gb usb drive.

EDIT - Scratch that the HP tool doesnt work on flash cards.

Hmmmm not sure what to tell you lol. I always buy sandisk, any kind of hardware hacking there products always work best and on sale they get as cheap as the cheap stuff but do tend to be a little more expensive otherwise.

did you try to push esc at boot up to get to the boot menu than pick the usb stick?

because my x-5 wont boot from the usb stick if i dont select it from the boot menu.

sticks that i tried and didint auto boot unless i select it from the boot menu.

    a old silicon power 1gb

    ocz atv 4gb

and my new sandisk cruzer 8gb

they work when i use the boot menu

Thanks a ton, that worked like a charm. Also turns out the hp utility didn't quite work right, because I reformatted my usb drive again and it took about 10 times longer to do it.

Should the video card be showing up as 9800gts now in device manager and everything?

Use ati tool to scan for artifacts to truly test it out. Guide recommends running 3dmark06 3 times thats fine as ati tool probably isnt a good shader test.

Yea it wasn't easy at first because I couldn't get the computer to boot from USB, but thanks to you mentioning that it could be done by pressing Esc I got the hang of it.

Hers what I did step-by-step in case some people are still lost:

    1. Unistall your old driver, restart, press F8 on ASUS splash screen and boot Windows in Safe Mode, use Driver Swiper to clean the Nvidia content, restart, instal the DOX drivers
    2. Download HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool
    3. Download Windows 98 system files
    4. Once installed use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool select your USB Device, check-mark "Create a DOS startup disk" and under "Using DOS system files located at:" click on the box with "...", locate the previously saved Windows 98 system files which were extracted into a folder
    5. Hit Start and let the application do its job (it should take around 10min or less)
    6. Once that's done download Nvflash and extract the content into the USB Key (root folder)
    7. Save the two provided ROM's called NEWBIOS.ROM and OLDBIOS.ROM into the key (root folder)
    8. Restart the computer
    9. On ASUS splash screen press Esc, select USB as bootable device (sometimes you may need to repeat the process until it boots through the USB)
    10. You should see a Windows 98 dos splash screen then the prompt
    11. Type
    12. It will ask you to press "Y" to proceed
    13. If all is done right it will say the flash was sucessful so you press Ctrl + Alt + Del and the computer will restart
    14. Done :)

I think it was the pressing esc to access boot devices that messed a lot of people up. I was having issues because I would set the usb drive as first boot priority in the bios, and it wouldn't read it as bootable for some reason.

Thanks cheeseman for the concise step by step guide!

Several hours of GRID and max temp was 85 Celcius.

Ambient was 20 Celcius (cool) and I have Direct Console OC'ing off.

G50Vt-X1 (stock except for these new GPU clocks).

Process works smoothly (remember to eject and SD cards because it confuses the HP Disk Utility.

not that i care since it hasnt caused any problems. just thought it was funny

Very Easy to do. Did it on my x-5 with no problems. Gets about 83-87C Max while playing GTAIV. Scored about 9K 3dmark06 on Win7(stock cpu). Will eventually do AS5 and new cpu along the line. Thanks for the write up :)

Is it possible to undervolt the 9800M GS slightly then overclock it to 600mhz core?
