I received my GL502VM today but the lid is covered in scratches... :( How common is it for a new laptop to come scratched out of the box?

besides the brushed aluminum vertical "scratches" texture?

there should not be any other scratches running in any other direction. if you have horizontal and diagonal scratches, then you should return it.

Since it is wrapped in soft cloth bag, it should not get scratches during shipping.

It is exactly what you are describing. Lots of fine scratches opposite of the texture of the cover. I guess I will return it. Man do I have some bad luck with laptops, I've tried 6 already (different brands) and to me it seems there is a common trend of declining quality.

Even if it hadn't been scratched during shipping, it seems like the lids get scratched pretty easily. Mine has gotten a few just from putting it in my bag and carrying it around. The good thing is the silver color makes it pretty hard for the scratches to stand out.

That doesn't sound good. Can someone confirm this?

Because I really don't want to play 1500 Euros for a laptop that scratches when you look at it. :/

Would you mind taking 60 seconds to post a picture of the scratches? I'd like to see them!!

I don't own it anymore, the store ordered a new one for me. I hope it's better. I did make a picture though, every corner had scratches like this. Hard to see in normal daylight, but under a light it looked like someone attacked it with sandpaper.

oh, most people probably wouldn't see that, If you can't see it under normal daylight or a desk lamp.
That's probably just scratches from the assembly line.

i don't even want to know what mine looks like. I'm not going to shine my phone flash on it to find out.

Ive been wanting to buy the ROG GL502VM-DB71 or the GL702VM-DB71 but have yet to decide between the two.

Everyone is saying the 502VM doesnt have TB3, can you guys confirm if it really is just a simple update from ASUS to make it TB3 instead of just USB 3.1 Gen 2...

I also did not notice it until my desk light was shining on the lid in the evening. Otherwise I think I would have never known. I do think a laptop should not be scratched, visible or not. If the next one is also scratched I will look elsewhere for my needs. To be honest, I've owned quite a few Asus laptops from 2005 until now and not one has been a good experience. Maybe it is time to find another brand if this doesn't change.

sloppy assembly line. Metal parts tend to scratch easily.

My Y580 metal lid got scratched simply by spinning it on a cloth.

Well, the shop told me they ordered a new one but today they cancelled and told me I can only choose another laptop for 1499, because this model is now 1599. I asked them to refund me, I have no time for this mess. Anyway, point is, I think this was a returned unit sold at discount.

Does anybody know if the GL 702 VM can support a 1 TB M.to drive? Or better yet a mvme m.2 ssd? And what size?

Does anyone have the new GL502VS-DS71 with the IPS (AHVA) 120hz panels? What's the color gamut and would you mind sharing temps?

And also for those who have the GL702VS-DS71, could you identify what panel model is? Thanks a lot! :)

i am about to purchase the gl502vm-fy292 and have some questions on it; this will be my first ever asus notebook, and even a gaming notebook since i mostly used workstations and business notebooks so far, because i urgently need a new notebook for personal usage, and intend to do some gaming on it as well (not that much in terms of time, maybe 1-4x a week, but when, i really want to crank everything up and be able to do so for 2 years with any current and upcoming game @1080p). but at the same time it needs to be portable and also have some 3+ hours of battery time for office/university usage, and i want it to have usb-c/thunderbolt 3 and some other details met here, so this model seems to suit my needs quite well i think.

this model is the only kaby lake gl502vm announced for my region (CE/SEE) so far, and it is perfect for me as it is really slimmed down to a basic configuration - only the on-board 8gb ram (why do they put in on-board memory.... if it dies one needs to replace the whole mobo?!), 256gb ssd and no OS, so i can install my win10pro on it freshly, which id do anyway even if it came with a pre-installed OS already.

    so a few questions:
    - memory: is there anything to consider (brand, clocks) when installing a second 8/16gb module (eg. compatibility/dual channel with the on-board one)? asus website says its ddr4-2400, max 24gb, so i assume that would be the 8gb on-board + a 16gb module?

    - ssd: the description of this model unfortunately says "SSD 256GB M.2 SATA/AHCI (2280/M-Key Slot, NVMe-support)"; is this surely only a sata-connected ssd? wouldnt be the first time a third party site provides inaccurate specs. so if i want it to be connected over pcie, i would need to replace it with another one? is there any compatibility list (or even worse, a bios whitelist) or suggested models like a few posts above to use, or can i use any (would prefer famous ones like samsung/intel/sandisk anyway)?

    - hdd: i will definitely install an additional 1-2tb 7200rpm hdd - anything to watch out for here, or is it straight-forward?

