Nice to hear that the fan issue is solved in the 208 bios. I have N71Ja and I cant see any new bios update. Can I use the N71Jq bios 208 instead?
-
Maybe you should check if some other program is not conflicting and causing the BSOD.
I had a similar problem before which was due to conflict between two programs.
I had a BSOD with NetIO.sys at the boot up screen.
It was happening randomly and only when I was at my company network.
It was also a strange problem and took me some long time to find what was causing it.
In the begenning I thought that maybe the network card is defective, but I found out that stangely it was a conflict between Windows Computer Browser Service and Zonealarm Internet Security Suite.
It used to disappear after turning of Computer Browser service.
After 8 months of waiting, Microsoft solved it through a hotfix. -
Hello...i bought the Asus N71JQ-TY023V in june this year. Everything was ok with it...no fan problems despite having the 204 bios...until now...today i turned it on and wanted to move an icon on the desktop...the moment i dragged the icon some lines appeared on the screen and cut the upper part of the desktop. These lines are like the ones that appear when you select a refresh rate that the monitor cannot support. These lines disappeared after i restarted. Now it does not show any sign of problem. What might be the problem in your opinion?...I'm not a computer guy...i know a little about computers...i'm just afraid it might be something serious like artifacts from the video card
-
Does the N71JQ-X1 output 5.1 sound through HDMI? (I did read a LOT of pages and search "surround" and "5.1", so sorry if this has already been addressed. The Asus website does not mention it...)
Thanks! -
-
-
It may also be worth mentioning that I'm running genuine windows, I know that non-genuine windows can sometimes cause driver conflicts and BSOD - worth a thought. -

Hello guys, I will get my N71JQ-TY032 tomorrow, and I can't wait!
Intel Core i7-720QM 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L2 Cache)
Intel® PM55 with Intel® CoreTM i7 processors
4096MB DDR3 1066MHz
HDD 500GB SATA 5400rpm
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730 1GB DDR3 (DirectX 11)
No OS
I am glad that I saw a lot of positive comments and satisfied customers among you here, I hope I will be one of them also!
I read a lot of post here on this topic and some other topics also, but I still have some questions.
1. My main question is: my laptop is coming without OS installed, from where do I start?
What I mean is, do I install WIN7 first, or install new BIOS, or it doesn't matter?
2. For the HD5730, do I install driver from ASUS download page, or from ATI? Which driver, v10.08?
3. Which BIOS is the best, 208?
Thank you guys for having the nerve to answer my boooring questions... -
hmm getting some random bsod
Temps are all normal
I think it has something to do with the network card it only seem to happen when I am downloading alot of stuff using Jdownloader. Even then its random
Never happens during gaming either. Also only happens when I'm on the wifi downloading and not using the cable.
Bluescreen view says this

Very sad to say that I was only a real member of this owners' lounge for about 36 hours.
I had to return my X1 due to a bad HDMI port. It actually wiggled a little when I plugged in the cable, and of course it couldn't maintain a connection if I didn't hold my breath. Just lightly touching any part of the touchpad or keyboard would make it drop the connection to my HDTV.
Yes, I tried different cables, all of which worked in other devices.
The other disappointment was the apparent lack of 1080p ouput from the ATI 5730 (even with latest drivers). I had an Acer with an ATI 5650 that did put out 1080p from the HDMI. And ATI's website has specs indicating this exceeds 1080p.
Otherwise, I absolutely loved this machine, and that is why this is such a huge disappointment.
The upcoming N73JQ address a few port placement issues in a good way, but I'm not keen to spend more on a machine with a less capable GPU.
The only reason I didn't order a replacement N71JQ-X1 is because the strange placement of the HDMI port, crammed in UNDER the ExpressCard slot, makes me think this problem might come up again.
I need the HDMI port for presentations and home entertainment, so I'd probably be using it five times a week or more.
I hope all you other more faithful owners have nothing but great luck, performance, and fun with your good looking laptops! -
i just bought this laptop a month ago. everything runs fine but i want to know how to disassemble it to apply new thermal paste to the cpu/gpu. right now at idle, it runs at ~54 C. also what bloatware should i remove from the system?
-
@Cary Ader: I'm very sorry to hear that, I can imagine how terible it feels...
I hope you will get a good replacement for it! And I also hope that it won't happen to me...
Please answer what do you install when you install graphic driver:
1. Full Software Suite
or
2. Catalyst Control Center
+
3. HydraVision Package
+
4. Avivo Package
Do you install these Additional Downloads??! (3+4) -
-
Ok, as for your question, I had a little trouble getting the drivers to download properly. I finally went with Option 1 and went through the routine. When I tried just downloading the Catalyst, it seemed as if the driver itself didn't get installed---the install routine never said I had to restart.
