Yah, I just checked it out. You will not see the usb boot option unless you have a bootable USB device connected to one of the usb ports. Prepare your bootable usb stick connect it to a USB port than boot the laptop and go into the BIOS and look at the boot options. You will now see a third boot option. Go into boot option 1 and set it to your usb stick, then boot up and away you go.

    Have fun

Hi all. I'm trying to find out if my model (N71JQ) has an official USB3 port. USB3 ports are supposedly BLUE in colour. I have stickers plastered all over the laptop claiming USB3 etc etc yet I see NO BLUE port.

    Can anyone explain this?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

just finished the whole thread... Thank you very much for all the information. Congratulation to Turbogear for his PhD (I am working on mine right now).
    My expiriences with the N71JQ-X1:
I own it for nearly 1,5 years starting without any problems. Then I suffered from random freezes (monitor stayed on, LED stayed on without any change, ODD opened, but nothing happened, when I did any input; sometimes I got an Bluescreen pointing to a Processor issue). This issue solved with the new Bios. Nothing more to complain about. For cleaning the fan I usually use things like (beware, it is german :) ):
Reinigung Druckluft Spray - Dosierbare Sprühstärke: Amazon.de: Elektronik

It is something like pressured air. Works good for me.
Since it was discussed: as far as I know, you can not plug those miniPCIe-SSDs in standard miniPCIe ports. They are made for Netbooks, which bring a non-standard miniPCIe port. Simple reason: standard miniPCIe ports bring the lanes for PCIe and USB, in Netbooks they have additionally PATA and/or SATA lanes. I did not find any miniPCIe-SSD with integrated controller, that would fit to standard miniPCIe like in the n71jq.
But I would like to bring the disscussion back to a secondary HDD for the X1. Would this part be the needed one? HDD Board Unfortunately, there is still no picture.

    Have a nice day

    Dennis

It is the front port on the right side. Mine is blue.

I think Turbo and others looked into this and found that ASUS does not sell the part supperately. I thought that the N71JQ-X1 had 2 HDs from the factory. I have the A1 which came with a BR combo drive and 2 year warrantee. I could have this confused because I fallow the N61JQ thread as well.

    Hi,

in my N71 the USB3.0 port is as well at the right side, next to the microphone jack. It has a flat blue insert (USB2.0 is gray or black).
    N71jq-X1 - 1HDD+DVD (mine is black)
N71jq-X2 - 640GB HDD, maybe two, I am not sure+DVD (mostly seen in brown)
    N71jq-A1 - 2HDD+BluRay

So, there is still the question, if this HDD Board is the only missing part, or if one would need something else. I do nor know, what this HDD board actually is, and if the mainboard of the X1 still has the needed "plug".

    Bye

Hi. I've been following these boards for a while, and I'm a proud owner of a N71JQ-X1 as well. I also have been trying to find an option to add a second hard drive.

    I just looked at:

    N71JQ-2A

Now I know that the laptop code is called N71JQ-2A

but if you look underneath your N71JQ regardless of version, the ASUS lable shows me this information:

    MODEL: N71J
    MB VER: N71JQ ID:2A

which makes me think to the conclusion that this link (which is filed underneath parts for N71JQ-2A - HDD Board)

    HDD Board

just might be the answer to installing a 2nd hard drive on X1 models. I'm not too tech savvy, but thats what I think. Anyone that can help me verify?

Anybody else have a non-functioning subwoofer? I posted a comment to Asus tech support and they suggested I go to BIOS, select default settings, and save. Didn't fix it. Then I thought maybe when it was in for RMA motherboard replacement they may have neglected to hook it back up. But if nobody elses is working it might be software or audio driver issues.

The subwoofer looks fake to me. Even if it does work I really doubt that it will do much. I bought a pair of Numark 4" studio monitors for 100 bucks, it's like night and day. Yah; I know, you can't take them with you.

    Hi,

i found this thread: Sub-woofer problem in Asus N71JQ - Windows 7 Forums
The opener said, the stuff mentioned there would help, but it did not in my case. I do not hear anything from the "built in sub" (control panel-hardware&sound-sound-right click to speaker-configure-change to 5.1 and deactivate everything except front and sub)

    Bye

I am a proud owner of the N71JQ for 11 months now.

I am considering booting to the RECOVERY partition to reset my ASUS to like it was when I got it.

My question is, will the DATA D drive be reformatted during this process or can I count on the files I have on there being there after the recovery process?

