I have to agree, it's one heck of a little laptop, I've managed to play most of my games at 1080p, (These aren't the newest ones mind you, but even a lot of the newer ones can play at 1080p on this machine. I plan on setting up a docking station of sorts for it, and will be running both my Sammy (see below) and my Asus in tandem for things. For the price of about $500 or less in some places, you get a lot of bang for buck even with having the i5. (i5's are technically good enough for gaming as it is. i7's are in the upper range and more for video encoding and such, but work fine for gaming too. For the buck though, these little Asus's really pack a punch and you can even safely overclock the gpu on them thanks to the dual cooling.
Side note: anyone having issues like this:
I use core temp to keep an eye on cpu temps, I have used both MSI afterbruner and EVGA Precision X to monitor GPU temps, though when I run either of those it makes my cpu temps rise by a good 10C at minimum. (I've closed out both of the gpu monitors (didn't use both at the same time, one at a time.) and the temps have dropped back to normal. About 42C) This is also all at idle. It has never done this on any other laptop i've owned. Asus, Samsung, even Windows Bootcamp on Mac OSX. I really don't think there is anything wrong with the laptop as the temps stay well within range while gaming. It's like the gpu monitoring stuff pushes the cpu for some reason.
What programs has everyone used to monitor gpu temps and/ or to also allow overclocking?

You can pop those shortcuts in your startup folder if you want it applied all the time.

Had some great memories with this notebook, now I'm selling it.
It has been real -

It's not been out THAT long lol, what are you moving on to?

Any word on the haswell g46?
-
Where can I get the wireless driver (network controller) for Windows 7?
Need it ASAP thanks -
Yeah I'm giving my G46 to my brother, and I bought an AW 14 since I got a good deal on it. The G46 was a great machine though and I'm happy that I purchased it instead of the m14x r2
-
If Intel, then plug into LAN cable go to Intel driver site and use auto checker. -
Was a little more painful than that but I solved it.
-
If I purchase the i5 lower resolution model I am assuming that I can connect it to an external monitor and game 900p or 1080p correct??? Or am I limited to only 720p although I use an external monitor/TV that is capable.
-
You can connect it to an external monitor no problem, the 900p or 1080p all depends on your external monitor's native resolution. My external monitor's native resolution is 1080p so I game on 1080p
-
Where on earth are you all finding these for $500 brand new? I have only seen $799 at my local BestBuy's. I would literally take the rest of the day off from work and go get one this very second.
-Josh -
Myself as well.....I cannot find them for $500 anywhere, and I'm looking refurbished.
So it's not that it is not 1080p or 900p capable, it's simply that the monitor it comes with (ie. the laptop monitor) is not capable of anything other than 720p? However using an external monitor you can game on 1080 and 900p ie. higher resolutions? -

Hi!
Interested in this laptop but I have a few questions for the owners (as well as other people who have the knowledge):
1) Whats holding me off from buying one is the possibility of a refresh, read a few pages back that it wouldn't get Haswell (weird?) but instead get a 760 instead 660 and a higher resolution display which would be nice.
Any other news then the model listed earlier in this thread for an upcoming refresh?
2) Is the warranty voided by replacing the 2.5" HDD?
Seems to be different opinions about this and since I will replace the stock HDD with an SSD this is really something I want to get clarified.
3) Does every model has an mSATA port? If removing the HDD voids the warranty then I'll just install an mSATA SSD IF there is any (of course).
4) Anybody knows which manufacturer and model the 802.11ac wireless card have? Perhaps Intel 7260?
Thanks in advance - TheSwede86 -
@TheSwede86,
There may or may not be a refresh, I don't know what's taking soo long to be honest.
About the warrenty information I don't think it voids the warrenty like how it would on the Razer Blade 14, but I could be wrong though.
I'm pretty sure every model comes with an mSATA port.
The 802.11AC wifi card or the Intel 7260 could be bought from ebay, I'm sure they are compatible with the G46 as long as you get drivers for them.
Sorry for not knowing all the answers, but I do own the G46 with the upgraded i7 and 7200RPM HD. Stock is only 5400RPM which is slow -
- Do you remember if you removed any sticker or something like that when switching the HDD that said "Warranty void" or "Warranty" etc.?
- Do you have the model that comes with 802.11ac? The only model we have in Sweden comes with 802.11ac and wondering which card it has (i.e. the 7260 or some other card). If you do have 802.11ac you should find the card in "Device Manager" under "Network Cards" or something like that. Regardless, the "min." amount of speed for 802.11ac mPCIE should be 867Mbit/s right? Just want to know how the built in card performs vs. the Intel 7260 even though both might be 867Mbit/s. -

