The memory pad they use is pretty good. I have been using my laptop since May 8th, 2010 and opened it up 1/29/11. The pads were in good condition and I had no problems when I took off the heatsink.

Strange i got my G73JH 02.12.2010 and out of the box my temps were at idle 52c and load 73c. When i bought it i orderd some IC Diamond 7 to as i had read about the heat problems. Temps have been the same so far.

It would be pointless to repaste? Strange is if i go over 800/1100 i get anomalies on the screen. They look like generated by heat. Seen same anomalies on my desktop when overheating. ( green spots on screen and green object in games)

What you think ? ....to repaste or not to repaste.. :D

If you are getting weird artifacts that could be an indication that the memory is getting too hot or bad memory.

Ok, I just got my IC7 in the mail today and I'm ready to repaste. Quick question for those of you who also used IC7: did your "syringe" come sealed or just capped? I ordered mine from Amazon.com from a seller named Platinum Micro, Inc. (very slow shipping, I don't recommend them). It arrived in a bubble envelope but the original packaging had been removed and the "syringe" had a cap but it wasn't sealed. With products packaged in tubes I'm used to having to cut the tip off so this struck me as odd. Do they always come this way?

This sounds normal. Mine came the same way. Also the amount they give you looks very small, but a tube of ICD7 will go a long way. Here is what mine looked like...

The pen marks how much was actually in there. I've repasted my G73 4 times (all 3 extra ones where wasted effort just trying to get lower temps), I also applied it 2x and wiped it off just to see how it applied. I also pasted my i3-530 desktop. I think I have enough left for one more GPU/CPU. So you should be able to get about 8 uses out of the tube.

I would recommend you shoot for a 3-5mm ball, if it is bigger it will not really matter. All 4 of my repastes used different amounts and the temps were all within 0.5C of each other.

You guys should just buy the 22 gram Ceramique syringe and save yourselves a lot of money. You'll lose maybe a couple of degrees.

Check out this TIM roundup. It's probably the best I've seen, with some excellent testing methodology.

I like ICD for the thickness, and the lack of curing time... It's totally worth it to me, considering how often I repaste.

Thanks for the reply ValkerieFire, and thanks for the excellent newb's guide. I just finished my repaste with the IC7. Took about 1.5 hours but I took my time and followed the BTO video and ValkerieFire's newb's guide. It really wasn't too bad. Before repasting FurMark could only run maybe 5 minutes before thermal shutdown but now I've been running FurMark for an hour and it's hanging right around 90 so I'm satisfied. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread without which I wouldn't have wanted to try this project. :D

Going to do a repaste tonight after work.

Looking through this post has been a great help but I was just wondering can you repaste the GPU and CPU without having to dissassemble the entire laptop?

Risky business but at the end of the day once its done its done I guess and I can clean the entire inside out so its like a new laptop.

Maybe its just because I like fiddling with things. Yes I think so :D

I have used mx-4, it's nice. Good consistency, easy application. I havn't used it on my g73, but I would recommend it. It's def. thick enough.

I used ICD7 before on my g73. But a user from the AW forum doesn't recommend it using on the gpu die because it scratches something off and it leaves burn marks? Is this true?

Eh. it's got some grit, so it shines up the heatsink if you squish it around or take it off and repaste again. And that's a good thing.

I have MX-3 on my G73 and it works just as well as ICD. The main concern is APPLICATION APPLICATION APPLICATION. I just had to repast a desktop due to the Intel P67 chipset issue and used MX-3 on both. The first build temps were fine, but at disassembly it was clear I used too much. On the second assembly the temps are about 5^C lower (yes BIOS settings the same and every other component but MB same). So, the message is use the recommended amount.

ICD doesn't have a problem with exceeding the recommended amount, so long as you get the right tension/pressure on it. Same, IIRC with MX-4. Not quite the same with a thin paste, like AS5

I have repasted the GPU of my Asus G73Jh-A2 with Arctic Silver 5 past 2 days but the result was not good as the ideal temp now is around 80 degree celsius. Do you guys have any idea what is happening here? :(

@Jeffrey1987 a high idle temp is a bad sign, but AS5 takes a little while to set in ("cure"). More important is your load temp - is it better or worse?

The obvious advice is to try again - maybe with a different technique. Make sure to thoroughly clean the GPU's integrated heatsink and external heatsink with alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Any remaining residue from thermal paste will hamper the thermal conductivity.

Also make sure that you have solid contact with the heatsink. But don't overtighten the screws...

