Even if they use 100% similar hardware there's the difference that nVidia guarantees that the GTX 660M can run the speed and support the faster memory clock. Don't know how nVidia operates but it is common in the industry to do tests in order to decide how fast a certain die can reliably run.

I think the trigger point for gitt13 was the word "overclock" as the GTX 660M _is_ essentially a higher clocked GT 650M :)

hi guys! i'm planning to buy my first notebook and i'm leaning towards this one. i really love the look and the power. since i have never got used to fhd or hd+ screen, i think i'm pretty comfortable with hd.

i read the battery cannot be removed. i think this is gonna be a problem overcharging the battery when gaming, coz unplugging the ac adapter causes throttling issues right? how do you guys get around this? is there a way to play for about 5 hours straight without overcharging the battery and without unplugging the ac?

    thanks!

There is no such thing as overcharging with modern li-po or li-io batteries. It will automatically stop charging the battery when it reports full charge

I keep my battery plugged in all the time but I also use my laptop on battery a lot and that's where the wear comes from (repeated charge discharge cycles) rather than keeping it charged all the time.

Does anyone know if the current or upcoming gaming MSI laptops utilize a dual-fan system similar to what Asus is using? From doing my research, I only see 1 fan and 1 exhaust. Can anyone confirm for me please?

    > play for about 5 hours straight without overcharging the battery and without unplugging the ac

In any device (laptops especially), battery life is very dependent on what you are doing. There is no laptop that will let you play full 3d games for five hours straight at decent framerates. You can probably squeeze out just over an hour of gaming at reduced framerates on this laptop.

You cannot "overcharge the battery" by any conventional means.

You can play as long as you want without unplugging the adapter.

I have no idea but curious you jumping ship after getting your G46? I gotta say I've been very happy with mine so far.

Just played with LCD Display calibration, and my LCD at least to my eyes was really blue by default.... toned that down and going through the Win8 display calibration and online tests, and things look much better... ie compared to other Monitors and Laptops that I'm using which were much more vibrant and warmer than default.

As a side note just installed X-Plane 10 and glad to see it runs just fine from initial testing.

Just got one of these over the weekend at Best Buy, and so far it's proving to be a great machine! Performance has been superb on all the games I've thrown at it thus far, machine looks/feels great, and adjustment to Windows 8 isn't too awful so far. Bloatware even seems to be manageable, though that may just be the new interface keeping it out of sight and mind. Only issue thus far is a fluke bad USB port; probably going to swing back by the store and just have the unit replaced, since I've quickly exhausted all driver/device manager-based remedies. Overall, though, definitely exceeding my expectations and seems well worth the money at this point.

I saw that, and turns out it's a totally separate issue (one that does afflict all new systems unfortunately). I've already gone ahead and exchanged for a new unit which works perfectly, so I'm a happy camper.

hey guys, good news! two days ago I opened my G46 and swap in my Patriot pyro SSD and it works and boots straight up to the preinstalled window 7, so I decided to get a msata and dual boot with the old slow HDD that it came with. The msata arrived today and I immediately got to work and open this precious little G46 up. I installed it with no problem other than the screw being in the way. At first I was wondering if it would work so I didn't put the whole thing back together and just connect the cables and check, no ssd detected. so I went to bios and put on raid mode. Guess WHAT? chicken butt =D sorry but I'm just so excited about this and can't wait to install stuff on my new Msata SSD along with a 750G slave drive, =) end of story. GRAB THE G46 and a msata SSD now! =D

Thanks for the information on the mSata installation, I saw it looked like it would fit when I had mine apart, but nobody had actually posted that it was able to be read... good to know thanks! Curious, how fast does it perform? If you can it would be great if you could run CrystalDiskMark and see how it compares to an SSD in the main bay. (I can post those results for comparison)

I do have another question to those familiar with Nvidia gpu's: On battery the 660m fluctuates wildly between 135mhz to 800ish MHz, is there anyway to stabilize this performance? I'm trying to do some gaming on the go and the Intel GPU isn't quite enough. I realize full performance for the 660m isn't possible from what I have read in previous threads about other gpu's, but is it at least possible to lock the speed on battery to prevent constant swings?

As an example, a game I'm trying to run on high performance plugged in is buttery smooth 70-90+fps at 900-1035mhz, but on battery it fluctuates constantly from 11fps when the GPU is at 135mhz on up to 50+fps when at 800mhz... it's perfectly playable if it would stay at the higher battery clock rate even though that's still lower than the plugged in speed, but the dips kill the experience.

As a side note, the Intel gpu struggles to run 19fps plugged in or not.

Coming from the Alienware M11x, it was significantly slower than the g46, but the GPU wasn't so gimped on battery by default so could still game just fine... I'm sure there has to be a solution somehow? Thanks for any information!

EDIT: CrystalMark Information added for comparison to mSATA... this is using the full size ssd in signature

i wonder if you can migrate your windows 8 install to the SSD you install and use the 700gig as a storage drive..

there is migrating software but would it work to the msata??

that was without charger plugged in so i dont know if it would make any difference, but yeah for the GPU question you have, on the powerplans could only select intel gpu to set to performance on battery, i couldn't find any options to change the nvidia one and installing other nvidia drivers is not possible because asus requires this laptop's nvidia driver to be downloaded from them.. so yeah if someone else figure out how to out this out please post! =D can use some ultra gaming for an hour on battery

Usually it throttles on battery mode to make sure the battery doesn't break after one time discharge. If you do game on battery make sure you switch the machine off at 25%, that way the battery doesn't wear too quickly :D.

