Does the screen say Express Gate on it, i think you might be presing the express Gate button. Press the big Silver button on very right of the Silver bar under the LCD screen. I dont think the n71jq has the option to start in Ubuntu right out of the box.
Model 3?[/QUOTE]
The screen does not say Express Gate. Are you talking about the "On" button? That's gonna turn the machine on, not boot to a Win7 recovery???
It definitely starts Ubuntu - no dual boot option at present.
Not sure where to find Model #, ID = 2.5 It's running with 1066 RAM, so it must be slightly older - any way to bump this up without changing the RAM? Option is greyed in BIOS.
Allurgroceries, glad Ardour is happening for you, but while I'm a newbie at laptops I'm a pro at audio - it doesn't even have MIDI. I'm sure there's lots to love in the open source world - digital audio would be its Achilles heel at the moment. . .

Good luck. -
I just want to comment your statement that both devices (tv and laptop) have to powered up in order for this connection to work!
Let me say first that I also did it that way (both devices were powered up and than I connected them), but that is the wrong way to do it!
Both devices have to be completely powered down before connecting, in order to avoid electric shock and burning down your HDMI port.
At least, that is what I've heard and what I've read on the internet.
Next time I will definitely try to connect them when they are both powered down, and I will write down the result... -
Out of curiosity, what interface do you use with Ardour? Not all my productions use MIDI, so I should check it out. sub-5ms latency does work for me. . .
Do you know the answer to the 2nd HD? I know it takes a little skill, but have people successfully installed one in an XI?
And do you use the Esata port for audio? Is it fast enough for an audio drive if the 2nd HD is too much hassle? -
I was trying out the switch on the bottom left that apparently turns on/off bluetooth and wifi, now theres a problem. When I turn it back on, the bluetooth turns on as normal but the wifi is STAYING OFF...
EDIT: Apparently the driver can't tolerate the switch's presence, I managed to restore it. Never touching that switch again.. -

I'm pretty sure nobody in here has ever successfully added the second HD to the X1 and lived to talk about it, if I remember correctly something essential was missing on the motherboard. You could try asking our brothers in the N61JQ lounge, there seem to be some tech-savvy people over there that might be able to help. -
Hey guys,
Having a serious problem with my n71 these days.
For the past few weeks, multiple times a day, my computer slows to a crawl. My browser becomes so laggy as to be unusable, and if I'm listening to music or podcasts the sound becomes garbled. Everything is slow. Whenever this happens I notice that the computer is very hot. If I put my fingers next to the fan when this is happening, it's too hot to keep them there for long. Not gonna burn my fingers or anything but it's pretty damn hot.
This seems to happen mostly when I'm running a few programs, but nothing that should strain this computer. Just basic stuff like browsing the internet while listening to music will do it. When it starts to happen I can close the programs and leave the computer alone for 10-15 minutes and it will cool down again and run normally. But then if I use the computer normally again, it'll heat pand slow down again eventually, sometimes 15 minutes later, sometimes an hour later. Sometimes a few hours.
Actually, when it first started doing this some weeks ago, it would slow down so much that my computer would literally shut itself off. After I installed the new Bios (which also fixed the annoying cycling fan issue, thank goodness) it no longer shuts off. It just slows down a lot as I have described.
Sort of at the end of my rope here. Anyone have any ideas? I'm considering erasing everything and restarting from scratch, but I'm thinking might be a big waste of time and effort. Any thoughts? -

It's overheating, probably not a software problem. Check the fan, make sure it's still working normally, clean out the vent area if it's clogged with dust, and after that see if it's OK.
-
Thanks for the reply! When you say to check the fan to see if its working normally, how can I tell? The fan is certainly still running. And it definitely ramps up when the computer gets hot, which is what eventually cools it down if I leave it alone for a few minutes. But obviously something is wrong because the computer should be able to keep itself from getting to that overheated state.

