Has anyone replaced the keyboard on the G73S -A1? Does anyone kno the OEM part number for the keyboard? One of my keys has stopped orking <-----(guess hich one) <----- I've tried compressed air, shaking, tapping, etc to no avail. I really don't ant to to send it in to service just for the keyboard. Replacing it should be fairly simple. I've atched (damn faulty key) the video on youtube of taking the machine apart and it looks like it's just popping the tabs on top of the keyboard and prying it up and then t o ribbon cables. Does anyone have a suggestion on a source for the keyboard? I'm looking on the ASUS EStore but the search for the keyboard for this model doesn't turn up anything. Thanks.

    Edit to add:
I did find the right keyboard (I believe) on the ASUS EStore for $65
    http://us.estore.asus.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=282
Any tricks or tips for replacing the keyboard? It looks fairly easy. The only part that looks like it might be interesting/delicate is releasing the 2 ribbon cables.

I also found a company that sells just the replacement keys (the caps and the mechanism underneath) but I'm not sure if that alone is the fix.

Can anyone help me with a fan problem i'm having? hwinfo64 shows my fans at 100%/~2600RPM, yet my temperatures do not require that much fan power (this is just when I boot up the computer, all temperatures are normal), yet the fans just start at that power from boot up. Is there any way to fix this or control fan speeds? Speedfan does not work, and there is no option on what to do in the BIOS, so I am currently stumped.

It's normal on almost all computers for the fans to spin up to full speed when first starting up, and then slow down.

The rating of 100% is wrong. HWInfo64 can't actually tell the correct % of the fans so it just shows 100%. I've confirmed this myself. The fans go up to 4600rpm+, So 2600 is nothing. ;)

For proof, stress test the CPU or GPU, and you'll see the rpm spin way up, and get much louder. But yet the 100% will never change :p

Hey all, I know this is old news, but I'm having trouble running a few games on my G73, namely things like Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. They run very choppy and I can't figure out why. I've tried Throttlestop and I've even tried the Bios flash fix, but neither of them have worked so far. Any advice?

Post a screen shot of how you have ThrottleStop setup and post a ThrottleStop log file while gaming. If your CPU is being throttled, it is going to show up in the log file. Copy and Paste the data from the log file to Pastebin.com and post a link so I can have a look.

Of course, just get an external enclosure and it will work with any computer.

    Hello everyone,

The model that I have is a: ASUS G73SW-A1

    Two issues:
2nd hybrid hard drive keeps goes idle all the time
Mouse bad does not respond on touch too well

I know this issue is a known problem and many have said to check the power profile and the hardware settings but it fails all the time.

Also I have this issues with the mouse pad that does not detect all the time the pressure of my fingers. I have change the settings and still nothing. One moment it does respond and another... it "lags", and goes back to normal in 4sec

For my HHD, the only solution was to unplug the second one. :(

Anyone has any options or help for me?
    Thank you

so i dont now if it's just me, but my GPU has been crashing a LOT lately

usually when I play games like warcraft 3 or starcraft 2 it's fine, but once in a while the colors on my screen will distort, it will become choppy, and I wont be able to move my screen at all, making me restart.

this has been happening for a very long time now, and it's gotten to a point where it happens once every 3-4 days.

the gpu runs between 60-80C degrees and I keep getting the "nvidia driver xxx.xx has crashed" I have updated my drivers over and over again and I have no idea what's going on

When you re-install or update your drivers, are you using the custom installation? The Custom installation should allow the option to "Perform a Clean Installation" which should reset your card to stock settings and erase anything that may have altered it.

With the assumed re-installation of the drivers, you may want to just uninstall all of the nvidia drivers through Windows 7 Safe Mode (tap the F8 key repeatedly on boot up and a menu should pop up before Windows starts).

After removing the drivers, run Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode Driver Sweeper - CNET Download.com

re-install the drivers, this time using the Custom option and checking the box for "Perform a Clean Installation"

The only other questions I have for diagnostics are what are your graphics settings at in games and have you Overclocked the card at all?

