You can.. You just need to get a screwdriver that will open it up its not the end of the world its the same thing with the alienware m14![]()

This is why I am sad my local b&q closed down, I could walk there in a few minutes and have the odd screw driver I needed. Compared to the cost of an ssd it's not too bad.
At least it is not glued in place.... -
also cant post on my main account dunno why.. :/ -
Well I thought you said it will need a special type of screwdriver, so now you are saying it uses the common type of screw and can be opened with the common Phillips or flat head screwdriver then?
Can you also take pictures of the bottom if you have time? Thanks -
I ment that you need a special screwdriver sorry but yes ill take a picture of the bottom today -
Going to be following this thread, might be looking into replacing my XPS 15z with something else and considered this one as an option.
-
Even with the not so great screen res the screen looks great from the pics, can you run FURMARK and post what the temps were under full load? And are the fans loud when under full load? I wanna see if the ASUS colling system in this smaller laptop is good like it's bigger brothers.
They do have in stock at my BB -
Resolution: 1280x720 (FS) - AA:0 samples
FPS: min:18, max:19, avg:17 - OPTIONS: DynBkg
dont really care about the FPS the laptop is dead silent when running furmark its amazing.. my Envy 14 would be so F'ing loud right now lol.
so if your looking to max out any game atm and keeping it quiet while doing it.. Definitely pick this sucker up im loving it so far even with windows 8 and the screen.you wont be sorry for a portable stealth sleeper of a laptop. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well nvidia chips throttle themselves in furmark these days, but good to hear they have noise under control, a very interesting machine, now if only it used MXM..... But this is Asus we are talking about.
-
Those are great temps and good to hear its relatively quiet under full load, one thing I hate is a loud laptop, I know it comes with the territory ( gaming laptops ) but I like the fact the fans are not too loud. Is the screen matte or glossy? BB doesn't say.
Thanks. -
Matte and I love how silent it is -
So i visited my local best buy which had the one listed on their site: Asus 14" Laptop 8GB Memory 750GB Hard Drive G46VW-BHI5N43 - Best Buy
Question is, are these available to pick-up with the i7 in it?
I currently have a Dell XPS 15z.
Intel Core i7 - 2640m @ 2.80GHz
8.00gb Memory
64 Bit
720gb hard drive (and I have replaced the optical drive with an SSD)
Nvidia GeForce GT 525M
Do you guys think I'll see THAT much of a difference with the G46VW?
Is it worth the "upgrade" I'm out of warranty on this laptop and figured it's about time to pickup something new. I've had replacement laptops since I bought the first XPS 4 years ago.
Worst comes to worst I can get squaretrade warranty on the Asus. -

i use it for both gaming and regular use at school for example.
Also it seems like Best Buy is currently the only place selling it. Hmm -
I think he meant gaming wise it will blow away your DELL but regular use and school it will more or less be the same minus the optical drive of course.
So overall all it should be a huge improvement for gaming but just equal when it comes everyday use and school. -
-
So anyone pop the bottom cover for this lappy yet? I want to see if it is possible to upgrade the ram, hdd with ssd and replace that crappy atheros wireless card with intel centrino one.
-
-
o.o -
Does it also comes with Bluetooth? Intel centrino 2230 should come with bluetooth 4.0 but bestbuy is listing g46 as no bluetooth.
Can you double check pls -
And yep bluetooth 4.0 i have it disabled for battery and i dont use bluetooth that much..
got 4 hours of battery life at quarter brightness web browsing in class today soim so happy with this machine!
RESOLUTION isnt everything people!! -
So bestbuy version of G46 has intel card and bluetooth 4.0? -
Seems like it.
I'm debating just throwing my laptop for sale and picking this up -
Hey Raptor another question, I know you said the screen is matte, is it grainy or fuzzy or is it clear? How is the color when viewing photos and watching videos? Is it vivid or does it lack color or gamut like the m14x screen?
Thanks -
Well its clear to me.. Wasnt clear when I first started looking at it because my eyes were spoiled with a Envy 14's radiance display but now that ive adjusted colors are great! (Not eye popping like omg the colors..) But seriously when playing far cry 3 maxxed out it looks amazingsame with just web browsing its fine but the games are where it shines to me at least.
I say you guys need to man up and buy this amazing machine because im very happy with what I purchased so far -
I'm worried because I had the m14x r2 900p screen and the colors when viewing photos and watching movies looks very dull like it had no vividness or whatsoever and you would think the glossy display would help bring out more color but it was so dull like the color looks faded.
Can you honestly say viewing photos or watching videos have good decent colors where it does not look dull and faded on G46? -
you have until january 29th to return it because of christmas so why dont you buy it and make your own opinions on the display and laptop in general.. if you dont like it return it and get your money back and keep looking for your dream machine
Colors look fine to me.. -
Hey Raptor5150, could you take a picture of the bottom and possibly what the screws look like? Thanks!
