Depends how many they have in stock I suppose. Any Ivy based stuff will be deemed high risk and in need of shifting at this point.

but I don't see them throwing away other Ivy stuff like vaios and mac books for 50% - 70% off , plus Asus isn't exactly the bottom of the chain but like the others claimed they got it for 300-500? ? receipts or it didn't happen! I really want to pick up another 1 or 2 ... but so far all i found is open box 700.. which is still good deal but i can wait

Hi,
I am very close to buying this laptop. I am going to order it from HIDrevelotion and I can spend around $1600-1700. Can anyone tell me how would be the performance in terms of Temp (and possibility of throttling) if I decide to go with i7 3720 instead of 3630?
Thanks
Update:
To JwPwns, Yours has 3820QM in it. Right?! Can you please tell me the CPU temperature and frequency under the full load... -
To be honest SH_P getting the entry level processors like the i7 3630 would be more beneficial because this laptop is already old. I have the 3630 on mine because I didn't want an i5, I wanted an i7 and it's honestly good enough for everyday computing. If you do lots of 3D rendering or heavy CPU application that I can see why getting an upgraded processor would be good but it's still a waste of money imo. The GPU 660m GTX is decent but again this laptop is old because it's last gens technology as of Sept 6, 2013. Haswell processors are faster then the Ivy, plus you get the 700m series GPUs. If you can wait I'd wait until maybe if Asus decides to do a revision of the G46, speculation is not until next year February 2014. Overall I'm happy with my G46, I returned my AW 14 which had Ivy and 765m GPU because it was too loud. The G46 isnt even that loud at all on load. Just because you have 1.6-1.7k to spend doesn't mean you can spend it. It's best to just save it for something better. Spend the least you can spend on this laptop since it's old technology

Yeah so basically the cooling is godly in this laptop
-
Nivaku and JwPwns: Thanks for your detailed answers. Regarding Nivaku's comments, I completely agree with you. The thing is I can buy a laptop with new hardware and higher specs for the same price or even lower. However since I do lots of CPU intensive tasks on my laptop, I want something to be reliable in terms of temperature, cooling and noise emission. And this is the only model I have found with these consideration in mind.
BTW, New Haswell CPUs are not very different in terms of CPU power. for example 3720 can easily compete with 4700 (and even beat it in some benchmarks), The main improvment in Haswell series is the on board GPU, which is not important for me!
JwPwns: Your tests and pictures are Awesome! Could you please do another test for me: Since I will do rendering, I was wondering how is the CPU performance under "full CPU load" = All cores at 100%. You can replicate this by running wPrime for several minutes (10-15 mins should be enough!). I am probably asking for too much. but I really need to make sure about this, as I am changing my current laptop for bad cooling system!! -
recently I put together some 150gb time lapse video with this laptop and it wasn't that hot after few hours, and the cpu never actually went to 100% for anything.. other than the benchmarks, don't worry about the cooling it's  plus 3720 is rated lower watts, 3820 97% like the above pictures is only at 80c my friend you are fine
-
Thanks again JwPwns. Regarding buying it now or later, I really need to get a new laptop now as my current laptop is so old. Besides, I am not a heavy gamer, Starcraft II would probably be the heaviest game I will play (if I time allows...!).
Another question: I couldn't find Win 7 drivers on Asus website. Are Win 8 drivers compatible with Win 7? Is there any special instruction for installing windows 7 on msata SSD (on a configuration with one msata SSD and one HDD)?
Would everything be fully functional on Win 7 as they are in Win 8?
And yet another question! : which one do you suggest: Samsung PM841 256GB mSATA SSD or Crucial M4 SATA3 6Gb/s 256GB mSATA SSD ?
Cheers -
If you can I'd skin the whole msata ssd and just get the 256GB Samsung 840 Pro. From my understanding the msata ssd is only for caching and not for storage. I could be wrong, can someone please correct me and tell me the correct thing?
-
I highly suggest the G750 over thisunless you are a student like me need to carry this everywhere with you then by all means, go for it! or wait 2 months n get the newest 700m / haswell it's really worth the wait, heck if money allows i would get g750 then the upgraded version of G46
-
Is it possible to have Win 7 on mSata and still use as a storage drive (Drive C? Is it neccesary to keep Win 8? I have the following configuration is my mind. is it possible: Drive C: = 256GB msata (win 7 installed on this drive and still be able to use it in windows normally) Drive D: = data drive HDD.
Do you have any problem using Win 7? any unrecognized (semi-recognized!) hardware...??
Yes I am a studentSo G750 is a wish at best!
Apparently new version of G46 would not be available until the next Feb... what do you mean by two months? -
the link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY7dQ3pzfz8
it is possible to have win 7 on msata and use it for storage, i think it's better to keep win 8 so it will be less of a hassle when you decide to switch, plus it only eats up 80gb of the original hdd. So your config would be msata = C for win 7 hdd = D for win 8, select default boot C and you can select which drive to store what files ect... i have all my programs and games on the msata and all my pictures + music on hdd.
from what I saw in the asus forum they already came out with a new one with 760m but I'm not sure where you can grab one from u.s, so i assume within 2 months since bestbuy is clearing out their old version of G46 -
Thanks for your reply...
What about this one: " Do you have any problem using Win 7? any unrecognized (semi-recognized!) hardware...?? " -

Do the jump to windows 8, just put a start menu mod on and you are good to go
Save all the unnecessary hassle.