Hi guys,
This might sound dumb to ask, but is there anyway to set the threshold for the battery of G46. I know G46 has a great battery life but i hate it at the same time too because it takes forever to wait for the battery to drain to like 20% so that I can plug in the charger and play game. The reason I do that is because I don't want to plug in the whole time and have the battery stay at 100% because that would lower the capacity of the battery over time.
What should I do guys? Can I play game on battery instead? And if I do so, would that hurt the battery because gaming usually consume a lot of power and battery doesn't like to drain too fast either.
This is tricky!!! Please give me your opinion -
To anyone who upgraded to the 900p screen from HIDevolution:
I just upgraded to this screen from HIDevolution and have one question. I easily get LCD distortion in the top left corner (the type you get when you touch a LCD screen) if I touch anywhere on the plastic bezel of the screen.
For example, if I touch the bottom right of the plastic bezel (not the screen itself), the top left of the screen gets distorted a little as if I am touching the top left of the screen itself
Does anyone else have this or is it a defective screen? -
Hey guys,
I am going to buy this machine and I need some of the current owners comment on the followings:
1. How is the keyboard in terms of quality? Specifically, I read somewhere that the space key doesn't correctly register at all times, causing frequent typos.
2. How much does the upgrading to i7 3630QM affect the CPU temperature. Does it lead to throttling in CPU/GPU Full load? (It is very important for me as I am mostly use laptop for rendering and video editing and not gaming).
3. How is the 900p screen in terms of quality? Does it have problems, such as the one mentioned in the post above?
4. And finally, how is the support quality of Asus (and HIDevolution) in US? Does they offer on-site support like Dell?
Thanks -
1. Keyboard for me is decently made, the space-bar thing I never heard of for the G46 specifically, only for the MSI keyboard that are made by steelseries. My keyboard personally is great when I do use it, but I do use an external mechanical keyboard.
2. I use the i7 3610QM I believe and the CPU temps are decent for me, like 85*C. I don't think the G46 suffers from any throttling issues at all from my personal experience.
3. Sadly I cannot answer this question because I use the ty 1366x768 resolution
4. Support quality for Asus is decent, they do not do on-site support like Dell unfortunately. You'd have to send the unit back and wait for it, which can take weeks probably -
Found another one of these at a Best Buy in GA got it for $449.99 + tax.... Brand New.

That's nice!

Certainly a great companion device at that price.

All in all, a great little machine.
I have yet to notice any issues with it, other then I can tell the difference between my Sammy and the Asus laptop's briteness, then again the Sammy has a super bright screen! lol.
Hope your enjoy yours as much as I have, if not more. -
I actually use it as my main device and sold my m18x r2 on the Marketplace not to long ago. I am leaving to go to France very soon and it will be much less of a burden and if I lose it or if its stolen it won't necessarily break me. Bought two for around $950.00 (one was a display model and other one was BNIB) and sold the BNIB one for $800.00 so I did well

Hi,
I purchased mine from HIDevolution around June. I got the 1600x900 screen upgrade. It is really nice with nice viewing angles. For me the screen is a major upgrade as I am able to view it from any position in my bed or on the table. I have noticed that the screen can flex if you apply pressure from only one corner of the screen. But when closed properly from the middle, there is no problem. Other than those observations, HIDevolution did a good job on the install, there is no LCD blur when I touch it at the corners.
Performance from the 660M is good with temps never going above 78 C. The CPU never goes above 80 C under gaming. For CPU intensive applications however, the CPU has been observed to go as high as 95-97 C. I have the i7 3610QM and was using Prime95 when those high CPU temps were observed. I added arctic silver 5 to the cpu and gpu die with some noticeable benefits, but overall the design by ASUS keeps the machine running cool. My only grips are the high CPU temperatures when running prime95 to find prime numbers and not for stress testing. The CPU never throttles. Other than that the CPU and GPU temperatures are never a concern under any other applications for me.
The keyboard is good and keeps clean. The aluminum build quality is superb and the plastic bottom holds up well.

