I cant really tell from the screenshots but my assumption woukd be that your seeing comprssion artifacts. dark scenes brightened up will reveal the artifacts a good bit since dark areas are usually compressed heavily. try to tilt the screen back a little. or do the windows screen calibration. that may help a little.

I already made sure it wasn't a tilt issue. Calibrating my screen helped a little, but what I call pixelation and you call compression is still very much there.

It likely is due to the 6 bit colour of the panel (like most mobile panels).

Is there anything I can do to fix it or am I stuck?

OK. I am now ready to buy and am giving myself 24 hours to decide between two models that people on this forum will be familiar with. One is that Asus G750JS-RS71. That variation comes with 12 gig of memory, a 750gig 7200 rpm hard drive, a GTX870m with 3 gig of DDR5 memory, and of ccourse the 17 inch non-touch, anti glare screen (that seems to get good reviews). The other is an Asus n550jk-DB74T. That variation has the same CPU and same verison of Windows, but has 16 gig of memory, a 256gig SSD, and the GTX 850m graphics card with 2 gig of ddr3 memory, and of course the 15 inch touch screen that I believe gets pretty much rave review. Both are esactly the same price. Your thoughts?

I realize it depends on usage. I'm looking for a general purpose laptop that I can use for "normal" day to day tasks, watching dvds or streaming videos, and occasionally game playing. I'm not looking for a dedicated gaming laptop or in need of the best, but of course the ability to do that would be a nice benefit. My current laptop is 6 years old but it's a nice Dell and only about 5 pounds. I think I might like having the bigger 17 inch screen, but the added 5 pounds or so might be a killer. I don't plan to travel with it, but even just putting it on my lap for an hour or two might wear on my if it's a 10 pounder instead of a 5 pounder. And I know that anti-glare screens are popular, but for the life of me I don't know why unless you're using one outdoors. As a videophile I appreciate really good video and any "anti-glare" capability by its very nature reduces the quality of the video. Then there's the presence of left and right mouse buttons on the 750. Seems like a little deal, but it's what I'm used to andI hear bad things about the touch pads without dedicated L and R buttons.

That's a bit of a ramble but I wanted you to know my considerations so you can better give me any advice you might have.

Those machines provide two entirely different roles, it comes down to portability vs performance for you. It's not so bad as the NP9570 lol, so weight on your lap is not the issue. It's carrying it around in a bag and if that's a problem for you.

I just wanted to thank everyone here who shared helpful information or gave me some advice. After a few weeks of research i finally ordered a new laptop today. At least i made an informed choice. I hope it turns out to be a good one.

Sorry in my relief that I had finally made up my mind I failed to do the most important thing. I ordered the N550KJ-DB74T (that's the one with 16 gm ram and the 256 gb SSD already installed). Both that one and the G750js-RS71 are on sale for exactly the same price ($1299) at costco.

How strange. The N550JK I ordered arrived today. Or so I thought. When I opened the box I found that they had sent me the G750JS-RS71. I even went back and checked my order to make sure I ordered the right one. I did, but they sent the wrong one. Maybe this is fate stepping in and telling me I ordered the wrong one??? So do I send it back and have them send me the N550, or just go ahead and keep this one. I really wanted the SSD that came in the N550 Maybe I need to go back and read the helpful hints people gave me here to see whether I can just add one to the G750. Of course that means more money. Can I just buy a 128gb SSD and add it in addition to the 750 gb HDD it comes with? (After moving over the operating system to the SSD)? I think those smaller ones are pretty cheap.

Yes adding SSD 256 GB seems to be the sweet spot. You can save more money by getting on 1 generation back Samsung 840 or EVO. etc. Use Macrium Reflect to redeploy to different hardware feature to clone you OS to you new SSD. Then make your Hard drive not active format it and use it for data and less used programs. Don't forget to go in the BIOS and change your boot order to boot the new SSD. I usually shut down and remove the old hard drive then boot up the SSD. connect the old hard drive VIA USB and format it as a Logical drive. Reinstall and use it for your data.