For the touchpad issues, have you tried re-installing or updating the drivers at all? Sometimes updating the drivers may help resolve the issues.

For your hard drive, you stated it was a hybrid so it has to be a Seagate drive. I would recommend swapping the drives in the bays to see if it is the SATA socket or the drive itself. Another suggestion I have for you is to try running SeaTools diagnostics Downloads | Seagate
SeaTools does require the .NET 4 framework to run, so if you aren't sure if you have it or not you can get it here Download: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

The only other thing I can think of with your hybrid drive is to check to see if a firmware update is available, they do have them for the Seagate hybrid drives, but please be sure to exercise caution in running the firmware updates for these particular drives, SOME people have reported that it may cause other issues.

I got my Asus G73SW-A1 last December from XoticPC. I got a great price since it was last year's model. It may be the last Asus product I purchase. The small key 10-key is unusable as a 10key, I can hear bearing noise from one of the fans, the grill under the screen collects dust and dirt particles, touchpad is frustrating to use, screen is so glossy I can't use with overhead fluorescent fixtures, blu-ray drive is fragile, the main drive was DOA, and now the power jack isn't holding the adapter right, so it loses AC power.

Eh, I can live with that without getting upset. I knew the 10key was a bad design that they've fixed, and gloss screens always have horrible reflection. The color and resolution are great and the performance makes me quite happy. I like how there's two hard drives, I got one a SSD and will use the other for data, great design! If it wasn't for the noisy fan, the laptop would be really efficient cooling. I'd rather keep it clean, but I'm not ocd, so not a big thing that there's a dirt collecting grill.... does anyone know how to clean it out btw?

But what makes me want to have a f'ing temper tantrum is the power jack. I knew it was going to be weak since I had a Toshiba a long time ago with a very similar jack and it broke often. This laptop isn't a power miser with it's dedicate video card, so it really needs to be plugged in while gaming. Knowing this, they still add a inferior power jack. I had a Dell Inspiron before this and it's jack was more robust. It needed it's jack replaced more then once, but it's no way as weak as this one. My wife has a Dell Latitude and she's rough on that jack and it has yet to break after 2 years. I just fixed a Panasonic Toughbook (light more than durable). It also has a small bore power jack, but it's L shaped and looks very durable. I'm not a Mac fan, but they have a durable solution as well for laptops that don't need to be plugged in nearly as much. So what the heck that Asus manufactures this high priced laptop put in such a crappy power jack? It's very frustrating.

I got the warranty, but I was hoping to get 4 years out of this. To do that I'll need to learn to desolder and resolder a new adapter on the motherboard. Are there any tutorials about that for this computer? Any sources for the adapter? Or maybe cut my lose and ebay it after I get it fixed and cleaned. Anyone know how to remove that grill so it can be cleaned?

    assemblage,

I understand your frustration. I've had the power jack replaced on my G73SW-A1 already. Then my 'w' key on the keyboard went out. I said screw it and sent it in to ASUS for repair. To their credit they turned it around in record time. I sent it in last Friday (2 Day shipping) but it was the holiday weekend. I figure they didn't get it until Wednesday of this week. I got the repaired laptop back today. They must have fixed it the same day it was received and turned around and shipped it back out via 2 day service. According to the shipping problem they replaced the keyboard and the main board so it wasn't just the keyboard.

I don't know of any tutorials for fixing the power jack. Perhaps someone else does. There are some decent videos of a complete tear down of the laptop on Youtube but not specifically about fixing the power jack issue.

Edit to add: I am now getting a message that talks about the fact that my Windows 7 product key is not valid and gives me several options to validate it. I am assuming this is happening because they had to replace my mainboard. Dang it ASUS, why didn't they go through the hassle of validating this. Seems kind of tacky to not to do that for the customer.

