    Well said.

This IS the only issue I have left with the G73JH. This has been a roller coaster of a ride. At this point I feel that I've spent at least half my time owning this model troubleshooting it's many "OUT of the BOX" problems. I also find it disturbing that with the problems out of the box Asus hasn't formerly apologized or provided some level of compensation for putting us through this BS. I am so dissapointed with Asus.

What makes things so bad is that in the past Asus has screwed me over with their so called RMA's....it makes me fill like I'm on my own. Regardless of the manufacturer warranty :(

Thank GOD for the community at NBR forums and Gary Key & Team.

You do realize that a class action lawsuit would not fix anything, right? The reward for a successful class action is usually much smaller than plaintiffs expect or want, typically a very small payment ($10 or so) or perhaps a coupon for a discount on a future product. A class action would not give you a non-glitchy trackpad; only the engineers (supposedly) at work on the issue can do that.

I'm not saying your anger is not justified, and venting to a sympathetic audience is all well and good. If you're serious about a class action, go talk to a lawyer. Just don't expect it (or the threat of one) to fix the trackpad. If you really want to send a message to ASUS, vote with your wallet. Stop buying their products, and write to them letting them know that is why you no longer support the company.

So any news on this? I really wanna be able to use my touch-pad. I feel like i don't have a touchpad at all. Sometimes i feel like selling the laptop and getting a dell. But i don't think anyone would buy it with a faulty touch-pad :(.

Mine was OK for a while... a few days. Yesterday though I just had to give up using it. I am beginning to think it is more of a hardware issue. Has anyone sent theirs in for the touchpad problem and got it back fixed?

I see now why they include a mouse with the G73.

I am starting to think its a hardware issue as well. I can see this happens when the laptop is a bit hot. if the laptop is pretty cool this doesn't happen.

Mine does it out of nowhere...usually after prolonged use. What I've also come to notice is...if I press the touchpad's left and right rocker buttons below repeatedly I can temporarly fix this problem....if the unit is warm this method doesn't always work.

I have started the RMA process. If a solution isn't found soon I will send off my unit to Milpitas, CA in hope of a permanent solution on 12/1/10 :(

This problem is killing my resale value.

I've noticed that the trackpad is very finicky when it comes to your skin, so keep your hands washed and nice and dry and clean and it will usually work fine. Try to keep your trackpad very clean because even the slightest touch or anything on it will mess with it. My touchpad was a little dirty one day and it refused to work, make sure it's nice, dust/dirt free and wipe it down if it has smudges because that will REALLY mess with it. I've been on updated drivers for awhile now and the trackpad has been pretty solid, sans one or two small incidents. But yeah, just following that and it's been perfectly fine for awhile now. The touchpad is super sensitive to everything it seems so keeping it clean and keeping the drivers updated should work fine...for the most part.

I understand why your thinking that, kinda like all the class action suits for memory , where each person that bought a stick of memory which cost $75 ended up getting a $10 coupon, I really think your wrong about this, this kind of situation works out differently, when you have bought a high priced item and it is not functioning, more then likely Asus would be forced to fix or replace the defective item with a comparable product or refund money, it wont be $10 like you say, kind of like the lemon law where the dealer is forced by law to by back the car. especially with such a limited production item such as this and the size of the company Asus

And about voting with your wallet, think about it for most people these are very high priced items which could not be afforded to be bought twice, so like for me i cant foresee being able to buy another one for a very very long time, so sending them a message with my wallet...... they would not get the message for many years from me. so i dont think that would have much effect, the only way to hurt them financially would be to get the word out to the public about their products so people would think twice about buying one now.

Ahh I dont think you ever had the same issue, with this issue your hand and touchpad could be completely clean and just gently touch the pad a not move your finger at all and the mouse would shake and jump from one place to another, not to mention this will happen after every mouse feature has been turned off and set to the LEAST amount of sensitivity. So thanks for your advice but i really dont think its part of the issue

Also when i first got my new G73 I was so worried about it getting dirty I cleaned it every day and never touched it with dirty hands but yet it had issues right out of the box, and I've had 12 notebooks in my life and have never had this issue with a touchpad

I agree too... My hands are pretty clean and so is the touchpad and it just stops workin.... Just goes crazy..... I uninstalled the touchpad drivers and it kinda has the same problem... So it might not be the drivers but maybe in the bios, or just hardware failure.... It would be nice at least if asus could confirm it as hardware failure so i could just rma it. Has any of you gotten this issue fixed with rma????

Weighing in here, and ---MAYBE--- to provide some help.

VERY frustrating this touchpad issue; and the fact that it's intermittent, happens (usually) after PC has been on for a while (and working properly) has been maddening. I've even noticed different performance when I switch hands - I'm a lefty, but sometimes when the T-pad starts acting up, I switch to my right hand, and voila, it works (sometimes). Try to articulate this problem, and these *possible* solutions, and you even sound crazy to yourself.

