If you have NotebookFanControl up and running, with the N550JV profile selected, opening the NotebookFanControl window should alow you to modifiy the Target Fan Speed manually, by moving the slider from the Auto position. You can move it to 100% and see if the fans rev up, and then move it to 0% and observe if the fans turn off completely after a while (both noise and airflow stop). The fans have low acceleration and deceleration, wait for settings to take effect.

If the software is working correctly and you're still having these issues, all you can try is BIOS update... and then warranty service.

I'm using the same SSD as you, never had the issue.

Your fans are off. If you have enabled some kind of fan control rules/options in Speed Fan, you might want to undo them and reset your system.

HI everyone, I just picked up the touchscreen version of this laptop and am planning to use it primarily at home as a desktop replacement with dual monitors.

There was a discussion earlier in this thread about the presumed life span of the battery if this is always plugged in. What was the consensus regarding this? UNplugg and let the battery drain regularly or forget it and leave it continuously plugged in? Thanks.

Thanks for the screenshot, meawhile I also found the 850M spec page from NVidia.

If you only use the laptop for less than an hour a day you might consider unplugging the laptop. Otherwise the stress from multiple discharges will probably be greater than the stress of keeping the battery over 95% charged.

You can also opt for removing the battery. In this case, remove the battery while charged at 60% and store in the... fridge :)

    Hi All,
I'm using N550jv and i've added a new HDD(sata3) into my laptop by caddy bay. But when I check it by crystal disk info, it shows the HDD is using at sata2 (sata 300) like the image below. (the caddy i'm using supports sata3). Has anyone experienced this problem ? or the sata port at ODD only supports SATA2 mode ?

That's because your HDD is SATA II. As a matter of fact, most HDD can't even reach the SATA I top speed.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. It won't charge until the battery drain to less than 95%. Use it once every couple of weeks you will be fine.

Well, it's actually a little more complicated than that. Windows 8 and onward have the product keys built into the bios, so the windows install disc will automaticallty see them and use them. The problem is that you need an retail disc, and your computer didn't come with one, an you cant download one from Microsoft without a retail key. So your best bet is probably to borrow a retail disc from a friend... maybe one with the initials B.T. Then follow the instructions laid out here: installation - Clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 from OEM key - Super User. You also may be able to skip the steps of using the generic key (I was able to do so; the install accepted the OEM keys embedded in the BIOS).

No, My HDD is SATA 3, if i move the HDD to primary slot, it runs at sata 3 mode, but if i put it in caddy bay, it's sata 2. I know that HDD is limited by speed, i just wanna make sure if the odd sata port is sata 2

I'm soo eager to see the gaming results on Asus 550JK having massive Nvidia 850m.
I request you 550jk owner's to have some fps test in latest games i.e. Battlefield 3/4 etc.
I also wish asus this time includes msata support with 550JK.

I don't know how what you have described makes it more complicated, but it's good to know embedded OEM keys are accepted after installing with a retail image and a generic or temporary key.

The best option, if available at the time of purchase, is still to buy the laptop without Windows and purchase a separate OEM license.

That screenshot you posted does not make me think the ODD is running in SATA 2 mode.

Take a look at this screenshot with a SATA 2 HDD:
    sata300.png

Im my screenshot the only transfer mode available is SATA 300. In your case you have both SATA 300 | SATA 600.

    Thanks for your advice.
I like your idea, too bad the store where I buy laptop have only one N550JK, and it has preinstalled Windows 8.1

I play games occasionally, the main reason I buy this for graphic design and physics effect.
By the way, using Geforce Experience software optimizing games:
In Dota 2, (all max setting), 60 FPS, it only down to 55 when combat is big or the explosion in the end.
In Starcraft 2, (nearly everything is ultra), 40-55 FPS depend on what happening, the more units and explosion, the lower FPS
In Shogun 2, (some low, some ultra), 40-58 FPS, same SC2, more units = lower FPS
In Skyrim, (not everything max), 25-60 FPS, well, for this I have no explanation.

