Well I get back from Iraq grab BF3 (like I need more of a warzone) and Skyrim. I have the idea that I am going to slide in and play with no problems. HA

Any way down to brass tacks I have been playing with settings for the last few in days in skyrim and I can't seem to do any better than 20-30 fps in the wild and 60 inside. I have tried everything ( .ini file tweaks, d3d9, changing reg settings, etc.) that has been mentioned in this thread trying to achieve the 40-50 fps in the wild. I am not sure what I am missing to make the magic happen.

    Current set up
    1080p
    no AA
    AF 4x
    texture high
    radial blur low
    shadows medium
    decals high
    FXAA on
distances set to low to med

try setting shadows at low, decals to medium, FXAA off, AF off and force V-sync off in CCC.

You sir are a saint and a scholar I am knocking around 35-45 fps. The game still looks amazing even with all of that turned off.

It's worth noting that some mods are not working anymore as of today because Steam updated the .exe. The fix to make Skyrim use more than 2GB of RAM is not working anymore and it can crash a modded texture game. Just passing the info.

@cjk93: Catalyst Control Center. Which laptop are you using? If it's Amd/Ati based then, as long as the drivers were installed conventionlly then you have it. If Nvidia based, then you have Nvidia control panel.

@DownyTif: Are you referring to that large memory addres app? Gosh, I just downloaded that yesterday!

Yep. The flags is not at the same place in the new .exe, so running the game will result in a error.

My OC is around the same, I am just scratching my head on the frames you are getting. What kind of jumps did you see in the intro quest? I could get anywhere from 40 to 7 fps(lower FPS when in a beauty intense area like when you lower the bridge) when running around the caves.

I've began to experience some crashes at the Greybeard's courtyard, ..so I've lowered my OC to the lowest; ..776 core / 1289 memory. It's now totally stable on any map. With 76*C max GPU temp.

I'm still playing though at 4X AA, 16X AF, Ultra Decals, High Shadows, high blur, high textures, 1080p.

At this setting and OC, at the very intro (caravan ride) it's mostly 33/35/38, 43 FPS, with 28/29 FPS as lowest but very short spurts (only happens when I look at the thick mist). Inside scenes are still 40-60 FPS mostly.

Putting shadows to medium will give me 8 additional FPS, but I don't like it. Medium shadows loses the realistic look of the game.

I realize too that the crashes has something to do with the high graphic setting, which I'm not willing to compromise. I only lost 2-3 FPS from 800/1600 to 776/1289 OC.

Hmmm, cause it feels solid its just the drops I get at random "intense" scenes. Has there been an update for the game recently? I go abroad and grow a beard and say "yar" occasionally when I am broke. I will loose those ways when I have money.

    EDIT:
I still get lower FPS than you. Is there anything else you have done to make it run better?

I wasn't sure if you picked up the Skyrim4gb program or not. It helped me go from less than 25 fps to about 40-60 fps.

The Skyrim Patch 1.2 should be released tomorrow. There is no mention to performance in the release notes though :(
Regard FPS, I play it on 1920x1080 on my not overclocked G73JH. The only settings I've changed it lowering the shadows to medium and AA to 2x. I occasionally get a little slowdown, but not really a problem for me.

Same here, that is my biggest issue atm, AA - 2, AF - 12, slider settings at high, the rest that can be ultimate are ultimate except shadows which is at medium. I have the .dll as well, along with a 4gb ram patch.

Obviously you can't run it on Ultra. I don't get why people don't understand a laptop hardware is entry level hardware compared to desktops which the games are made for. There are few, if any games you can run on Ultra with on an Asus laptop... Get over it or build a monster desktop.

Not in this case, really, theoretically. Skyrim is made for the XBox 360 and PS3, and these are years behind the G74 graphics card's capabilities. Indoor lighting shouldn't be an issue, for instance... I can run maxed out outdoors just fine, but not always indoors.

    Running 1280x1024.

    8AA, 16XAF, everything on high/ultra/etc.

Try patching if you have issues even outdoors...

Perhaps the Best Buy version plays vastly different. Dunno...

Yes, that's normal. As hulawafu77 said, this is a laptop. On my G73 I play Skyrim on High, with AA off and shadows medium. Even then I still have trouble sometimes.

I don't think this is entirely the laptop's fault, though. Bethesda has done a terrible job of optimizing this game, and we'll need to wait for a patch that actually does something, unlike 1.2.

To me, ..I think is the "Medium" Shadows issue too.