I just mean, first make sure it's working (it is), and then listen for any grinding or rattling sounds coming from the fan, but as long as there's a good amount of air coming out it's probably not the fan that's the problem.
If it's not clogged with dust, the next possibility is that your thermal paste or heatsink is not applied correctly, you're probably still in warranty so it'd be safest to send it back to ASUS to let them take care of that. -
Nobody I know was so far able to add second HDD to X1 model.
The bracket for the second HDD is missing and non of the ASUS spare part sellers sell that one so far.
As ALLurGroceries suggested, this looks like overheating issue and could be due to not sufficient thermal past on either CPU or GPU. -

You can use programs like HWMonitor or Everest. -
What is the newest ATI driver right now? Im using 8.752.0.0 and all of the 8.760.0.0 ones don't have a display driver for N71JQ when I install them and its STILL bluescreening 116 50% of all startups.. im close to just installing all the bloatware crap on the install disc to mimic what its like when the laptop was first bought maybe it will do something...
Yes I tried Catalyst 10.10 from AMD.. -
Well I've lived through the dual boot which actually went quite well. I also realized a inherited a version of Ubuntu that had been so thoroughly "customized" it was unrecognizable and far from the way the OS was supposed to look and act. After seeing a proper installation, it wasn't bad at all, elegant even. An iso file of Win 7 worked perfectly with the laptop key.
However, I now have no Asus ultities installed. I imagine at least some of those are useful. Anyone know if I can grab these from somewhere? Had to install ATI drivers on the Windows side - would like at least the correct sound driver, cause what I'm hearing sounds low output and hardly exciting as it's supposed to be. Is there a driver for the sound too? -
You can grab the latest versions of the drivers from here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html
This is N61JQ thread but all the drivers except for bios file are the same as for N71JQ.
All the ASUS applications can be downloaded from ASUS website here:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-
In the site you will see three fields.
In the first field on this site select Notebook.
In the second field select Apps.
Leave the third field at default and hit the search button.
You will get to the webpage where you will see a list of all the ASUS applications that usually come pre-installed on the notebook. -
Hello, could someone tell me what screw models should i buy to connect my hdd board to main board and the ones to screw on it to case?
-
I am using it and have no problem on my laptop... -
-
What Asus specific drivers or utilities did you install beside the obvious ATK ACPI/Hotkey/KB filter/ATK Media/ATK OSD, and do you have AA/AF on or app specified? -
I was using ATI Notebook Catalyst 10.8, now I'm using Catalyst 10.10. I've had a couple of system reformats mostly due to my own stupidity, the laptop has given me no trouble. I have used it with the stock Windows 7 Home Premium and a couple of Windows 7 Ultimate installs. On my first Ultimate install, I installed all the asus tools. Once I realised they were mostly worthless then on my second and further installs I only installed the atk acpi and atkosd programs, nothing else. I get all of my drivers from the appropriate websites (realtek, ati) and not the asus support site.
I hope that helps. From what I've read of your comments, it doesn't sound like you're doing much wrong. Have you considered RMA? -
, because I wanted to try all those utilities!
Now I know that they are all worthless, so I will do a clean install and install only the basic drivers!
But when I think again, there is one thing I didn't install, and that is camera driver, because I saw that it was working without any driver. I know that this is probably not important to you at all, but that is the answer to your question...
AA/AF is set to default, Application Managed!
What BIOS version are you using, did you update it??! -
Yes the bios is 208.
-
Maybe you should RMA it.
Did you try to rum memtest?
It could be that the RAM is defective or not properly seated.
I recently built a desktop PC based on ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe and it was also having random BSODs and lockups at startup.
On that particular system, I found out that the RAM was not compatible with the mainboard. I replaced them and since then all is running fine. The memtest showed me many errors. -
Can't even call technical support.. the person at the switchboard hears me with flying colors, get to the support agent I can hear them but have a hard time understanding them while they can't hear me at all. Like EVERY PC related company is exactly like this, Asus, Gigabyte, DFI ughhhhhhhhhh. -

