I seem to have a single dead pixel on my screen and I am trying to decide if its worth thinking about sending for repair...

I saw there was quite a few programs for attempting to fix dead pixels do these work? or is there something else to try?

There is an Asus repair center pretty close by, might I be able to take it there to get the screen swapped?

Also: Does anyone have any recommendations for cooling pads? Do the ones that absorb the heat and change state work at all?

Any suggestions on sleeve style carrying case for this thing?

    Cheers!

My N71JQ needs powering up twice. First time the leds are blinking for a couple of seconds and the light of the power button remains on.
After turning the power Off and On again all works fine.

Can I try something or just RMA?

My bluetooth and webcam are working 10 minutes, sometimes half an hour, with no problems. And after that, they are nowhere to be found. Not even in device manager. They are disconnected (I can hear the disconnect sound). After restart or hibernating they are back on-line, again for limited time.

I have checked in device manager during their presence for updates and if they are working properly, but no errors could be found.
I have reinstalled both drivers(all recomended from asus tech support) and the problems are still there.
I`m quiet sure that my laptop is virus free(using : nod32, malware, trojan remover)
I also experience noise described in the post below:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...-asus-n71jq-owners-lounge-33.html#post5977294

If somebody has a clue, what is going on here, please let me know.

Check your power saving options in control panel. Also there is a setting in the driver properties that says something like allow OS to turn this device off. Clear the check box to see if it makes any difference.

    Dave

Remove the power cable if it is plugged in and remove the battery. Leave the battery out for about 15 minutes then put it back in and see what happens. If this does not fix it contact ASUS for service.

I didn`t find anything useful in power options...but I`ve changed the driver properties(power management), like you said, and they are working longer than usual now :)
I`ve changed them in bluetooth drivers and in generic usb hub(for webcam and bluetooth), which can also be shut down by itself.
I didnt`t try the third option...

    DaveSwan you saved the day,

    Greetings from Slovenia.

"unable to start bluetooth stack service"

I received a brand new N71JQ from Asus (see my thread "Asus crap warranty repair" if you want to know why)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...air-theyve-had-my-computer-month-already.html

Anyway, it was working fine, but now whenever I turn it on I get the above error message popping up. What I did do just before was disable some startup programs, so that's the most likely cause, but I can't figure out which it might be. Anyone know? I suppose I could turn the whole lot of them back on and see if it gets fixed...

PS I think I've had this problem before, but I can't remember how I solved it, nor have I been able to easily find anything by searching.

I had that problem with my original N71JQ. A local Asus authorized dealer (when I was visiting NY) replaced the CD-DVD writer with a new one that they ordered from Asus - and it still didn't work! Come to think of it, I haven't even tried that out on my new replacement N71 yet. Good grief - I'd hate to go through with having to return it to them again - a month and a half last time!

I've got a new wireless card, installed it fine, but while in there, I noticed there was an empty mini-pci express slot. Is it normal? What could I put in there?

Ah; you noticed that too. Well you could put one of those mini PCIe SSDs, but I think they are not worth the price per performance. Turbo had some other idea, but he never really said what it was. I put a HD hardware decoder in my netbook, but I doubt this Laptop needs one because it has a much more powerful GPU. The other reason that is there is because some WIFI card are full length.

I've checked those SSD. Big price, poor performance compared to regular one. maybe next year some new tech will come out :)

    Hi All,
Just got my N71JQ about a week ago. So far, love it with a few exceptions. They are:
1 - No sound from subwoofer, and this laptop is supposed to have great sound. When I go into Realtek HD Audio Manager, and play the test tones under 5.1 speaker configuration, there is no sound when it gets to the subwoofer. If I set it to "Swap Center/ Subwoofer Output", it seems to get a little better but really is no better than regular laptop speakers. Also, if I go into Control Panel, Sound, right-click on Speakers, then Configure Speakers, once again the test tones play on left and right speakers, but nothing when I press on "Sub". Appreciate if someone could check their settings under Realtek and Control Panel and let me know if theirs is working.

2 - Like many, I'm not so impressed with the webcam. I use it for Skype and people say it lags and has very low frame rate. I don't see where a fix was ever found, or am I just missing it?

3 - Fan cycling on and off, which isn't every 5 or 7 seconds like some people, but more like 5 seconds on and 30 seconds off. Doesn't really bother unless it's really quiet in the house, then I begin to notice it. I know that the latest Bios v. 208 has apparently remedied that situation, but my laptop came with v. 207 and I would rather not risk the bios flash just for that unless it solves some of the other issues. Advice?

Thanks in advance, it's great to have this body of knowledge to help us new owners. :)

"laptop is supposed to have great sound. "

It does? The sound on mine is weak and pathetic.

I've flashed the bios on two of these with no problem, and I'm no computer whiz. Cured the fan cycling problem.

