Hey everyone. So here it is.

I guess im one of the lucky few that NEVER had a gsod with any driver. So, is it worth it for me to upgrade anyway? What did it fix exactly?

Can anyone still download the 93vBIOSa.rar from the link in the original post? It looks like the link is dead?

I'd guess that it's probably worth upgrading anyway. We don't know exactly, but I'd guess some setting to do with memory timing.

Yes it definitely does worth it.
Maybe its just because the BIOS 211, but overall in some games I get -5C on dispIO and memIO.
Right now I idle while surfing the net on 52/61/55C, but with BIOS 209 and the previous vBIOS I was idleing at around 60C dispIO. Powerplay is nice.

i've downloaded 3 times and same result for the 3 download ... is there a risk ?

    I updated to bios 211 from 209. - Success
I updated to the newest vbios - Success

I'm unable to install the Catalyst 10.8. After I go through the procedures of downloading it I:

    1. Launch the 10-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe
    2. Extract it
    3. Hit "Install"

Afterward I get an error "CATALYST Install Manager has stopped working" I can't get past this step. I'm upgrading from stock Catalyst drivers.

Is there a way to set uvd to downclock only in battery mode?

I have the clocks set to 200/500 in battery mode only because I'm not too concerned with power management when plugged in. Uvd is set to 200/500 as well but this also drops it down to those clocks even when plugged in so I'm getting the screen flicker everytime I watch a video while plugged in as well.

There is no way to do that. There is only 1 clock info available for UVD and its both for AC and battery.

Tried to get the vBios installed, no luck yet.
Some strange way my laptop does not want boot from my SanDisk U3 Cruser Micro 4GB. Tried defining it as Boot device, let it be detected by bios (UFIU option in boot, or whatever its called). But no boot. HP Boot disk worked fine, see the hidden DOS files on the USB stick.

As I have no other USB stick I will get a new one tomorrow, hope that one will boot.

I did however succeed in updating the Bios to 211, tho my fans make slightly more noise, is it me or is this true... Sucks a bit, cause I liked the real silence ;)

Try hitting ESC at post and selecting it there, instead of DEL (bios menu). Also try reformatting stick, don't use quick format.

Its probably the software that SanDisk puts on there usb drivers. Try getting rid of it. Then when booting hit esc and see if your usb shows up.

    Chastity, Hellcry or anyone?

Does anyone know if you are currently running the MSI/Clevo VBIOS if you have to first revert back to factory vbios and factory ATI drivers, then flash to new vbios or can I go directly to new vbios without reverting anything. Just want to know if there are any gotchas when bouncing versions.

    Thanks

I figured out my issue. It was due to a C++ redistributable update from Windows. I did an over ride on it since it was due to that by using the command line.

    Open up your command prompt
Change your directory to the location of the 64bin\atisetup.exe and run the parameters -install -output screen.

Have you flashed to MSI vbios then to new vbios or did you just hear it was fine for others... it goes without saying.. no one likes bricking.

So I take it that I can keep my 10.8 ati drivers then just flash directly to chastity new overdrive vbios.

Yes, I have not done it but my friend who has the same laptop has flashed his like 20 times. Everytime he wanted hdmi he would flash back to asus vbios then when he played a game he would flash back to msi. Hes crazy i know :)

kk, updated it and seems to work. Don't got time to do real testing.

I have a question tho, since bios 211 fans seems to make a little bit more noise. Tho I never seen them spin up or down, played WOW for a bit and they stay at 30% (HWInfo) with a max gpu temp of 70C.

Is it possible to turn them down a bit or revert back to bios 209 which seems to be a bit quieter... Or am I seeing ghosts... Maybe get some canned air and spray the vents clean ;)

Question for those of you mentioning the 1-2 second pause in games. Does it happen every time you play, every time you load and enter a level, or only once then things resume like normal (as long as game is not quit and restarted).

If I remember correctly, my desktop with a 4870X2 has a new little glitch sounding similar to this. Saw it most clearly in Dirt 2 once going from the 10.6 drivers I was on for ages to the 10.8's The game would run and play fine, but the first race I started, a short distant in the game would pause for 1 - 2 seconds, then resume like normal and have no issues whatsoever. I am wondering if anyone has tried 10.6 or older drivers (10.5 would be good) and see if that "pause" still exist. I believe it to be more of an ATI driver thing more than something to do with the new vBios.