    - display: no word on whether its the 60hz or 120hz 1080p g-sync display; so, if its the 60hz one and i would like to install a 120hz one (since ive been using a 120hz display on my notebook since 6 years now and probably wont want a downgrade), is this possible or are there any hardware restrictions; compatibility? how difficult resp. prone to damage is it to open the lid and replace the display on this notebook?

    - gsync/optimus: i learnt that the choice between them is not just a matter of software settings, but hardware configuration, so i assume since g-sync is available, it means that the gtx1060 is connected directly to the display and hence optimus is impossible even if i turned off g-sync; so no way to use optimus (which id prefer over g-sync)?

-thunderbolt 3: since the kaby lake version, asus website explicitly says it supports thunderbolt, but is it true thunderbolt 3 40gbps? i read here something about its firmware being outdated, is this still the case, and one cannot use non-asus firmware for it to have it up-to-date?

    - keyboard: how about replaceability of the keyboard? from what ive seen i think the keyboard is not an individual spare part but part of the chassis top cover, so i assume its quite difficult to replace it or one needs to order a complete new top cover with a different keyboard on it? there are 2 reasons for this question - 1. the model i could receive might have a localization (SEE or german) i dont like, hence id like to change it for a UK/US english one; 2. my 1-year-old son loves playing around with keyboards and this might lead to keys getting broken out since he doesnt press them from above but scratches on them from the side and upwards; so far my mbp has stood well against it, but mbps are rather exceptional in terms of build quality and i dont expect gaming notebooks to be likewise sturdy

    - asus bloat-/software: since it comes with no OS, and i would install win10pro freshly even if it did, there wont be any pre-installed software; is there anything really essential (eg. rog gaming center for things like turning off the keypad, or is it possible without it as well?), and can i download everything that comes pre-installed from asus?

    thanks!

ram rarely ever goes bad, soldered or not.

it's a pcie nvme slot, but asus put a cheap sata m2 in there. There doesn't seem to be a whitelist, as I was able to install Intel brand nvme ssd no problems.

    hdd is easy to install

    no optimus.

if your version has thunderbolt 3, then it is the slow 20gbps version. not 40.
    pcie 3.0 x2

keyboard is fused to the deck, so it is not easy to replace. I think they only sell the keyboard together with the top deck.

see my other thread where I disassemble the kabylake gl502vm

    thanks!

so if i find the ssd speed to be insufficient, i can just get a pcie nvme one and install it.

regarding thunderbolt: so it is not sure that all 2017 gl502vm have thunderbolt?! but this would contradict their own spec page, or it is a downgrade since the 2016 one obviously had thunderbolt according to this: https://www.asus.com/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-GL502VM/specifications/
how can one tell whether a specific model (gl502vm-fy292 in my case) has it or not, *before* purchase?

i have just called their german support and was surprised by their incompetency considering these should be their premium consumer products... but since im used to HP business support, then its maybe no surprise....
first she told me that they have thunderbolt, and that i should look on the german spec page of the gl502vm instead of the US one, then i look on the german page but there is no kaby lake gl502vm at all, so n/a.
then she leaves for a minute to ask somebody and confirms that there is thunderbolt.
then i ask whether it is 40 or 20gbps, she again leaves and comes back with the answerr: 10gbps, which means its either no thunderbolt at all or v1 :/

makes me wanna rethink buying my first ever asus notebook..

I honestly wouldn't bother trying to get anything out of their tech support, they're pretty finicky. It's leaps and bounds better than HP, but that's not really saying much. I have the gl502vs-ds71 model and I like it, but it's by no means perfect. It honestly depends on your budget and what you want to get out of your laptop. I wanted a 120hz 15", and it was basically between this and the alienware 15, and the alienware has some serious cooling issues thanks to their new design. If you don't mind having a plastic build and don't have any problems opening it up to upgrade the parts, either model is a decent deal.

she then told me to ask per email since then i will get an official and firm answer, so i did this now.

HP's business support is superb, compared to HP's consumer and asus support i just called.
budget-wise there is not really any constraint (though i dont wanna pay too much if i can get same for less, or for something i dont need, ie. gtx1070 or more, or workstation gpus), my main reason to exclude brands like alienware is that i hate their typical gaming notebook looks. my perfect notebook would be a HP zbook 15 with a consumer gpu (gtx 1060), or an elitebook 850 with a 7700hq and gtx 1060 (they all have usb-c/thunderbolt 3, zbook even has 2 of them). but all notebooks with such gpus are gaming notebooks, so i need to find one that is least gaming looking.

i will now look for an MSI GS63VR 7RF stealth pro, since this one certainly has thunderbolt 3 40gbps and also doesnt look that much gaming-like. but unfortunately MSI gaming notebooks, as well as most other gaming brands, especially custom ones, are really rare and hard to get here.

the skylake version of GL502VM had thunderbolt 3 in the US, but I have seen one review of the canadian version which did not have thunderbolt 3.
so it's possible there are two versions out there.

