I got latest bios version which is 303. The problem existed from the beginning even before I installed any new software. I got no problem with setting laptop fan speed before gaming to 100% in which both fans spin at maximum RPM, but I'm sure this isn't how it is supposed to work and fans should fire up automatically.
Looks like I'm gonna deal with this issue as it is. :( :(

Hi.i wanted to buy g752vs but i saw some backlight bleed issues on it.so i decided to buy gl702vs but now in this forum i saw some heatting issues and also backlight bleed!!!!i dont know about underclocking and i have 2 questions:
1-with disable turbo boost for cpu temp will be reasonable?(i want to play games like battlefield4 or rainbow 6 siege at least 1hour)
2-is there any backlight bleed issue for this spec of it?
    I7 7700hq - 16gb ddr4 - 1tb 7200rpm + 256gb ssd - nvidia gtx 1070 8gb - full hd 120hz

Hi. I got a brandnew GL502VSK but when playing demanding games like The Witcher 3, I recognized my CPU and GPU temps are considerably high, about 95C for CPU and 87C for GPU. I undervolted my CPU by -145 mV and set the GPU to use at most 850 mV @ 1823 MHz (default was 1050 mV). By doing these I managed to lower my temps significantly. Now at max fan speed my temps never exceed 74C for CPU and 70C for GPU.

Almost every laptop has backlight bleeding more or less. In my case I can only notice it when my screen is completely black. In every day usage and gaming it's totally ignorable. I hope these experiences which I had are going to work for you.

Thanks for the headsup - installed. An odd thing I've noticed with this BIOS is that the CPU and GPU fan speeds are no longer showing in the likes of HWMonitor or other such programs, strange

Same here. However, Notebook Fan Control can still read and modify the fan speeds.

    Hi everyone!

I'm quite new on the forum. I've owned a gl502vsk for a few months now, and I wanted to upgrade the RAM and SSD taking advantage of black friday.

So, the SSD is already sorted out, but the RAM I'm still in doubt. First, the speed. When I run HWINFO, CPU-Z or Speccy I get speeds of ~1200MHz, which to me doesn't make sense since the least it should be is 2133MHz right? I'm sure I'm missing something here.

And, secondly, both in CPU-Z and Speccy, I get a reading of 4 ram slots. 1 populated, 3 empty. However, in any spec sheet I've found for the 502vsk I can only see 2 slots. Is it possible that I've actually got 4?

Thanks a lot for your time guys, and keep it up! I lurked this thread for weeks before buying and you're incredibly helpful :D

    Hi,

DDR stands for Double Data Rate. So what you see in speccy should be doubled
I'm not quite sure how this works, but you can look this up on Google. More info here

TLDR: Buy DDR-4 Sodimm 2166 MHz

These laptopts have 2 slots. The Task manager shows 4 slots for me, too. Maybe it's because the board has a controller which could handle 4 slots, but Asus only built 2 in it.

Thanks a bunch for the answers. I really appreciate it! I guess you mean 2133MHz, right? I thought 2166 was not an option for DDR4 RAM. Just double checking it's a typo and I'm not buying the wrong thing haha

I have another little doubt. My laptop has 8 gigs right now installed. I was thinking about buying a 16 gigs stick and use both the 8 gigs included and the 16 I'll buy together. So, using different sized RAM sticks... I've heard everything from "there's no issue" to "it'll completely kill your CPU performance"... Any insight on that? I want to be able to upgrade to 32 down the line, so I'll buy the 16 gigs anyways, but if I can have 24 gigs for a few months until the RAM prices go back to a reasonable amount, without screwing anything, it'd be great.

Yep, it was a typo :)

As far as I know dual channel won't work with different stick sizes. Your memories will operate in single channel mode, just like it does now.

When I upgraded my ram to 16 gigs, my goal was to aim for dual channel. In some games it doesn't matter, but it generally means more fps.

So, if I add the 16 gigs they'll just work in single channel like the 8 gigs are doing right now?
Doesn't sound like a huge deal until I buy the second 16 gig stick, I'll wait to see if someone else has any insight on it but I think I'll go for it.