I've upgraded drivers; I've downgraded driver, I've removed drivers. I've enabled Synaptics features, and disabled them. All with inconsistent results.

And though i didn't contact Asus on this issue, while addressing another issue, i asked them a) have you been hearing about this issue, and b) would fixing it require me to return the PC to you. The respective answers were NO and YES. So I've been dreading an RMA, and thus using an external mouse, but as others have said, I shouldn't HAVE to. When (especially) the new Synaptics software is running well, you can actually get away with NOT using a mouse and having a pretty good experience -- when the touchpad is working that is.

    BUT GUESS WHAT?

As of a couple days ago, the touchpad has WORKED - without error, virtually non-stop - I've had maybe one 'glitch' in several days. So now you ask - "What the heck did you do?" And my response is: Nothing. At least nothing related directly to the touchpad issue.

So I thought about any significant changes that I may have made that could have 'fixed' this problem, and while I'm always tinkering with one thing or another, I THINK that I can relate the solution to a seemingly unrelated fix, and I offer this not because I am certain that it is the solution, but so that others can perhaps test and help make that determination.

So what I did was to implement the vBIOS fix that recently came out -- the one designed to eliminate the dreaded grey screen of death (GSOD). After implementing that fix, and updating my ATI drivers, I have not had the touchpad problem. I'll indicate my system setup below for reference.

Like I said, I can't be certain that this had ANYTHING to do with why the touchpad is now working, but I'm sure that a few weeks ago, nobody would have believed someone telling them to turn on their 'moodpad' served as a viable remedy.

If you haven't implemented this solution, i would recommend it either way. It's a bit of a pain b/c it's a BIOS flash, but it's worth it. You can find it at G73Jh GSOD Vbios Update .

Check it out, install, and let all of us know if it helps, or if i only experienced an anomoly.

    About my machine
    G73JH - non-blue-ray
    80 gb SSD
    500 gb HDD
    Core i7
    Bios version 211
All drivers at least up to date or more recent than ASUS site
Power4Hybrid software REMOVED b/c it prevents you from saving personalized appearance settings

    Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to detail your experiences. Your 'possible' solution could apply to my situation. I am on the 209 bios and have not flashed the video card either. I guess what we need is to hear from someone who has done both but still has issues with the touchpad. Let's hope your onto something.

I'll share my "temporary" fix when my touchpad goes ballistic. Take both of your hands, and using 3 fingers from both hands, press down on the touchpad. Your fingers should look like this (left hand) \ / (right hand), one on the right side of the pad and the other on the left. Press hard enough to see a little bit of a flex. Now test it out, try scrolling again. Voila. What could this mean? I smell a hardware / contact / voltage issue.

thats impossible for me. Unfortunately, I have this disease called sweaty hands and it never goes away :(

Unfortunately, I have the lastest bios and vbios installed and I still get the issue. I've also had the issue before the update. I haven't tried the latest ati drivers but I doubt that has anything to do with the touch pad.

Did Asus magically fix this through some hidden update? Mine is just magically works. Been using the Touch-pad for a couple of hours now. It just randomly started to work. Mine was pretty messed and now its stable. Wonder how long will it last like this.

One quick note tho. I dropped my laptop yesterday. After that it has been working awesomely. Damn i am happy now.

If that is the case, then it would support a hypothesis we have in regards to why it is "flaky" to begin with, and that is due to some sort of electrical "short" of the touchpad.

Now, this short could be something as simple as static buildup due to the rubberized exterior. Or it could be a loose grounding point inside the laptop, or a misplaced grounding point allowing a capacitive buildup.

I do believe these are all things that should be looked into, and who knows, maybe Asus already knows all of this, but they can't stomach the "wave" of RMAs they would get if they advertised this as the issue.

What they need to do is figure out a fix and then issue a recall to fix all the laptops... But, we all know that will never happen as they can't even agree to pay for a software upgrade to support the laptop properly, how can they be expected to recall tons of units to fix something?

Interesting... my touchpad has been fine for a couple of days as well. I thought it might have had something to do with the addition of the trackball I bought. I do not have Asus updates turned on so that would not be it for me. I suppose it could have been a Windows update though. I have not dropped my laptop either.

I used my 'laptop' on my lap last night for 3 hours or so and the touchpad worked perfectly. It is wonderful, I am not sure what I did other than install the wireless trackball, which I leave on when I am using the touchpad.

In an effort to understand why my touchpad all of a sudden decided to work perfectly I took a look at what programs got installed around the time it started working correctly. Of course I do not know exactly when it fixed itself but I know roughly that it was when I installed the Logitech SetPoint software. I see Microsoft Visual C++ got installed about the same time. I am not sure where that came from...