But, like I said earlier, the upgrade did not give me 1080p output from the (flakey, loose) HDMI port.
On my old desktop, when I upgraded to the latest CCC, I did get higher resolution options to allow me to use my new 1080p SyncMaster.
See you in the G73jw lounge? (But the machine is on backorder now!!!) -
Hi Guys
First of all a very special thanks to Turbogear and Ken Lee for solving the fan issue.
To me this was very annoying and i was almost about to RMA it, but thanks to you guys i didnt have too.
I'm a very happy owner of the X77JQ-TY004V
But i do ha a small problem with the usb port located under the expresscard slot, it works but not very well. The usb thingy in the usb port is broken loose but not completly. Do any of you know if it is possible to just solder it off and replace it with another usb port.
I have dowloaded the guide on how to take this laptop apart so i'm very tempted to give it a try.
But before i do is this something asus cover by warranty ?
If not how much will a replacement motherboard cost me ?
Jackal1 -
Your issue sounds like a classic warranty issue, so why not just set up an RMA? Of course what you are considering would void the warranty, IMHO.
Good luck.
Thankfully the N73JQ set to follow this soon looks like it has better port layouts. Squeezing stuff under the ExpressCard slot does not seem like a good idea! -
Well the only reasen i'm considering fixing it myself is because i hate waiting and i love breaking stuff and then fix it again
but offcourse if this really is cowered by the warranty, i'm gonna RMA it offcourse.
Now that i have been reading all the posts here i'm hoping Turbogear could maybe ask Ken Lee about this becasue i would really hate to RMA it and then get it back whitout it beeing fixed.
And why they have put the Hdmi and the usb under the express is to me not very understadable, i'm accutally scared of using the hdmi now because of this. -
At least you aren't one of those people who broke something trying to force a USB plug into the eSATA or HDMI ports! At least, I hope you aren't -
...what to do ?
-
-
and no i absolutely did not force the hdmi in to the usb slot
So when do we get wireless usb then -
Thankfully for Asus, but not thankfully for us - unless they care to exchange the new model for our model. -
I think the way the ports were "placed" under the ExpressCard slot just made them especially vulnerable to being damaged. Ports centerd in the side areas have more fairly tough plastic above and below. I sent mine back primarily because it came with a loose HDMI port. The port itself wiggled a little.
(The other reason I don't want the N71 is because the one I received, an X1 version, didn't output 1080p from that flaky port. The highest setting indicated for the HD output was 720p, but my TV and the display panels where I work are 1080p. Couldn't get 1080p even with the newest ATI drivers.)
So...just ten minutes ago, I put in my order for the N73JQ-A2. Should be here in a week. From the pics, the ports are arranged very niceley--even a couple on the back. I just hope they don't wiggle!
Time for a new Owners' Lounge? -
Still BSODing 116... ntbtlog.txt doesn't help at all.. all the drivers are latest from Asus site. Sometimes it will boot without the BSOD sometimes it won't what the F.
-
If what I get is like every other laptop ever made, it too will have a list of issues. But that is for another thread... -
I am back after being missing from here for some time.
Actually I was preparing for my PhD defense.
So now I have finished it. I have now earned a PhD degree as Doctor of Engineering.
The Nvidia graphic card is weaker than the ATI 5730.
The new product should be an upgrade than the older one, but it is pity that ASUS did not use ATI GPU on this one.
Though the ATI 5730 was released 10 months before the Nvidia 425M but it is still a winner.
According to notebookcheck 5730 is about 16% faster than 425M: NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
It could be some configuration issue together with your TV.
I am running my N71JQ Monday to Friday for 10 hours each day at 1900x1200 resolution through HDMI port without any single issue.
This is higher resolution than 1080p.
You may fix it yourself but most probably you will void your warranty by doing this except if you are a soldering expert.
Usually desoldering devices without leaving any traces is something for the experts and you need the right tools.
In the place where I work we have professional soldering station and a microscope and even then removing a device from the PCB and soldering a new one without leaving any traces requires some training.
If you leave some traces of tampering on the mainboard and then for some other reason you have to RMA your system in the future most probably they will not honour the warranty.
The drivers on the ASUS's N71JQ download page are quiet old.
You can try the latest ones from this site:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html
This is the N61JQ driver thread, but N71JQ has the same hardware so you can use all the drivers from there except for bios file.
