ok after completing flash , how do u power down? DO u just power button or type some command? Sorry i've nver done this.
-
IF i get it... and thats going to be hard to accomplish... otherwise ill just be stuck using my desktop until i get a working replacement JH which isnt a problem now that ive finally moved it to my study apartment
.
-
Just press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
-
just one last thing.. will there be a command or something when flash is completed?
-
When the flash is complete, it will tell you to reboot.
-
ok doing it now.. good luck to me
-
Dont worry, you have to be real unlucky for it to fail. Ive reflashed the bios and vBios at least 20 times each on this laptop and its still working.
-
I thought the instructions say to the boot section of the bios? Where it gives you two options, they say ST9500420AS and MATABD-CMB, which I'm guessing is the hard drive and bluray player? When I go to the save and exit, it says P0 st9500420as, P4 st9500420as, 0.00, P1 MATABD-CMB. I'm not sure which to pick
I'm not tech savvy, and I've never had to do anything like this before.
-
i've got same dilema.. i don't have boot from USB.. only got the SSD+HDD+ ODD..
-
Thats why i already told people to use instructions in the post i linked previously.
HERE again.
Keep pressing ESC frantically at boot instead of going into bios. A menu will pop up and you will have the option to choose the USB drive. I also couldnt get the USB key set up as a boot device in bios so the ESC method is the only one i ever use and its much easyer and you dont have to change settings again after flashing. -
Thanks Hell Cry! Worked perfectly and was easy.. just forgot to put spaces in front of each word first time.. even spelt rom and ron i think.. thanks a lot. no GSOD's for me for sure now
-
I get a spike about every 30-60 seconds with the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter enabled. Is it from this card in particular or wireless connections in general?
-
I did it your way Hell cry, is it supposed to say "Flash already programmed" when it's done?
-
It didn't work, I got a GSOD 5 minutes into playing FFXIV...
-
Do you have the latest drivers from windows update installed for this card?
-
Also for those wondering where the USB Drive is in your ESC Boot Selection. Mine appeared as 0.00 or something. Was kinda odd but hey, it was the only thing Plugged in and everything else was labeled so ya. Just incase anyone else was wondering where it is.
-
Did you try to reflash the stock vbios or something? Make sure you've downloaded the v93 vbios (when you extract it the folder says v93), it sounds like you didn't flash anything,
-
Thank you so much!!!!. it took me only 20 min and it was very easy for me to go from 205 to 211 and then very easy to flash my vbios. this forum is very helpful and i will post here in a few more days or weeks to announce if i had not had once GSOD. I was getting them roughly twice a day and i do alot of gaming. !!!! Thanks a ton again, mad props to OP
-
No, its supposed to tell you flashing is done or successful or something like that and to reboot your laptop (use ctr+alt+delete)... did you download the pack i uploaded and used atiflash -p 0 beta.rom?

Are you on BIOS 211? Didn't they also do something to the WLAN adaptor settings in BIOS 211? -
Playing SC2 about 2 hours today and just got gsod with all the new bios and drivers. Hopefully just an anomaly. If not where can I get 10.7a?
Cheers, -
I got a GSOD in DDO today... with me its no longer an anomaly with 3 GSODs in 2 different games
.

I started a thread with my observations with modding the vBios Gary released.
I also uploaded the current modded vBios I'm using.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu.../517491-observations-official-beta-vbios.html -
Didn't I see you already dropped back to 10.7a?
I'm somewhat concerned in that I was running fine with bios 209, orig vbios and that slight overclock for stability. That overclock does not prevent gsod with these newer drivers and vbios. I dropped back to std clocks 700/1000 and played anther 90 minutes w/o incident. Time will tell but I'm not as confident as I was.
Cheers, -
Just an additional warning, i uploaded a moded vBios like this (that i used) with very similar settings some time ago and two people reported having a lot of trouble with it (artifacts, crashes, flickering) so i removed it as a precaution. Keep in mind that GPUs are not made identical, so Ziddys and mine are probably one of the more tolerant ones when it comes to downclocking.
*Ziddy im not writing this to provoke you, just making sure people dont go flashing without being aware of what theyre doing. -
Yes im on 10.7a right now. And did a fresh reinstall of them too yesterday after the 2nd GSOD again to be sure it wasnt the drivers.

