Don't worry, you certainly haven't said or done anything to offend anyone. Replies can be a little slow if you have an uncommon problem since nobody knows a solution off the top of their head.

Only things I can think of trying would be a restore or a full reinstallation of Windows. If that doesn't work, that unfortunately means you probably have a hardware problem and Asus is going to have to take a look at it. If they still won't take it after trying the restore and reinstall then your next best bet would be to take the G73 to a local repair shop or have someone take it there for you.

    You're welcome :)

Hmm that's odd... I dont think the day matters you ordered it but I would say the only way to resolve it is to call. I'm sure you dont have to make the call urgently though, maybe within 30 days or something to be safe.

I got something to mail in with my computer to get the Accidental, i filled it out, mailed it, and it came back to me undeliverable. What's up with their system? lol

Yeah, that's kinda ridiculous. I'm already a bit peeved with it all, and I've heard alot of horror stories as far as Asus customer service goes. Oh well, it's a great computer nonetheless. Would just be a huge bummer if something DID happen and I couldn't get the accident protection activated.

*EDIT* Tried again and after loading the page for what seemed like 5 minutes, it registered it, gave me a small survey, and sent me on my way. That only took me 3 days, and about 4 hours dedicated solely to the project, no big deal, right?

Now to solve the issue of getting my w-2 to print so I can figure out my tax return and hopefully get an SSD for this lovely machine... Thanks a ton, ahl395, I very much appreciate all your advice. I'll definitely be visiting here often to keep up. What a great forum!

Well hopefully they could still use the Accidental protection in the case something did. The one time I dealt with them was getting my charger replaced and i had zero problems. But it may be different for bigger problems. And as always, YMMV

thanks for getting back with me.. as you can see i'm not the fastest either.. i believe it's the screen.. i can force shut down once it freezes, wait, start it back up, and i know it's going through the black and white safe mode stuff, when it finishes counting down, it's silent for a second, then i see that my cpu is working by the front indicators, then the sound, da, da, Da comes on letting me know i'm at my password screen.. i can put in my password, and sure enough, ba dumm, i know my desktop is coming up.. So, it's back off to
asus to get fixed.. soon as i figure out how it's done that is..i have 360 plan so i should get it back pretty quick?? anybody know?? anyhow.. thanks Everyone for your help..

I haven't had any personal experience with their service department, but this thread should hopefully answer most of your questions about that: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/487940-asus-rma-warranty-guide.html

On a random note, methinks it's finally time for me to install the HyperX 1600 MHz RAM I got for Christmas. Does anyone know if I have to follow the wonky RAM slot scheme to make sure it's running dual channel? Because technically slots 1 and 3 are easy access and 2 and 4 are under the keyboard, which suggests that I would need to put one stick under the keyboard and the other in one of the easy access slots . . . that and I'm not sure if I'll need to drop the other RAM altogether to make sure the HyperX is running at full speed . . .

Update: RAM is in, and gosh it's beautiful . . .

Just need to figure out how to make it run at full speed now, I think it's stuck at 1333 because of the RAM in the other two slots.

Well that's unfortunate, because I just ordered another 8 GB of HyperX, but apparently 4 slots isn't going to work out.

    Looks like I'll have to pick between 8GB HyperX at 1600, 8GB HyperX at 1333 + 4GB Elpida at 1333, or 16GB HyperX at 1333 . . .

Probably just going to see if I can manage to sell the extra HyperX, not really worth the cost of that RAM if all I really get out of it is an extra 4GB and stuck at 1333.

In reality there's about zero performance difference between 1333 and 1600, FYI.

What Sarge said. We're talking about a performance difference of 1-2%, which is is so low you wouldn't notice it for any normal task, including gaming. For a highly CPU intensive task that takes 10 minutes, you might be able to shave 5-10 secs off the final time. The primary usage for high speed RAM is for bus overclocking where the RAM has to keep pace (which isn't exactly an issue for us) or for multi-CPU (not core) setups where you might have lots of concurrent memory accesses.

I'd look at your memory usage patterns and figure out how much RAM you really need - I actually need 16 GB for work, so it doesn't make sense for me to use less. If you can get away with less, then sure just sell the extra sticks, or sell the 1600 ones and buy 1300 ones and have money left over.

I just installed a N173HGE-L21 on my G73SW, which i got from here N173HGE-L21 replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $89.99 Brand-new screens (never used). (the Matte version) but there's these weird yellow strips showing up on the screen. Anyone here have any idea why its doing that and how to fix? I'm thinking of sending it back since there's a dead pixel on it as well.