Right, sound is weak and pathetic on mine also, because the subwoofer doesn't seem to put out sound. Is it just sales hype, or has someone been able to get theirs to work? If working, please post your settings in Realtek HD Audio Manager and under Control Panel / Sound.

Also, wondering if anyone has solved the webcam framerate issue. Sorry, if I missed it, but couldn't see a solution yet. Thanks.

    Dear Anybody,

I'm going out of my mind and need serious help. I own the n71jq-x1 and want to install a second hard drive. I purchased one and went to mount it and no luck seeing that some kind of adapter is missing. After searching forums online I found this thread with some info about a site in Europe for the elusive "Hard Disk Board" but it's for another model... perhaps it will work. My question is manifold.

Has anybody successfully installed a second hard drive? If so how?
Has anybody ordered the part from the European site?

I've even received an RMA, took it to the Notebookshop.com nearby and even they are stumped. It looks almost like a case of false advertisement. Two ASUS reps say I should be able to simply insert the new drive. The notebook tech said that even if I had the hard disk board there seems to be no easy was to install it without completely dismantling the computer which I have no idea how to do... this sucks. I feel thoroughly cheated, even though I love the laptop thus far, I have no desire to resort to an external for my storage needs. Any thoughts would be so kindly appreciated.

    Mike

Are you sure that you have a N71JQ-X1, because I thought they all came with 2 HDs. There should be 2 bays both with a SATA connector. If the only thing missing is the drive caddy/bracket then put some small pieces of foam to hold it in place. Make sure you leave as much space as possable for cooling. I read about somebody in the N73JQ thread doing this and it worked.

    Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I definitely have the x1. There are two bays, but no sata connector for the second bay. TurboGear has posted on it here and there in this thread but I have yet to see if anybody has had success with the 2nd hdd in the x1.

    Yeah,

Trubo looked into this and found that there was some part (sata connecter) that was not available supperately. You might want to contact GenTech, because they have good connections with ASUS. I think Turbo already tried this and got no where. It is a shame, because this laptop becomes awsome with a SSD as the primary drive and a large fast HD as the second drive.

Agree with observations in thread thus far. No sound from the port. Even tried Dolby 5.1 encoded sound from a DVD. The Swap Center / Subwoofer Output mentioned before appears to be a mix of left and right played through both left and right speakers. No matter what, can't get sound from the subwoofer. I think we were sold a bill of goods on this. Also have the framerate issue with the webcam, although it does seem to improve a little in a well-lighted environment. Still pretty laggy.

Ok, thanks Az Wx Guy, at least I know it's not just my machine. Had hoped it would have had better sound, like the Dell and HP laptops with subwoofer, but I guess not.

As far as the webcam, mine is listed as a Sonix which isn't even listed on the Asus support downloads page for the N71JQ, although it does have the same PID number and driver number ( Version v5.8.54000.0 ) as the Azurewave Camera Driver listed, so I assume it is the same and no point in updating. And yes, framerate does seem to improve a little under bright lighting, so I guess that's the best we can expect with it unless someone has found another fix.

On the bright side, I did successfully update to bios v.208 and the fan cycling is cured, so that's a good thing.

Well, now on the downside, I just tried to register my new N71JQ for the Asus Accidental Damage Warranty, but it said: "We’re sorry to inform you that your ASUS notebook computer is not qualified for this ADW program, because your ASUS notebook computer may be either subject to different product warranty terms or the purchase of your ASUS notebook computer was made prior to Sept. 10, 2007. For example, some retailers require notebook vendors to provide one-year product warranty only for notebooks."

So, in the fine print on the registration page I now see, "These retailers are currently among the companies that do NOT participate in the ASUS 360 Notebook Service Program and Accidental Damage Warranty: Best Buy, Best Buy Canada, OfficeMax, Staples, Costco, and The Source by Circuit City in Canada." Well, guess what - I purchased my laptop through Costco, so apparently it does not qualify for the 1 year ADW nor the 2 year 360 Global Warranty. That sucks! Well, at least there is the 90 day return period with Costco. "So I got that goin' for me, which is nice". (Bill Murray, Caddyshack) :(

Don't blame ASUS. I would bet that BestBuy and others demanded this so they can push their extended warrantees. They make a lot of money on them.

I bought my N71JQ-A1 from JR.com and registered it within 30 days so I got 2 years of ADW. Keep in mind that the ADW warrantee is a one time only deal. Buy a good bag and take care of your laptop and it will not matter.

The biggest issue with laptops is theft so treat it like it holds nucular codes or something.

    Hi Guys,

I have a problem. My Wifi does not turn on when using my front switch and
F2 function key. I purchased the computer from XOTIC PC about a year ago with the upgraded Intel Advanced-N 6200 wireless card. System restore did not solve my problem. Any pointers/tips/links would be appreciated here.
    Thanks.