The load temp (gaming) is around 100 degree celsius. It is better than before as it can reached 110 degree celsius. I have clean the GPU and heat plate with ArctiClean before I reapply the paste with spread method. I do heard from others that saying using grain method is better?

Yes as Mr Groceries says try again even with no curing when I used AS5 many times I only saw a max idle of 52oC.

Firstly check HWINFO and make sure you have reconnected your GPU Fan if you are idling at 80oC!

If not make sure that you have not dislodged any of your thermal pads over the memory modules. You should have two 6-7cm strips over the Vram and also have a square pad and a small rectangle pad over the memory controllers on the fork shaped piece of the heatsink at the bottom.

If you have spread the paste out with a credit card try using just a pea shaped lump of compound in the centre of the chip and just reseat the heatsink as when you screw it in from each corner the paste will be spread out. I tested using the credit card coating of compound and noticed sections of the GPU did not touch the heatsink because the layer was too thin.

No need for a sad face matey repasting is probably the funnest part of a laptop for me :) If you have done it once you should have no problems.

Again though when you open it up make sure that you have all of the memory pads in place they could have dislodged when you reattached the heatsink they are only stickied onto it and do come off.

Dont use the Credit card method with this heatsink either it was raised for me by the thick pads use the Pea method as displayed HERE only 3-4mm is needed and just reseat the heatsink and make sure all the screws are tight but NOT overtightened.

Unless you live in an oven you should not be idling at 80oC dont leave it like that or it could get worse and you could cause damage as I said you may have dislodged a memory module pad which may not show up at first but another poster the other day played a game for an hour and suddenly the screen went white and he had burned out one of the Vram needing a new card. He opened it up and the thermal pad had folded over itself.

Try again with the pea method and post back after. Take your time when dissassembling there is no hurry to repaste quickly with AS5 its not a thick TIM.

It would also help if we knew all three temps. As for the high temps, maybe you should try a thicker TIM such as ICD7.

try opening the bottom panel and then blowing through the vents with canned air.

i was idling at 77C and overheating on running any 3D games, but just blowing air in the vents lowered both numbers by 30. now it doesnt even hit 77 on many games

With that ambient temperature that sounds very good for Arctic Silver 5, if you live in quite hot conditions might be a good idea to do any future repastes with IC7 and you will see lower results but considering you dropped 16oC in one repaste clearly making the effort was worth it. Did you clean out any dust as well?

Do a good long stress with Furmark now to see your max temps and then let it cure for 200 hours before retesting again and post your GPU temps using HWINFO32 on here if you can.

Stability is the one you want.

Fire it up with Dynamic background, post, burn, extreme burn, x4/x8 MSAA and keep an eye on the temps with HWINFO32. Those are max settings so it will push it to the limits that is what you want to see really how high it can go when you max it out.

If it creeps 100oC you might want to cancel the test and try with normal burn in, not all can handle the extreme its very hard on the GPU. I was hitting max temps of 94oC when I used AS5 however my ambient temp was 5oC lower than yours so if you stay under 100oC then your sorted.

I've got a list of people with "hot" chips in my signature. It seems that the people who get low temps (Dallers and Chastity) are quite vocal, but the majority of people end up with much higher temps...

    1. Stability Test
    2. Extreme Burning Mode
    3. Standard Size = 1920 x 1080
    4. MSAA = 8X
    5. Post Processing

Well, i repasted with MX-2 a while ago and i have temps similar to those DCx has. Now i'm waiting on some thermal pads, finally found 6W/mK ones that didn't cost 25$ to ship to Canada ( i ordered 0.5mm and 1mm thickness just in case the 0.5mm are too thin) and ICD7. I'll probably repaste in two weeks since i'm moving next week. Anyways i'll take pictures of the job this time and run furmark once i'm done repasting and post the results in Chastity's repaste thread.

Anyways, in regards to the hot cards, weren't the c0x cards running hotter than the c1x ones?

Nice to hear you got the pads :) im using the 0.5mm ones and im very happy with them no problem but it all depends on how the heatsink seats so you probably did right to get both just in case and 6w/mk is very good thats what I have.

How long is the thermal paste (IC Diamond 7) suppose to be effective? Do you have to repaste every other month or something?

Far from it and totally the opposite the unwritten rule with IC7 is that if you dont want to worry about application and never have to repaste for many years if not past the life of the laptop then use it.

I personally have repasted so many times that my GPU heatsink screws are cross threaded so luckily my last repaste was the best I have seen so far using IC7 because that bad boy is never coming off again :D its welded on!
