    Hi Jim,
i am using MSI Afterburner for overclock,i also suggest you using software for tracking the temps and clock rates: HW64 Info,Nvidia inspector and GPU-Z(all is self explanatory).
In terms of overclocking you can easily pull the slider directly to 700Mhz for core and than gradually increase by 25Mhz and keep tracking the temps and the system stability for each increase.I didnt go more than 800 for core.My memory clocks are in range of 1500-1550. In furmark test temps do not exceed 85`C on max clock.
    Hope this help.
    Happy New Year G73 owners!
    Cheers

Thanks. I did as you recommended. Unfortunately I can't go over 775Mhz core because after that my system crashes :(. Temp is OK, around 70 (while I played Crysis 2) so that's not the problem. So far I've left synchronisation ON with the other frequencies but later I'll try to increase them independently.

Edit: is it possible to change the voltage of the card? I somehow can't unlock it..

It can't be unlocked. And I've found the frequencies cannot be unlinked either. Even with the box unchecked they still sync up with eachother.

I don't really think it would be an issue as long as you defragment with some regularity. Only issue I can think of would be that if you ever create a system image backup it would be an enormous file since it would include everything on your drive.

You can't unlock the voltage for free adjustment, but there is a VBIOS modification that can increase the voltage to .96V. You can also do 1.0V, but it's incredibly unstable. The .96V VBIOS took my max overclock from 800 core to 840. Personally I don't use it for anything other than benchmarks (after my repaste I got used to a max gaming temperature around 73C, so even low 80's bug me, although they're perfectly safe), but you might want to give it a try if you aren't happy with your current overclocking capabilities.

Gotcha. Maybe if you dropped your memory clock a little you could push the core a little more (probably not the most worthwhile trade of course)? If that is your max, you're still running at 560m stock clocks though, so that really ain't too shabby!

    Seller feedback looks pretty positive.

I know this is rather hypocritical advice coming from me, but I noticed that you're looking for a 1.5 GB GPU as well . . . with the amount you're spending, have you considered selling off the G73 and putting the extra cash you were going to invest in it towards something new? Of course I'm not going to lie, it's always fun trying to find a new way to trick out my G73 :p

I have considered this, but I love how the G73 looks and the cooling is PHENOMENAL. Also, it is difficult to find a SB 17" laptop for the price that I got this for.

Hey Guys! I am new to this forum as I am thinking about purchasing a g73SW-XT1 laptop. It has the 2630QM, 8g 1333 ram, 500g 7200rpm HD, with the 460m.

Do any of you guy's know of any known problems with this model? I know some of the first sandy bridge processors had a recall.

I plan on playing BF3 with it. Is it hard to over clock the 460m? I was also thinking about upgrading the card to a 560m. I am seeing conflicting statements on if that can be done or not. I found a 1.5GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M MXM 3.0b Video Card for $245.

This going to my first laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Let me know if you get this and how it works out for you. I would have to say the only thing I do not like about my G73sw is the screen. I knew I was taking a loss when I got the BST6 but this screen is awful. The viewing angles have to be the worst of any laptop I have ever owned.

Only problems I can think of are bloatware and the keyboard lights not working after your first Windows update (although that can be fixed by reinstalling the driver).

The graphics card cannot be upgraded unless (according to one report here) you are using a 560m from an Asus VX Lamborghini model. Any other 560m will not work and even one from the Lamborghini model has only been tested by one person so far.

The 460m will overclock pretty well to a little past 560m clock speeds unless you end up with a low-binned card. What settings are you hoping to run BF3 on? I've never played the game, but I'm sure others here will be able to report some graphics settings and frame rates.

I was wondering if anyone on this forum knows whether or not you can purchase a 3d model screen for the g73sw. I purchased the XR1 model from Frys, and I would like to replace the current screen with the one from the 3de model. If anyone knows that answer to this please let me know. If I figure the answer out before hand, I will update this post.
    Thanks in advance!

