With the Winfix + SetFSB, I can push my little 720QM to 2.1GHz on 4 cores.

Wow, 2.1 is quite something, what kind of temps are you getting? Anyways, even if you get a 920/940xm for your G73, you will be limited by the cooling system. The most people reported on stock cooling was around 2.53GHz at 85C which isn't bad. Running a xm at 3.2GHz on all 4 cores is gonna require additional cooling.
-
-
Because I have a 920xm and when I read about the 3.1GHz on a 720qm I was: "WHY I SPENT BUYING THIS STUPID PROCESSOR?"
-
You can push it to the 3ghz+ over all 4 cores in the 90's but you are gonna need those fans running flat out. If its just for gaming there is little need for it.
Teach us. -
It's just the Windows Clock tweak that's been around. I can get the unit up to 1.8 with SetFSB, then TurboBoost will bounce up to 2.0 - 2.1 with a load on 8 threads. (like doing a video encode) On the 740's I've done 1.9 with 2.25 - 2.3 TurboBoost. Sandy Bridge 2630 still outperforms both.
-
SetFSB doesn't seem to work for me

Installed 11.5 hotfix over the top of WHQL 11.5, and without any saves, the recommended spec by cdproject was low. Played it as it was intended and absolutely terrible in all honesty. Thought to myself This and set everything to Ultra. WOW. What a Difference. I reckon there must be a bug in their video settings cos its perfect now albeit not had many mass ai fights. Might be eating these words if there is a assive framerate drop in them kind of scenarios. Big Up the G73
EDIT : 1080 with Everything as Ultra sets it without UberSampling, AI Catalyst Off And AA AF all application run -
BaggyBizzle does the game feel smooth for you though. Those are the settings i play most games at ultra without aa on my g53 so im hoping i can do the same when i get the game.
-
a question for the JW owners, how is it running on your machines with the new beta drivers? what setting what fps?
I wanna know coz hopefully we'll see the same performance on jh after the hotfix..
Also for all other people playing this game, is there anyway i can cap the fps at around 35?? I find it that for some reason when fps is a bit higher that this, the game feels too fluid and fast..kinda like its running a bit faster than it should be.. Maybe its coz i've mostly been in the 20-something fps zone, but as soon as it goes a bit over 30-35 it starts feeling unnaturally fluid.. -
It doesnt feel right at all if i use the recommended settings before starting the game proper. Everything is all good now and smooth as a babys with the settings above....will persevere with those most likely running into problems along the way though me thinks....nothing is ever straightforward with my rig...touch wood -

I had been using Set FSB to oc mine and was able to get it to go to 1.9 on BIOS 211. I updated to BIOS 213 last night and can't get it to OC at all.
This was the freeware version of SETFSB. I wonder if it would make a difference if I purchased a license. -

