They are running on the same COD engine, and COD5 should actually be better optimized than COD4. Check your drivers.

Wish it ran like it was optimized... my drivers are up to speed that is not it... has anyone else run CoD4/CoD5 side by side??
-
They run on the same engine, but CODWW has more flare and flash so normally runs at a slightly lower FPS (think about all those limbs lying around vs COD4).
-
Can you take some pics of the screen please? Also, is the port cover on the sides removable?
-
is this a nice notebook? like build quality ect? is it loud?
-
It looks great, but I still like my G50Vt more. 17" screen is too big.

Hey AM Radio how do you liek Stranglehold? Is teh controls any good with the keyboard and mouse. I was curious bcuz I saw the game at Gamestop for $9.99 and wanted to get some input on it b4 I bought it.
Also here's some good coolers:

Stranglehold rocks, IMO. not a revolutionary 3rd person shooter, but sure hell is fun. esp. with Massive D. everything can be destroyed, cover can be blown away. if you like John Woo/Chow Yun Fat/ Max Payne, you'll dig it.
keyboard + mouse. is there any other way? i've tried shooters using game pads, but it never feels right.
anyhow $10?!? do it! -
Thanx for the feedback AM. Did you look into the coolers I posted for you? I plan on getting the NZXT one.
-
yeah, i saw them, thanks!
NZXT looks to be the one to get, but man, that thing is huge! and it's ridiculously priced for Canada. maybe i'll ask Santa ... -
LoL !
Is there a new Good Review of this beauty? -
Hold 'er horses buddy
I'm working on one right now
-
Oh ok, Thanks man.. I look foward for your review.
BTW be as honest as you can please ^^ but also you have to be kind with her..

-
Hey ViciousXUSMC,
Im not sure I want to know what you were using the laptop in the toilet for but make sure you dont take off that plastic coating to prevent extra damage

^ you mean i don't get repped for that? !

Hrm is there a way to tell what ram is installed in Vista (not amount but specific type?)
I have the Asus G71G-A2 ordered from NewEgg, got it today and my memory operations per second only scores 4.8
proc 5.8
memory 4.8
gpu 5.9
gaming gpu 5.8
HD 5.9 -
Don't worry about the windows index experience. I have a 5.0 for my memory on my G71G-A1 while others have 5.2-5.4. WEI is an extremely poor benchmark for performance and doesn't really represent anything.
-
Crank your Turbo Gear up and run the index, you max it out
-
Does the G71G-A2 have an expresscard slot? I am leaning heavily toward purchasing this model because of the apparant build quality, combination of features, and the price. I like the dual lamp screen, processor, memory, gpu and hdd specs, seems like pretty good bang for the buck. Been considering the HP HDX18t and the Toshiba X305-706 as well. The HP has pretty good all around features except the gpu seems a little weak. The Toshiba seems cheezy with those red flames but it has dual 9800m gts's. The processor is P8400 yhough it is upgradeable but complicated.
Pretty sure I'm gonna go with the Asus, just waiting for the funds to clear tomorrow from some stock I sold. The only way I will get the HP is if they come out with another 30% off coupon between now and then. I would get the QX9300 processor. -
Yes it does
It's located on the right side of the notebook.
-
If you scroll down to ports/ interfaces, there is no mention of an expresscard slot. http://www.excaliberpc.com/588894/asus-g71g-a2-17-notebook.html#TabSpecification I have a Novatel Wireless EX720 mobile wireless expresscard and need a slot. http://www.novatelwireless.com/inde...-do-networks&catid=1:merlin-pc-cards&Itemid=8
-
Thanks for the quick reply.
-
Is the ROG as solid and well made as it appears in the photos? I was really leaning toward the Toshiba X305-706 because of the dual gpu's and despite the color until I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ab6oefIm9I
-
Historically build quality on the Ensembles has been good - I have a W3j and the G71G-A2 coming.
-
There is very little keyboard flex on the G71G, and certainly less than the toshiba in that video. I've seen the X305 many times at my local Best Buy and TBH, I'm not all the impressed. The G71G is definitely a much better build.
-
Someone else asked this but I did not see a response though perhaps I missed it... are the side port covers removable?
Also, can you detail what ports are on each side as the pictures looked kind of dark to me.
And can you get a closer shot of the power button/status light area?
Lastly, the chipset is a 1066 FSB correct as is the processor? I know the RAM is 800MHz but does the machine support faster ram and if so how fast?
Looking forward to the review. I had placed an order for an Alienware m15x but when I saw this machines featuers and price combined with all of the problems the m15x supposedly has, I'm now leaning towards this one.
Thanks. -
Still waiting for your review