Actual fix: ASUS replaced the motherboard as a warranty RMA; the problem was fixed after that.

Battery: 43%, plugged in, charging... for hours. It appears the battery is not actually being/taking a charge. The battery charge indicator on the front of the laptop is orange, and has been for a day or so.

Nirsoft's BatteryInfoView shows the battery can discharge at 30W for the base OS when I unplug the AC adapter (whose light is green), but the charging is being done at 210mW.

I almost always keep the laptop plugged in (and the power supply plugged into a good APC surge protector, which still shows good protection on its LEDs) and on a cooling pad with the fan on; a couple days ago I did run the battery down, and now it doesn't charge. This is the first time I've run the battery down since the most recent warranty service.

Any ideas? Has anyone ever successfully RMA'd just the battery? My laptop's been in three times already, and I'm getting annoyed at not having it.

It might not be the battery - could be the charging logic in the laptop. The only way to know for sure is to try the battery in another G73.

Agreed, it's either the battery or the charger.

Having waited for RMA of the laptop three times already, I'd much rather RMA the battery first and see, since I can still use the laptop plugged in while the battery is away.

A question for you guys. I have a G73SW-A1. I have sent it in a couple of times for warranty service. One of those times they said they replaced the main board. I happened to remove the bottom access panel at some point after having gotten the laptop back and I noticed what appears to be thermal paste that has oozed out from under the large silver piece with the two copper colored long pieces that look like maybe heat pipes or something. What I found was strange was I pushed my finger nail into the paste that has oozed out the side and it's still soft. My finger nail easily made an indention in the paste. Is this normal? Isn't that stuff supposed to dry and set up hard or is it supposed to remain pliable like that? I don't remember that stuff having been like that (oozed out to where i could see it) so I'm assuming they put a bit to much on when they replaced whatever they replaced last time.

It depends no the type of paste used. Some dry out, but the good ones aren't supposed to, since drying out makes the paste less thermally conductive. I'd use a cotton swab to clean up the excess paste to ensure that it doesn't come into contact with anything electrically conductive.

I have (as seen below) the G73SW-XT1. For whatever reason - well, to run World of Tanks (I'm not a gamer, just wanted to add one stupid game!!) and had to update video drivers from NVidia's site. Now, at least twice a day, my system goes into a frozen mode (at least the screen shows no cursor movement) and there's a hatch-cross running across the screen. First happened when watching a video. I couldn't see the video playing, but I could hear it. No key combo did anything.
Is there a latest video driver rev were supposed to be using on this model? Should I revert to what's on the ASUS page and forget updates to nVidia's site? Should I take the blue pill?

There are two different drivers for the USB 3.0

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G73Sw

Expand the "USB" Section and you'll see two different options, try both.

What do you mean by a hatch-cross running across the screen? Can you show a picture?

I would forget about the drivers on Asus's website as they are outdated. Go with the latest stable drivers on Nvidia's site.

I believe someone tried to upgrade it and it did not work. Upgrading the GPU on a laptop is just not feasible.

Again, as far as i remember, somebody tried upgrading, and it did not work. The i7 should be upgradable though! The 2nd and 3rd generation i7 use the same socket, so as long as the power requirements are the same, it should work fine.

im not shor what you meen when you say that upgrading a laptop GPU is not feasible  once pepole have foundout how to make the upgrade work it is a very good option ruther than buying a new laptop just look at the asus G73JH
or the clevo w860cu w870cu w880cu all of which have been upgraded with GPU s that we were at first told would not work . we just have to figer it out. im not ont to just give up because some1 says that "its just not feasible.

Hi, I have Asus G73sw with Chi Mei full hd screen. I would like to install there HD+ (1600x900) screen.
Gtx 460m is not enough powerful for 1920x1080 resolution in games, and playing in native resolution 1600x900 would give me several extra fps. My current screen has also 1 dead pixel.
My question is: Are there any good HD+ (1600x900) screens i could put to my laptop? It might be matte or glossy. Is it difficult to replace it?
    Ps.Sorry for my english.

