I have never purchased an ASUS pc either laptop or tower pc before. Now that the G74 is out, will ASUS discontinue support for the 73?

    Guys,

Just wonder if anyone is using a laptop sleeve with their G73SW? just wondering if the laptop w/ sleeve can still fit with the Targus back pack? And if it is, can anyone let me know what would be the size dimension of the sleeve? TIA. :)

Also does anyone here that bought this laptop came also with a Steel Series gaming headphone like mine in the package? (aside from the backpack and mouse).

    Cheers,
    Omar

I don't see why they would - the G74 is pretty much a G73 with a different cooling design + upgraded video card and modified keyboard layout. They can probably even use the same mainboard BIOS if they modify the existing one to support the 560M.

No asus will not discontinue support yet. Usually its years after they stop making a product, they are still pumping out G73s. As mine that I have had for a couple of months now, has newer technology it tells me they still plan to support it. The seriel numbers and build dates for the parts in my laptop are 2011 based. So I would assume they plan to support it for years to come.

As for the Ram I went ahead and installed the 4x4 Kingston Hyper X and my Benchmarks went up. I have the video card maxed out on MSI Afterburner at 880/1720/1625 and it is holding at 90degrees C.

This might sound like a newtarded question but..
I bought the laptop couple of months ago, had few hiccups with wifi at first but I reinstalled Windows 7 + new drivers/utilities/hotfixes and so on and it is running much better than before.
However, ever since I got this laptop I've been wondering if I'm not using it's full potential. Such as, I've always wondered if the 4G SSD Hybrid 500GB HD x2 is really booting my laptop faster than non-hybrid HD.. ie. Am I using the Hybrid portion... I started wondering about this when I had to reinstall W7 during the initial part of set-up where you have to format which drive to install and it partitioned the drive 35GB:465GB. And I don't even know if I did that right or not...
Another reason I don't think I am really using this laptop the best it can be is because I just heard about hardware acceleration on browsers and where you can even test it. I ran the fishbowl test without doing anything to my Firefox 5.0. I got 60FPS all the way through 100 fishes. But when I got to 250 fishes, it dropped to 13FPS. I was like okay, okay let's see what happens when I turn my hardware acceleration on. So I go to about:support and it was already turned on... :( I see people on Youtube running 1000 fishes just at 25-30FPS. Is this all that GTX460M can do?
And do you guys overclock this model of laptop? If so, is it safe to do?
I just read what I wrote above and hopefully I made sense of the seemingly random questions. But basically I want to know how you guys use this laptop in terms of improving or maxing out its performance and capability.

    I hope this helps you:

Video Card Clockings at the Time of Test: 860Core/1720Shader/1500Memory

    750Fish - 60FPS
    1000Fish - 50FPS
    1250Fish - 37FPS
    1500Fish - 28FPS

I did a second test, and I suggest you do it too. Its unbiased testing from Microsoft (I know it sounds strange). Its called FishIE: FishIE Tank

    I got 60FPS on both IE9 and Firefox 5 at 1000 Fish.

Hi vexvegaz and welcome to the forums! :D

I would suggest that you unplug it as leaving it that way may shorten the lifespan. If you want to keep it plugged, just remove the battery.

Thanks for the warm welcome Vergil, and thank you for the reply as well as advice regarding battery care.

unfortunately, I would have to withdraw from this owners club. I reciently returned my g73sw due to ethernet port issues and bleeds through screens. Fortunately, i was able to return it and exchange it for a g74sx :D

again, thank you for the reply and advice, much appreciated!

If you're going to do the browser test, make sure 3D stereovision is turned off if you have the 3DE model. Other than that check the video card driver and browser versions. I couldn't get Chrome to run the test unaccelerated, but both IE9 (64 bit) and Firefox 5 handled it fine. It's not really a hardware test though as it's a test of whether the system is configured correctly for browser acceleration of that particular application.

I purchased a g73sw 3de from newegg.com recently as an openbox item. And it looks like this may have been a mistake.

I am getting random screen flickers. The screen will go black for about a second and then go back to normal. This happens when I am gaming, but it also happens when I am sitting at the desktop. It happens with 3d enabled or disabled. I have tried using the drivers on the ASUS site as well as the most up to date version from nvidia. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even though this was an open box item I still spent a decent amount of money on it.

itold have you checked to make sure all the hardware exists, and is correct? Like the ram, processor, and video card to start?

DocBeech: I ran the test again, and same results. I'm about to download IE9 and see how that runs because I heard IE9 is automatically configured for hardware acceleration.
Skywise: I don't have 3d G73SW model, just regular. The video card is up to date and browser version is actually firefox 5.0.. wonder if that's why.. Could you show me how to configure it correctly? I have never opened the Nvidia control panel before today lol and I have no idea what any settings do and don't want mess things up.