Thanks a bunch again for your time!!

so i have been digging through this thread and may have missed the answer, i apologize about that.

Has anyone seen any issues upgrading their M.2 SSD on the gl702vm since at least BIOS version 305, i just upgraded to 306 and its new enough that i doubt people have anything to report there.
From digging around it sounds like this system uses M Key for the ssd and i shouldn't have any problem with PCIe 3.0 x4 and or NVME, but i came across a drive that was PCIe 3.1 x4 and was wondering if it should be backwards compatible. Lastly that appears to take care of the hardware side of this, is there anything tricky with either cloning my current drive which is M.2 SATA or do i need to perform a fresh install due to compatibility issues. I know many people prefer a fresh install, but if i can avoid it and still get all the capabilities from the new drive design would be simplest for me, thanks.

I never had issues with M.2 SSDs on the GL702VM on any bios (including 306) , although I'm using a sata m2 ssd.

yeah, i knew i wouldn't have any issue with the SATA version, but i am hoping to take better advantage of what my system is capable of by using the PCIe/NVME version of M.2 instead

Hello. I am looking into the GL502VS and have two questions regarding it:

    1. How easy is it to open the laptop to clean the fans? (Detailed reply appreciated. Namely the approximate number of screws, type of screws, and necessity to remove certain parts to access the interior)
    2. Would doing so void the warranty?

    Thanks.

That's not exactly correct. The first 8gb of the 16gb stick will run dual channel with the 8gb stick. The last 8gb of the 16gb stick will run in single channel. This is called flex mode. I'm doing this myself right now. Ram in bios and HWinfo showing up as dual channel with speeds to match.

it's easy. remove all the screws.
stick your nail under a corner of the cover and pull up.
Then run an old credit card the rest of the way, and the whole cover will pop off.

I recently purchased the ASUS GL702VM-BHI7N09 laptop from Best Buy, and wanted to know:
    Laptop link: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-1...ack-anodized-aluminum/5580042.p?skuId=5580042

    1) Where do I check for official BIOS updates to the GL702VM-BHI7N09 laptop?

    2) How do I backup the existing the GL702VM-BHI7N09 BIOS on this laptop?

    3) How would I flash the GL702VM-BHI7N09 BIOS to the latest version?

    4) After I flash this BIOS to the latest version, is it possible to downgrade the BIOS in the future?

    1) Here
    2) You don't have to backup your version. It is available on the support site.
    3) Using the flash tool utility on the link above
    4) Yes. You just download an older version and flash it with the utility.

Don't worry. It's a safe and well guided process. It's hard to mess up.

I have tried both https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MCZ4QTK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and the samsung 960 evo nvme drives. They both kick ass !!! Price wise I'd recommend the BPX. More bang for your buck.

Hello everyone, could have sworn I couldnt find an NBR owners lounge for the 702VMs last year when I got my open box for a steal from bestbuy. I've been running a custom profile from the ROG forum underclocking both cpu and graphics card. Love this laptop, but hate the anemic cooling.

I have purchased a replacement backplate for $60 and have been slightly modifying it over time to see what increases performance more than others. Immediately I've noticed height is important more than anything. The dinky little blowers have to fight to get air from the bottom and push it out the back. I really wish ASUS would have done side air intakes similar to what MSI has done with their ghosts and many of their previous series. I will be posting pictures soon of the mod and hope to not have to do what I did with my 10 year old MSI 1722 for better cooling (chop the bottom plate open, and glued an 80mm fan grille in below the blower for max unrestricted airflow.

    Notebook Fan Control:
Ive noticed something interesting for the 3rd smaller blower in the center. It seems to be used for emergency cooling when the system gets overloaded and even then refuses to spin up to full chooch (probably for fear of accoustings, seriously gtfo fan whiners use some headphones when you game instead of letting your computers hardware kill itself).

I will say that forcing everything to 100% duty before gaming will help with temps about as much as it helps with raising the laptop.