OK Turbogear, thanks!
I wanted to ask you guys what are the temperatures of your notebook, during gaming and during doing usual stuff (net, music...)
The temp of my cpu now is 56C, and it is like that (up to 60C) when I am not doing anything special! GPU is 52C.
In games (I installed Crysis today and played for 5min) the temp of cpu goes up to 78C and GPU temp was around 66C-68C.
Are these temperatures dangerous for my notebook, and do you have similar temps? -
In fact your GPU temps are lower than on mine. On mine the GPU usually hovers near to 58-60°C in the 2D mode.
In 3D mode mine goes upto around 78-84°C. -
Would you recommend buying a CoolPad, will these temperatures make the life of our notebooks shorter?
-
What version do people have for this driver?
-
I have the same version as you!
-
I purchased an N71 but I'm having problems with setting up for a dual monitor system for my projector. I want to view my notes pages on powerpoint on my laptop but show the slide on the projector can anyone help?
-
The one you have is the latest version. It is a part of the ATK driver package.
I have the latest driver package v1.0.0006 and it also contains the same driver version as yours.
This driver came when Win7 was released in 2009. ASUS has already released a couple of ATK package version, but the ATK driver in all of these packages is still the same.
Obviously, it means that they did not find anything wrong with it so far.
You can download the latest ASUS ATK driver package from here:
http://support.asus.com/download/do...e_WIN7_32_WIN7_64_z100006.zip&f_type=26&os=30
Do you have some problems with this driver?
For getting it working like this, you have to first set the projector as an Extended Desktop.
You can do this using the ATI tray tool.
After you have connected your projector set it onto Extended Desktop mode.
After that you have to do settings inside the Powerpoint so that the slides will be displayed on the projector. In Office 2010 the appropriate settings are located under Slide Show tab.
For your version of office you can look onto online help to do the appropriate settings. -
Its just that I can use it in any way I want and it never BSODs during use or stress, just when booting half the time and when it does, only once then it will boot fine. Im not ready to RMA yet im not convinced its hardware, the way it's behaving just doesn't add up. I haven't tried disabling other autostart stuff the same method they did in that thread which I will try tomorrow.. -
Did you try the memtest?
I am not sure if the ATK driver is causing BSODs for you. I personally did not have problems with the ATK tools except that with one of the older versions the hotkeys were not working after waking from sleep.
I don't have that issue now with the latest version. -
Hi
I'm wondering if this computer supports Wake on Lan? I can't seem to find an option in the Bios menu. Am I right in assuming if there is no option in the bios menu, then WOL won't work, unless the computer is in standby? -
Turbogear, did you try to run 3dmark 06 on your lappy?
I think I am getting a very low score on my laptop, models with weaker configuration are getting better score than I do...
Even on notebookcheck.net they say for HD5730 that the min score is 8020, and I am getting 6700...
P.S.
@ pin: I can't help you with your question, I am not familiar with WOL feature, never used it... -
I will try to do it this weekend. -
Normal 3DMark for this computer, which 4 Gb RAM and stock GPU settings (650/800) is indeed a little over 8k.
You can reach 10k if you don't mind your system crashing every 5 mins -
-
-
So...it's me again...no one responded to my lasts posts...but anyway...here's another problem: i have the n71jq ty023v...and whenever i try scanning with kaspersky i get a bsod with ntfs.sys something...this started happening yesterday...there was no problem before...i have the 10.8 catalyst if that helps with something...the older problems that i had hadn't manifested themselves again but who knows...
-
So it seems there is something wrong in your case.
Did you check if the Power4Gear is set to maximum performace mode?
Maybe try reinstall Kaspersky. -
I am not using Power4Gear, my Power Option is set to Balanced now (windows controlled setting), but I tried to run the test with set to High Performance (also windows controlled) and the score was the same!
I am not sure what is wrong with my notebook. Your RAM is faster, your hdd is also faster (7200rpm), but the difference in score is really huge!
Did you run the test with 3dmark settings (resolution) set to default?
Also, did you disable your anti-virus and other programs running in the background and restart your pc before running the test?
It is advised to do that before running the test in order to get the higher score... I did all that and I couldn't get more than 7000 after all...
Also, let me ask you what was your CPU score and what was your FPS during the CPU test??!
My CPU score was the lowest, and my FPS was 0 or 1 during the CPU test!
My cpu score is 1340...
ATI Crossfire is Disabled, is this OK?!
I am really not sure what is wrong with my system, because it is working really good, I mean fast and stable!
Only one thing though, I installed ATT (Ati Tray Tool) in order to monitor CPU/GPU temps while playing games, but the moment I run ATT I get a BSOD!!
EDIT:
My last benchmark!
Turbogear, what OS are you using? I use Windows7 64bit.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
@ max 0401
Your GPU score is ok, but your CPU score should be about 2900 or more. Make sure you are not running any other applications that can use your CPU power while youre benchmarking. -
So it seems like no-one has tried to see if WOL works via the BIOS?
-
I did not disable my antivirus (Zonealarm Extreme Security Suite) during the benchmark and I did restart the system before the benchmark.
All the background processes that are usually running on my system were still active, but I did not run any other programs during the benchmarking.
The operating system that I am using is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
Here are results as they were displayed by 3DMark 06 Basic Edition (Build 1.2.0):
3DMark Score 8010
SM 2.0 Score 2902
SM 3.0 Score 3611
CPU Score 2937
OS Windows 7
CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz
CPU Speed 1596 MHz
GPU ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
Memory 8192 MB
