    This is what you need:

    Here

Although if you havent done it before be very careful with the keyboard if you take your time and are very gentle as you pry up the keyboard from the top levering from left and right you will not bend it as he does in this video pop the 5 pins first that hold it in place. Ive removed mine 4 times and its still in perfect nick the sticky tape on the keyboard is the only annoying thing when dissassembling the G73.

i forgot to mention one thing about the touchpad, after i ripped it off i did see alot of finger prints on the chassy on the underside of the TP and they wasnt mine. This can be a very good reason for it to cause alot of trouble i think, but sadly it is difficult to get it off without breaking it, maybe if heated up it's easier.

But anyways my TP still works and believe me, i will report back if the starts again.

But i strongly believe the only solution is to replace it, it's a strange feeling everytime i use the TP. Everytime i use it i'm abit scared, and some of you know why.

But it still works perfectly, i dont even need to disable anything in the synaptics settings to get it to work as i want. All the functions seem to work as they were ment to do.

I'm willing to bet some dollars that the TP problem is because of a defect and i bet this never will be fixed by software upgrade or bios.

It cost me about 50£ including shipping but another 30£ in tax to get it but it's was all worth it.

Btw It still works perfectly, but everyday i'm a bit nervous for the TP to act up again.

Im thinking about dismantling the touchpad or at least cleaning off the excess tape. I watched the video... do I have to remove keyboard and sever the cables underneath before removing the face plate, or can I just unscrew and pry open faceplate directly to access the touchpad?

Also does the film under the pad have a sticky side? otherwise how can is stay put without the tape?

I tried this registry setting because I was about a hair away from using this laptop as a bat against the side of the wall. I just restarted and the mouse is actually working! I dont want to jinx it yet and can't guaruntee that it is fixed but here is the link:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/486478-fix-win7-i7-sluggish-performance.html

Anyone else traumatized from the mouse of this laptop? Now when I am on a normal one, I cant move around because it actually works, and I dont know how to use one that works anymore! :)

Well, my touchpad has been good for a long time, but over the last two weeks as the weather gets quite a bit warmer, my touchpad has been going crazy! It's not condensation (dehumidifier in the room), it's just ambient temps making it more sensitive to my palm resting NEAR it.

    Talk about frustrating.

Maybe it is the lack of humidity in the room that is the problem. I think static electricity might contribute to the tp problem.

It's been working great all winter though - the only real change is the temperature of the room, not the humidity level. A few hours ago I tried turning down the sensitivity, and it's usable again ...

I don't know, maybe heat is a factor. Do you have a G73JH? Are you on system bios 213 and ATK package 1.0008? If you have all of these things installed and it is still borked you might want to try the wedge in the left side palmrest.

I saw your wedge solution, and Dallers anti-tape solution. Since I've been good until the last week or two, I havn't got around to it. It's finals, and I've got a tonne of marking to do before I can rip apart my work machine.

The wedge fix only takes about 10 minutes to do. It does seem odd in your case that it worked well for so long and then started failing. It is a very weird problem, even before any of the software updates mine could go four or five days without an incident and then something would change and it would not go more than 5 minutes without an incident.

After all of the fixes it is now working very well. It is spring here now so the air is more humid and there is far less static electricity. I am sure some will think it is a nutty theory but I think static may play a role in the whole thing.

I hope you can get it figured out.

    Cheers

    Hello.
My touchpad never had worked corretly.
I tried all options that read in this and other forums...but this morning I decided to try the "remove tape from rear surface in the touchpad".

I see the disassemble video, and followed each step...When arrived to the rear surface touchpad, I removed all the silver tape that is there.

    Now it workw perfectly...PERFECTLY!!!

A lot of thanks for your help.

Yes, the disassembly, tape removal, and cleaning of the bottom surface worked for me too! Love having a fully functional touchpad... I love this laptop so much, and the touchpad was just a total buzzkill when everything else about it is so good.

Next upgrade for me is to grab a 1080p LCD (maybe even the 120hz non-glossy). I did add a Seagate Momentus XT drive, and boy does this thing scream now. Boot times are down to about 20 seconds from power-on to login/full desktop.

Hello, i have the same problem with the touchpad in g73jh.

