If you are close to a microcenter, I would check to see if they have any in stock. I do not mean to thread jump but that is what I did and I got my x2 yesterday and then converted it to an a1. Though I do not have a laptop bag or cool mouse.

Would love to but none around upstate New York. Closest one would be a 1000 mile round trip. Only place left in these areas are Best Buy.

Funny, I was in my local BB yesterday and the guy found the A1 and A2 on the Best Buy for Business site as linked above, but could not find it anywhere else. He offered to hook me up with the regional BB Business rep, but I'll just try to be patient... :(

bestbuy will not be stocking any version of the g73 besides a watered down version for 1200$ and under. Asus is tied up in production for besbuy now but expect bestbuy to have thousands of watered down g73 in march

Thanks, good to know what I would be waiting for.
I just do not know if this would be a good alternative instead of waiting it out for the g73, Asus, plus the obvious cost savings and I can just go grab it this afternoon.

Thanks for the info, a 1600x900 screen will close the deal for me, just cant deal with full 1080p on 17'' screen. Hope it still comes with 5870 and maybe i5-520.

I too would be interested in some more details of this watered down version. I think I'm in the same boat as Abula - 1600x900 with the 5870 at a price point of around $1200 wouldn't be half bad. I would really like at least 6 gig though, and why do I have a feeling that it will only be 4.

Well I went and got the G60J from BB. It is a nice little laptop I must say.
I also have 45 days were I can return it/exchange it since I have the premier reward zone member thing, incase they come out with the the one I really want or it becomes available. Had to I had no laptop, although I hate to do that to any company, but heck I have given them thousands at least I get some benefit. :)
I do really like this machine may even just keep it.
I did notice other ppl have this listed with an i7, so I wonder if they will down grade that in the G73 or the graphics?

Morgaine, the G60JX seems like a decent deal. I guess the only thing that annoys me is the 1366x768 resolution.

    Not bad.
If it's reasonably priced I might take the plunge.
The 5870 really is a great GPU,only thing that scares me are some problems reported in the G73 owners thread.
I know at least 3 people who have returned there units.

Intersting i though i would only come with 1hdd, having two means ill get both caddies, so thats a nice two swap the ssd in. Since the G60 had usually a lower clock cpu, and the new G60 comes with the i5-430 i was hoping to see at least a i5-520, but the i7-620 arent that expensive on ebay although ES though.

Yeah I had to RMA mine.. I was getting "grey screens of death" lockups after having the unit 6 days. From my reading, a lot of folks were experiencing this too.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=457852&page=201

It killed me to do it as the machine is so cool, but that's a lot of money we're talking. May buy it again when they get the bugs worked out and it's a bit cheaper.

    I hear ya Mike.
Money is tight these days and blowing it on any laptop that does not work right out of the box is foolish.
Still this laptop intrigues me if all the bugs are worked out.

me too. It's pretty slick. All I got was "wow" when I showed it to a few friends of mine... went with an N61JQ-X1. Nice little lappy with an i7 Quad Core.. it's playing my games with no problems... hooked up to a 23" LG HD Monitor and it's sweet. But that G73.... oh momma

What is meant by "watered down"? CPU? GPU? HDD? What? Only thing I can see diminished is the screen resolution, probably 1600x900, 4GB, and a single HDD. But that's still a pretty nice spec machine, although personally I'd prefer a minimum 1680x1050, so with 16:9 these days means 1920x1080.

G73JH-A2 has only DVD, I don't consider that watered down. I see BR as an "extra"

If the Best Buy version has Core i5 it better cost less than $1200 considering the the G73JH-A2 costs $1549 with 1920x1080 screen, i7-720QM, HD 5870, 8GB RAM, 2x500GB 7200RPM HDD.

By water down, I gonna guess the G73-RXB05 will be $1100 with i5 and 1 hdd and 1600x900 spec screen, and dvd drive. G73-RXBO9 will be $1200 will be a i7 and 2 hdds, and 1600x900 screen and dvd drive. And both will probably have only 4GB of ram because DDR3 is much more expensive than DDR2.

Which was how the G72 BB versions were compared to their A and X versions, except that when the G72 BB were available they had 6GB of DDR2, given that DDR2 was cheap.

I am interested to see what a i7 620 would do in one of these puppies, not that it's likely that Best Buy will have a version with that CPU.

But from specs listed by asus it will be an option at some point

yeah, if I'm going to void the warranty I will go all out with a 920xm as that will unlock the motherboard and allow cpu overclocking as well. From a pure gaming standpoint though it would stand to reason that a 620 would outperform a 720, could make it a real nice deal for those who aren't going to use their machines for anything that could benefit from the extra cores

Is the i7 620 a dual-core i7 or a quad-core i7 without the additional 4 virtual cores? And is an i5 typically a quad-core without the additional 4 virtual cores? The new non-confusing lineup is confusing...