I am sorry to say my touchpad has returned to its usual crappy self. One thing I did notice that changed as well is the idle tmp for the GPU has dropped to 53C. The whole time the touchpad was working fine the GPU stayed at 62 or 63. Any ideas as to why it would drop 10 degrees? The computer has been in the same room at the same temperature. I have not noticed any difference in fan behaviours. I am back to using my trackball even when my machine is on my lap.

It went wonky only for a minute or two. It seems to have straightened itself out. Very weird.

I haven't noticed any significant problems on mine, but I did clean the touchpad recently and it took a good 3 minutes for it to stop bugging out. It must be extremely sensitive to moisture.

Ive been watching this thread for a while now hoping for a fix, but I personally think ASUS does have a fix for this issue but they do not want to deal with it because of the amount of RMA's they would receive. What I dont understand is when I bought this laptop, I did not have this problem. When they fixed the issue where the battery got low the processor would run slow, this became an issue.

Im highly enraged about this problem and it almost makes me wish I had of just went with alienware. If we didnt have this problem with the JH's I would honestly say this is the best laptop created but I guess Ill take that back for now because my old laptop with a intel celeron has a working touchpad....

Mine was pretty much unusable from the time I purchased my laptop. Lately though it has worked quite well. I am not going to say it is fixed but it has worked pretty well for the last week and half, I am not sure why. One thing I have done, and it seems to make a difference is to clean my touchpad and finger with the alcohol/water solution I use on my laptop screen and glasses. I am a compulsive hand washer and I wonder if there is some residue from the liquid soap I use that screws up the touchpad. It is the inconsistency that makes it very hard to nail down. I have had it stop working with my right finger and tried using my left and it works perfectly, which kind of supports my soap theory.

    add me to the list...

So ive had my g73 for a few months and I did majority of gaming w/ a mouse. Well last night i played w/o a mouse for the first time and everything was working just fine. It worked fine until this afternoon. It just started acting up resizing all my browser text as well as desktop icons.

Still no solutions for this eh? Im currently back to the mouse trying out different versions of the drivers. Was gona update to 211 but people w/ 211 have the issue too.

What are the odds that this is hardware???

It has been a few days since I have posted on my touchpad issue. My JH definitely still has the problem. I have determined it is not a cleaning issue. When it went wonky the last two times cleaning had no bearing on its behaviour. It is so nice when it does work correctly though.

That is NOT even close to a viable solution.

This is a hardware issue. Hopefully they can fix it via software, if not they will be getting a TON of RMAs...

Groceries, is NBR being paid by Asus for advertising? It would explain your defensive stance towards them as of late. Otherwise I just don't get it.

    I love conspiracy theories. :D

I've had a problem with the touchpad bugging out a few times, and cleaning it made it work fine. But I'm on Linux anyway, and this sounds like it's partially a synaptics driver issue. Ruling out a dirty surface on an extremely sensitive touchpad seems like a good idea to me.

I have to agree with Tall red.

Cleaning? clean what? As i mentioned i have NEVER used the touchpad in the 2 months ive had it nor do i ever eat while using the laptop or anything like that. Even when i started using the touchpad my fingers were always clean. And just by looking at the touchpad, its clean as can be. Simply wiping it with a rag wont solve it. Ive had an older hp laptop that had a really really dirty touchpad..im talkin dried stains of who knows what RIGHT on the touchpad itself and the damn thing still works flawlessly with all that crap on the TP.

I understand there's a lot of frustration involved with this issue. My suggestion is not claiming to be an end-all fix, just a step in the troubleshooting process. I have noticed that dust or moisture will throw off my touchpad.

Edit: There's a beta bios here, some people are reporting that it helps with the touchpad issue (or maybe not?). It's still too early to tell, but if you're feeling lucky it may be worth a shot. I've flashed my G73 without issue, if you do it make sure to be safe and freshly format a FAT memory stick and put the BIOS image on it, then flash from DOS or from within the BIOS with easy flash.

Best of luck to everyone with this issue.

Over the summer I had an rma on my laptop, they flashed the 209 BIOS after I had put the 211 on the laptop. I didnt know this till two weeks ago, so I put the 211 BIOS back on my laptop. one week later asus update pops up, I hit update (theres updates for like almost every driver). touch pad works now, I now have the best laptop in my possession trouble free....finally. I recommend everyone do the same now. This time it isnt just a temporary fix, this has been working for sometime now.
    Good luck, Mr.Jones.

EDIT: btw the asus update takes forever to install so even if it doesn't look like its running, just leave it running.

I posted this fix for the touchpad on the missing keystroke thread, I should maybe have posted it here instead...

If you have tried the latest bios, ATK package and Synaptics driver and you are still having touchpad issues try doing this.

It seems to have worked for me. My touchpad would stop working when I typed or if I picked up and moved my machine while it was on my lap. The tp would stop because of the flexing of the palmrest.