Let's hope the BSODs are due to some driver problem or some software issue. It could also be hardware related.
It could also be a good idea to try to install a fresh windows and then run it without any extra software for while to see if this problem occurs again or not. -
Well, I received my laptop back from Asus. I sent it for a repair service on the HDMI port.
The Asus representative over the phone did not seem to be very knowledgable. I guess I am more technical than she was and did not understand many of the terminilogy that I used. I told her I had already updated the bios update and drivers for the graphics card while she still insisted that i run through some basic tutorials involving rebooting the system and going to the control panel. She also placed me on hold for quite a long time while she had to find answers through a manual. The total time I spent over the phone was nearly an hour before she gave me an RMA# to send the machine for repair.
As for the repair service, it was very poor. I received my laptop back without any resolution. They simply ran "tests" and stated that everything was fine.
Letter received:
Your Notebook has passed all functionality test after being repaired by our engineer.
The unit is working fine and no trouble found. We installed Asus DVD and working fine.
Sony LCD, TV , HDMI test ok.
We ran the following tests: for RAM, HDD, WC, WL, BF, FK, BATTERY, SOUND, TP, KB, USB, CPU, GPU, WIN and all tests passed
We are shipping the unit back to you.
Thank you,
Ritendra Prakash
Letter I sent back:
Mr. Prakash,
So there were nothing that needed to be replaced or installed?
Below, you mentioned that the HDMI was tested on a SONY LCD TV.
I had included a letter with the laptop that specifically said that it did not work with a Samsung LED UN40B6000.
Letter Received:
Dear Mr. XXXX,
There was nothing that needed to be replaced or installed.
HDMI is good and should work with any external monitor.
Here is the FedEx tracking number 7939XXXXXX
Thanks,
Ritendra Prakash
As I said before, there was no resolution to my problem. The HDMI port is still defective in my opinion and does not connect to my television. This was one of the reasons why I bought this laptop and it disappoints me that I cannot use this feature. -
@phibaman
Can you please provide some more details about your problem?
Is the HDMI port not working at all with the TV?
If possible maybe try to connect your laptop to some other TV or monitor through HDMI to see if it works.
If ASUS says they tested HDMI then I suppose they did it and found it to be working except if they wrote that without actually testing it. -
Already reformatted it twice. -
Hey, congratulations!!!
Turbogear has helped a lot of people here. -
-
"I wonder why you were not able to get 1080p from N71JQ.
It could be some configuration issue together with your TV."
Thank you, turbogear, for taking an interest. Unfortunately for testing purpsoses, I've already sent the unit back to the retailer.
On other laptops, such as two Acers and a Toshiba, I could see the available output resolutions in the graphics consoles whether the units were plugged into my Samsung HDTV or not. And those three other laptops immediately allowed me to go to 1080p.
Perhaps there are different configurations. Remember mine was an X1...
I am writing back about this issue because others are having HDMI port/output problems, and I wanted to be complete with my info. I wish I had more to add.
"According to notebookcheck 5730 is about 16% faster than 425M: NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M - Notebookcheck.net Tech"
As for the GeForce 425m, I agree that it is disappointing that we are not moving forward with a chip faster than the 5730m, that this is comparable to a 5650m. This is clearly aimed at business and multimedia, not gaming. That said, the only game that is tested for both the 425m and the 5730m is Resident Evil 5, and the scores are virtually identical.
In Windows experience it is 3% slower than the 5730.
Also note that notebookcheck is using an Acer 5745DG with a Core i5 for testing. The Asus with the Core i7-740qm should give faster performance on some tests.
All of which tells me that, no, the GPU is not an upgrade, but the CPU is a slight upgrade, and the arrangement of ports works better for me. Also, if the newer model truly has an aluminum lid, that is a plus for me.
My reasoning is that I'm getting a machine that overall, in theory, I will like better and that in perceived speed using real world apps is very close to the N71.
I would have loved a faster card, but I needed to get a working laptop NOW. Perhaps Asus will listen to the collective groan of customers who do want a a faster GPU, but I cannot wait at this time for a possible 10% - 20% increase in graphics performance at an undetermined future date. And I don't like the style or the $500 USD higher price tag of the G73J's.
So, I went with the newest version of the N series after I had a bad experience with a wiggly HDMI port on the older version.
By the way, I did start an owner's lounge for the newer one, and I would appreciate your suggestions and help with running benchmarks over in that forum if you have time.