If I do what you wrote above (bolded) do I still have to change the BIOS? In other words if I buy a kit and clone my HDD to the SDD and then replace it into the same location where the HDD (with the HDD remvoved from the machien at this point) is located can I then simply turn on the laptop and have everything run OK, or do I have to make a BIOS change? Once I get it up and running on the SSD can I then use the cable that came with the SSD to connect the old HDD and completely reformat thus removing everything that came on it. And then can I just plug it into the second slot and have the system automatically recognize it and start using it, or do I have to make a BIOS change when I put the HDD back into the second slot?

Sorry, it seems from reading this thread that most people know stuff like that, but I don't. So I appreciate all the help and advice.

Yes I would go into the BIOS and set USB as first boot as you will need to boot the USB MR to do the Clone. But your right that you shouldn't need to change boot order other than that. Probably now your boot order is DVD then your hard drive then Network so just set USB to boot first while you making the switch out of drive if you leave your USB key out it should boot your new SSD.
Did I mention you need to create the factory restore disk set before doing any of this. You may need it later and for sure if you sell the notebook later on.
Your restore partition should copy over to your SSD so you will still have that to work with unless you want the space it is taking up.

Hi there. I posted this over at the RoG forums, but I didn't get any responses, so I thought I'd try to get some insight here.

I currently have the G74SX (a very old model of the G series) that I purchased back in 2011/2012. I'm thinking about upgrading to the newer model -probably the G750JZ, since it has the best Gfx card - in a few months.

I'd like to know how the screen quality is for users with this laptop, or any of the versions of the G750J* with the new 800Ms.

I'm very concerned because I've seen numerous reports/complaints of the screen on these laptops to be "bad". I see alot of users report issues of seeing horizontal or vertical lines in the screens on dark background. This is worrying to me because the G74 had the same issue years ago (luckily I was persistent with Nvidia and they fixed the issue in a driver update.)

I know the screen is Matte, which will be different than my glossy screen, so I would like to know what you all think of your models...and if you have experienced the vertical lines issue and if there was a fix.

    I would appreciate any feedback.

    Thanks.

@Meaker thanks for the response. I was checking out Xoticpc and they have a glossy screen upgrade but it's a little too expensive of an upgrade for me.

I'd rather buy a glossy screen and replace the default screen or have someone do it for me.

With that said, has any G750 owner here bought a glossy screen to replace the default matte screen? How was it, and what model was the notebook and model of the screen?

It does take some time to do and test. Not all matte displays are created equal ;) You could always phone and see if a specific part could be ordered for you if you really had your heart set on something specific.

mine has visible lines but it's only noticable on solid light backgrounds. the only time I notice it is when I'm browsing. gaming and movies have too much movement for the lines to have any affect for me. the screen's not perfect, but a helluva lot better than I expected. the laptop before this one wa the q550lf, older bro of the n550jk... before that msi gt780dxr and the g750's screen seems to be a bit better. of course I haven't seen my 780 in over a year, lol.

that's good to know... I just came back into possession of my old 780. gpu died and the guy I sild it too would rather put the money into a new laptop instead of fixing the old one.

off to ebay I go and see if I can find a new card and sell it again. I'll give the guy a cut though, he gsve it back for free.

or I'll possibly gut the laptop and sell for parts.

    Hey Guys

I want a gaming laptop to play games like Rome 2, on high spec, but in truth I don't fully understand the in's and out of laptops. I was considering a desktop but I am on the move a lot, and therefore going the laptop route. Is the attached amazon deal a good deal, it already has a large % off when I first looked at the laptop a couple of weeks ago. Or should I wait till after Xmas?

You should wait until Asus comes out with their new G751 laptop. I'm pretty sure it will be really soon and it will come with the new 970m/980m cards

As mentioned in your other thread, the vBIOS will allow a bigger OC... You have to use NVIDIA Inspector or EVGA Precision X (Mr Fox recommends this and I would too) to OC beyond the limits which have now been removed :)

Hello all, I am a new owner of the G750JM. Grabbed a pretty good deal during black Friday!

Anyways has anyone tried to replace the HDD with an SSD? I backed up the recovery partition using a USB drive and restored Windows 8.1 on a 120gb Intel SSD which gave me a single 90gb C:/drive at first and then a 110gb C:/drive after I deleted the 20gb recovery partition from the new SSD.
However, I only have 65.1gb left of storage from the 110gb!! Does Win8.1 really occupy 45gb?? I was under the impression OS is about 20gb. And system updates surely can't take up 20gb can they??

sen5e, you used Backtracker for the Asus OS restore to the SSD, and already deleted the recovery partition. Because your SSD is small Asus didn't split off another mounted partition, so you have deleted and absorbed the recovery partition so that is all you can do to recovery space from the partitions.