Here is a picture taken with my phone that shows the yellow stripes (and the dead pixel )

    Greetings everyone.

I created an account because my Asus G73SW has some severe webcam issues. It lags like crazy, to the point where it is impossible to record anything with it, and streaming video over the internet is pretty terrible as well (obviously). I have searched high and low for a solution and found nothing.

So I humbly come to you oh G73 owners lounge: Has anyone found a solution for this? I tried to look for a solution in here somewhere, but 227 pages is pretty daunting, and the search didn't turn up with anything.

    Thanks much!

i dont think the webcam issue has been fixed yet, i also get the heavy lag on it.
im getting an issue when connecting my G73SW to a netgear 8 port switch at home. sometimes it only connects at 10mbps to the switch. all other devices on the switch manage to connect at 100mbps, but the laptop will not seem to connect all the time at 100mbps. first thought was that it was a dodgy ethernet cable so i tried a few others, still the same problem. one way i have managed to temporarily fix it is to open up the network adaptor settings and change the speed and duplex from auto negotiate to 100mbps half duplex or 100 mbps full duplex. but even then when on those settings it will only connect at 10mbps occasionally. for it to work again at 100mbps i end up having to restart the laptop and keep playing with the speed and duplex settings until it connects at 100mbps again. anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening?

Just curious, what are you using to determine that CPU speed?

And you might just need to manually switch your power profile from the "on battery" high performance profile to the "plugged in" high performance profile with Power4Gear because the performance profile locks the CPU at 100% while the battery profile allows downclocking.

The only completely accurate monitoring app i know of is throttlestop, HWiNFO and CPU-Z don't report accurate clock speeds under light load or at least didn't use to a year and a half ago. They do report accurate clock speeds under full 4 or more threads load though.

Looking for thoughts on the new NVIDIA GeForce 295.73 WHQL Driver released today (Tue Feb 21, 2012).
    I have the G73SW-A1 w/460M GPU.

Windows 7 64-bit version here: Graphics Driver - GeForce 295.73 Driver - GeForce
GeForce article here: Articles: NVIDIA GeForce 295.73 WHQL Drivers Released - GeForce

Any reason I should go searching/wait for an 'official' ASUS certified version of v295.73 ??
I'm cautious, skipped the various beta release horror stories, and have held onto
old version 275.33 (June2011) which has proven robust after fixing a few things.

Last year I vaguely recall ASUS/NVIDIA installation compatibility issues with the Realtek HD sound driver
and Nvidia PhysX/control panel installation failures using the ASUS certified update.
Anyway, looking for feedback before jumping in the shark infested driver update pool lol thanks.

Can't say I've ever had any problems with drivers straight from Nvidia, and I've used a good number of beta drivers too. If there are performance fixes for games you like, go for it, Asus almost never puts new drivers up on their site.

thanks for the response hyrule4927 and past experience using the nvidia drivers much appreciated,
i'll just go for it as admin and see what happens launching nvidia's EXE.
really hope i don't need to do any troubleshooting/cleaning/reinstalls, we'll see.
i'm hoping for better FPS in Skyrim fyi..

EDIT UPDATE: v295.73 WHQL driver suite full install w/zero issues, no prep just a fresh cold boot; fyi, expanded files require approx 280MB.
Skyrim, Media Player Classic, Firefox OK. Skyrim seems smoother (not monitoring FPS)..

I had my notebook in High performance option but the power for gear widget showed i had the entertainement profile but i thouth it didnt matter because i had the high performance windows 7 option selected. When i changed to to power for gear performance everything was ok but i still dont get how i can have two profiles active at the same time and how one overides the other.

Hello! i have 1 problem with my laptop and 1 question. the problem is the writing in browsers, is a little delayed, i mean when i write something on google search for example, the letters appear on screen with a shorten, some times longer delay , somethimes i finish to write on keyboard a word and after a second the word appear on screen. I've found on some internet forums that other people have encountered this problem and they found the solution for this problem in downgrading the speed of internal watch of the RAM proc from 1333 Mhz to 800, is this necessary ? or how can i solve my problem, cause even at laptop service they couldn't find whats is the problem, is it from RAM memory or video? Is it the hard disk or drivers?Should i deactivate from bios the usage of RAM memory for video processing ? My configuration is i7 2630 qm with 8GB of ram and nvidia geforce gtx460m cuda 1.5GB. and 2X500GB hybrid hard disks.
And the second question is what videocard could i purchase for this configuration to be more suitable for 3d processing software like CATIA , does the quadro series from nvidia will fit with my config? is there any way to upgrade the RAM memory from 8 GB to 16 with this proc (i7 2630qm)? i had instaled win7 home, ultimate and now , proffesional, all with license

    Hello, me again!