(Don't have my G73 yet so can't test anything outside of my desktop) 1 more day.... Dang the wait.

Also I am a big fan atm of installing the 10.7 Beta driver first since it is an all inclusive driver (HDMI Audio, Avivo, etc), then installing the 10.8 driver over the top of it. (Installing newer drivers over older ones works fine. Going back to older drivers requires an uninstall + Driver Sweep.)

    10.7 Beta

Bios 211 starts spinning up the cooling fans at lower temps than bios 209, so there will be a little more noise. HWInfo does a bad job of reporting fan speed and only reports 30% or 100% even though I have heard my GPU fan ramp up as temps increase while running Furmark and since my repaste job I never get to 100%.

Just noticed this myself, did a quick fubar and did hear the fan spin up, but HWInfo keep stating 30% ;)... Max temp was like 88C when fans spinned up good. BTW do you know a monitor which does do a good job at reading the fan speeds of the G73JH.

I noticed these to in WOW after the Bios 211, vBios and CCC 10.8 update. It happens in the game at an irreguar interval. Just a very short freeze, like a small hickup, and then the game continues as normal. Same thing happens when I do a Fubar, only more often, based on feeling.

Haven't tried older driver yet, always been of the factory drivers and never seen this problem, will check it out later. Hope this is fixable else the vBios update did not help that much, lol....

Pauses/freezing are either due to core parking or latency/lag in online games.

Core parking disabled and latency doesnt cause the game to freeze up, just makes the characters stand still for a while, its completely different.
I believe its the new vBios - perhaps powerplay accidentally switching clocks to 2d for a second while i play. As i said this never happened on the stock vBios, just started happening on the beta and this new vBios both of which have powerplay. Ill keep GPU-z open next time and when i get another freeze ill alt-tab out and check the clocks graphs to see if its powerplay downclocking or not... If it is, the solution is simple - disable powerplay when gaming :).

Perhaps on said laptop if that is the issue, but the issue I describe happens on a Q9550 machine with a 4870X2. The slight pause I noticed once I move up to the 10.8 drivers. (After I messed with the 2nd core 2D clock issue and such so I know it wasn't due to the GPU clocks switching).

Now on this laptop it may be just drivers, or as HC mentions, the 2D clocks could be flicking on for a split second for whatever reason. With the Mobility cards, can you right click on the ATI icon in the taskbar and force 3D clocks through the 3D settings like I can on my X2? I wonder if that could help remove things from this small problem search. (Disabling power play may also do the exact same thing, again can't test hands on just yet)

Usually I always disable GPU power saving features when gaming for stability reasons but when its chilling at desktop, viewing videos, or web browsing it is left on.

What does this actually do to units that DONT have the GSOD problems.

Potentially unlocks a bit more performance (and possibly heat). Besides that if you can already use any ATI driver outside of the ASUS ones, you won't see a huge change nor should it cause your system to GSOD if it does not already.

You'll never know, and everybody never know since companies ALWAYS tag theirs updates as "improvement for something", where something can be stability, security, etc. Are you ever hear/listen/read a company state their updates is "for fix what we screw up", "fix our firmware" or "fix our mistake" or even "fix a gap in our code".... ask apple, they are expert in this :D

Wont work... Overdrive is still half broken on this vBios (thats why i suspect they kept it locked) - the memory clock will stay at its overclocked state even after exiting 3d applications, only the core will downclock... You can try it and youll see what i mean :).

I know its a tad riskier but you could find a 100% stable OC and edit the vBios to have that as your norm/gaming clock correct? Then PP would work with the OC?

It just causes issues if the OC craps out on you at a later date lol.

So far it looks like the new vBios fixes most all the users who had GSOD issues. The only other issue atm is people having issues flashing the vBios to the GPU but that has been addressed through the thread multiple times. What part in particular are you lost at?

Ok, so let me get my info correct :)

This new VBIOS will aid in the GSOD issues if you are having them BUT power play is still not working 100%. HDMI still works unlike the other hacked VBIOS's.
There is a plan for a new VBIOS soon with working powerplay. Anyone have an ETA?

    Is that information correct? Thanks!