-
I am so hyped to get this machine but just a few things bother me.
How soon will they come up with the i7 version any word on it? What about optical drives I read in Best Buys website that it is not included.
Also how heavy is this machine with the power brick, how big is that?
I just canceled my plans to get a lenovo 480 because I saw this.
Thanks guys -
If I remember right, the ASUS G46VW does not come with an optical drive. You would need to get your own if that is so.
The laptop itself is 5.5 lbs so I would assume the brick adds about another pound or so. -
I also notice this has color options and settings for the screen you can change via the stock asus app pretty neat if your looking for a specific look ^_^ -
Could you take a picture of the power brick
-
here you guys goBRICK AND BOTTOM! Needy fukers
jk jk <3
scuse the cup on the ground cat knocked it over as i took the pic -.- thank god it was empty -
Thanks for the pictures
It looks like it needs special screwdrivers to open?
Also someone mentioned that to switch out the hdd to ssd it needs a special screwdriver. What kind is it?
Is the i5 CPU upgradable to i7? As long as the slots are the same it "should" work right? -
It is probably the torx screw from t1-t9 and if it is then we can use the husky torx screwdriver sold from Home Depot or lowes.
husky torx screwdriver - Google Search -
So the Asus rep over at the ROG forums says that the HDD and mSATA aren't upgradeable. Bummer.
-
They are upgradable, but probably not easy to get to.
-
So the screws on the back are T8 torx. there is 3 long ones, and 4 short ones. Then there is one phillips under a small rubber piece that you pull up to get to the memory. Then 2 small Phillips ones, there.
Figured out back cover, black tape on keyboard connection i guess for warranty purposes. -
Damn, was it hard to take off? Looks like too much of a hassle for me just to be able to upgrade some of the hardware. Thanks for having the balls to do this though!
-
Very nice pics coder!! So that means I can use my Husky Torx Screwdriver since i have t1-t8 on that baby. To upgrade the HDD to SSD, all i have to do is remove the bottom panel right and i don't have to remove the keyboard or anything?
Oh one more thing coder, can you double check if the wireless card is an intel centrino one or atheros and if the wireless card is upgradable after we remove the 7 torx screws?
Thanks -
Basically, you remove all the T-8 Torx you see under the laptop. 4 on bottom, 3 on top, then still looking at its back, there are 4 rubber feet total, the two closer to the vents (and on the side where the long torx are) come off. Gently pry them with your finger or something else and they come off. Might be a bit of a pita though, There are 2 more screws there, those are small phillips. Remove those.
Then flip the laptop grab the top cover and it should start to come off with ease but dont pull too hard as there is a connector of some sort there, Disconnect that and put the cover to the side.
There are then 2 more phillips holding the "top cover" i guess you can call it. This is also what the keyboard sits in.
After you remove those, you basically have the gently "pop" it off. Pry it a bit on one side and work your way to the bottom, then start the other side and work your way to the bottom. I used card to kind of slide it and it helped pop the bottom.
After that, very slowly lift it, and you have the keyboard connector that is taped with black tape seen in pics, to disconnect it you basically have to remove the tape. I assume its either for protection or "HAHAHA YOUR WARRANTY IS VOIDED" purposes.
you can pull it a bit towards you and it will slide out a bit more giving you a wee bit more space as seen in some pics.
I didn't mess around with removing the hard drive but it looks rather simple and looks doable without removing/disconnecting the top cover (removing the tape)
I will check the part # of the hard drive to see if its a normal laptop size hard drive or something else and since i put everything back together now, i will check the part # in device manager for the wireless card aswell. -
Almost forgot, here is some shots of the brick.
Dimensions are about 6.5 x 3 x 1
I can do pictures of the whole laptop from each side if you guys want, only if requested since some pics are visible online already. -
Thanks for info again coder, but you forgot to answer my last question which is the wireless card. Does it come with the intel wireless card and bluetooth? You got this from BestBuy right?
-
Which mouse is that? How do you like it?
-
I just checked: It's a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230, bluetooth is here.
Hard drive's model #: st750lm022 hn-m750mbb
-
Nice pics! Definitely looks like a standard 2.5" HDD. I'm pretty sure that's normal height too (not the slim kind).
I can't find the mSATA SSD slot from these pics though. Anyone know where that might be? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
+rep for the picutures, is that BGA pad just the reverse of the GPU on the left or is it for an unknown chip? Curious.
-
There seems to be enough space there.
I might be swapping hard drives though. This one is 5400rpm for some reason. I have same capacity but 7400rpm. Need to compare the wireless card against a centrino 6230 and see which is better. -
Hey what the hell.. What kind of power brick is that..Doesnt look like mine at all.
Now i want that one.
And what about the screen.. does it look upgradeable? -
I HATE windows 8 though, worst thing to happen. Need to get windows 7 installed or at least get rid of all that win 8 crap