I'd like to think YES but my gut says NOT A CHANCE

please let me add that I have the model with the 500 GB HDD. Just a single drive with 3 partitions...the recovery plus C and D. That's how it came.

Okay, so... every time I shut down my computer, I'm slowed by ACMON.exe needing a while longer than all else to shut down. I know this is some Splendid Video thing of ASUS's, and I cannot for the life of me find a way to disable it.

    Any help?

I can uninstall it, but I was hoping for a method to just turn it off. Ah well. Not sure what good it's doing, anyway.

    give Soluto a try

    Soluto ? Anti-Frustration Software

nifty freeware program and community that analyzes your start-up programs and gives you suggestions of what you can keep, delay, or just pause entirely.

try pausing that program using it. I just paused mine as well. If it causes problems, just use soluto to put it back in boot or delay it.

You will probably want to pause ASUS's FastBoot program using Soluto as well. Since Soluto does the same thing but may do a better job.

Soluto itself slows down boot time, but since you will be delaying and pausing lots of programs, it more than makes up for it.

It's worth a try. It's spyware free and well-received by the PC crowd. I like it a lot.

    Hello everyone,

I've owned an N71JQ-X2 for almost a year now, and recently, my battery wear has been going all over the place(from 30% to 50% and now 60%, in less than a week)

Does anyone know how to calibrate the battery in the N71?

Just a side note: A year ago, when I got my laptop, it would go up to be in the high 55C-60C when browsing for a few hours, and it reached 70C with a game open, after affects, many chrome tabs, and windows media player. Now it goes up to 70 in regular browsing, and nearly 80C on high performance situations. I'm going to try blowing a can of compressed air, as was previously suggested, hopefully that does something.

my battery does the same thing. owned laptop for roughly a year as well. I think its just the battery crapping out. really don't feel like dropping the chunk of change to replace it. I didn't get this to be very portable anyway.

Dust seems likely to be the problem. Compressed air does the trick. I'm lucky enough to have a 1.5 HP craftsman compressor so I spray the crap out of it every now and then without relying on those expensive cans. But it definitely helps. Only thing better is opening it up to clear out the blockage which I'm not ready to do on this rig yet. Once it gets older and Im closer to done with it maybe.

also, consider searching this forum and updating your bios if you havent done so already. you can do it from the asus product support site. That corrects overactive fan issues which can lead to more dust being sucked in faster. But of course, work on clearing the dust out first to see if that does the trick.

I already have the latest bios, and the fan of course runs better. I'll try the compressed air trick sometime in the coming week. As for the battery, I think I might just end up getting my battery replaced. Its under warranty, and I think its safe to say no battery can go up by 42% wear in a week. In just one day, from my last post to this, my battery wear has gone up 7%. This doesn't seem normal.

I too did not get this to be portable, but its gotten to the point where its just ridiculous. I can't go for more than 30 minutes without it either shutting down or hibernating.

Just curious if you have tried this Asus calibration utility that replaces what used to be in the BIOS:

    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/nb/battlfm.exe

Some basic instructions can be found here (about three or four posts down):

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- Poor Battery Life Issue

While I haven't needed it yet, I'd be very happy for somebody else who does to try it first and report the results! ;)

    Hey folks,

It been a while since I've been here (no news is good news), hope you're all doing well.

I have the weirdest problem with my lappy since yesterday. Out of nowhere, the wireless adapter switched off and hasn't been willing to switch on since. The driver is installed correctly and when I plugged in another wireless mini-PCI it also installed fine but does not switch on.

    Anyone recognises this problem? Help!

No, there it shows as enabled, however pressing Fn+F2 only gives Wireless LAN off...

It's definitely not the card btw, that still works in another laptop

You say the driver is installed correctly. How can you tell? By what Device Manager says? Have you tried deleting and then reinstalling the driver?

Also, have you tried to ping 127.0.0.1 to see if the system is seeing the card?

(Be sure, when you open the command prompt, to "Run as Administrator.")

If you get a normal response to the ping (e.g. Reply from 127.0.0.12: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128), then you know that the problem is with your connection setup.

What do you get when you run ipconfig /all at the command prompt (again, as an Administrator)?

Is this happening with only one wireless access point? Have you tried with others?

You did try reseating the card in question, right?

I think we need to know all of what you have already tried, otherwise we have to troubleshoot systematically...

What do you mean by battery wear? Do you mean %charge?

    How do you check it?