Problem:Very often it freezes and when i open the moodPad I see on the left side of touchpad, a touch is being recognized, where actually nothing is touching the touchpad there. (picture here)

When you have the two finger zoom option enabled, the system recognizes two touches (your finger and the left side fake touch) and will try to zoom actual view, I suggest to turn off the two finger zoom temporary.

    When problem occurs :
I belive it is somehow connected with the high outside temperature (~26-30 celcius degrees) and moist in the room.
Also, some people say it is software. My tp was working perfectly when i had BIOS 206 and when i flashed it to 213, the problem started to occur, but i strongly believe, that it was caused by the warm season in my country, not the bios flashing.

Solutions that did not work for me:
    - moving hdd from underneath the touchpad to the other bay - not working
    - removing the underlying silver tapes (about 5) from touchpad without cleaning the bottom silver surface- not working
    - cleaning the bottom silver plane/screen of the tp with alcohol on a cotton ball - not working
    - installing all kinds of synaptics drivers: 15_2_20, 14_0_3, 14_0_10, 15_2_16 - still problem reoccurs

    Question
What is this silver screen/plane underneath the touchpad for? Can I remove it to get to the tp? picture here.
I tried to remove it, but i'm scared it will break the touchpad.

I love using touchpads and this one is the best i've ever used, when it's working correctly. I can not wait for one and final solution for this problem, because it drives me crazy when the cursor randomly freezes. I would never suggest buying this laptop, because of the tp fault! Asus, please consider confess that this tp is faulty and replace with a correctly working for everyone that woud want it.PLEASE HELP!

I read somewhere that the silver sheet over the tp is a static shield.

Like you I have tried everything to get the tp to work consistently and have had no success. The wedge fix worked for a while for me which is why I think removing the tin off the bottom might be the answer.

Yep, from what others and i gathered, it seems that the TP is registering false contact due to some physical problem. This sometimes happen to me with the G73 on my lap, the TP is rock solid on a desk though. The issue for some is definitely physical, i disassembled mine quite a few times and after one reassembly i had TP problems which disappeared after the next reassembly.

Can you please describe in detail (and pictures if possible) your wedge fix?

I was searching the forum, but couldn't somehow find the exact solution how to do this.

Removing the tin off the bottom? Can you please select on my pictures (download pictures, select and upload with your selections) which part exactly to remove?

I am really hoping on getting this finally fixed.

Everyone who has a G73JW (limited edition with 16 Gb RAM) knows that this laptop computer is extremely large and heavy (8 lbs, 17 inch screen), and is also a very expensive laptop (mine retails at $3,000.00 but I paid $2,405.14). However, mine was shipped back to me after an RMA in a very small box (it barely fits inside) with almost no packing, and of course, the casing was smashed in -- photos with date/time stamp are attached in the zip file here: http://bit.ly/ASUS-Quality-Support The reason for the RMA was that the trackpad has been broken since the very first day I received the laptop (February) --- essentially what this thread is all about.

I've spend countless hours on this, including reinstalling the OS twice, upgrading the bios, reinstalling drivers, and much more.

INCREDIBLY, not only did the RMA technicians smash my laptop casing, they DIDN'T EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM!! Yes, that's right, they simply formatted the drive, reinstalled the OS (even though my TYPED PROBLEM DESCRIPTION already states that I've done that twice), AND then shipped it back to me with the newly acquired smashed up casing, with the trackpad still messed up. So after getting fed up with the erratic touchpad behavior I finally broke down and RMA'd my G73JH with ASUS. Just got it back today with a brand new touchpad installed. (Side note: my computer is now scratched all over and I have 4 dead pixels... keep that in mind if you are thinking of sending your unit in for repairs... I'm still debating whether this was worth it or not).

Anyway, my question right now is which is the optimal driver for this model?
I downloaded Chastity's KB / Trackpad fix and in that ZIP file are two different synaptics drivers (15.2.11 & 15.2.11.1). Furthermore on Chastity's ROG driver page she links to a newer set 15.2.16.1. So which one is the one that ASUS supposedly worked closely with Synaptics to iron out the G73-specific kinks? At this point I want to install THAT driver and just leave it - forever. This has been such a frustrating process I'm hoping I can now just set it, forget it and get back to USING this laptop.

    I appreciate the help!

Sorry to hear about the dead pixels, I would suggest setting up a new RMA, and have the panel swapped at a local ASP. This way you can prolly wait while they do it. But do call back, so that it can be part of the RMA you already just did.