    Cheers

Thought I would post this here should anyone else have the issues that I faced with my touchpad and you mentioning flexing the palmrest was very similiar to my problem.

Running latest ATK/Synaptics and BIOS 213 along with trying every way to tweak the settings still left me with the sticking, zooming and iratic behavior for a good month after I got my laptop. Went round in circles trying to fix it.

Its been a month since I repasted my GPU and while inside noticed the annoying yellow sticky tape around the touchpad film was causing it to tilt at a funny angle along with sticking to the left touchpad button and the left of the touchpad casing.

I whipped 3 of the yellow sticky tapes off noticing that they did nothing to hold or support the touchpad film and this has left me with a perfectly normal working touchpad with no behavioral problems or sticking. My problem may just be isolated to my laptop but my symptoms were the same as the driver related issues which they did not fix and thought I would share this if anyone else continues to face issues after updating.

Thing is that every TP driver or video driver I tried makes some sort of difference in how the TP reacts....sometimes a big difference but not 100% fixed. The latest drivers are the best....15.2.11.1....for me...and ATI 8.821.0.0....

As mentioned my case could be isolated but I noticed differences as well with updated drivers only it didnt fix the problem, every now and then my touchpad would start sticking and I find it quite a coincidence that the sticking was actually related to the sticky tape. :D

It is certainly an elusive problem. My tp has worked quite well for about 3 weeks. I did have a few incidents where it was back to its old ways but overall it has been good. The last time it acted up I thought the coreplast I had inserted as a wedge might be compressing so I removed it and put in a very dense rubber foam instead. After the repair it acted up again... go figure. I then reinstalled the 1.008 (number might be wrong) ATK package and things have worked well since. I do not know if the installation did anything or if it was just a coincident.

Whatever caused the original problem does still revisit on occasion...

    Hello everyone :)

I finally got rid of that extremely annoying TP issue :)

I'm now on my fourth days with my new TP and no more skipping mouse etc. You probbably know what i mean :D

Resently i ordered some new Touchpads for my G73JH one for the G73JW and one for the G73JH. They was 100% identical, so no point in odering two. I only did this to be 100% sure of getting one that worked lol.

But anyways i have now installed the new Touchpad and it works perfectly, i immediatly felt a huge differencd in the feel and responsivnes. So it was definetly worth the money and the wait, and it only took about 40 minutes to replace it.

It think it was very easy to replace, but i do have some experience fixing things but anyone can do this with a bit of patience. The TP was taped so it was abit hard to get it off, but i hated that TP so much so i just ripped it off. And i think it's very important to clean with som alcohol before attaching the new TP.

I'm not sure if i got a newer model but it doesent matter because it works, here is the model numbers if anyone thinks about doing the same.

Synaptics TM1254 (920-001308-01RevB) Originaly installed by Asus.

    Synaptics TM1254-002 (920-001752-01RevA) Ordered from Asuparts.eu

The shipping was very fast, reason my shipment got delayed was that i ordered an extra hhd bracket. But this was not i stock, so i cancelled it and got the TP 5 Days later.

I did take some pictures along the way so i will post later. I really hope this can help someone, because that TP problem has been extremely annoying. I much rather have a crack in my display :D

Btw i have tried alot of tips and trick to fix this without replacing it but nothing worked, so in my oppinion this is a defect in the Touchpad and no software or bios upgrade will ever fix it.

Finally i can start enjoying this Beast :)

Here's some pictures i took along the way. It won't bother me no moore :)

    Good Luck to you Guys.

See all that poorly positioned sticky tape crap on your first picture that was why mine was not working! whipped that off and it fixed my touchpad.

Had touch-pad issues so I sent it in for an RMA finally.

Received it back with a still failing touch-pad and screen damage as light bleeding. Sent it in for a second RMA a few weeks ago, received it back with a newly failing screen light bleed, and an erratic track-pad.

Have tried everything suggested on these forums and beyond at some point or another to no avail. More than anything it's frustrating that the RMA process is unable to produce a working machine.

    Hey Dallers,

A quick question regarding your trackpad issue...
Did you simply just pull the tape off, and that was it? Worked perfectly after that?
    Did you reapply any tape?
    Thanks,

I had around 4 pieces of tape around the touchpad see the gents picture above however mine were similiar to his all over the place at angles I pulled off one piece that was sticking to my left mouse button and both bits left and right and replaced the top of the laptop.

Works perfectly now and no sticking. Not had a problem since and I factory reset earlier this week so im using the standard ATK and synaptics drivers for 2 days and not even a winkle :D

Take a look at yours when you open it the tape seems to do more harm than good as the film doesnt move without it anyway and it was holding mine at a funny angle.

    Thank you kindly!

Could you point me to the thread which describes how to dismantle the laptop; or, at least as far as getting to the stage described above?

    Thanks again,