-
After reading through 10 pages, the advice I've seen include:
1. update your drivers
2. oc with setfsb for the hypothetical cpu bottleneck
3. oc with afterburner
All of which I have done, none of which have made much of a difference. Raising my clocks to 750/1050 also caused my laptop to lock up.
Isn't it safe to say that W2 is just poorly optimized? I also haven't had much luck with it on my 6790 @ 1920x1200. -
4. wait for the promised hotfix
-
the waiting game it is
-
I guess im just lucky cos I dunno what I did but I have no problems at all so far ok yes maybe slightly lowish 25-35FPS in most places but its smooth as can be and totally playable. Maybe coming from 2 8700M GT's I am not as fussy as most about high frames 30 is enough if the game is good enough for me.
I just reached Chapter 2 and I have to say the realism, graphics and story are mind boggling! Stop moaning about having low FPS and play it!! -
I loved her, despite the fact she hated me. -
how i miss it!
-
It's sad about the fps, but like you say Dallers, the game is great
I would prefer enjoying the game with better fps than that but I just want to play it so bad, right now. The thing is that I don't have time right now
So in a way, I guess I'll play more when the hotfix will be available
About OCing, when the laptop has trouble with some clocks, do the problems appear quickly after OCing? Or it can take a while? -
Heh i'm coming from a solo 8700m!! tohiba x205D
@dallers - i get the same fps if i lower the res to 1600x900 but resolutions scale terribly on these laptop lcds! 1440x900 never bothered me on my old toshiba but generally anything but non-native looks terrible on laptops so playing 1600x900 windowed for now..
btw anyone came across the dead assassin in the haystack near the ballista in the prologue, laughed so hard..!
Also, I think this was asked my another member, has anyone noticed a limitation in their cpu's OC capabilities after the 213 bios update..
I ask cause i remember i used to be able to OC to at-least 165-166pll for benchmarking, i even found some screenshots to prove it and now it freezes at anything north of 158... the only major change in between would be the bios update i think.. So anyone else noticed this and tried going back to an older bios to check..?
I think i might go back to the older bios before anyway.. i've never had any gsods and everything runs cool n i dont like the fans spinning faster..
There's no problem with rolling back bios's right? -
Here are my settings with my G53JW-A1
Using Ultra at 1920 1080:
NO AA, NO SSAO, NO Uber, NO Motion Blur.
Plays alright could be better hoping for some more optimized drivers or something. -
If anyone missed it,
Also, CDP has said 1.1 patch for the game should be out before weeks end. -
hahaha, i see the future... "Ati releases a hotfix for Witcher 2 and one day later the game patch brakes the performance gain 'cause the patch was compatible only with the previous driver release... lol"
-
-
-
Yeah... my performance on medium is 30 - 35 FPS, once I put it on high it goes to 20 - 30 FPS.
When it starts to rain... my fps drops down to 15 -20... on high/medium... I hate rain !!!
So, let's hope AMD & DCP come with a fix pretty soon. I ended the prologe and started with chapter 1 but stopped with playing due to low performance.
P.S: On another note, is it normall the game says that I only have 768Mb ram on my video card?(5870m...)
-
Try out my settings on the other page and see what frames you are getting as those are pretty low I see high 20's in the rain. -
yayy they're here...
AMD Catalyst 11.5a Hotfix (8.85.6 RC5 - May 25) - Guru3D.com Forums
hmm only mentions crossfire scaling fix... lets see how they work..
*crosses fingers and goes off to download* -
-
same story for me. unnoticeable change in performance for the witcher 2 on the g73jh. still runs like crap
-
Well here are my findings..
This is with Cpu FSB = 156 and Gpu = 800/1100
Game settings - 1080p With Utra settings(except Ubersampling turned off)
Previously at these setting while running around in flotsam, i used to get 20-25 fps. With new drivers i'm getting 24-26fps.
So max fps hasnt increased but what i did notice is that places where the fps would sink really low earlier dont now, previously places/situations i'd get below 20 fps now are still ~22
For example, in the fistfight with the guard when you first get to flotsam, the DOF and blurring really kick the comp's and i was getting 13-14, now in that fight i'm getting 17-20
The difference will hopefully become more apparent with lower settings, will test and report back
Edit: hmm not much of a difference at other settings either.. The only way of playing this 30fps+ all the time is either lower the resolution or lower the settings all the way down to med or low (or atleast the settings which count - AA,DOF,SSAO)..
disappointed.. -
I'm sure after the 1.1 patch due tonight things should improve
-
I had a save spot right before a video and didn't notice a difference at all.
-
I'm always sad about Ati's drivers. I can't wait to get back with Nvidia cards when I'm done with this laptop.
Anyway, I'll try the driver before crying. -
I tested comprehensively the new driver for Dirt 3 with the built-in benchmark. Everything on max, 8xAA, full hd, except shadows on high. Before updating the driver I got min fps 29.9, avg fps 37.1. After updating I got 30.3 min fps, 36.9 avg fps. WAY TO GO! :|
-
The drivers are officially up.. filename is different but i think its the same as asder00's posted
AMD Catalyst? 11.5b hotfix -
That link to the 11.5b hotfix drivers on AMD's website is good for mobility as well? We don't need a mobility mod or anything?
-
-
Downloading now will test and report back.
Not happy that it does not even mention The Witcher 2 on the driver update page. ATI Do not test my patience!!! -
-
Thanks, will install it and see what happens
-
-
No performance difference.
sigh..
-
The Witcher 2 runs the same, if not slightly worse. Guess we'll have to wait for that patch and hope it fixes things. I'm in the first town and I'm getting 24-27 FPS. I know this thing should be able to do better than that. Guess I'll test out Dirt 3 next...
-
Am I the only one not able to even install the hotfix? I just tried it and got the bluescreen..
-
Anyways, Dirt 3's performance has increased from an average of 50 FPS to 57 for me on high. Although, it never ran bad to begin with, I'd be happier with an extra 7 FPS in The Witcher 2. -
As for: Twitter he says it should work with the mobility...
Maybe they tested it with the new patch ? Or am I just to hopefull?
The patch should give a boost of 5 - 30%.
So if we have 30 FPS, with 20% boost it gives us 36... and maybe with the new hotfix another few FPS... yep yep... should work out!Or am I just to hopefull AGAIN?
