Should have gone for a notebook with GTX 680M if you were looking to game with 60fps on high... 45fps on high for BF3 at 1366 x 768 with a GTX 660M sounds about right.
-
-
Which should be nice and playable.
hell. my 460m does between 15-32fps in planetside 2 on high-medium no shadows and 1080p. its low. but its playable.
I cant wait to upgrade -
I have been using a 1 tb 7200 rmp western digital for my desktop with pyro ssd, and it works just fine, but i heard seagate is better for laptop, and i prefer you get the hybrid ones, hybrid hdd are common now and they do increase performance but alot with just 10 more than what u pay for normal hdd -
I had absolutely no issues running battlefield 3 smoothly on highest settings. I granted I didn't check what fps it was but believe me I know what smooth is.
-
Can you do me a favor and let me know if it is a steady 60 FPS for you? Hit ` in game to open console and type Render.Drawfps 1
Also, not sure what I think of the touchpad. Anyone's touchpad spas out frequently? -
mines working really well, try to get the new drivers from asus support page, i'm using a mouse for game instead
-
Possible thats your problem too, unless it does it on battery as well. -

I'm currently in Europe right and the wireless channels they permit is 1-13 instead of the typical 1-11 in America. Does anyone know if their wifi card was able to connect to channel 13? I just want to know ahead of time because in about a week or so I'm going to test it and I would like to see if anyone here is from Europe and know's from first hand experience. I've been reading in the forums that I may have to download European wifi drivers, but I cannot seem to find them on the asus websites
Thanks in advance! -

These pads can be surprisingly sensitive to surrounding interference, as suggested try it off battery and in a different room/building to isolate it.
-
I'd buy one of these today if I could get an i7 and a 1600x900 panel on it.
Any leaks as to when such a model might hit the streets? -
I've broken off the laptop ribbon cable connector while taking off the keyboard.
Using a link to Codered's pics, the circled part is what I broke off.

What are my options here? What can be done to fix this? Any help is appreciated!!
(the cable connector to the motherboard is intact, it's the one on the underside of the keyboard that's broken). -
-
This has happened before on here, he might be able to offer suggestions. -
Ah, yes, that's the EXACT same thing that's happened to me. The ribbon cable itself is fine, as well as the part where it connects to the motherboard, but the connector underneath the keyboard not only came off but also broke in half. I'll message him to see if he's had any developments in his case or not....

How do I boot to BIOS on this machine?
-
-
When is this model going to appear in Amazon ?..
-
Sorry to see this has happened to you too.
I asked Asus, they said I could send it back to them, without warranty, because obviously it's void now. Then they'll give you a quote on the price to fix it. You should call the Asus technical support, and ask for a RMA.
I live in France, so I'm just waiting for it to come out here, and then order a replacement part. My other computer still works, so I can wait.
Hope this helps -
Hey Guys, reporting in with updates on the mSata installation:
The mSata SSD I ordered showed up today so I attempted to get it installed. Amazon and NewEgg had the Crucial m4 256GB mSATA Internal SSD CT256M4SSD3 on sale for a decent price, I had a gift card from Christmas, and always the curious tinkerer I am, I wanted to try and add one to my system. Bottom line after a little fiddling and some modifications, it is working great just as posted previously by JwPwns! A quick CrystalMark test showed a read speed of 510mb/s and a write of 268mb/s, and formatted space in windows is 238GB. I've currently got it setup as my D: drive.
Installation is a bit tricky as it does require complete disassembly of the system to allow removal of the motherboard. It is more involved than just a HDD upgrade as the open mSata slot is located on the bottom of the motherboard. As reported there is a battery mount screw/tab/peg in the way to allow the motherboard to fully seat down with the mSata drive installed.... some choose to leave the motherboard loose and let it float up, which I don't see really being an issue, but it does sit right beside the card reader and HDMI port which I use regularly so I wanted everything nice and tight..... so I decided to go ahead and remove the extra screw/tab/peg as it appears to be overkill anyway for simply holding the battery down. A quick Dremel tool cut later to the plastic peg and tab and everything goes back together nicely.
That's when things got a bit frustrating... I got the system reassembled, booted up, but no matter what I did in BIOS the drive was not recognized... enabling RAID did nothing, and under SATA settings nothing showed up for the msata drive I just installed, only the existing drive. About to give up, I then remembered seeing a BIOS update on the Asus website that updated to 209 from my 205... it only mentioned a bug fix for fan issues, but I figured why not at least try... Updated successfully, rebooted, and BAM the drive showed up as Disk 0, my current Samsung SSD as Disk 1.... Left things in AHCI mode, booted to windows, went to computer management and formatted the drive, and it appears to be working properly.
The slot is definitely meant for a "half size" type mSata, but they aren't readily available in reliable high capacity SSD's at this point.... I'm sure like everything they will be in the future and maybe that is what ASUS is planning.... it clearly says "SSD" by the screw mounting hole.
So, for anyone out there that does go through the trouble of installing one, make sure you update to at least BIOS version 209 if not already running it! -
wooot kudos to be77solo, nice msata ssd you got there, mine's only 128 =( anyways hehe we are among the first ones to have msata running in our G46!! oh n the weird thing is.. my bio is still 205 0_0
-
I still can't access the BIOS. There is no option or screen and no interval when I would be able to press F2.
-
Generally to get into a BIOS on any machine just start mashing the F2 key the moment you hit the power button .
If need be keep one finger on the F2 key while using the other hand to power on the machine.
Many computers do not give people enough time to hit the key after the machine actually powers on. -
Well I hit escape and that worked. But I wanna boot off my USB and there isn't an option for that... something must be wrong.
-
-
Can Be77 do a write up on installing the SSD with pictures?? Maybe like a tutorial or a walkthrough that would be awesome for when i buy my SSD.
Thanks -
The custom part then depends on your ssd you bought and how you want to secure it. -
you have to disable secure boot and enable launch csm if you havn't done so, thats the only way to get it to boot off usb, because secure boots prevents any other bootable drives other than the original windows 8 bootmgnr, after you done those two there shouldn't be any problem of detecting the usb. -
Secure boot? Do you mean fast boot? That's all I see. Also, when enable launch csm, I save it and then it just goes back to being disabled...
Got it! Also flashed my bios to 209 -
I believe those of you who broke the connector off simply didn't unlatch. I did not use force to remove mine. The white part has to be pulled up if I remember correctly which I'm pretty sure I do.
I did this like 3 times or so when I had the laptop so the connector being ripped off is definitely something that's being done wrong. I also had no guide to go by when I first opened it and I didn't break it so yea. -
I want to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro... how much should that cost me?