You can replace the regular SW screen with the 3DE one, but you won't get the 3D transmitter capability then. However, you will of course get the better screen.

Hi Guys, I just used a microphone on my G73SW and I was unpleasantly surprise how bad the quality was. I was using Skype and the person on the other side could barely hear me. Then I switched to my iphone and then to old laptop and both were much better then this asus.

Do you know is there anything I can do to improve the quality of the microphone? Another driver or some tweaking? Thanks

Jimy i had same crappy experience before and it was really driving me crazy.
Go to contorl panel/sound/recording. Double click on microphone and than go to levels. Somehow after installing Realtek drivers "microphone boost" is set to max, which is causing the problems.Slide it back to left towards 0 and you can enjoy your calls.

    Cheers!

Does anyone know how to disable multi-touch gestures with the touchpad, a friend of mine got another Asus model and is getting really annoyed when the touchpad misinterprets what they're doing. It's a Synaptics touchpad so I figure the setting options are similar. Never messed with mine because I always use a mouse.

    Edit: Nevermind, figured it out.

Finally got my laptop back this weekend, after one month in the shop. Now while I'm glad to have it finally back, Asus did screw up big time - they replaced the Intel 6300 wifi with a crappy Atheros card, and to add insult to injury the two screws for the left HDD cage are missing. When I called about it, the CSR couldn't seem to understand the concept of the wlan card being separate from the motherboard. *sigh*

Is anyone having problems with the ASUS G73SW USB3.0? I am getting good speeds but the laptop wont restart when my HD is plugged into it and right now it wont play a .avi file. It sees the drive, i can access it but it seems to crash File Explorer when ever i try to work with the external drive. It is really starting to be a hassle and i am very disappointed!

Also when ever i go to Safety Remove Hardware and tell the computer to disconnect the external drive i can still see it in File Explorer but it is no longer in the Safety Remove list... WHATS GOING ON?!?!?

The hard drive is Seagate GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 3.0. I just bought the laptop January 5th.

^It should since the two CPUs have the same socket. You might need a different heatsink though.

    Hi! First post!
I got an Asus G73SW and I'm very happy with it. Great laptop so far!
But I don't understand a thing about that overlock and temperatures stuff. If anyone could give me some hints would be great!

I downloaded and installed a bunch of programs related to the overlocking/benchmark issues like: CPU-Z, GPU-Z, nVidia Inspector, CPUID HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, Rivatuner, Furmark, HwinFO64, ThrottleStop, #d Mark (06/11),....

I have the 290.53 nvidia drivers, I think I have everything updated. I ran 3dMark 6 and got 14028 score and 3dMark11 and got 1995. With Fumark I got 972 points (1920x1080(FS) - AA: 0 samples). I have no idea if those scores are good or bad.

I would like to have a better overall performance (mainly in gaming) with the overlocking. But I won't mess with it if I don't know what really to do. If someone could tell me what to do, even in PM, I would be appreciated!

And sorry for my poor english.
    Regards

Hi JoaoT and welcome to NBR Forums. :D

Personally, I'm not a fan of using 3dMark, but I did use Furmark when I overclocked my GPU just to test for stability. I personally think the best thing to test for better performance in gaming is to actually play. That's the main thing I did.

MSI Afterburner is really effective with overclocking the GPU and that's what I used for my machine. It's important to take note though that every GPU is different, even if they are the same model. They will not always overclock to the same values. Some may be stable even at higher clocks while some may get unstable at those same clocks. If you are to overclock, you should just raise the clocks little by little and test for stability.

    Hope this helps.

He doesn't need a different heatsink (does one even exist?). The cooling is adjusted for temperature, not clock speed. As a result, the fan might run more and faster than with the default CPU, but the CPU itself should definitely work. The biggest potential issue is that the CPU running hotter might limit how much you can overclock the GPU, but that's about it.