So my computer has been running great, but the speakers have started crackling.

I don't ever listen to music loudly outside of head phones (and even that I keep fairly moderate), but after 40-50 days of having my Asus G73SW-A1 (received it mid-January), the speakers have started crackling, what should I do? I have it under warranty, so should I try and get it replaced? Is there a fix? Is this a known issue with the speakers on the computer? Any help would again be very appreciated!

    - Mr. Brown

No problem, glad that worked for you.

Technically P4G is just a utility that allows you to customize your Windows power profiles more easily, but considering that they are conflicting a bit, I would recommend that you either use only P4G for power management, or uninstall it and only use Windows power options. I personally prefer Power4Gear, but it's your call.

Okay, not entirely sure about the first issue, although I'm rather skeptical of the RAM suggestion. I can't imagine slowing down your RAM would fix anything (and unless I need to poke around the BIOS some more, I don't think you can adjust that on this laptop anyway). Does this happen with every web browser, or just one in specific? Not sure if this is the issue, but you might want to update your graphics drivers if you haven't done that yet. Newest drivers from Nvidia are here:
Graphics Driver - Verde 295.73 Driver - GeForce

As for the second question, this laptop isn't really compatible with any GPU's other than the GTX460M that it came with. There have been dubious reports of upgrading to a 560M from an Asus VX model, but there's pretty much no chance of getting a Quadro running in a G73. Never used CATIA, but I've found this notebook to be more than competent for AutoDesk and AutoCAD, so I'd imagine any similar software would run just fine.

16GB of RAM works without a hitch, although I'd recommend that you make sure you really need it before making the investment. It's also worth noting that the 2630QM doesn't support speeds greater than 1333, so there's no need to spend extra on faster RAM. Also, two of the four RAM slots require partial disassembly (removing the keyboard and such) to access.

The G73 speakers do seem to have a bad reputation for crackling. Mine do it occasionally and I pretty much ignore it now, I honestly wouldn't go through the trouble of getting a warranty repair unless it really bothers you. If you just want to give something a shot you could try reinstalling your sound drivers.

Yeah, kind of afraid of that. It's not too bad as long as I keep them quiet. Oh well. I don't want to not have my computer for 3-4+ weeks while they "repair" it, though, so I'll just tough it out. I use headphones mostly, anyways.

not really sure if you guys are still here or not, but last time i was here i was having trouble with my screen going out, then it went out for good.. well i sent it back to asus and boy was i worried i wouldn't get it back for a months, or they couldn't repair it, or all of the horror stories i read about asus's customer support.. so far they've done me right.. computer was sent off in Feb., came back in Feb.. but instead of the screen being the problem, it came back: replaced system board, replaced cable, thermal, cpu thermal.. also said that the duplicated the issue to make sure that's what was wrong.. that sounds like an overheating problem to me?? what's the best free temp. monitor so i'll know next time if it's getting too hot.. i've google it, and sure there's a bunch out there but i wanted to run it past you guys first before i jumped right in to one.. Thanks in advance..WalkingHeart

WalkingHeart, I'd also give my vote to CPUID HW Monitor, I always run it in the background to monitor my temps. Anway, could you post your idle and load temperatures for us?

I just downloaded speedfan as a reference, but I can't comment on whether the little flames are an indicator or not because I'm running Folding@Home and my CPU has been at 100% all day (and thus is sitting around 80C). I can check if the icon changes when my CPU cools down after finishing the current work unit.

Anyway, I'd say that your CPU and GPU should be under 50C when the computer is idle, and shouldn't go past 85C for an extended time under heavy loads (although they might jump up there for a moment depending on what you're doing). Thermal shutdown temperatures are around 100C.

Edit: It's also worth noting that speedfan is more intended for desktop computers, and laptop processors will operate in a considerably wider thermal envelope, so it might throw out premature warnings.

Edit 2: Okay, looks like the little flame icons come on around 50C, which is a perfectly safe temperature.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions, or know of a guide that allows you to allocate system memory (RAM) for use by the GTX460m?
Also, has anyone else had their LAN card stop working randomly. Most of the time, it just reports a cable not being plugged in, even though there is. Now, it says that the hardware cannot start, then when I pressed the "check for hardware changes" button, it completely disappeared. It seems that the LAN card, and the wireless card, do not like to play nice anymore.