Hello, just curious to see if someone might be able to give me an opinion about my Asus G73sw. Until I gought guild wars 2 I have not had a problem with this wonderful machine. All of a sudden the computer will shut off during gameplay and restart. Now I have HWINFO64 and Speedfan and while playing (with a wall outlet plugged into) the temps were getting up to 70c. I have a Storm SF-19 cooling fan and even with that the computer still shut off (while at low settings and the only thing running was the game). Now when I tried the game on max settings, with my browser open, HW64 WinAp Skype and playing in PvP with at least 50 players all around me, all running while NOT hooked to a wall outlet the machine ran without a hitch! Now am I crazy or is my adapter bad or something? Appreciate any advice, thank you!

Nope. Since the day I wrote that, have not had the issue a single time. Really, if I could keep the damn touchpad working correctly, which it does for various lengths of time, this would be nearly a perfect machine. My only issues are ones I knew when purchasing - no 20" screen (my 50 year old eyes keep wanting everything bigger!).

ASUS has software called " ASUS Splendid Video Enhancement Technology" that enhances the screen and makes the color come out more as well as make it easier on the eyes. (not talking about F.lux)
It seems to correct the color etc. My G55VW has the splendid utility and I love it.

Are there any types of software exactly like the "Splendid Video Enhancement Technology" for the NP9150/P150EM?

Hey Guys, had something very odd and concerning happen today. I'm wondering if anyone has had something similar happen to them. First, a little background. I have a G73SW-A1 that is a little over a year old. It's been in for service twice. The first time for the power jack failing. The second time because one of the keys on the keyboard stopped functioning. Now as to what happened... Earlier today I was watching a DVD movie and the machine crashed with the BSOD. I had to hold down the power button to shut the machine off. When I went to reach for the power button, I noticed that the entire right, upper corner of the computer was VERY HOT. I don't mean really warm, I mean HOT. It was almost to hot to touch. I had trouble holding the power button down for the three or four seconds whatever it is to shut the machine off it was so hot. It also had that "hot electronics odor to it". After shutting the machine off, I quickly unplugged the AC power and removed the battery. The battery casing was a little warm on the one side but not to bad. The battery was one of the first thing I worried about. I don't want that thing overheating and cooking off. I let the machine sit for a while until it the case was back to room temperature.

My first thought was that the fan on the right side had died or it was clogged and it was overheating. I grabbed a can of compressed air and gave couple of small shots of air into both air vents. I put the battery back in and plugged the AC power back in. The battery/power light on the front of the laptop lit up. I pushed the power button to start up the laptop and the system came up to the question about an improper shut down and if you want to run 'Windows normally' or whatever it is. I chose that option. The system came up as normal and it appeared that the fans were both working. My other thought was that on one of the trips in for service they put down that they replaced the "Main Board". I'm wondering if there could be an issue with either the main board or the AC plug (like a short or something). I used the laptop as normal and kept feeling to see if the case was getting warm at all but the laptop case remained cool to the touch. I continued watching a DVD and the temperature has remained ok. I have Real Temp running now which I'll keep running and monitoring the temps to see if they go up at all. It's been running fine throughout the day without any further issues.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem or any ideas as to what might have been the cause of this issue. Thanks.

Well, since my bluray player is randomly playing disks i didnt experience BSOD while watching movies but i did during the youtube videos.
Used to happen frequently but since i updated my nvidia drivers and flash player several weeks ago seems like things are back to normal.
I have had no overheating problems whatsoever. If your gpu is clocked, that might be one of the reasons too.