Use MSI Afterburner to overclock the GPU and the video memory. Use Furmark to "pre-warm" the components and then run 3DMark to see if the settings are stable. If it crashes at any point, try lowering the settings. If it's stable, either increase the settings or try running it again. With enough experimentation you should be able to find the sweet spot for your system.

Hey all. I bought a G73SW-XT1 from Tiger Direct in late October and I've been loving it ever since. I've come across an issue this past week or so though. Shortly after turning the notebook on, it starts making this loudish noise. It sounds like a fan of some sort, not sure if it would be one of the primary cooling fans or from the gpu or what. The computer still runs fine. I sent in a ticket to Asus on Sunday and haven't heard back yet. Has anyone had a problem similar to this? What was it and what did you end up doing? Thanks

The fans are bound to spin up, but they should be pretty quiet. Do you have a disk in the ODD? It can get pretty loud and loves to spin up randomly.

    Thank you Vergil Sparda!
So I'll try do that, using MSI Burner, and then Furmark. How do I know, through Furmark if it's stable or not?
Yes, I understand that. But as you have a similar machine to mine could you tell what you get? Your values of overclocking, temperatures and stuff. Just to have an idea.
And the Nvidia drivers you're using? Which ones are the best? Right now I have 290.35. I tried 290.53 and 285.62, and through 3d mark the best score I got was with the 285 ones. Should I try older ones to see if i can get better performance? Or is there a driver that's the best for this laptop/graphics card?
    Thanks once again!

This is a louder sound than the usual fan sound. They were still very quiet. I did have a disk in the drive but that wasn't the issue. The primary source of the sound seems to be on the right side towards the back. It seems to be making a bit of a vibration through that side of the case also.

    Hi Jo,
i am using MSI Afterburner for overclock,i also suggest you using software for tracking the temps and clock rates: HW64 Info,Nvidia inspector and GPU-Z(all is self explanatory).
In terms of overclocking you can easily pull the slider directly to 700Mhz for core and than gradually increase by 25Mhz and keep tracking the temps and the system stability for each increase.I didnt go more than 775 for core.My memory clocks are in range of 1500-1550. In furmark test temps do not exceed 85`C on max clock. I did 3d11 long time ago as far as i remember it was round 2100(not really sure).
I am using last whql drivers 285.62 and didnt go for betas since i dont play last game releases(BT3,Skyrim,Batman..). I found this ones as most stable so far.Hope new whql coming out very soon.

Since you are an gamer you should read something about ThrottleStop and you can find it here:

So I installed my ssd into my comp and run norton ghost to clone my c drive to the ssd. I set my ssd as my boot drive and let it finish. When it finished I go to format my c drive and all sorts of bad stuff starts happening and I get BSOD. Any idea where I went wrong and how I can fix it?

Make sure its set to boot from your SSD (Hit Esc on post screen)

If thats not the problem try fresh installing Windows instead of using the clone.

If that still doesnt fix it, you might have gotten a bad SSD.
-I dont know what brand SSD you got, but thats common with OCZ.

hey all.. i don't know what i did for nobody to reply to me except change the title, so i'm going from there..
my computer screen flickered black the back to normal a couple times before my problem started so now i'm at a standstill as what to do.. my problem is it keeps freezing up on me, then when i force shutdown, wait ten or so seconds, turn it back on, and the screen won't show anything, it's totally black.. i did the same thing one time, and the screen came on, went to the black and white screen asking if i wanted to start in safe mode, etc... since it had froze up on me in safe mode before i just went with run normally.. it did fine, i put in my password, my screen came up, and after a second or two, i heard in the background the sound that windows makes when you get to your password page.. well, it worked for about five minutes then the screen went black Before freezing up this time.. i've tried system restore, and called asus.. asus told me what they told me last time i had a problem.. "hit f9 and we'll restore it to it's original state.. can anybody help me?? i'm going Crazy over this.. tyia

I recently bought an Asus G73SW-A1 from XoticPC during their Holiday sale, took out the 2nd HDD and replaced the blu-ray drive, bringing the price down to around $1,000.

