No I have not, seeing how well ICD7 has been, plus haven't had a need to do any repastes.

Thanks for the replies guys. That's good to know. However, is it necessary to install thermal paste on a new laptop? Also, Dallers, do you mind sharing the program you are using to measure your CPU core temperatures/status from your screen shot?

There's no need to repaste a new laptop unless you hare having heat problems. The adage if it ain't broken, don't fix it still applies ;).

    Hey guys,

My G73's GPU has been running constantly at 84 degrees Celsius.

It starts cool and within 20 minutes it hits 84 degrees and stays there. Sometimes, it ventures farther if the weather is hot. Obviously, it needs repasting.

Everything else about it is amazing.

I don't think I could do it myself. What are my options? I don't want to send the laptop for a new one (if that's even possible) because I don't want to deal with reinstalling everything.

I live in Los Angeles, btw.

Have you tried cleaning the vents first. People tend to jump to repasting when it's not necessary. Oh and 84 is when idle or gaming?

84 is when idle. When gaming it goes over 100. It has even shut down on me a couple times, while I was playing a game. No other problems, though. (I had the GSOD but updated all the BIOS /firmware, etc, and now it's perfect)

I guess I could try the vents, but I don't know how. I'm a college student and I grew up with Mac computers. My knowledge/expertise has always been with software. When it comes to hardware, I know it's not my field.

Do you know of any good instruction pages for cleaning the vents? Pictures would be essential for me. I'm guessing the best way to clean them would be to open up the entire thing, but I'll try using compressed air first.

I really don't want to brick this beauty.

Also, if the vents are the problem, wouldn't both fans be running fast?

Only the right-side fan runs loud (and it's really noisy, all the time).

My CPU is averaging at about 64-68 degrees Celsius. Isn't that normal?

Here: YouTube - ‪G73 clean out‬‏. You'll see it's easy. Even macs get dusty and should be cleaned you know :p. Heck, don't get me started on the macbook pro's thermal design or i'll be ranting all day long...

Anyways, seeing both your idle CPU and GPU temps, my guess is dust. The chance of the thermal paste degrading on both components at the same time is pretty slim.

YES! Just before you posted that, I had just finished blowing into the vents with CO2. I didn't open it up, but so much dust was flying all over the place! A few times, dust flew out the USB/etc ports, even flying out from the disc tray! I basically just inserted the long red tube into each of the slots in the vent and made the fan spin lightly. Depending on the slot I used, lots of dust would fly out that same exhaust, just on the opposite side. I then blew some air into the keyboard (mostly to clean but who knows) and also into the ports, especially to clean. Even then, dust flew from the ports. There was so much dust.

I think this is a miracle. My dorm room was especially dusty so it was suffocating this Asus. I'm back home now but I'll still be sure to dust regularly.

    Idle temps are now constantly...

    GPU: 60 degrees Celsius (300/1000MHz @.95V)
CPU: 41-45 degrees Celsius depending on the core

    YEAAA!!

Reducing all temperatures by over 24 degrees Celsius, instantly and with minimal effort, and for free? This is truly extraordinary. I wish I had done this sooner! My anxiety/stress left with the dust! Thank you tijo!

Me too , i messed up my main speakers as well .
i think the method is feasible , depending on the power output of the subwoofer hooked to real-tech . or maybe the powersource can come from the usb near the subwoofer ?

Helps if you quote which post you are referring to fella, I was assume you mean you damaged the small connector for the 2 lancing speakers during your repaste attempt?

Its a bit too late now but I made a small movie here as I have repasted 12 times and not broken it, pulling it out of the socket is too much pressure on the small amount of solder holding it in place you must lever it out. The only way to repair this will be to see if you can solder the connector back onto the mobo but it would most likely require an RMA or if out of warranty a tech to do this for you. A new audio plug might otherwise be required as well.