No, the port covers are not removable.
Pictures here
Well, for DDR2, 800mhz is the fastest. If you want 1066mhz or 1333mhz ram, you'll need DDR3 memory, which the G71G doesn't support -
It doesn't support DDR3? Why would it not? Isn;t it built on the newest chipset?
-
we were all wondering this. all the specs before it shipped stated DDR3 and 1066mhz bus. i think about a week before delivery in North America, the actual specs became known.
not very much (if any) performance difference between DDR2 and DDR3 at this point. -
Nope..... but in all honesty, there is very little performance gain between DDR2 and DDR3. It will show in benchmarks, but you probably won't notice it in real life tasks.
-
I think the G71V-Q1 is the only model with DDR3 :-(
-
Does it support RAID?
-
^ yes.
(The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.) -
Actually the G71G-A1/A2 doesn't support RAID.
-
I'm surprised they don't support these capabilities. The Intel P43 chipset is supposed to support all of those functions. Possibly a BIOS update will enable these? I've been trying to email ASUS for actual specs but their email site never renders properly for me.
-
what?!? no way!!
i just checked the manual, as i swore i saw the option ... and it IS there. but only "on selected model", which i'm guessing doesn't include this box.
that is CRAZY. why bother with dual HDs if that's not an option?
ack. -
Well, as noted previously, I was on my way to getting an Alienware m15x but canceled it when I heard of the many people having issues with it combined with the headaches that are caused by Dell Financial Services with my Titanium Account. For example, I canceled my order on Monday and DFS actually called me tonight to verify I actually placed the order. Talk about bad customer service and internal communications issues.
Anyhow, the point I wanted to make was that the m15x does not have RAID, a subwoofer, and only supports up to 667MHz RAM so these extras were not part of my original plan anyhow though they would be plusses
-
Yup.. I was pretty shocked myself when I first found out. Not sure why RAID is supported on the G50 but not the G71
Nevertheless, the hard drives themselves are still pretty fast. Why bother with dual HDDs? Because it's still better than 1 HDD
-
OK so I was finally able to get an email off to ASUS directly asking if the G71G-A2 supports RAID and RAM faster than 800MHz either now or with a future BIOS upgrade. I ordered one anyhow biut I'm still interested in the answer, patricularly since different sites have different specs for the machine!!!
For example, the following site has it using the PM45 and ICH9M:
http://alrightdeals.com/Item.htm?Id=S0_Notebooks_Notebook.Computers___AS-G71GA2
Wheras this site lists it as PM43 and ICH10:
http://store.redbarncomputers.com/Itemdesc.asp?ic=884840365556
And there are others that have the same discrepancies. -
On another thought, doesn't Windows have a built in soft-RAID capability?
-
As mentioned earlier, there is currently no DDR2 laptop ram that has speeds greater than 800mhz. However, if in the future manufactures are able to produce 1066+mhz, then it's technically possible.
Also, I don't think there's a PM43 chip out yet. Currently Intel only has these "performance" chipsets available:
GS45
PM45
PM965
945PM
915PM
855PM
The G71G uses the PM45 -
This is one of the models I'm considering, along with the X305, and while I don't like the color scheme or keyboard on the Qosmio, I like the DDR3 and RAID. Is it definite that the G71 series doesn't support RAID?
-
Yup, the G71G-A1 doesn't have RAID. This is also confirmed by Ken from gentechpc. The X305 is larger and heavier than the G71G
I should also mention that for gaming and daily tasks, DDR3 1066mhz provides no noticeable performance difference in comparison to DDR2 800mhz. Gaming wise, the G71G is still superior due to the 9800M GS GPU (the X305 has the 9700M GTS).
-
I'm considering the X305-Q706, with the dual 9800m GTS's, and later upgrading the processor, probably to a T9800 or a T9600. I'm surprised as well about the lack of RAID on the G71G-A1 and A2, the RAID is more important to me than the DDR3 of course.
Thank you again for the info!
Matt