Hi WH,in regular use i found GPU Observer gadget accurate enough for constant, basic temp monitoring. While playing games i use nvidia insprector and HWInfo64. My idle temps are round 45`C and during intense gaming do not exceed 86`C. My gpu clocks are 775/1550.
    Hope this helps,cheers

Your temperatures look just fine. Under general use I'm close to 40C on my CPU and GPU. Considering that I've upgraded my thermal paste (basically a compound used to aid heat transfer between the processor and the metal of the heatsink) and you're still getting comparable temperatures, there's nothing you need to worry about. And 2000 is pretty much the idle speed for the fans, under heavy loads they go past 4000.

As for the GPU, that is the abbreviation for "Graphics Processing Unit", also referred to as the graphics card. With our laptop, the GPU is the Nvidia GTX460M. As the name would indicate, the GPU is mainly dedicated to processing 3D graphics. A graphics processor is much like a CPU (central processing unit), except they have many more cores, but at lower speeds. While CPU speeds are usually measured in GHz, GPU cores usually run below 1 GHz, so their speed is measured in MHz. Essentially they are designed this way because this kind of processing goes much faster with many cores working together than it would with just a couple fast cores. Anyway, back to what I was actually meaning to answer, the GPU clocks are just the speed in GHz that the GPU cores are running at. They usually vary between three settings depending on whether they the GPU is idle, processing 2D graphics, or processing 3D graphics.

Only other thing I'd add is some general advice that applies to any laptop. Always use it on a solid surface. Setting it down on the carpet, or a bed, or even your lap (the term "laptop" is a bit of a misnomer, hence why they are often referred to as "notebooks" by manufacturers) can block the vents and impair cooling.

Back again, with a new problem. I've randomly had troubles with my computer getting slow internet at times. It's always later at night (after 7pm, and goes randomly til I decide to go to bed), I have never noticed it happen during the day (before 7pm, after 7am). I thought it might just be my ISP ing up, but it never happens on Xbox Live or on my other computer (which both are run through ethernet), so it might just be the wireless? Regardless, I've never noticed this before I got my G73sw.

So I thought the problem MIGHT be with the computer, and I downloaded the most recent driver listed under "Wireless" in the Asus Drivers download location on their website ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G73Sw. It downloaded fine, asked to restart my computer, I did that, and nothing changed.

Admittedly, nothing changed because I downloaded an Intel driver and I have an "Atheros" wireless card, so I'm sure that's the issue, but there's no driver updates (or anything) under the name of "Atheros" on the driver downloads.....

I'm just talking out my at this point, and have no idea what's causing this and I'm really frustrated. Do you think it's my computer, or something I can fix? Or is it my ISP and am I just ed? I go through Comcast, so if it's the internet itself I'm pretty well hosed, as it's literally impossible to get anything done with Comcast customer service.

EDIT: ....and I know about the whole "Peak Hours" thing, where when there is 15 billion people on the same ISP using the net at the same time it gets slower, but this happens at 1 or 2 in the morning. I'm quite certain there isn't that big of a load at 1:00am PST (4:00am EST).

EDIT 2: It's also not just a slow net problem, it's a slow SPIKE problem. Like, I'll be in a Skype video call with my girlfriend, and all will be well, and then all of a sudden it comes up with red bars and tells me that my internet isn't working AT ALL (and no web pages will load), and then 15-30 seconds later it's fine, and moving just as fast as always. This happens every 1-5 minutes, for HOURS at a time. When my girlfriend lives several states away due to unfortunate circumstances it makes this even more frustrating. So to clarify, it's not a constant slowing down, it slows down in spikes to a ridiculous degree, like 15-30 second spikes of virtually NO INTERNET movement what-so-ever, then all of a sudden it goes to normal, and acts like nothing has happened at all.

EDIT 3: It's definitely an internet problem, not a computer problem, cause my sister's laptop slows down at the same time as mine. . That's way worse.

I came here to report on a similar issue. I use my wireless card 100% of time. I use Netflix to stream movies. All of the sudden the movie will just stop. I look and suddenly I don't have a network connection. I didn't pick up on what was going on the first few times. I now hit "fix problem" or whatever the option is. It turns out the wireless card is being turned off. The system re-enables the network card and all is fine. I'm not sure why it's happening.

Check the power settings for your wireless adapter and make sure it is set to maximum performance under all circumstances, you can also disable the option to have windows manage it altogether and leave it at full strength that way too.