Great, thanks for the information! +1 Good to see the port seems to run fast and properly! Thanks again for posting the results.

Also, you can install the latest Nvidia GPU drivers off the Nvidia website no problem... they aren't special hybrid Asus drivers or anything. As long as you have the latest Intel drivers and the latest Nvidia drivers you'll be good to go and optimus still works properly.

Quick question, off topic about the drivers question above...

I've read the whole thread and subsequently purchased the G46 a couple of weeks ago for my wife. She loves it, it works flawlessly and the screen isn't that big of an issue to me. My only gripe personally is the HD as well and I'd rather not void any warranty by switching it out to a 7200rpm or SSD. Prior posts indicate they may release a different version (non BestBuy proprietary) in Q2? Can someone link where they got this information from? I want to buy one for myself but would most likely wait for the updated version. Any recent info or developments on this version as well?

    TYIA!

thats the way to go matt! forget the in store ssd G46 that comes out in Q2,,most likely they will charge 1300+ for the ssd + hdd combo, i rather do it myself n save the 200 for others, 1 year warranty isn't going to do much (knock on the wood) as these machinese are build to last

I love this thing even though I currently have no clue how to navigate Windows 8.

My one gripe with the laptop thus far: I need to press the space bar relatively hard for it to respond. It seems dead otherwise... pretty bummed about that.

    Hi Josh,

There is some good information about what you are asking over at G75, G55 & G46 Series Notebooks

See the earlier posts about the G46 and it talks about the other versions that will be available in a few months talked about by the in house Asus representative.

As a side note, I understand that opening the laptop does theoretically void the warranty, but curious, how would Asus even know if something else totally unrelated had an issue. Obviously if it's something I broke it's my fault, but I don't recall cutting or even seeing any warranty stickers etc when I swapped HDD to SDD... it only entails popping the keyboard up and swapping caddy's and is fairly straight forward.

And in other thoughts, I have yet to have any issue at all with the spacebar but I have read that comment more than once... I guess a few of the keyboards have a slightly different feel but mine has been perfectly responsive so far....knock on wood!

Curious, have you tried a clean install of the Nvidia driver? I didn't have any issue at all installing the latest gpu driver, and as even newer Nvidia drivers are released it will be that much more important for the latest games....

To be honest, this is running a lot slower than my NP6110. I uninstalled all the bloatware and it still feels very sluggish. I have only installed Origin, 7zip, newest nVidia drivers and daemon tools.

It's the horrible stock HDD... I was severely disappointed out of the box, it's that bad... I can't recommend upgrading that one component enough! Swap in either a good 7200rpm HDD or a SSD and it's a world of difference.

I thought changing the HD on this machine was extremely tedious?

Thanks for the link. I'll start reading. I don't know what it is about laptops but I'm always a bit nervous to open them. I've been building my own PC's for 13 years, and owned and torn apart for upgrades 3 laptops over the last 5 years. For some reason I never get them put back together as solid as they were from the factory. Although the HD change is pretty straight forward I'm sure... I'm probably more likely to buy the version that comes with it out of the box. Unfortunately, I don't have any spare HD's laying around either so I'd have to purchase one.

I'll keep you posted if I decide to do the HD switch though. I'm sure I might have some questions.

    Thanks again.

No problem, they talk about the other g46 models in one of the earlier threads and answers your questions... I'd have linked directly but was on my phone and couldn't find the thread. They talk about units that will have both different HDD's and also combinations of mSata SSD's and HDD's direct from the factory depending on how the resellers order them. Best Buy just paid to have the exclusive for the first few months.

Also, that second paragraph about opening the laptop wasn't directed at you but to another post a few threads back, my apologies if I confused matters... I definitely do not recommend opening up the laptop unless you are sure it's something you want to do.

Wow, I honestly cannot believe how slow this thing runs when I am installing a program. I have to sit and wait a minute each time I open a program. Unbelievable.

Too small for me. I'm probably gonna end up getting a 750gb 7200rpm WD.

I'm surprised at how poorly BF3 is running. Can't get a steady 60fps on low.... should I overclock?

I was going to say the same thing. I haven't ran BF3 but I think your G46 may have some issues. While the 5400 HD is slow, it's not 1990's slow. My wife maxes out Sims 3 on hers with full graphics and has no issues. She's got every expansion installed and the game is very HD and memory intensive. It loads rather quickly, and gameplay is flawless once loaded. Maybe you should take it back to BestBuy and switch it out for a new one?

There are some gaming benchmarks towards the bottom of this review that should give you some reference.

I got the last one left. :/

What is an unsafe amount of memory clock increasing? I am at +84 I don't really wanna push it...

BF3 runs flawlessly for me on high.. you need to wait for another shipment and return the one your using.. no need to overclock while everything is on Low.. maybe ur drivers are bad? Try the newest drivers and manually set your optimus to NVIDIA gpu..

I think thats your issue is the optimus settings/drivers.. intel gpu stuttering on low sounds about right.. check them.

I changed everything in the nvidia panel. I can play on high at a steady 45 fps, but BF3 really requires 60 fps otherwise you're at a disadvantage. Do you get a steady 60 on high?

Quick question: I would like to switch out to a 7200 RPM HD from the stock one.... which HD would you guys recommend? (links
    would we awesome).

....Sorry for a potentially stupid question, but I only recently began upgrading laptops on my own and there's still lots I don't know,
so advice is most appreciated :)

    Thanks in advance!