Quick question for those that have sent their laptops in for repair in the past. Has ASUS paid for the shipping for anyone? The only reason I ask is I had looked up the laptop model I bought on Amazon and they don't show the exact G73 model I bought but do show a G75 model. In fact that's what came up when I did the search for a G73 and also has the little note at the top for when you have already purchased that particular item (even though I bought a G73 not a G75). However, when looking at the specs of the G75 I see it shows "2 way free shipping". I also just realized this is from a 3rd party seller which is not Amazon. However, warranty coverage should still be done by ASUS directly. Does ASUS pay for shipping at all (either way) that I have some how missed? Both times I've sent mine in nothing was said about ASUS paying for shipping. Just wondering. Thanks

Edit to add: If it isn't one thing it's another. My ROG Mouse that came with my G73SW-A1 laptop which I purchased from Amazon isn't working properly. The right mouse button fails to do anything when clicked. I tried the obvious of unplugging it and plugging it back in, etc but no luck. When you click the LEFT mouse button, you feel a very slight "click" which is not present when you click the right mouse button. Has anyone ever tried to RMA just the mouse for repair. I would assume it would be covered under the same warranty although I'm not positive.

Anyone replace their 4gb sticks with 8gb? I know there's three available sockets (four, but I'm not pulling my keyboard), but I'm wondering if I can spend $90 and get my G73SW up to 16gb? I'm not asking if I can get to 16gb with 4gb sticks - I know I can. I'm not asking if it's supported or theoretically possible - I am asking if anyone has done it.

Can't believe they are so cheap!!!!

Does anybody know what the fastest memory a G73SW-A1 REV 5 will run? I am trying to decide whether tip upgrade to 16GB of DDR3-12800 or stick with the default speed.

    CPU-Z Validator 3.1

I already tried searching the thread but the Search tool sucks.

@SoulRider the top right hand corner under the power button is in fact where the graphics card is located, i would recommend contacting ASUS before your warranty runs out, i think ASUS standard warranty is for 2 years, so you should still have some time to RMA it again. Very weird problem, and i've preety much read through all the G73 posts on this forum, as i am a G73SW user, and i've never seen anything like the problem you have described. If the casing itself was hot to the touch, something is seriously wrong and you should get it checked out asap before more damage is done. The burning smell u mentioned is of course not a good sign either.

Also, ASUS has paid for the shipping of my laptop when i had it RMA'd due to a faulty wireless card. Im in the UK and DPD came to collect the laptop, and delivered it back to me (paid by ASUS). I believe as long as it is a genuine ASUS product, RMA will be fine, and you should have no issues with getting it repaired by them free of charge.

The mouse is not covered under warranty, have you tried installing the Asus ROG mouse drivers? If you have the G73 then im assuming you have the Asus ROG GX800 mouse:

    http://www.asus.com/Peripherals_Accessories/Keyboard_Mouse/GX800/#download

@NorCalAI i believe only 2 of the 4 ram slots are easily accessible, not sure if the laptop can take 8GB sticks though. 16GB is overkill in my opinion though. If i was to ever upgrade in the future i would just replace the two easily accessible 2GB sticks and put 4GB in each slot, totaling 12GB, then perhaps invest in a 3rd gen Ivy bridge mobile cpu and swap it out.

@Deneteus i think 1600mhz is the fastest RAM you can use in the G73SW, i think standard speed is fine though to be honest, dont think there is much performance benefit in getting the expensiver 1600mhz RAM.

I haven't heard of anyone being able to upgrade the GPU in the G73SW. I'd be interested as well but I just haven't seen it mentioned that it's an option.

Ok so i have a problem of my own that i am struggling to fix, heres how it goes.
My G73 has never been able to reach the network speeds of my other laptops or desktops, both wirelessly and on the LAN. The g73sw has sometimes given me as slow LAN speeds of around 5Mbps on speedtest.net, when my other laptops are able to receive 100Mbps-105Mbps. Im from London and am on Virgin Medias 100Mb package, and typically i do receive these speeds constantly other than between the hours of 1pm and 4pm where it drops to around 80Mbps. I have carried out hundreds of speedtests in my attempt to solve this issue, so the test server and whatnot is definately not the issue.
I had the laptop RMA'd a month ago, as the wireless and wired speeds were becomming horrible to use, and i was only able to utilise around 1/10th of my ISP's internet speed. Asus replaced the atheros ar9285 wireless card for a new one, and also claim to have replaced the ethernet port.