I'm feeling almost like I don't deserve to have good performing laptop because I don't even use them correctly. How do you know if I am booting with SSD part of the Hybrid HD? I've always wondered about that because load time doesn't seem much faster than my old laptop. Actually alot slower now because I startup with Rainmeter and ObjectDock.

I know it's a weird question but what do you guys do to get the maximum performance out of your laptop?

Change the video drivers; download the latest from Asus website(don't select g73 as version, go to manual selection, and select just drivers, from the notebook drivers category, and in the third selection column should be VGA).

I don't know what to tell you then. With Nvidia driver 275.33 I get working video acceleration in Firefox 5 without having to do anything. I don't think there's anything in the driver that configures it, but there might be in the browser.

As for the cache buffer on the hybrid drives, it's too small to provide enough of a benefit for booting, unless perhaps during multiple reboots one after another because you're performing updates. It's designed to speed up tasks you perform the most, and usually that's not rebooting.

Eventually, yes. The priority right now is getting the laptop completely reconfigured after the crash, so I can mirror a pristine copy to a spare drive.

Absolutely nothing. It's enough to start it, and after that you can close it. Mind you, if you use hibernate or sleep, throttling might get reset and then you have to run it again.

Yep all you need to do is start up Throttlestop, you dont need to turn it on, it fixes the problem in monitoring mode.

You'll know its working by stress testing the GPU and CPU at the same time (So for example Furmark and Prime95 at the same time) and you can look right in throttlestop at the speed on the top. If it goes down to ~800Mhz doing both at the same time then your being throttled. If it doesnt (which it wont :p) then your all good.

    Nope, that doesnt matter.

dude serioulsy im usally on forums lots of them but here you guys are firendly and know you stuff@@!@!!!!love it thanks to all you guys. hey ahl395 you said its will be in monitor mode? now what i did was added the line ExtiTime=5 to the .ini file. so when i first boot my laptop , first thing after im set i launch throttlestop and then it just closes by it self(per the line i addded) so all those other settings and that "turn on" button dont matter? if so im all se tand thank you all so much....any other tweaks i can do HEHE :)

    Hahaha NBR's the best! :D

Yep! that'll work perfectly. Also, you can just add Throttlestop to your startup. Go to start menu > All Programs > Right click and Open Startup Folder. Then just drop a shortcut to Throttlestop in there. And it will start automatically when you log in. Then go into Throttlestop's options and check the "Start Minimized" option. And it will start up when you log in, and exit, and you'll never even notice it or have to worry about it ;) :D

Wha? what are you talking about?

Actually that won't work because it requires admin permissions. It simply won't run if you do that. The proper way of doing it is to use the task scheduler. See the guide here on how to do it:

So my screen flicker problem still exists. Going into device manager I do not have any icons that would indicate something is not installed properly.

@myx I went onto the asus drivers page and there are only three options. Let asus detect my model, model name search, and select model manually. I do not see an option anywhere to bypass the model selection and look specifically for VGA drivers.

Does anyone know if the warranty from ASUS applies to something that was bought open box from newegg?

It wont run? idk thats how i do it and it works for me, easier than the task scheduler. I also have UAC off so maybe thats why.

You can get the latest Nvidia driver for notebooks from here:
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 275.33 WHQL

I run Nvidia 275.33 version without any problem.

Yes, your fine. Its even easier than that. If you look on the lower right hand side of your laptop, under the ROG emblem you will have a sticker that says New Revision. It should be to the right of your right hand as you type.

After upgrading to sd25 does anybody else have this error in in SMART atributes?
I'm not sure if it's really an error or something due to the firmware. I have not noticed any problems with the laptop so far in any activity.

I never think BB warranty's are worth it, so that is up to you if your willing to spend the money or not, honestly, I'd save the money for an SSD or something. Good luck with the G74, and good job on starting the owners thread, hopefully it will stop a lot of the spam threads getting created about the G74 in the main asus section.

I'm sorry if I am asking a question that has been asked before but I recently ordered my G73SW and I had a question about the WiFi card upgrade.

Is the upgrade to the Intel card show a noticeable increase in performance?

Is there 2 or 3 antenna wires in the stock setup?

On a scale of 1-10 how difficult is the installation. (I have taken various laptops apart in the past)

    Thanks

Performance is also dependant on your home network.
    2 antenna stock setup
If 1 is knowing how to unscrew some screws than the whole ordeal is a grade 1 difficulty :)

Someone on here did a comparison test of the two. I dont have the link but i remember they werent very different. 3 antennas gave a higher peak but the average speeds were about the same.

There is only 2 antennas in the laptop AFAIK. So i dont know how you would hook up the third antenna at all. But there may be a way to mod it.

Replacing the wifi card alone is very easy. 2/10. Its right under the compartment door. ;)