Still no haswell and nvidia 7 series gpu version of g46??
-
Does anyone have any clue as to when the new haswell and 7 series m-gpu will be released in the 14"? My wife has the G46VW and I love it, and would easily take it over any other manufacturers mostly because of the cooling, but I want the newer hardware found in the Alienware 14 and Sager 7330.

G46's still running great, but random question; in my upgrade of mSATA I reformatted the HDD and lost the factory restore image... Trying to reinstall Windows 8 using the embedded key, and have no idea where to get install media? Seems iso's for 8 are near impossible to find. I've only got install media for Windows 8 Pro from a previous "upgrade" usb unfortunately, and can't get it to install anything but Pro regardless of ei.cfg settings, so it must just be a pro version.... it was from last year when they were offering the dirt cheap upgrades for 8 Pro for existing 7 users.
Anybody have a legit source for a plain vanilla non-pro Windows 8 iso? Or have any suggestions? Obviously I should have made recovery discs but long past that point ha
As a side note, the MSI GT60's thread has the recovery disc images posted for this purpose.... any posted online for the G46?
Thanks! -
Hey guys
I contacted ASUS in regards to the rumored "G46VR" and this is the response I was given:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for contacting ASUS Service Care.
My name is Lance and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience in using our product.
Unfortunately, our center has not receipt the notice about when the NEW G 4X series will be released.
For my personal opinion, I searched G46VR in google, and I am told that the G46VR will come in I7-3630QM... not haswell CPU.
If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to let us know. We will be more than happy to assist you.
Thanks!
Wish you a nice day!
Best regards,
Lance

Seems it won't be coming out for a while with this response.... :/ -

I think that installer lets you download the ISO, just note I think it's still broken and needs to be fixed to allow UEFI booting and installation. -
Anyway, I just reinstalled 8 Pro using the Pro key and all is well.... was wanting to save it but wasn't worth the continued hassle. Sold the G46 to my buddy and was getting it all setup for him. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I know it's weird that microsoft have gone hardcore on cutting out ISO downloads when their products are key based. Those who are pirating wont even use a standard ISO :/
-
you can get a "Windows 8 NON-PRO OEM 64 Bit For System Builders" iso somewhere i just don't remember where....
once you get it then it is easy to make a bootable usb drive. but with that iso you have to have a legitimate key it won't work otherwise.

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well that's fine since you do have one with the machine.

Hey guys,
I wanted to buy this laptop sooner, but I had some paperworks to do for it and now apparently they run out of the brand-new ones. I really like the cooling system and performance on this machine, So I am considering buying factory-refurbished one. What do you think? should I go for it.? I have never bought FR models. is there any think I should be aware of?
Thanks -
Thanks in advance. -

Anyone with a core i7 in this laptop playing the BF4 beta?
I want to know if upgrading my i5 to an i7 will help me with BF4 i get 40 dipping into the 30's on medium with high textures...
I want to know what the bottleneck is here if i swap out my cpu for an i7 how much will my frames improve?
What frames are you i7 people getting? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
What's your GPU load? BF4 can load all cores on a quad core with HT but if your GPU is already loaded fully it wont help much.
-
Is this laptop out?
-
Yes, it's been out for awhile actually. You might still be able to find it, but if I were you I'd just wait for a second revision (assuming they are making it)
-
Oh I meant the new revision oops lol
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No, not yet got any details on one.
-
Does anybody know if every G46VW came with Thunderbolt or did some only come with a Display Port that only did video out? I am looking for them on eBay but can't tell which has thunderbolt. Thanks!
I am going to get one seeing as the refreshed version may not even come to light. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
There looks to be the pads for a thunderbolt controller on the motherboard but no known versions ever populated it.
-
Is anyone elses 660m not boosting???
When ever i run a game at 99% load it never goes over 835mhz and im on high performance battery preset.
It should be going to 950mhz but its not?
Furmark says its being throttled.. Why. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Furmark will throttle, when you say high performance battery preset do you mean power plan? Or are you trying to run it on battery?
Any chance of posting up a sensor tab screenshot from GPU-Z or MSI afterburner tracking the frequency? -
I might even have him set my core to 1100mhz and let me OC memory manually.
Edit: apparently its a driver issue.. :/ I want my BF4 drivers ugh! -
EDIT: there is a Prema mod for this laptop?? huh?? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
They do all throttle when they detect furmark I believe.
-
Not that it matters but I purchased a 1080P IPS panel for the G46VW (Old Model) I'm going to let hidevolution do the installation, even have the upgraded 6300 wifi card. I called them and asked them if the 1080P panel is IPS and he said yes, it's basically the same panel on the AW 14. I really hope Asus does a revision on the G46
Edit*
I seem to cannot find the post about the smaller PSU for this unit, does anyone know a compatible PSU that's smaller then the original? -
I'm sure many people on the forum would be interested in upgrading as well. -
I'm in desperate need for a new computer for the BF4. Since G750 is way to big, an updated G46 would be absolutely perfect.
Common Asus, throw in an i7 haswell, a 760M and a decent panel (am I allowed to dream for an IPS?) and I'm sold. I'll just put 16GB of RAM and a 840 pro in it and sit tight for the next 3 years. -

Both AMD and nvidia detect furmark running and implement internal controls I believe.