The GL502VM has the worst misinformation on the web. Even in the USA, when the kabylake gl502vm came out, the vendors were saying there is no thunderbolt 3, but in fact, it did have thunderbolt 3.

Asus does not give its customer service or vendors complete information regarding the GL502VM. So they don't know s*** about their own products.

The best thing to do is buy it from a vendor that allows returns. Buy it and return it if it doesn't have the features you want.

You don't even need to setup the computer. Just boot straight to BIOS when you get it. If it has thunderbolt, it will say so in the bios.

thanks for all your comments, really helped a lot.

now im gonna wait for asus' response, as well as info on the MSI GS63VR 7RF or the equivalent with gtx1050ti (though the latter is absolutely nowhere to be found), then ill decide. but getting the asus and just testing it for a few days and returning it if unsatisfied certainly is a good idea (since this is the EU, return policies are mandatory for vendors). i assume the intel JHL6240 controller is soldered onto the mobo so theres no way to replace it?

Hey folks...I have GL502VY w 1070 purchased back in Oct 2016...its been a pretty decent Laptop (for a cheaper gaming laptop).....now I know I read about this issue with the battery awhile ago...BUT...was there ever any fix from Asus ? After about 3 hrs of gaminig my battery discharges to about 93% (yes plugged in), but i'm more concerned with how hot the battery gets....its like a brick on fire...very very warm. Anyone know if Asus had a solutin or RMA option? Just curious....thnaks

has anyone ever replaced the top-deck (ie. the keyboard) on the gl502vm?
or what does one do in case eg. a key cracks or breaks out - just send it to asus for repair?

i may receive the gl502vm soon, and in case i am satisfied with it and it has at least the 20gbps thunderbolt port, i might keep it, but i definitely would like to replace the keyboard since it comes with a german keyboard and i want a US/UK one.

so, is it somewhat easy or possible at all to replace the top-deck with the keyboard on it?
and can anyone tell whether i can buy the replacement top-deck for the gl502vm(-fy292) with a US/UK keyboard directly from asus?

I got an GT72 with GT970m last year. Since MSI skipped on the upgradeable graphic card part I was allowed to send it back to the vendor with full reimbursement.

I was looking for a replacmenmt with a better GPU in the same price range so the Asus ROG GL502VS caught my eye. Worse screen and sound system, but 50% better graphics card.

    A couple if questions:

Whats the current situation on the throttling and battery drain issues I keep reading about? Does it still happen or did the latest bios (301) fix it?
How hot does it get? Will it still run smoothly in sumer when room temperature goes up to 80°F/30°C?
Is the 3,5mm jack a combined headphone/spdif jack?
Does is register as a 2.0, 5.1 or 7.1 sound device in Windows? If it registers as a surround deivce I could use Soundblaster X-Fi MB3 on it.

    Thanks

    Hello,

I recently purchased a GL702VS and I have a question about the thunderbolt port. I would like to know if anyone has a link to a thunderbolt USB hub that will power my external hdd and external ssd at the same time.

    Thank you for the help.

you can't just replace the keyboard. You have to replace the whole deck.

and it appears you can buy from
    https://www.ipc-computer.de/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=gl502vm&modelID=115922

thanks, i assumed that one has to replace the whole deck, so this is why i asked whether somebody has already done that and can report on it here, since other than the bottom deck, which is simple, the top deck seems to be more complicated to disassemble, and i havent found any instructions/videos where it is shown how to do it for the gl502(vm)

it's very easy to disassemble the gl502... only a few screws holding the motherboard, and the whole thing comes out.

this is the keyboard deck with the keyboard 'welded' with melted plastic rivets

Not sure if they're selling the whole plastic deck, so I would call to make sure before ordering.

ok, if its really easy then no problem at all. my main concern is that there is something that cannot be disassembled and reassembled without replacing it with a new part or without breaking and having to glue/weld something freshly afterwards. im just wondering why there are no official instructions on how to disassemble it... for all of my HP notebooks there always has been an official service and maintenance guide available for everyone that describes detailed steps on how to disassemble all parts.

yes, i got the confirmation that it comes together with the deck as one part, so no breaking out the old one and welding on the new keyboard necessary :D

the speakers are stuck on with double sided tape. Other than that, everything else looks screwed on, if they need to be transferred to the new deck.