Hi, A couple of months ago ASUS replaced my N71JQ with an G73SW (replaced under warranty, they didn't have any N71JQ's). In most respects, the G73SW has proven to be an improvement, but the trackpad drives me crazy. The N71 driver allowed doing a right-click by tapping w/ two fingers; the G73 has these fussy tap-zones. More impotantly, while often the trackpad seems to work fine, it will suddenly start ignoring taps. I will need to tap 3,4, or more times to get the tap to be recognized. Drags are likewise a pain--I can almost never complete a drag without it dropping on its own before the drag is finished. I have tried finessing my technique and adjusting sensitivity. Sometimes it seems like the problem is another finger or my other hand hovering too close to the pad but then when I try to test this it will work fine. I have noticed tapping is more consistent and reliable in an old low-res Windows game I play occasionally. I'd really appreciate any advice.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G73Sw

Go download a new driver for it. Track pad has issues. Pick your OS, and find the "Track Pad" or whatever they labeled it, and update to the newest available. See if that helps.

The only temperatures you should really have to worry about will be listed under your processor name, which should be "Intel Core i7 2630QM". Core #0, Core#1, Core#2, and Core #3 refer to your four cores (most things are numbered starting with zero in computers). Their temperatures vary individually based on load, so you really just need to pay attention to what core is the hottest at the moment. "Package" should be next on the list and will be close in temperature to your hottest core or a degree or two above. Light use core temperature should stay below 50C (although if they shoot up for an instant it's just your CPU turbo-ing most likely and not a problem). The danger zone for temperatures is 100C, and the computer will shut down to protect itself if things get that hot for long. These processors can shoot up as high as 95 for a short time under max load, I'd only be concerned if you have sustained (more than a couple minutes) core temperatures over 85C in any CPU heavy program. Although to be honest, CPU's are pretty durable, and unlikely to endure any real damage unless you have repeated thermal shutdowns.

The other temperature worth watching is your GPU temperature. It should be listed under the word "Temperatures" under "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M". You can pretty much follow the same temperature guidelines as I gave for the CPU, although it might run a little hotter under light use.

Thanks. I did update the driver already--didn't notice any change. Re: "Track pad has issues"--are you saying that the track pad in the G73 has issues in general, or that it sounds like my track pad in particular has issues? (I haven't found much searching "G73SW track/touch pad".)

I don't notice any problems with mine, but I mostly use a USB mouse. When I have used mine, it seems to click just fine with the "tap" function, so I'm not sure, but I have heard (I don't remember where, so don't quote me or hold me to this) of a few people having issues with it; however, track pads in general are pretty ty in my experience. Some people just have the "wrong fingers" for them. For instance: my father can't use a track pad to save his life, no matter how he holds his fingers, 50% of his movements won't register. It could be you, it could be the track pad, it could be the computer model. Not really sure.

I recently acquired some vintage audio equipment which included a turntable. I have now found myself crate digging on weekends searching for albums. I am wanting to rip the albums to my laptop to be converted into FLAC files. I have read that the mic input on some laptops is switchable to a line level input which I am afraid isnt the case with my G73sw. I was wondering if any of you have tried anything like this and what your results were. I tried using the headphone out to one of the tape monitor inputs on my receiver and it was horrid. I got this awful hum sound which I have read is typical on laptops and pc's for that matter because of all the internal interference. I doubt the on board sound on this laptop is shielded. I would ultimately like to have a usb solution of acquiring a line in but there are many choices and at this point I am not in to it enough to justify spending a large amount of money on a dedicated audiophile type solution. I guess this is a bit wordy but I appreciate any input any of you may have. Thanks

If it's a 50/60 Hz hum then you have power grounding issues.

In other news, my video card seems to be dying. This is the second one. Various artifacting in Windows. Had to lower the clocks to the minimum and disable Aero for the laptop to be usable. Plus my power jack is failing.

This will be my 3rd RMA during 9 months of ownership. Not a good experience with Asus quality so far.

    Hi,
i installed hard disk Sentinel some time ago, mostly for tracking the hd temperatures, but noticed that software reports my drive C: has health errors.I installed hd Inspector afterwards which only confirmed previous failing results.
Is this software really reliable and should i be worried with the results?
When i got my G73 on june last year was surprised with hard drives occasionally being noise(scrape like sound).Dont know if it has something with this health problems :(
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You could run seatools if you're still on the stock seagate drives and see if it returns any problems.