    Thanks

    Dave

I had this issue once, it turned out to be Kaspersky Internet Sceurity. If there is a checkbox in your network adapter properties for antivirus, just uncheck it and save settings. Then go back and recheck again. On another occation I had to remove and reinstall wireless consol 3. A couple of things to try anyway.

    Dave

post #6 covers the battery wear thing pretty good.

    Cary_Ader and Dave,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Since I couldn't figure out what was wrong, I decided in the end it was easier to remove my main OS, and restore an old image from my second OS drive. Advantage of having 3 HDs :)

Somehow the wireless card is working again... I'm not touching that Fn-F2 button ever again that is for sure!

Maybe it was related to some power management issues:

Hey guys. I own one of the N71JQ models and I was wondering how would I go about cleaning out the dust from the inside of my laptop and make sure that none of my warranty gets voided.

It seems like it's running a bit too hot for my tastes. Anybody get 90+ temps from their CPU from at least one core in any game and and 90+ for all cores when playing crysis (without a fan pad)?

Also I'd prefer other methods of cleaning over using a can of compressed air (damn near impossible to find).

Yes and no. Acronis uses a proprietary file format so it is not exactly the same, but they are both used for the same purpose. I have always used Acronis True Image and it works very well for me, so I have not bothered with whatever ASUS provides.

I always do a clean install of Win 7 then add all of the drivers from the ASUS CD or website. I purposley leave out all of the ASUS applications except Wireless Consol 3.

If you upgrade to a SSD do not image it from a HD, because Windows configures itself differently for a SSD.

I have used True Image Home 11 on XP Pro 32 bit and Win7 32 and 64 bit with no problems. In fact I just love this tool, because you can browse and retrieve files from the archives. I work on a lot of other peoples comps; the first thing I do is to image the hd. This tool has saved my butt in a lot of different ways.

my adapter no longer works. I bought a new adapter, that is not the problem. The port?? where the adapter plugs in will not recognize that the adapter is plugged in. Now my battery has run down and I have no way to charge it, thus, no laptop.

My GF's N71JQ screen seems to be pooched (cracked LCD). There may be an issue with the 1 year accidental as we are having trouble finding the confirmation number. Anyone have advice for replacing the screen? If ASUS says we'd have to pay, how much do you think they would charge to replace? I might be able to do it myself but can't find any guides to doing so. Thanks

Help w/ keyboard replacement, please.. I've had a TigerDirect N71JQXT1 for about six months. One of the keycaps broke off a while ago, and I'm finally getting around to trying to install the new keyboard ASUS sent me. I've lifted off the keyboard using instructions in the disassembly guide referred to elsewhere in this thread. Sadly, the guide is vague about how to unlock the keyboard cable connector under the keyboard, and I've never dealt with one of these before. Can anybody point me to clear instructions or offer some help on how to safely manipulate the lock pins. Really don't want to trash the MB :-/ Thanks, Steve

Answered my own question. For anyone w/ same issue, the brown plastic tabs on the ends of the white cable connector slide straight to the left when looking down on the motherboard / connector; i.e. in the direction in which the cable leaves the connector. The tabs slide less than 1/8" away from the connector. Probably best to use a plastic tool rather than the small metal screwdriver I used... Thanks.

    Hello,

I've bought my N71JQ in 2010 May, the overheating problem became very annoying in the last 3 months. This is the only forum where this problem was discussed in detail.

I've tried to read the whole forum, but its so long, filled with random chatter as well.

Is there any kind of solution for the overheating problem? I'm using this notebook for gaming, so it'd help a lot since cpu reduces performance when it overheats causing severe lag in most games. I've flashed the BIOS to 2.08, but the only improvement is that Windows 7 64bit doesn't shut down automatically anymore, and the fan became a bit louder.

    Please help.

EDIT: Also, I can't seem to find the settings in BIOS to configure Turbo Boost and such for the CPU.

Thanks so much, it really helped. The mainboard was a pain to remove, but I could clean the fan thoroughly and the performance increased tenfold. Also no more burning hot keyboard.

I also took apart the fan and oiled it a bit. I wonder if its possible to improve the cooling system even more.

I probably wouldn't have oiled it if it has bearings in it - Bearings need grease rather than oil, but don't worry, you haven't damaged it at all.

To get it even cooler, sit the laptop on something that raises it at least an inch above the surface it's normally sitting on. In my case it sits on a desk & I have it raised but I also cut a hole in the desk top & mounted another fan in it & I place the laptop over it. You can also use a purchased cooling pad, same idea. My internal fan hardly kicks in at all these days.