Hi! It also happen to me. How much did asus charge you? Did you order just the part and repair it by yourself? I also need some help with my unit. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

Still no freaking news on the haswell update of G46? Jeez Asus is slow as a
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There is a lot more competition around this generation however so they may still be deciding what to do.
-
Does anyone know if there is a 1920x1080 screen for this laptop? I know the new Alienware 14 has a 1080p screen, but will the connectors fit the asus?
Also if they do a refresh will that new 1080p screen fit the old g46vw? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Dell tend to use their own connector design.
-
Just an update for whoever is interested. I was at Best Buy today trying to get them to sell me the floor model. They refused though. They said they didn't have any in stock but they were suppose to be getting some more next week. They also dropped the awful news that they are still getting them through February! I don't know if I believe it but if it is true we might be in for a long wait for the G46VR
-
Yeah, I already gave up on the idea on a refresh model to be honest.

Hello Forum, I am a very happy new owner of the G46
I got lucky last month at best buy and was able to pick up one of these for $530, since then I added a Samsung 840 pro SSD (too chicken to dissemble this thing completely for the msata). Thanks to JwPwn1 for Dissemble video.
Quick review for anyone who care: First thing i noticed was this thing runs incredibly cool, you have to throw a lot at it to even start to hear a low fan going. Very fast from the beginning. Booted up in less than 26 sec, installed SSD ~10 sec now =D I have been reading lots of discussion with the screen, I don't think its too bad and I can always plug it into a external monitor so no problem for me. There is also that little bit of the space bar at the lower right corner that requires a bit more pressure if not it doesn't register, but not that big of a issue either. I just move my hand up 2 mm up when I type. I played with display models at BB, it didn't have this keyboard problem so YMMV.
To those interested in the new release of the G46, I can confirm that the G46VW-BSI5N06 does not get replace until February 2014. Had a nice chat with a BB manager and she showed me on her computer that date. -
Damn Feb 2014,
I'm assuming Broadwell will be out by then with maybe the 800m series GPU? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Broadwell is now 2015.

How do you set this under your post? -
Goto UserCP, and click on "Edit Signature" I hope that's what your talking about
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes it is the signature, you may need 5 posts before you can create one though.
You would not be using our text though I assume? -
I was also able to get one of these at best buy for around $500 bucks brand new. Love the performance, gpu temps seem to stay around 67-70c in crysis 3 and with window open in my room, and it's been about 100 degrees here in Sacramento. Winder time I should see mid sixties gpu temps. The i5 3230m seems very fast, no desire to upgrade it. I do notice cpu bottleneck every once in a great while in games...but when it happens I'm usually getting over 40 fps any way so that's ok. So still debating on whether to upgrade to i7. The performance hit of the i5 3230m isn't that bad.
Hitman china town is a good way to see cpu bottleneck with the i5 if you guys want to run some tests.
My complaint with this laptop is that I have the space bar issue unfortunately. I actually like the 1366x768 matte screen. It is so nice not to have a glossy screen. But really, a 5400rpm 750gb in a gaming laptop? Asus, really? Why? 5400rpm in a ROG branded gaming laptop makes zero sense. Wish it had a 7200rpm laptop.
Oh and also found out why these are selling so cheap at BB. They are discontinued apparently because the newer version will be coming out, I'm guessing with a better 700 series gpu. -
Thanks!
and no, I just wanted to add my computer specs =) -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Nice little setup
A refresh would be very nice. Though that's a guess rather than a confirmation. -
I was wondering why would bestbuy go crazy to 300 to 500 to get rid of these when they can easily offer it on ebay for 700+