I'm having an unusual problem with the catalyst 10.8 drivers, and I'm wondering if the vBios could be the cause. Here's the situation:
I previously used the 10.1 drivers, because I didn't GSOD on them. Then, I heard about this vBios fix, so I updated my Bios and vBios, which went by without a hitch. Then I installed the 10.8 drivers over my previous driver, without running driver sweeper or anything. Everything seemed to work fine, except I noticed my driver version in CCC was displayed as 10.7 (I've never had that version installed), so I decided to reinstall my drivers, this time running driver sweeper in safe mode, following the proper procedures I've seen posted here, etc.
Now, the problem: When I try to install the 10.8 software suite, there's no option in the catalyst install manager for the driver, or for CCC. I don't get any error messages, it just doesn't give me the option to install them. I've tried different downloads, trying to install the driver package and CCC package separately, deleting ATI registry entries and all traces of ATI I could find from my system, but nothing works. Could the different vBios be stopping the install manager from recognizing my card? I'm honestly at my wits end here trying to find out what's screwing it up.
I've managed to install the drivers through windows, but I'm not 100% sure it installed them correctly, and I still don't have CCC. Has anyone run in to this kind of problem before?
Oh yeah, I've also tried previous versions, all that stuff. 10.1 drivers, 10.7, 10.6, all of them have the same problem since they use the same install manager. Curiously, only the drivers on ASUS' website will install properly. -
This issue happened to me one time...
You can try this (it worked in my g73) : go to Device Manager---> Screen Adapters---> Ati mobility radeon 5800... ---> right clic-->uninstall--->reset--->install 10.8 -
Yes I've been using the drivers from windows update and also tried a 9.0.0.173 version.
-
Yes I'm on bios 211.
-
No dice. The option to install the driver or CCC still didn't show up. It's like my G73 is haunted by ex-drivers or something.
-
I think this has already been mentioned, but for those using new vbios and experiencing stutterring-run your gpu monitor in the background and see if the core clock is staying at 700 or dropping down to 405.
I was playing Final Fantasy 11 and the core was constantly jumping between 405-700. This probably only applies to older games that don't cause much load on the gpu. After turning off powerplay in CCC, ff11 is running smooth. -
I also get a black screen for about 2-3 seconds sometimes when i open CCC.
Also i have noticed a decrease in performance ( not to much ) but i get no GSOD
, this is with bios 211 new Vbios and 10.8 drivers.
One thing that i do not like is i can not overclock nearly as high as i used to and still be stable which sucks becuase im playing Final Fantasy 14 and the boost really helps -
ya id imagine because FF 11 can run on a 10 year old comp lol
great game btw been playing for years
-
Run the AMD installer and uninstall. Reboot into safe mode. Run Driver Sweeper followed by CCleaner's reg sweep. Reboot and install 10.8
If you still have issues, try again, but use 10.7a Hotfix.
Alternately, you can try 10.8b Hotfix. -
the game i noticed that has been hit the hardest is SC2, i used to play with all settings on/highest and it ran smooth as can be, but now it stutters alot.
also i have a question for other SC2 players, when you go into the options menu and for graphics you click on idividual options at the bottom in yellow letters it tells you " Recomemded for your machine " alot of these are telling me low.... i find that hard to belive since SC2 is not all that demanding can anyone check this please and let me know what it says for you ? ? ?
id like to know if my laptop is messed up somehow -
also i have another question when using the AMD overclock tool, which number do i raise for better game performance such as FPS ? or do i raise both ?
until now i have been raising both maybe if i just try one it will be more stable for me thanks -
That's the procedure I've been using. I just tried it again, following your directions, and still no results. By AMD installer, do you mean anything specific or just the uninstaller that comes with the install manager?
The 10.8b and 10.7a driver installers have the same issue. I think the installer might not be recognizing my video card or drivers or something? I have no idea why ATI would release an installer that does this, unless it thinks the drivers are incompatible or something (they aren't). -
stupid question but... are you downloading mobile catalist?
-
Yup, the installer i'm using is "10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc".

I've been following the instructions to the letter, but for some strange reason my flash drive won't boot properly.
From what I understand of the instructions, it should just show up in the BIOS as a boot option, correct? Meaning that I do not have to create it as a boot option. But it won't show up at all by itself. I can create it as a boot option, and assign it as priority, but when I reboot the notebook all that happens is POST, and then the flashing underscore. Nothing else at all. Nothing at all happens when letter are typed in.
The machine works fine, it just won't boot off the USB. And I think I have created the bootable USB properly. -
As it has been said, restart from your laptop then mash the esc button to bring up the boot menu, then select your flash drive instead of going into bios. -
Thanks man. I haven't read through the thread.
-
We really need Gary to update his original post with the instructions on how to boot from the USB. This thread is filled with 40+ pages of people asking even though it has been answered for over 40+ pages . Common behavior of lazy people is to only read the original post, run into trouble, then skip the other 9k posts and post a new question.
-
So what if I'm lazy? Any problem?
-
Well, I'm just downright confused now. I've GSODed on 800/1100 (used to work, didn't up until a week ago, flashed BIOS and vBios, updated CCC afterward), and 750/1100, and everytime I reboot PowerPlay reenables itself, even though I turn it off. I'm gonna try 700/1000 for a while, and if I get a GSOD again, I'm probably going to sell the laptop...
-
just got the g73 and have no games yet, anyone know any free SAFE game demos i can download to test if i have the gsod problems, or if there is any other way to see if i have the problem?
-
just updated my G73 to gary's vbios and bios 211 and driver 10.8... everything is stable so far..games i play are starcraft 2, bad company 2 and assassins creed 2.. no stuttering/flickering that i can notice...
use to run bios 209 and i get GSOD on 10.6,10.7 and 10.8. so i stayed using 10.1. sadly though my temps are still peaking at 97 degrees. funny thing is i dont crash or anything (may be related that my g73 is still less than a month old). i see a repaste in my future..
i gotta say theres a mighty huge difference between 10.1 and 10.8 gamewise. again thanks to the NBR asus community and GARY KEY for making this fix/update a success. -
Sadly, I got my first GSOD. Was different than other time. This time I was playing Test Drive Unlimited (1080p, 2x AA, Highest settings), and for a moment the screen went grey with white stripes. The GSOD last 1 sec and the game return to normal. Neither the game nor the laptop freeze, just went to grey and then went back to playgame (the game continue in background). The game continue as normal with just a minor graphical glitchs. Early this day, I was playing the same game with same setting and 4xAA and every was smooth (no GSOD). I just report this incident to keep asus/gary informed. For the rest of the games: SC2, MW2, NFS Shift, the system runs smooth and graphical issues-free. My specs are in my signature, and I run my system with 10.7a since I was not convinced of the performance of 10.8 (and because of the report of others here in the forum).
