Its about 130. The DVDs you find in Best Buy and staples are only upgrades, you will have to get them shipped. I purchased the Pro version for myself.

Just as a side note, you can use an upgrade usb stick to do the full install... everything is there. All you have to do is add an ei.cfg file to the sources folder that tells it to install your particular version and either skip your key during installation and enter during activation or let it use the key already in your uefi. Works great and saves having to have a full install disk.

This is how I did it as I don't have an oem or retail install disk.

I just don't see how thy get away with making you pay for it twice. I mean you paid for it when you buy the machine. They should provide a disc.

Curious, anybody with a g46 having touchpad issues? Mines started acting wonky, missing touch pressures and skipping all over the place. Trying to determine if it's a hardware or driver issue. Its some odd branded touchpad I've never owned before.

EDIT: Appears to only be a software issue, so that's good! I'm still not sure what the conflict was, but after uninstalling Logitech Setpoint software that I had installed for an external wireless pointing device and the Asus Elantech drivers/gesture software, the problem has gone away and pointer function is back to normal. I'll tinker with it some more to determine which was actually causing the problem, but my gut blames a conflict of having both drivers/gesture softwares installed together.

As a follow up to my previous post I have discovered the cause of the problem I was having with the touchpad: It was the actual electrical outlet itself in my home office. Must have a bad ground in the circuit. As soon as I plugged the AC adapter back into the same outlet I was using earlier when the problems started I had the same crazy jumpy erratic touchpad after I thought I had fixed the problem! Unplugged from wall and it worked perfect again. Moved to a different circuit in the house and plugged back in and touchpad still works properly while charging. My apologies for any confusion, I was quite confused, as the cursor was going crazy and I was trying to work ha... software/drivers were not the problem!

Now to troubleshoot the circuit in my house... always something!

With the M14X I am not sure it quite gets that title, but the two would be very close.

Well for sure the SLI'd version of the Ideapad Y400 would get the title before either of the two.

Like I said in my post though, with deals like this Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Laptop: Core i7-3632QM, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD + 16GB SSD, 15.6 " 1920x1080, 2GB GeForce GT 650M, Blu-Ray, Windows 8: $836 + tax with Shop Discover, its hard to think Asus is putting out all of it self. I still would buy it and I'm one to wait till black friday to even consider buying any laptop, even so I think there should be mSATA,QM CPU,7200rpm at the bare minimum for 1k asking price.

Well, comparing them would ultimately go down to a GPU showdown since that's likely the only thing not really upgradable with the M14x bringing a GT650M and the G46VW with its GTX660M. Then again, the GTX660M is essentially an overclocked GT650M so it would definitely be a close call.

It is not an overclocked 660m. I hate it when people say that.

I did a fresh install of windows 8, will ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities get my lights back on my back-lit keyboard?

The only driver I needed to install was ASUS Wireless Radio Control (A driver to make you switch Airplane mode(Wireless) On/Off)

They can all be found on the asus rog website on the asus g46vw download section

Yes, install the ATK for backlight and keyboard shortcuts to work.

I went through and installed all the drivers and just left off the Asus bloatware apps. Definitely get your chipset, audio, NVidia and intel wireless drivers updated.

Depends which version it installed, mine had a few basic reference drivers installed that I wanted updated after the clean install... I always like to keep the important ones updated. I'd recommend installing the drivers off the Asus page at this point with it being so new, they are pretty much all up to date except for gpu, get that straight from Nvidia.

There are no touchpad settings on the Elantech on g46, only smart gesture. Basically you can't adjust settings like two way scrolling/ 1 way scrolling, palm sensitivity etc... things like that.

@Nivaku - Did you happen to find the driver for this piece of hardware? I too have just purchased the G46VW from Best Buy and upon loading the Device Manager, this is the only driver that seems to be missing. All the other drivers and software have been pre-installed when the machine was setup upon the first boot. I also restarted a few times and ran all the newest updates from Windows to no avail. All my hardware seems to be working fine but it's just one of those things that irks me a bit.. I would expect that there would be no driver problems on the first boot from the OEM. I'm not even too sure what the hardware is but judging by the name, I would venture to guess that it maybe has something to do with the Intel Wireless Display technology? If anyone has any advice on the subject, please let me (and others as I would figure they are also having the problem) know. Thanks in advance everyone!

@Meaker - Thanks! I was planning on visiting Intel's support site to do just that and I had completely forgotten about it. Upon updating the Wireless Display driver, the proper driver was found and the service is now running perfect. All drivers are accounted for and everything is running smooth. I'm very happy with this purchase so far. Thanks again!!

If you go to the Asus Smart Gesture program, there is an option on the top right to disable touchpad when mouse is detected. Haven't tried it but that should do it!

From what I've read, it was apparently a date issue with the original driver 3.5.34 that upon January 1, 2013 it no longer worked, ie mine currently doesn't load like you had but when I first got the machine it did... Intel has since updated to 3.5.40 that solves the problem, but for some reason when I try to install the package it says my machine isn't WiDi compatible... and I've been stuck there since. Curious why yours installed!

It doesn't actually matter, as I don't use WiDi currently, but it irks me as well ha

Please elaborate on that then. My understanding of the 2 GPUs is that the GT650M has a lower overall clock compared to the GTX660M when everything else is essentially identical.

I'm surprised they felt they needed a 180W brick with this device, and made no attempt to make a thin one to go with the thinner machine.

I suppose you could mod a thin alienware brick to the right cable to make it more portable...

is that brick bigger than the one used with the g53 and i guess g73,, cause those are huge and heavy, was hoping that everything with the g46 would be more portable.

The odd thing is that's not the brick I got with my g46... I got a slightly smaller sleeker (more rounded) unit with different cables. Its smaller than my g73 adapter. I'll have to see what the model number is.

    Edit: mine came with a FA180PM111, output 19.5v - 9.23A

Edit 2: see post #292, Coder posted pics of his, that's the one I got with mine.