When the laptop came back, speeds had not improved at all. They were the same as before so ii decided to try upgrade the laptops wireless card myself. I swapped the junk atheros ar9285 card for an Intel 6300 card, and am currently using that with the 2 antennas in the g73sw. One antenna is not being used currently on the card. My wireless speeds increased slightly, range increased a lot. However still i am not able to recieve the full 100Mbps on wireless whereas the older laptops in the house with standard wireless cards are able to reach 100Mbps with ease, over and over again.
Thinking that perhaps it could be the junk superhub, i decided to invest in the new Asus N66 Dark Knight router, which is connected to the superhub in modem mode. Wireless range has increased by a lot more, and my laptop is constantly showing it is connected at 300Mbps, however speedtests are only going up to 50Mbps maximum still from my g73sw.....
I am absolutely stuck on what to do now, i had tried older and most recent drivers for the ethernet, atheros ar9285 and the intel 6300, all with little to no success...
I have seen some other Asus laptop users saying similar things, a G74 owner has posted on the ROG forums and had no luck, will find the link later and post it here.
Can anyone help me? What could i try now?
Is there some type of network controller that controls both ethernet and wireless card? Because what i dont get is why both wired and wireless are affected by the same problem.

Just to clear up also, all wireless speedtests were conducted 2metres from the router in the same room. Please fire away with as many questions as possible, this problem needs to be fixed, and Asus havent done anything about it, they claim the issue was fixed!

    Hey guys!

I bought a used G73SW on Saturday. So far I'm pretty impressed with it. There were a few issues with the keyboard lights not working and whatnot, but being atleast somewhat tech savvy, I managed to fix those.

However, the seller boasted that the laptop had 8 gigs of RAM, which according to the system specs on ASUS' site, it should have. However, at home I decided to run some diagnostic tools and was dumbfounded when all programs told me the laptop had only 4 gigs of RAM. I opened up the bottom panel and sure enough, there was only one stick of RAM to be seen. This is where it gets interesting, atleast for me. I decided to consult the Users Manual that came with the laptop and regarding RAM it told me the following:

1 stick of RAM inside the computer: It should be easily swappable under the bottom panel
2 sticks of RAM inside the computer: The first one is under the bottom panel, second one somewhere deeper under the hood(= not easily reachable)
3 sticks of RAM inside the computer: First and second same as previous step, but the third one is even more hard to reach
4 sticks of RAM inside the computer: First, second and third same as previous, but fourth one goes in the slot under the 1st stick(= the second easy-to-access slot)

    Have I understood this correctly?

Now, this was the sellers second G73SW, as he'd RMA'd the first one after the screen had failed. Apparently this was a completely new replacement unit. So maybe they had a little mishap with the assembly at the factory, who knows.

If I am indeed missing one 4 gig stick of RAM, I was wondering the following:
Do I really have to add the RAM sticks 'in order' according to the ASUS manual, or can I just pop the second RAM stick under the 1st RAM stick(= the slot where the 4th stick of RAM should go according to the manual)?

I pushed and overclocked my card sometime ago and drivers were crashing quite frequently. Now since i lowered my clocks everything is back to normal.

hey guys, the right GPU fan on my laptop has been really loud and a few people seem to think its a bearing failing. I've ordered a replacement GPU fan/heatsink seen here: Genuine Asus G73S G73SW-BST6 VIDEO CARD COOLING FAN WITH HEATSINK 13GN0U1AM040 | eBay

now that its in i'm wondering if theres any guides to actually swapping the fans? I've never done this before and I am a bit worried about taking it apart myself having no tools etc. Would it be better to just take it to a shop?
