OK where the heck is the review? I'm starting to get annoyed that this system is listed on the net with so many differenet configs and none of them seem to be accurate. I want to know what the REAL config is.

So far I've seen the following even though specs and pictures indicate otherwise:

    NOT: > 800 MHz RAM
    NOT: Modem Port
    NOT: PM45 Chipset
    NOT: RAID
    NOT: Subwoofer

Can you post a pic of the back, lid, and front of the unit please?

Guys, you could PM Andrew and ask him about the status of my review ;)

Kernel, as for the specs, the G71G-A1 I have is:
    800mhz RAM
    no modem port
    P43 chipset
    no raid
    no subwoofer

Different countries will have slightly different specs, eg the G71G in Hong Kong/Taiwan would have a lightscribe optical drive.... the north american version doesn't.

Thanks Dave. You're right about PMing Andrew but since it's late and I just stumbled across the gentech review identified in this thread (not sure how I missed it originally) I am good for now. Besides, nothing I've seen so far is going to deter me from this machine and since it should be arriving tomorrow by 3PM and between there is sleep and work, there is not much more time for me to read :)

None of the identified "concerns" really affect me anyhow as the Alienware m15x I was originally going to get only had 667 MHz RAM, no modem port, no raid, and no subwoofer anyhow. Like I said before - I just dislike so much discrepancy on something like this. I might feel differently if it was something that was key to me (i.e., if it doesn't actually come with a Blue-Ray drive, an HDMI port, a VGA port, or BlueTooth I'll be upset) but to this point it doesn't seem to be the case. :)

It's not unjustified; certainly there are lots of discrepancies -- and to make it worse, there is no official asus product page at the moment. It exists in the drop down but there it brings you to a blank page (usa.asus.com at least)

    Edit: proof:

HI, I just got today my G71G-A1 in fact just 1 hour ago and I notice something.. the fan started to sound really loud and made all the laptop shake a little bit for about 5 min, after that it got lower and if I hold the laptop with my hands and unbalance it a little bit the sound would go away, now I think it is ok, can some one tell me why was that? and also half of the screen when it gets dark has a white cloud.. do you think that's ok, maybe it will banish later? or that's normal? just the left side..

Something I was thinking is that maybe all this is because it was in the Fedex truck for a long time and it's freezing out side, here in WA.. but maybe not.

    HELP !!! thank you.

EDIT: the sound came back, everytime I turn it on. What can I do?

The fans itself should be that loud and it certainly isn't strong enough to make the whole laptop shake. It's more likely the optical drive that's producing the sound and/or shaking. You could try and set your booting priority so that the optical drive comes last (or after the main hard drive) and see if that helps with the noise/shaking.

Where does the "white cloud" original from? Is it light leakage from the bottom? Also, cold temperatures won't damage computer components, but condensation will. As for the LCD screen, the liquid can freeze but it can also defrost without damage once returned to room temperature. I believe -40F is the lowest temp that is recommended for LCD storage and operating temps are in the 40-50F range.

ok, so the noise seems to be fixed.. the screen is still with the cloud, it is like when you breath in a window and fogs up.. it doesnt come from a specific part, it's just in the center of the left side.. really big, you see it when screen gets dark.
Another thing is that has a blue dot in the left side of the screen too.

It's very slow while writting this.. I type and like half sec later the letters appear and sometimes even more.

I'm kinna worried about all this, I didnt pay more then 1800$ for having this problems.. what do you recommend me to do?

    Thanks!

Could you take a picture of what the screen problem is like?

The slow typing can be due to the bloatware running on your laptop. Try and perform a clean install of vista without all the bloatware or you could uninstall them individually, especially Norton antivirus (use AVG or Avast instead), Asus live update, and office trial for starters.... all other Asus software can be uninstalled as well at your digression. I'd personally keep Direct Console and power4gear.

OK... so here is what I have found so far:

    1) I think my webcam lens is not centered properly. I'll post pics tomorrow if I have time.

    2) My RAM seems to be underclocked.

    3) CPU-Z and Device Manager report the G71G-A2 as having the ICH10R - though I have not seen anything in the BIOS for RAID setup. It's still not a huge issue if it is not available because a buddy of mine pointed me to MirrorFolder which can be used to setup a software based RAID-1 which is what I'm looking for anyhow.

    4) Overall this machine ROCKS HARDCORE!!!!

    1. I don't have any problems with the webcam. If it is not centered properly, then it's probably not tilted(?) enough for me to notice.

    2. Ken, from gentechpc has addressed this issue.
    3. The chipset doesn't support RAID. I haven't heard of MirrorFolder, but it sounds like an interesting concept :)

    4. I agree :D

I hope this work.. Thanks for your help David.

If you are in front and looking right in the center of the laptop, you just have to move a tiny bit to the left and u'll see it really clear.. T_T

I actually do observe that "white cloud" on my screen but it's more of a stripe down the middle and can only be viewed if i shift right from the middle and the black is slightly washed out. The white cloud is very very faint and I had to use black background from Dead Pixel Buddy to see it. I believe this white tint on the screen is due to the dual-lamp screen. I took surface temperatures of my screen and the white areas are about 1-2C warmer than the other regions.
In your case, your screen has a much larger area of the whitish cloud than mine. You also mentioned that you have a blue stuck pixel, correct? I would contact Asus or the place where you purchased your laptop and ask what options could they offer for you.

    Free Avast

Yes, you should definitely contact Asus regarding the stuck pixel (it looks more like a series of blue stuck pixels from your pictures  )

Hey I just picked one of these babies up and was wondering where I can buy a spare battery since I know the battery life for this machine is atrocious(from what it sounds like)?

OK so here are 2 pics of different angles to the webcam. Anyone care to comment? Unlee the screen is straught up, my face will not show on the screen when sitting in a normal position. I believe this to be because the webcam is slightly off kilter. I'd love to know an easy way to fix it without having to send it into ASUS as I just got the thing yesterday!

    Review went up finally! Nice.

One thing though - my A2 only came with a RAM Index of 4.8. Any ideas why this would be?

I wouldn't worry about this since anywhere you buy will be suspect to some shelf-wear.

Try put run WEI on overclocked mode. That should boost your score a bit. But again, I have to stress how insignificant WEI scores are and is a terrible benchmark for performance.

Was yours in a specific overclock when you ran it? Mine was from a fresh boot when I first got it.

If you use the Asus power4gear utility, you can select the overclock mode there. It takes your CPU to ~2.65Ghz

Yes, I know that but I was wondering if yours was overclocked when you ran your benchmarks or if it was stock speed?

Just to chime in here, I too have a whitish cloud when moving to the left slightly. It is only noticable on dark screens though - during normal usage I have not noticed it. I've played Left 4 Dead, UT3, UT2004, and Q3 on it as well as watched Media Player and DivX videos at full screen with various screen action and never ntoticed it. I only notice it when I check it with a black screen and am actively looking for it.