Best of luck with your new degree, Doctor! Congratulations on a great, arduous accomplishment. (I know the blood and sweat that goes into it because my spouse is working towards one in a medical field.) And enjoy your machines for many years to come! -
How many people here are having trouble with the hdmi and other ports on the left side? I haven't even tried out the hdmi yet. What about the usb3? Has anyone tried that out for any usb3 function yet?

OK people, I need your advice on flashing BIOS, what would be the best way to do it?!
I read 2 suggestions on this forum for doing that:
1. Using EasyFlash - http://forum.notebookreview.com/2519461-post1.html
2. Using WinFlash - http://forum.notebookreview.com/6740030-post140.html
I have EasyFlash in my BIOS already, I got my laptop with v200 BIOS.
So one guy saying that EasyFlash is the best and safest way to do it, and the other guy saying completely opposite thing!
WHO IS CORRECT??!
But it would have a different purpose from this one (N61JQ driver thread), I wanted to talk there about all these utilities from ASUS, which one is worth installing and which one is not, what does a specific utility do at all...
YOU could start a topic like that I suppose! -
The latest drivers for that listed display driver in the installation process ATI V8.752.0.0, made it BSOD even more with 116. Reformatting yet aaaagain on Tuesday....
-
Put the Bios file on a USB stick, which is formatted with FAT32 structure.
Do not flash in any other way! (e.g. from the harddisk)

Hi,
just some information about getting suspend and hibernate working for Linux users.
I'm on Arch Linux 32 bit. You need to use pm-utils with uswsusp, I tried hibernate-script but that didn't work. Also, in bios, you need to set the usb-controller to ehci, because in xhci things don't work.
Suspend then works okay out of the box.
Hibernate also works but after waking you have a black screen with a blinking cursor. Then you need to Alt + f7 (for your desktop tty) to get your screen back.
Right now I'm a happy camper.
Regards to all n71jq users. My machine is a x77jq, it has only one hdd but is the same as the n71jq in all other ways (uses the same bios too, thx to Turbogear for v08 with low fan noise).

Thanks Turbogear for the advice
but there is no point soldering now
When i got home a few days ago my laptop was off so i pressed the power button and it started but it wont go past the bios, it just stops loading.
So i tried everythin i could think of like replacing ram and ssd and harddrives etc but it just wont start up.
i have taken the laptop apart now and must say it was alot easier than i thought it would be, so now i only need a replacement mobo for my X77JQ.
So the question is where can i get a replacement motherboard ?
i need to get i fixed so i can give it to my brother.
i have bought a new laptop btw, a brand new G73JHand i gotta tell ya guys it was love at first sight
and it has backlit keyboard aswell very very nice.
Jackal1 -
Congratulations, Turbogear! Kudos!
-
I suppose you still have warranty.
Why do you not send it for repair?
-
Note: I previously sent a request for Samsung to send a technician to check on the television and he agreed that it was laptop that was not recognizing the external monitors. There is something defective or missing drivers with the HDMI port. -
How many other people are having, or not having, trouble connecting an external monitor to the hdmi port? Everybody, or is it rare? Traveling all the time as I am I haven't yet had the chance to test mine.

Hello,
My first post - I'm a little confused if you're just supposed to just jump in on Page 158 and start firing newbie questions, but since I can't find a better place to ask, here goes.
I've just been given a N71JQ-XI for work. It came loaded with Ubuntu. No offense to the legions of Linux lovers, but let's just say it's not instant love. Some of us actually like Windows 7!
1) Tried to search this forum under "hard drives" and got nothing like I need to answer the question, "I know I have to buy a connector to add a second hard drive; but are there any other problems besides buying a connector?" Anyone does this successfully yet? Connector and HD recommendations?
2) Nothing seems to happen when I press F9 when booting to get into the recovery partition. I'm not sure how much human error I've committed - I've held the button down while booting, pressed it repeatedly - should I start assuming whoever put Linux on the machine erased the recovery partititon? Anything else to try?
3) I need at least a dual boot - can't live without Win 7 cause I do a lot of audio recording, and Linux-heads can scream about how great their OS is, but when it comes to audio recording, forget it! There's no software that's remotely competitive. So. . . I should mention I don't own a Win7 install disk . . . if I can recover to the original Win7 installation, can I add Ubuntu later in a dual boot arrangement? I don't want to offend the company that gave me the lappie, as they're crazy about Linux and I may have to share some programs. Is this a fairly simple operation or is it fraught with peril?
Thanks in advance. -
Does the screen say Express Gate on it, i think you might be presing the express Gate button. Press the big Silver button on very right of the Silver bar under the LCD screen. I dont think the n71jq has the option to start in Ubuntu right out of the box.
