Yeah my system came in today from HIDEvolution, base specs except for the i7 3630 and the 7200RPM HD

So far it's a really excellent systems, decent build quality quite fans even on load and idle.

My only complaints is having windows 8, man I hate windows 8 with a burning passion. I wish there was a way to put windows 7 then it would be perfect. Also having a resolution of 1600x900 at least

Other then that, if I were to compare it to my old m14x it blows it out of the water in terms of performance and cooling

Not whining, just saying. It's hard to believe that it seems like the laptop doesn't support windows 7 which i find hard. I'm sure in the future someone will find a way to install windows 7 in that thing. It's like going from XP to Vista, no thanks

How is the sound quality? Is it better than the G55? I've read reviews that said that the speakers are crap on the 55.

Well it will run it as all the major part vendors from chipset to GPU will have official drivers for it, it's just asus does not officially support it.

    Doesn't HIDEvolution offer W7?
Wonder if they have all the hardware/software running like it should with it.
How is the screen quality? I don't mind the lower res just taking opinions about hiw it looks.

    @IKAS V,

They do offer windows 7, I'll call their tech support this week and ask them if they can help me with their windows 7 installation through the phone.

The screen quality is ok, it's a matte finish compared to glossy so it's less reflective however, matte reduces the picture quality. Personally I think when I had my M14x the 1600x900 resolution is better compared to the g46
If you do like photo editing or something like that and you need something where image quality is very important then the screen will disappoint you

I don't believe so yet, I have read Best Buy has the exclusive agreement with Asus for Quarter 1 of 2013, and then it will be available to other resellers. Not sure if Best Buy sells over seas, but even here it's currently only available as an in store pickup. Guess they are doing everything they can to get us in the store ha.

I have run across another question to those still using the factory install:

My touchpad buttons only recognize one input at a time, ie when playing a First Person Shooter (Far Cry 3 & Max Payne 3 are what I've played so far and they both do the same) and I right click to zoom or look down sights, I can't hold that button and then tap left button to fire. It works the same whether I try and tap the pad or click the left button. Not sure if something I've done with a driver install, or if it's a hardware issue. All my other laptops allowed both buttons to be pressed at the same time when needed. When using a USB mouse it works of course.

As a side note I don't play often with the touchpad, but occasionally do. The buttons have a great feel and are two separate physical buttons. Would like to be able to use iron sites and shoot!
    Thanks for the info!

The Notebookcheck review is pretty harsh on its ability to perform everyday tasks, " For word processing and general office work, this notebook is near the bottom of our recommendation list". Would this be fixed with the replacement of the HDD with a solid state drive? Also, I'm considering using this as my main rig. Would this be suggested? Or do people think that the poor display prevents it from being used as a main machine. Any help would much be appreciated!

Yeah the HD is really slowing down the laptop, if you were to replace it with an SSD like that you suggested it would make the machine super fast. The resolution is all depending on you, if your a photo editor then yes the 1366x768 reso will kill you. If your not too big on screen quality, then the 1366x768 reso should suffice. On a side note, these computers come standard with windows 8, if you like windows 8 then your in luck, if not then your just going to have to adjust and get used to it. Havent found a way to get windows 7 loaded on it yet

    @Nivaku
Is it better than the M14x that you had? I know the ASUS is much quieter (which I love) but overall built quality just as good/bad?
Is the ASUS bigger or smaller than the AW?

In my honest opinion, the g46 is better compared to the m14x r2 i had, the build quality is also a tad bit better. The asus is bigger, but it's like bearly bigger which shouldn't really make a big difference

1 hard drive bay is correct, but there is also a mSata slot on the board that is possible for future use for a second drive. I haven't tried and there is another post saying he couldnt get a drive to be recognized in the slot so possibly needs a future bios update to enable... not sure

Depends where you buy it ;) Here in NC it was $1067.00 out the door.

Also, someone asked about why the review from notebookcheck.net said it was low on their list of productivity machines.... my best guess is the sluggish stock HDD.... with an SSD installed I've been working on it all morning seamlessly on battery with Word/Excel, scanning/printing, PDF editing etc and trying to dig out of the backlog of work emails and it's still showing 6 hours 46 minutes remaining (77%) after about 3 hours of constant office usage... that's sure better than what its replacing ha!

For anyone interested here's a quick little review by another user, but also of more interest to some are tips for installing Windows 7... I personally really like 8 after getting used to it on my previous laptop...boot/shutdown time is way faster and general snappiness is improved over 7 imho, but for those that don't like change :p, here ya go:

See my post in the other thread with the broken connector but basicly just have to pop the keyboard loose... its directly under there accessible from the top. Not hard by any means but definitely more involved than a simple user panel.

There's no option in the bios to change from UEFI to legacy boot is there? I cannot seem to find it

I'm trying to get windows 7 installed, and man oh man it's giving me a hard time. I've created the USB windows 7 boot drive, formatted it to fat32 and followed the instructions carefully on how to do it but I'm still getting an 0xc000d error. Yes I've tried googling its still no help.

There are many circles but you guys mention it's an easy step... is this images of teardown for the whole thing?
Is there one showing how to change JUST the hard drive, or a video? I've never done this before on a laptop and I'm very uneasy... but this 5400rpm is killing me. Also, what are good SSDs to replace it?

Hey guys. Ted from HIDevolution here. I'm not sure if it's been covered, but the G46 uses an eDP display connector (not the standard LVDS), and a 14" 1600x900 eDP display does not exist right now.

We do have the G46VW-BHI5N43 in stock. I can answer any questions you guys have.

Hi Ted, welcome to the boards!

Since you guys tear these things apart and upgrade, I gotta ask, any idea if the extra mSATA port is useable? It's been posted it won't fit a full size mSATA drive by Coderedpl, but curious if there are any options you guys have run across? Curious for possible future upgrages in that regard.

    Thanks!

Right, the mSATA slot doesn't fit a full size mSATA SSD. AFAIK there are no major companies that make a half size mSATA SSD. I've seen some no name half size mSATA SSDs on ebay, but they are only 32GB. I suppose it can be used a caching drive, but I wouldn't trust a no name SSD in the first place.

what was the point of them sticking that slot there if they dont have an option any hardware to put there say from someone they are partnered with to make it and like you said, no one really makes thats size... what was the point?

Now that I think about it, I suspect the mSATA slot is there for the ability to upgrade to mobile broadband. Or perhaps Asus has something in the works to put a proprietary half size mSATA SSD in there.

Is it possible to clean install windows 8 VIA USB DVD-ROM. I know you can't do that for windows 7 unfortunately but for windows 8 are you able to since it's the newest OS with maybe the correct format for UEFI bios?

    Can anyone also help me?
I have a driver problem USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller (Code 31) I cannot seem to locate windows 8 drivers for it, if anyone knows the solution that would be helpful

    Thanks in Advance!

On the g46 if you hit f9 when you turn it on it will boot to a asus recovery and you can do a factory image reinstall.

System restore would be the easiest reinstall, but yes you can do a clean Windows 8 install, I did a clean install of 8 Pro when I upgraded to my SSD. Then you have to install the drivers and any Asus software you might want. Works just fine, depends what you are after.

When I installed Windows 8 on the SSD, all I needed was the CD. I did not have to put in a key or anything. I bought an OEM DVD and when it was installed it was already activated.