I think keeping medium shadows, then just compensate with other gfx options like this.. pretty much solves it. This will normally give 34-35 FPS as lowest, 31-33 FPS on occasional intense sceen, 29-30 FPS on some 2% of the game.. With slight OC. Maps like Riften runs 31- 35-60 FPS, .. I had at this setting a blimp of 29 FPS on the whole Carvavan Intro of Skyrim.

Solitude Map is heavy, I have to go down to 2X AA, 8X AF ..to average 31 FPS as lowest, average 35-60 FPS.

    Capture 3.JPG

Not bad at 2X AA, 8X AF, ..At Solitude.

1080p is huge. Things don't look pixelated and I can do more multi-tasking (e.g. multi-windows side by side). I would never go back.

Now for a 15.6" laptop, that might be slightly too pixel-dense (and thus small) for me to handle. 1080p on a 17.3 is my limit, I think (I even up the DPI by 115%).

Although something I forgot to mention, I am running ThrottleStop and have nvidiainspector running my 460m at 780/1510/1560 (I can OC up to 800/1600, but I seem to get a few artifacts).

Fps are very good, and temps max at 80-84 C.

Also running the Skyrim4gb for the memory address issue.

I had this very same thought and I have gone from 1440x900 to 1600x900 and now to 1080p and what people say about the Full HD screen is for real the thing is bloody huge! The width is outstanding and the far less pixelated. However for the 5870M the 900p screen is the best thing to have as it will keep you gaming into 2012 comfortably, I was glad I never upgraded mine.

I have a G73JH - RBBX05 and am getting no more than 30 fpsand outdoors and 45 indoors on medium-low settings.. with all shadows OFF in the ini file.

I was thinking about doing a complete video card driver flush and update through CCC... can anyone point me to a link where I can do this? Also, will this help with my performance?

I'm seriously contemplating building a new comp just for this game lol... i thought the G73JH can run it smooth like butter

Before considering building a new computer understand that you cannot blame the 5870M for this if anything its the CPU's fault because the game is a console port and is very CPU intensive. I am running all settings to the max + tweaks and I dont see amazing frames with my high end card you just have to work with what you have got.

Even if it does little it will make you feel better so Drive Sweep all of the ATI files and reinstall your drivers to the latest 11.12 and if you like the 12.1 preview drivers, 11.12 should give you the latest fixes for Skyrim although 12.1 should offer more it has made no difference for me. Make sure you have the latest skyrim patch and consider looking into the forums for tweaks. You can run the water settings higher but the shadow settings lower and see better performance, the awful shadow renderer in the game brings performance down on the 5870M. Enjoy the distances and environment more as they do little to the frames.

If you are not overclocking maybe think about pushing the clocks up a bit if your temps are stable. If you are seriously considering an upgrade the 920XM is the best bet for your model it made one hell of a difference for me compared to others using the JH with the 720QM as ported games are becoming more and more CPU intensive.

Wow, that's a pretty low fps. One thing to do that might really help is to force V-sync off in CCC.

I've been running without V-sync for the last couple of days and mine never dips below 30fps per second. It usually stays in high 40s to low 50s. This is at 1080p.
Actually, sometimes my fps goes too high, lol. Sometimes it goes above 60fps and I experience bad screen tearing. I have the 920xm and that makes a difference but definitely try to disable V-sync in CCC by setting it to always off.

Edit: Do like Yiddo said and make sure you're running Catalyst 12.1 or 11.12. Also turn off AA and FXAA.

After patching the game and nvidia drivers this game runs super well just like the first post said! OC the gpu a bit to maybe 850 core and itll run even better, this laptop (G74) has amazing airflow. At 905 core clock it never goes past 62C in skyrim. 1080p no AA 4xAF high shadows max everything else runs at 30-50fps outside and 40-60inside now!

Best laptop iv ever gotten my hands on. This also happens to be the laptop Ive owned that has the worst audio output of them all, and Im not talking about the speakers, I mean the sound chip itself.. also, THX TruStudio sounds like some serious stuff, but its total junk.

Would the 920xm be a good investment strictly only for gaming?

I would only really play Skyrim, BF3, and maybe a bit of SC2. Right now those chips are around $280 ..but is it really worth a 10-15 fps increase?

I think 920xm is pretty good to extend the life of your laptop. But only if you are not happy with the performance already. I'd go ahead if I had 1080p resolution but everything seems fine on 1600x1900 with my 720qm :p

    Yes - http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/565573-920xm-purchase.html

It is not just about the FPS, the performance increase is visible when you fire all the cores upto 3ghz + and it is similiar to a sandy bridge when you are multi tasking , editing or movie making and then pair it with a SSD and the system will fly.