The OS includes files that can be deleted after install, use ccleaner to recover the space. Be sure and select all the options available (except passwords, and whatever else doesn't make sense for you):

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

And, download/install the additional cleanup support given by the CC Enchancer plugin:

    https://singularlabs.com/software/ccenhancer/

ccenhancer includes lots of program clean up profiles. You will need to wait a few more seconds when starting up ccleaner for all those profiles to load.

I also turn off pagefile, set it to 0 size, you can do that too for memory sizes 8GB and over, as long as you don't get within 30% of the end of RAM.

    no pagefile.JPG

And, I turn off Fast Startup (hiberboot) and Hibernation to save 32GB on C partition. I already did this, so my Windows dialogs don't show thos settings as available - I also used an Admin cmd shell to run: powercfg -h off

First get into the Power Options control panel and select Choose what the Power Buttons do...
    Step-1.jpg

    Select settings that aren't available
    Step-2.jpg

Then deselect the Fast Startup (Full Shutdown), and deselect Hibernation.
    Step-3.jpg

Here is the origin of the above images:
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Between the clean up and disabling those features you should be at maximum available space :)

But, that still won't leave a lot of room, so make sure you move as many application / music / media installs to the D: 2nd drive and keep whatever space you can for game installs - SSD's have a lot less lag when loading data during games.

I really appreciate all your help. Thanks for your patience too my friend. I never participated in laptop forums before so I'm still getting a hang of it. Next time I'll post more detailed questions with results etc as you suggested so that others can benefit from it! And that info about unsplitting the drives will come in handy soon, as I plan to pop my original hdd back in to use as secondary storage drive. (probablly I'll do it later tonight!) And I'll try to disable hibernation and pagefile to see how much space it frees up. I was originally going to use the original primary OS hdd as secondary drive and wipe the partitions and OS off it after restoring to SDD because the laptop was advertised to have the secondary hdd as 5400rpm and primary as 7200rpm so I was going to use the faster one and put the slower one away on my shelf but when I poped them out they both seem to be 7200rpm on the label so I'll keep the primary on the shelf as a backup and not wipe it and just use the empty one.

That sounds like the best plan with the HDDs, with a decent size of SSD a slightly slower HDD for secondary storage would not have made a large impact though most likely.

That's true that for secondary drive it probablly wouldn't make much of a noticeable difference. I'll see how things go with the 120gb ssd and if it'll be enough space. I still didn't get a chance to try to turn off vm and hibernation as I ended up at a cottage. I'll post here once I try and update how much space I was able to free up. Dang, I regret not buying a 240gb ssd during black Friday.
Hey hmscott what did you mean by "as long as you don't get within 30% of the end of RAM."

Guys I made a backup of win8.1 using Asus backtracker for my g750. I also own a g551 and I'm wondering if I can use the same backup I made from g750 to restore to g551 or do I need to do it seperately? I made the backup of the g551 on a separate USB drive just in case but it's my other only 16gb USB drive and wouldn't mind using it for other sorts of storage. Can anyone advise me on this? Also the two backups are different sizes, can anyone explain as to why that is?
Also what's the app/driver backup for? Is it nesescary? In the instructions it says to use wiz install to restore the drivers/apps on new hdd but when I launch it, it says all apps are already installed, so what's the point of it?

They are different models so may have different included driver sets and OS versions.

They will include a factory set of drivers both may be 8.1 but they may be slightly different releases version wise.

To back each system up separately. The saves will be different on each model.

Could you please elaborate about this app/driver backup feature in backtracker? I'm still confused as to what it's for. As I mentioned in my previous post, in the instructions it says to use wiz install to restore the drivers/apps on new hdd but when I launch it, it says all apps are already installed, so what's the point of it?

The app/driver backup would be for a clean install IIRC.

That's what backup factory image is for. I am asking about the purpose of asus driver/app. It's an extra like 4 gb and when I tested the restore recovery, all the drivers seemed to be already installed so I don't understand what's the purpose of it and if I need to actually have a backup of it, as it's making me use an additional usb stick that I could be using to backup other data that I need such as documents, videos, music files etc.