So since I took out the 2nd HDD, and brought it down to only 500GB, I was thinking of putting in an SSD in the 2nd slot, and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on what SSD to get, tips, tricks etc. I also asked them to take out the brackets from the 2nd bay, so I would need to get those, right? ( Hard Drive Caddy) Planning to put my OS, and some games on the SSD, so probably looking at getting a 128GB.

Also, having no previous experience with modifying laptops, would you recommend I have someone else install it, or is it relatively easy to do myself? Would it void the 2 year warranty (+1 year accident warranty) I have on it? If you think I should let someone else do it, how much would something like that cost, and is there anywhere specific you think I should take it?

I'm sure this has already been posted, but I read through page ~100 before getting tired x.x Could someone reference me to a point in this thread (or just provide an answer) as to whether I can swap out my BestBuy-version (aka poorer resolution) display with a 1080? I have G73sw-BST6 and it tasted a small bit of hot tea last night. There's not actually any water marks on my screen (and I spilled it mostly on my keyboard), but the left half of the LCD is washed-out white (I can still see the ghosts of my desktop icons), and unsuable. I tried to reseat the cable, no luck. External monitor works fine.

This is what I had in mind:

17.3"LCD SCREEN Laptop Asus G73SW G73JW WUXGA FHD LED NEW Display 1920x1080 A++ | eBay

Some sites warn you not to replace with anything other than original, so I was wondering if this was a legitimate warning or just them covering their butts for returns.

    Thanks!

edit: I added a picture of the damaged screen, which does not look like other water damaged LCDs I've seen. There are no blotches (desktop icons have been extended to external screen, but you can see my mouse pointer behind the gray).

Yes you would need to get a caddy for the SSD. The one you linked works, but it is a rip off. The HP ZD7000 (and submodels) caddy also fits. (Not perfectly, but it works just fine and saves you money, you can usually pick up one on eBay cheap.)

Also, It is incredibly easy to replace it yourself, and I'm sure it doesnt void your warranty. All you have to do is take off the large panel door on the bottom and you will see your HDD right there and the empty slot for a second next to it.

I will also point out that an SSD will not help the performance of a game (other than just loading time).

As for an SSD, if you are doing this on a budget I recommend the Patriot Pyro SE or Patriot Pyro. They are cheap, have great speeds, and good reliability. Which is why I bought one myself. :D
If you aren't on a budget, an Intel SSD is your best bet, but very expensive. In any case, steer clear of OCZ and always read reviews for reliability, as many SSDs are horrible for it. And get a SATA III drive, since our laptops are equipped with it and it offers much better speeds than SATA II.

Gotcha, thanks a ton for the info.

One more thing: I have a 2 year warranty, and a 1 year accident protection, but the accident protection won't activate for some reason. I go on the Asus site, signed up, and it just keeps saying the Serial Number is incorrect (and giving me a busy server error as well, 9/10 times).

*The link they give me to activate it is:
    http://adw.asus.com/content/adp/default.aspx
This link doesn't work (at least for me), so I just went to the Asus site and tried registering it from there using the "register product" links.

I've checked, checked, and re-checked the Serial Number, exchanged zeros for O's, 1's for i's, 1's for L's, B's for 8's, and everything inbetween, and it won't work. It's quite curious, because when I enter the SN it knows it's a G73SW notebook, but then after I submit the rest of the info (The day I bought it, and where I bought it) it tells me that the serial number isn't valid. What do I do?

I've looked at all of their "suggestions" and everything for it, and can't figure it out. I tried getting support but their live chat is down right now, and I'm simply too drained for the day to call them on the phone. I also ordered the laptop online, and I ordered it the 25th, but didn't get charged til the 30th. Does it matter which of these days I choose as the day I bought the laptop?