As for drivers, use any version that's after the one in the pack. Your new pad shouldn't have any issues at all.

BTW, can you PM me a pic of your scratched up unit?

Thanks Chastity. You are the best.

No worries on the scratches. After a comprehensive wipe down I think I've got them to a place where I can live with them.

However, the dead pixels are a different story altogether.
I may have made a bone head choice here in that I serviced my touchpad through the Geek Squad over at Best Buy. I had an RMA set up with ASUS, but nothing to ship it in so the ASUS rep suggested I use Geek Squad instead.

Now that I have pointed out the screen flaws Geek Squad wants nothing to do with the dead pixel issue. They are saying it is not their problem and that no manufacturer has a zero dead pixel policy. I informed them that ASUS actually does and that is one of the reasons I buy their machines.

Anyway, I'm not keen on going back to those guys. I guess I should just reach out to ASUS again, but I'm not looking forward to being computerless for another 2 weeks.

Getting back on topic... the new trackpad WORKS! If you are having problems with it cutting out on you erratically then I recommend getting it swapped out with a new one. Here's hoping you don't have the screen issues like I do!

    I have been dreaming of a 1080p matte B173HW01v5. :D
Any suggestions on where to grab one? I've been reading other threads and there does not appear to be a consensus on who's legit and who's not.
Is it really as easy as it sounds to swap panels? Sorry for hijacking the touchpad thread!

    Good morning touchpad problem users.

Just wanted to update my touchpad issues because I like many of you have spent countless hours, days, months trying to resolve the chronic issues with our touchpad getting stuck and annoying the hell out of us. My most recent anger was during world of tanks in which I had a dead kill shot with an explosive round on a Maus and god damn it would not fire and by the time I reached the space bar to override it I was burned. Fury like you could not imagine!!

I have attempted all of the known fixes hardware and software related some helped and my symptoms were very minor but still they would return and nothing seemed to fix the constant problems. Until I think maybe now...

I purchased an SSD and it arrived friday and after installing it and all of the software not to mention the excellent increase in responsiveness and speed I have not yet had one problem with my touchpad, no sticking, no nothing and I have all of the settings turned on in Synaptics ie touch zoom and there is no slow down at all.

I cannot and will not vouch this as a fix but ask yourself this should be pulling your hair out and have touchpad issues. Do you have an SSD? if you do and still see the issues please update here and rule out my possible fix but so far not to mention it is a worthy upgrade and maybe the extra speed provided could resolve at least some of the sticking and slowing down of the touchpad.

Another myth, could it be a permanent fix? probably not. comments from other SSD owners appreciated to support or rule out my claim.

    Hi Dallers,
would be curious, but maybe it is the point I never saw a real problem with my touchpad. What is the exact behavior of this issue?
IMHO there are some better feeling touchpads out there, but it's working for the short times I need it.

Well this is the thing some do some dont but if you purchased an SSD shortly after purchase you may not have suffered with this at all but I have used my notebook constantly over the weekend since receiving my SSD and did a lot of testing and not once have I seen a touchpad problem yet and normally after any reinstall or attempt to fix it the problems would appear within hours on my 7200RPM drive and they would stay there and intermidantly cause me problems. Since installing the cheapo Kingston - Nothing.

Can only rule this out by others who have an SSD not seeing the problems also but so far that is two of us without the issues...Could it be?

Symptoms are: sticking, acting iratic, not moving, getting stuck, slowing down, stopping working altogether.

Normally wiping or brushing the touchpad and opening the synaptics mood facility is a temporary fix but it soon returns and can be very annoying. Many users see this and I have tried everything including removing the touchpad, sticky tape, wedge, drivers.... and now finally an SSD has fixed it.

What SSD did you buy? Gotta get one for my G73 too.

I've had my TP replaced by Asus RMA team 2 weeks ago and it's again failing. Just wasted money...

Dunno if I can recommend mine really because I dont know a lot about SSD's however mine runs around 220mb/s read and 180mb/s write and from what I have seen so far its extremely fast compared to my 7200RPM and such a bargain upgrade even for a mid range model:

96GB Kingston V+100 it only cost me £70 from ebay brand new :)

I was looking at the C300 though but just wanted to keep my costs down so decided to go for a cheaper model and im very pleased with it.

Been a week and no touchpad issues :D