I upgraded to the intel 6200 myself and I learned a couple of things in the process. Uninstall and reinstall Wireless consol 3. If you are using Kaspersky KIS 2011 go into the wifi adapter properties and clear the Kaspersky checkbox and save the properties you should get a couple of MS miniport adapers, then go back into the same propertis and reenable Kaspersky. This could happne with other security suites as well.

If you need any settings I have the same card and it works like it should.

I have found that if you use the middle socket, the one intended for SPDIF, the noises are gone. I think Turbogear posted something about this a while back. Has something to do with poor shielding on that particular line which passes close to a hard drive and picks up noises from it.

    Hi!

After a year of use, I now have quite hot CPU temperatures as shown here :

It regularly reaches 100° and my laptop shut down on its own...

More, when I play some 3D games, my FPS are fine at the beginning, and dramatically drop down to an unplayable 5 fps :/

I've installed the last bios 208 and also the last Mobility Catalyst 10.11 drivers.

Did I miss some tweaks or driver updates?

You need to clean the ventalition system. Dust and lent builds up inside the laptop over time. Take some canned air and blow it into the outlet on the side. I looked at mine and I do not see an easy way to get to the fan. If you cannot find more in this thread check the N61JQ thread, because it is very simmular and that thread is much more active then this one.

Programs and features in the control panel to remove, then the drivers disk to reinstall.

I haven't posted here in a while but wanted to share my experience with you all. I had an issue where the screen was getting "fuzzy" so I contacted tech support and was given an rma. I sent my machine in and they replaced the LCD unit. I recieved the machine back with dirt behind the plastic screen and the speakers not working as well as the wireless signal bieng very low. I called back in and was given a second rma. After the repair and I recieved the machine back again, the techs lost some of the original packing that came with the laptop and the lcd was cracked. I called in again and was given another rma. When I recieved it this time some of the keyboard keys were not functioning and the sound card was not showing up in windows as well. The special function keys near the speakers were dead and some of the "F" keys did not work. Almost 3 months 4 different RMAs 2 LCD units a wireless card a keyboard and a motherboard later I finally got a working laptop. Throughout this time I was hung up on and lied to by the customer service reps and supervisors. Just a warning to anyone thinking of sending their unit in for warranty service.

    Yep, Fixit, I know.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...air-theyve-had-my-computer-month-already.html

Though I did finally - after 1,000 phone calls - get a brand new computer.

But when you blow in canned air aren't you just blowing the dust deeper into the machine?

They told me as long as it can be fixed they will fix it. They would not send me a new machine. Which repair facility did they have you send it to? Mine was in Indiana. Last time in was to California.

Hopefully not. The idea is to get it to go back out the way it came in. I will say on this model it looks like it could just get spread arround. Most laptops have a access panel over the fan assembly so you can take it out and clean it. This one does not, unless it is under the keyboard. Still there is a copper heat sink just inside the outlet on the left side. If you blow canned air in there it will clear dust and lint out of the heat sink itself which is what matters. The problem may come back especially if there is a good bit of lint in there. I fix computers for a lot of other people and I cannot believe how much lint builds up in some of them.

I will look into this further, cause sooner or later I will need to clean mine too.

    Edit

OK, The fan is under the keyboard. You need the Disassembly Manual: http://hotfile.com/dl/84397985/b319264/Disassemble_N71VN_Series_Chapter_02-v1_0.pdf.html to get to it.

The above link is from Trubo's Keyboard mod, so thanks to him and GenTechPC for that fine work.

    End Edit

Yes I beleive so. You have to make the crad bootable, (google for that) and set the boot option in the BIOS screen.

Not in my experience, because dirt/lint builds up on the leading edge of the heat sink fins. You really cannot pull it the rest of the way through, it just gets stuck tighter.

The problem is that a lot of the air is drawn through the keyboard. There is a small air vent on the bottom, you could try vacumming that and blowing air in the outlet.

"The problem is that a lot of the air is drawn through the keyboard."

That brings up another question. Since my beer on and into keyboard mishap, and since receiving the new computer from Asus, I have covered the keyboard with a plastic cover that I ordered from EBay. Do you think that covering the keyboard like that has any adverse effect on cooling? I haven't noticed any problem. (It does, however, have an adverse effect on typing.)

Try to pick it up when the laptop is running. If it clings to the keyboard like it is being sucked down then it could be an issue. Also check your temps with and without it.

It sounds like you are ok.

No, I don't think there was any suction. In fact the cover just tended to come loose until I taped down the edges. I don't think there's any problem, except, as I said, it makes the typing worse. The cover does seal up the keyboard for spills - except liquids can get through all those little holes above the keyboard, and probably the touch pad, too.

One other idea would be to get a piece of thin filter material from a PC mod shop and attach it over the vent on the bottom of the laptop.

Nope, but I see an option for that in the BIOS.

Has anybody had problems with the express card ports on these? I am having trouble keeping a connection with my SIIG FW card on mine.

Awesome laptops BTW. I got mine to replace my aging and hotrodded 7 yr old eMachines M6805.