    Dual core.
But it overclocks like crazy both cores over 3Ghz and one core around 3.3/3.5Ghz.
Sorry forgot the exact numbers but those are pretty close. :p

This is the kinda info I was looking for weeks ago. I was really hoping for a full-blown A1 to be available at BB, as I have credit there and can only really afford to pay for it via the 18 months same-as-cash... :( :(

I am definitely interested as well, if the price and specs are right. I don't want the i7, blueray, the extra 4gb nor a high resolution screen. I suppose I can invest in a Squaretrade warranty.

to the people on this thread that are calling the displays "junk" just because they're <= 1440x 900... I dont see this as being a best buy problem, but more an Asus problem... if they could make a line of 3 models of laptop and keep the specs close to consistent, there wouldnt be 50 different flavors of G50, G51, G60, G72, and G73 found on 5 different retailer/etailers... I've seen 6 different fricken Asus G flavors just in the last 2 months online at best buy..

How about question Asus to make fewer flavors with better/consistent components across all platforms? I like the Asus products i've owned thus far because of bang for the buck, but I also like that when gateway releases a retail model - its the only model with the best bang for the buck at that time of the year and I dont have to worry about it being discontinued in 2 months.

Wouldn't the BB version of G73 come with a Best Buy warranty instead of an Asus warranty? AMEX warranty extension is for valid U.S. manufacturer's warranty

Morgaine - I'm in the same boat ... just picked up the G60j and have 45 days with premier silver (no restocking fees either and a price match guarantee within the return period)... I had a conscience about it as well, if I return it when the G73 comes out, but hey, I've spent a ton there for the last two years so membership has its privileges :)

And if that review of the watered down G73 is what we'll have at best buy - for 1200 I'd gladly take it especially if its has a bluray drive!

I've been watching this thread and I'm wondering if anyone has discovered anything new yesterday. I checked my local BB in Anchorage, Alaska and they knew of it, but did not see it as having a SKU, price, or delivery date yet.

On another note, I bought a sony VPCF115FM/B at BB, great system minus the Nvidia 330m. Fast and relatively light, but the G73 should smoke it with the 5870. I've got a Silver membership as well, so I've got some time for the G73 to come in, but damn BB is slow to get new products sometimes.

    most specs confirmed!

went to best buy today, had them search for g73 in their system.... 2 models came up:

    G73JH-RBBX05 and 09 ...

when I asked him to highlight the description field from left to right on the 05, (the field is only 8 chars long) it said G7305/corei7-720/6gb/500 but I didn't see what the gaphics card read! for $1199 - not bad!! we already kew the release date on bbuy business said 3/07 ... same as his system which said it will be stocked in stores... just not there yet

the 09 flavor was $1599 - bleh and his system indicated it will be online only so I didn't get the specs, sorry..

question remains is, will the 05 flavor have a waters down gpu??

Ok, so it'll only have 6 gig of ram, and only one 500 gig hd. Could they also maybe ditch the 1080p screen, and get it down to $1199? I find it hard to believe that they would ditch the 5780, considering that's the big selling point of the G73. Of course this is BestBuy we're talking about, so I guess all bets are off.

Oh and don't forget that like the Microcenter model, it will most likely have a 1 yr warranty. So make sure to figure that out before you decide to purchase it.

if the G72 is any indication and the previous BB computer lookup info is accurate, I'll guess they'll bring the screen down to 1600x900...oh and obviously ditch the Blue-Ray.

I was thinking the same thing Roy .. they'll probably put 1600x900 and ditch the bluray ...

If anyone here on this thread works at best buy or if any of you will be visiting a best buy, could you do a search again and see if I missed anything in the description? It was a small field and he had to highlight the text from left to right in the box so that we would read the entire field... problem was he did it kind of fast and the text box was short ... the description was probably 20 chars in length or more and the text box was only 8 chars in size...

edit - I just had another brain dump and I also remmeber seeing in that description 17.3 .. is that the size of the G73 screen?

For $1200 if it's 6GB instead of 8GB RAM, one 500GB HDD, 1600x900 screen, DVDRW, that would seem logical.

Also, wonder if the 6GB is 3x2GB or a 4GB and a 2GB. I wouldn't think they'd save much money by using a 4GB module considering the cost. And how would 3x2GB affect performance? It really wouldn't be dual channel, or would it?