Ive since bought a pack of felt furniture disks designed to keep hardwood floors from getting damaged when moving furniture, and doubled them up for about 1/2" (12.5mm) of clearance on the back of the machine. I first noticed the difference, and you can try it too by getting something like two flash drives and stacking them below each of the feet on the rear of the machine. You'' spot a difference.

Biggest problem is, and I agree with others who have said basically the same, shared cooling for cpu/gpu is a terrible idea with high performance machines. ASUS' engineers need to reconcile with how foolish an idea this is and address it in the future iterations. In any case, this machine definitely got a 3yr warranty as I dont expect the gpu to survive even with heavy undervolting. (pessimistic since the 7970m died in my P170EM)

i have my laptop on foam blocks. My old Lenovo came with these foam stands, which raise the back 3 inches.

I can feel the air being sucked from underneath, like a wind tunnel.

I'm curious to see those pictures and hear about your results. With the undervolt and custom GPU profiles, I can get things down to 80C but it still worries me for the overall longevity of the laptop. I was also considering buying a spare bottom plate and modifying it so I'd love to see the progress you've made since we're in the same boat.

Interesting, in my country they only offer a 1 year warranty for this device.

Anyways, after installing the latest 307 BIOS and MEUpdate Hotfix on my GL702VS I am now getting PL1 throttling and FPS drops with Turbo on. The only real solution I've found to this is running the machine without Turbo, but I can't help but wonder - did any of you observe the same issues?

Also, didn't see much info about it, but have you guys tried to unlock BIOS settings? There should be options to help with all kind of throttling.

Can you revert the BIOS to previous version? ME should do less of that to system performance.

I've read that it is possible to pass custom parameters to WinFlash that it would accept older BIOS versions. For now I've settled with Turbo Off - less heat and noise this way, fans don't spin higher than 3500 RPM.

Doesn't ME stand for Management Engine and is responsible for regulating power behavior?

    Various
EC is in charge of power flow from power adapter and can control CPU/GPU's power allocation.
ME is responsible for CPU power regulation, etc.

Have you monitored the temperature during gameplay? It seems like it's either overheating, or overloading AC adapter...

    Update:

First, Throttlestop stopped working for some reason and I lost my underclock. Fixed with the latest update (replaced exe with newest verion, works fine and remembered all my undervolt settings).

    Next:
Larger holes were added in a honecomb pattern below all three fans in my machine and felt adhesive disks for furniture were added (2x stack) which gave increased clearance for airflow, significant improvement.

    Next:
Thermal pads have been replaced with 1.0mm arctic cooling pads,
Paste has been updated from IC Diamond 24c to Noctua NHT5

Performance seems to have improved significantly with temps staying under 80C, usually in the 76C range which is excellent.

Here's my biggest problem and issue that I need help with:
What in the blue blazes is that damn tape that ASUS has holding the heatsink on all the chokes near the rear of the laptop. So far I have had a hell of a time finding a replacement since I foolishly cut mine to make it easier to remove the heatsink. I suspect that the heatsink is rising up on this part and choking the extra airflow provided by the third auxiliary fan.

So far I have tried industrial strength duct tape, which worked temporarily but audibly I heard pop off after a Heaven Benchmark marathon. (Tensioned with the board and heatsinks resting firmly against their appropriate chokes and etc.) So that's out since the adhesive failed due to the high heat.

I have some Kapton and glass fiber tape on order from amazon to see if they can solve the problem, but I would like to know what that damn black tape is.

    Sidenote:
Once I get this figured out, Linustechtips, in their insane quests for laptop cooling have found a product made from a sheet of carbon fibers that massively outperforms thermal paste while not running and potentially causing problems like liquid metal. That is the next step for me since its 1) reusable 2)doesnt run and 3)doesn't age like traditional thermal paste.

Once I get this all storted out, I'll list a guide with appropriate measurements and performance comparisons between my modded bottom plate and the original unmolested one.

As for a quick lazy reference, I snagged and cropped an image I found earlier in the thread to point out the damn tape that apparently noone sells.

Now If only I can figure out why the hell I was banned for "no specified reason" indefinitely from the ROG forum all things would be peachy.

Updates to come after I throw more money at amazon for tape.
