This is terrific stuff.
The thing I find interesting is the fact that the 6970m is that cheap.
At that price Asus should hold off on the G74 and just give us a new version of the G73 equipped with this card. There's no reason why it should cost more than the current G73SW-A1. -
All the gamers need this 3D-stuff at 20fps!
I'm interested, if this GTX560 comes in a stock MXM-factor. Or will Asus tinker their own cards again and again? ^^ -
I bet the connector is standard MXM and the rest is an abomination like the 460m... they can save money with a bigger PCB. Needs less layers for example. But I really hope the die is placed regularly, otherwise trying to upgrade it will be almost impossible.
-
Agreed! It's prbly more profitable to add a new line now, and the G-73 has already been through a few updates - JH to JW to SW, etc. The new look makes it a new laptop. Sadly, the G74 looks pretty ugly to me. The hinge drops off weirdly where we have a continuous geometry, and the vents doubled up on the center look like a badly copied clevo, instead of our recessed, trim-looking vents =D
-
yeah, g73sw is more appealing
-
Well done that man!
-
And now Canada Post is on strike. So they're using fedex. =/
I WANT MY CARD. -
FedEx is faster than CanadaPost anyway.
-
Canadian ay? I think if the upgrade goes well, you'll hear from me right away...
-
Crap, I ordered a bunch of stuff today -_- I guess I won't get anything because of canada post.
Well, nice to see it's a canadian that's trying the 6970m
-
Lol if it work in the JH then a few days and MXM-upgrade.com will have overload of 6970 orders. I know im ready to order.....just waiting for the start you buying sign
Might even see the new G74 sales fail as ppl will be buying old JH models. It will be worth more then gold i tell you ....gold.
And back to reality. Good luck with the swap when you get the card
-
The result soon to come will not only confirm the 6970M purchase for me, it will also mean that I require the 920xm upgrade.
The outcome of your experiment could leave me in a lot of debt. Dont do it!!
-
Can always sell something ...a few organs here and there.
-
Yeah, the strike sucks. Especially if it works, i live like 2 hours away from where they ship those suckers. Normally, i'd get it within 1 to 3 business days. From my experience, Canada Post are gentler with the packages than fedex or purolator hehe.
Unless i'm mistaken, they are still on a rotating strike so the services are still assured at least, my new tube of ICD might arrive late because of that though. -
I need both my kidney's and have no need for an IPAD 2 which has caused 3 people so far to sell theirs!
-
Same here. Since I am home from off-shore I've got both my kidney's in RAID 0 for optimum speed. But well, as you know with a RAID 0 array, if I loose one ..........
-
Just make sure you keep the RAID driver updated with lots of fresh water....and we have drifted off topic again because of me.
6970M in a JH....The waiting game....
-
lol, I'm out on east coast USA,
I just bought it from upgradeyourlaptop on ebay (without soldered posts) and he ships with Canada post by default. He did say fedex could be faster, so, fingers crossed.
Much cheaper than MXM-Upgrade, I actually toyed with a few "best offer" values and landed one
Don't think it'd be ethical of me to say what, though
-
As I am in the UK I will probably have to fork out about £300 to pick one up so I have already applied for an interest free credit card so I can pick up the 6970M and 920Xm I have decided. I am really anxious now I really dont see how this cannot work and at the same time knowing the way Asus create laptops fear that it wont work.
-
Well, i anticipate possible fan problems (oh please, whatever gods exist, let me be wrong
) but the display working.
-
For 17260+ 3DMark06 points with the XM I dont care about the fans
-
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to stand the fan at full speed all the time. When I'm in a game, I concentrate so it's fine, but i use my G73 for my M.Sc.A. as well and i don't want to be distracted by the fan when I'm working on that. Obviously, if there is a fan problem but the display works, the motivation to find a way to control the fans will be there for those who have sufficient tech knowledge.
-
I could live with it being just the fan.
RBE might let you get a grip on control, and I'm sure the community here will be able to swing into action on a vbios tweak
-
Remember, both fans were running at fullspeed (4400rpm)!
This is loud.
I don't know, how this hardware check is implemented. Even with the original Asus vBIOS the fan issue appeared. I hope, there will be a screen with 6970 at least. -
I came from the G70S which literally had both fans running flat out with the 8700M GT SLI in it. Cramped and hot.
Biggest issue I think will be the jump from 50watt to 100watt. -
Question while I wait: I'm on the 211 BIOS, should I go to 213 before trying the swap? Think it'd make a difference?
-
I would be surprised if it made a difference.
As for the TDP difference, is there official data from AMD considering the TDP of the 6970m. Like @tilla said in his MSI 5870 in the JH post, the Asus 5870 might very well have a higher TDP than 50W considering the voltages it's running at. Besides, even at stock clocks, the 6970m will be a step up from a 5870. I wouldn't mind undervolting it (if it can be done) and running at stock clocks for lower temps. -
got my tracking ##, its otw! =D
-
The suspense is killing me
.
-
Lets just hope its not as much of a let down as Duke Nukem and more of a jaw gaping Witcher 2.
-
If there is a fan problem then why not just oldschool a fanspeed regulator to the case ?
Cant wait to hear the results
got my credit card ready lol
-
0_0 Estimated delivery, the 17th. I'll have your info by saturday! (if the delivery is true)
-
I have never heard of delivery being made on a weekend. While they do ship to final destination on a Saturday, they only deliver from Mondays to Fridays.
-
17th Is not Saturday, it will be deliverd Friday and HE will give us the result Saturday ^^
-
This could be good timing when I hit the town saturday for my mates birthday I will secretly be celebrating the purchase of my 6970M! hip hip!
-
I see. I guess I misunderstood the statement.
-
I don't have any hope about the 6970M working in the G73JH. If it doesn't work, I won't be disappointed, but if it works, then banzai!
-
People without hope, please leave this thread.
-
There's always hope, but after trying to get two different cards working in the JW (without success) I'm not too optimistic tbh.
-
Just like to say good luck today and we are all praying for good results
-
Also, it didn't ship from canada. It started in Watertown, NY
-
Progress? Why is this not a progress update! Has it arrived?!
Its like Christmas and I haven't even got anything
-
At the risk of repeating myself, the suspense if killing me
.
-
wasn't he supposed to try things out tomorrow? or did I missread something O/O
-
Yeah, we're supposed to get the results tomorrow.
-
Tomorrow at the latest. As soon as I have the card in my hands, I'm popping open Morpheus (my G73
) and trying it out. If it boots, I'll post here (in this thread) that it works, then create a new thread shortly after with a more in-depth description of the process, and post a link here. You'll know in a few hours if it works right off the bat or not. You'll know by tomorrow even more.
If it doesn't, I'll be working on it for a bit, check installation to make sure, then put the 5870 back in, come here, and let you know. -
One thing is certain if it does work your rep will increase pretty rapidly.
-
I'm in it for Morpheus
Upgrade a G73-jh to 6970?