Hey BeastOG, I'm very close to buy the GL502VS DS71 or the WS71. Link here: http://www.excaliberpc.com/653902/asus-rog-strix-gl502vs-ws71-15.6.html

Can you confirm me if it has Thunderbolt 3? What about the power adapter, 230W? Is it a TN or IPS panel?

Thanks for your time in advance! :)

    Hello all,
I have GL502VS with GTX 1070 & 15,6 FHD panel (LG). And I have a problem - there are NO!!! "G-Sync set up" section in NVIDIA control panel. I have tried various version of drivers. Fresh drivers from NVIDIA and not so fresh from ASUS site. So G-Sync doesn't work at all! How do you think what's wrong with my laptop? Thank you in advance!

    Check out my ghetto mods...

scraped off the tacky strix and evil eyes logos on the kb deck, and colored the orange keys with a sharpie marker.

    Saul,

I recently purchased the GL502VS DS71 and I love it. Pretty sure it does NOT come with TB3, but I think the panel is an IPS panel. If you do buy it, make sure it has BIOS 301, as there is a power issue, that is corrected by that BIOS. But Wicther 3 looks great. I know others have complained about the noise when playing games, but I have the Hyper X Cloud 2 headphones and can't hear anything.

I'm so sorry I didn't have a chance to respond, pharmacy school has been kicking my ish in and it's been everything I can do just to keep up. To the best of my knowledge, it does NOT have tb3. It is just a normal usb c. The power adapter is 230W, but make sure your BIOS is updated so you don't deal with power drain issues while gaming. It is a TN panel, as no IPS panels currently have the ability to have 120hz as far as laptops are concerned. However, it is one of those wide viewing panels, so I think the best way to describe it would be IPS like. The colors are not as amazing, but it does the job just fine and is far better than most TN panels. I love the laptop, with the exception of battery life, but that's just what you get with a laptop like this. Hopefully next gen will have a bigger battery.

I believe that mine is only a 60hz monitor. I did get the updated CPU version I7-7700HQ processor. When playing D3 with G-Sync on, It caps out at 60hz. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Just to make sure, do you have the 1060 or 1070 model? 1060 comes with an IPS 60hz GSYNC display. The 1070 models have a 120hz AHVA display going at 120hz.

I made the decision to go 1070 since I will have this for a few years and want it to last. Do I need to do something to turn on 120hz or did I just get screwed over? This is my first gaming laptop since my Dell 17 Core Duo 2 so these options weren't even a thing back then.

It looks like D3 has a known issue with gsync. http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=393714

I would try another game just to make sure but you can also go to the nvidia control panel go to the resolution and make sure that it is set to 120hz.

Given how this is the best topic to "pin" my MSI Afterburner profile in, I thought I would post it here in case anyone needs or wants it.

The whole series of the GL502VM(Z) / FX502VM series suffers from a faulty default voltage table in the GTX 1060 graphic card, causing unnecessarily high temperatures and in turn horrible lag-spikes during gaming caused by the heat-induced throttling of the card.

This is however a completely software-related error, and can be fully rectified by adjusting the voltage curve accordingly, reducing the heat on the card by a whole 11°C bringing it back down into the card's safe-zone without affecting performance or limiting the max frequency in any way.

You can find the profile here: https://pastebin.com/iRPpmEQa

The fixed voltage curve is stored in profile slot #1.

I've found that there is an even better way to keep this thing (GL502VM/FX502VM) running without any lag-spikes.

I've noticed that whenever turbo-boost was completely disabled via XTU, I've never run into any throttling issues whatsoever, despite having the same "high" temperatures.

This got me thinking that the throttling we have experienced might not be heat related after all, but rather linked to the system's power-draw.

Upon further inspection, I've pinpointed that the default 45W Turbo Boost Power Max, and 60W Turbo Boost Short Power Max were simply too much for our system to take.

Lowering both of these settings to 39.5W in the Intel XTU seems to be the sweet spot that perfectly balances the power-draw, running the system at stable 3GHZ clock on all 4 cores plus having the GPU running all the way to its max clock.

This works great in tandem with a 75mV undervolt on the CPU btw.

No undervolt required for the GPU on this setup.

I've tested this find myself over several hour long gaming sessions with not a single lag-spike to be seen (no sudden underclocks to 800mHz anymore! yay!) and the CPU frequency ranging somewhere between 2.9 and 3.1ghz during full load.

I consider this the best setup for the GL502VM/FX502VM series notebooks so far, pushing them as far as they can go.

Now if someone could identify the UEFI variable offsets so we can make this changes permanent via UEFI Shell instead of having to rely on Intel XTU to apply them on boot, that would be marvelous.