Hello everyone,my 1st post
, anyways, I have a friend who is in Singapore whom I've asked to see if G46 is available there or not because its not yet available in my country(I reside in India), he said its for around 1000 SGD ie. roughly around 800$. Do you think I should tell him to get it from there or is it a fake copy or something like that? (Yeah I know its for 1000$ in US). Thanks in advance

Yo guys should I wait till June to get a refreshed model of the g46vw? As of right now I have an m11x r1 and it's doing fine.
I'm hoping that by June or July that they can put in a gt 760m, the new haswell processor, 900p screen, and pre-configured ssd's. -
It depends on what you are trying to do with the machine... I had a m11x R1 that was great as well I bought back at launch, but unfortunately the performance was no longer meeting my needs so I decided to upgrade. There's really no comparison to performance between these two machines.
But to answer your question, yes there will be faster versions available in the coming months once other resellers get the machine released. Best Buy has the exclusive for Q1 and that's why you aren't seeing more varieties at the moment.

How can I overclock the CPU on this machine?
-
-
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
-
As a side note I do have an i7-3630qm I picked up cheap I plan to install in the next week or so... hoping that project goes smoothly. -
-
If l do, l will swap out for another CPU down the road.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 3720qm and above are partially unlocked so you can get another 400mhz in machines with multiplier control or XTU support.
-
Well, got the i7 3630qm installed, found a great deal on ebay and couldn't resist giving it a shot... it was detected in bios and windows properly, and appears to be functioning properly. A 3DMark11 run to test if everything's playing nice together ran fine. Physics score went from 3306 with the i5 to 6916 with the i7. I'll report back tomorrow with temps and how it runs in games, but a quick round of Crysis 3 Beta ran great without any hiccups and smooth performance. Haven't noticed any difference in fan noise in those two quick tests.

Hi! This is what notebookcheck wrote about the 1366x768 matte display, can you please tell me if the 1600x900 one is better in any way or not?
"The 1366x768 resolution display here gets the job done, but is subjectively not as crisp as it could have been and is not representative of the high starting price of the notebook.
To add insult to injury, maximum brightness is only average and much below the displays of the G75VW, G75V, G55VW, and Alienware M14x. The average brightness of around 183 cd/m2 is more akin to less expensive budget notebooks. The matte display does allow the notebook to be used indoors without any distracting glare, so the weak backlight should not be an issue for users intending to use the G46 mostly as an indoor computer. Contrast, though not bad, is equally unimpressive at about 400:1.
Color space reproduction is average and covers about 62 percent of the sRGB standard. This coverage is very similar to that of the M14x and a number of budget notebooks, but underperforms when compared to the larger Asus G Series models and other high-end Ultrabooks. To gamers and most users, this is not an issue as those demanding high color precision for digital graphics work are more likely to opt for more expensive workstations with higher quality panels.
Outdoor usability is poor due to the low maximum brightness" -

Been stuck doing some actual work this morning, gotta pay for these toys ha... I'll have some time to play with it a bit this afternoon I'm hoping. Was curious of temps while browsing, emailing, office etc while working so had some monitors up:
Seems to be idling and running basic office programs pretty much identical to the i5 and is consistent across the cores... so hopefully that means my paste job was decent. -
Looking good.