In each game, I play 1 hour and the GPU grow heat a lot, about ~72 degree. The keyboard around f8 &f9 get hot and it is uncomfortable to touch those key a lot

I'm consfused @@ if i put the HDD into primary slot, it runs sata 3 mode, so the HDD is not the problem. If i put the another caddy bay in my laptop, it's still running at sata 2 mode. If I put an SSD (sata3) in caddy bay, it runs at sata2 mode. So, what's the problem guys ?

The ODD runs off an SATA2 connector, so if you install a HDD in a caddy where the ODD was, you will get SATA2 speeds.
Your 750GB HDD supports both SATA2 and SATA3 interface, but in reallity you will never go over SATA2 speed ( 300 MB/s ) with a harddrive. But with a SSD, you will get the most out of it installing it in a SATA3-port (main HDD slot)

So its like you said in your original post, the port at the ODD only support SATA2

    Thanks for your reply!

I would like to put an ssd in Caddy bay, but it only runs at sata2 so i have to put it in HDD slot, and put the HDD in Caddy bay. The problem is the order of disks, SSD (primary slot) is disk 1 and HDD (in caddy bay) is disk 0, of course i'm running os on ssd so Partition C is on Disk 1 and the others on disk 0, It's a litle bit uncomfortable. I dont know why the primary slot is sata port 4 and ODD slot is sata port 2 ? take a look at the image below.

You may need to disconnect other drives, leaving the drive you wish to have the OS on.
Use recovery discs to restore OS onto the drive, then reconnect the rest of drives afterwards.

Is there a way to change the order of drives ?

The fan has kicked in at pace/with noise this eve. System running at around 35-40 degrees so the system does not need a fan on at high speed..

I have tried notebookfancontrol and moved the slider down to 0 (with the Asus N550JV profile selected). I have not noticed any drop in fan speed/ noise since moving the slider 30 mins ago, so I guess that the app is not working correctly.

    Hey guys,

Just bought the ASUS R552JV. Apart from a broken spacebar upon arrival (which i fixed) I updated to Windows 8.1 and have had a few issues. The first was the please wait screen others have had (i fixed this by making a new account in safe mode then logging into that).

The remaining problem is that when i shutdown, windows appears to shutdown, then the keyboard and power light stay on for about 3 mins before it turns off...i read on another forum someone else had this issue, but no fix....

I've, updated to 208 bios, but issue still present. Suggestions?

I just bought the n550jv and so far I love it however, the ctrl and shift on the left are hard. To press and it seems to be a construction thing.

Anyone have the same when their lappy was new? If not, I'll have to call for an exchange.

Hoping they just loosen up though

    Thanks!

Sorry to hear that, I'm afraid I have no other suggestion to make. Maybe you should consider a warranty replacement, although you might want to record what happens on video before you attempt that.

Engineers may not be able to replicate the bug, as it's a rare event.

HELP!!! I have spent many fruitless hours attempting to migrate from the pre-installed HDD to an SSD to no avail. I will document the steps I have followed and then where this process is failing for me.

    Successful Steps
    -------------------------
    1. Attached my clean SSD to my computer using a SATA to USB3 adapter.
    2. Cloned my HDD to the SSD using EaseUS Todo Backup.
    3. Removed my HDD from the system and installed the SSD.
    4. Attempted to boot to the new SSD which failed.

Now, I know why it failed. The new SSD boot partition is probably not setup correctly.

I attempted to follow the instructions here to remedy that:

How can I repair the Windows 8 EFI Bootloader? - Super User

This does not work for me. When I do the step "bootrec /fixboot". I get the following error message: "The system cannot find the path specified"

When I run bcdboot it seems like it outputs a message indicating whatever it did was successful yet when I try to boot from the SSD or view the partitions in the disk manager it is clear that I have not successfully create the boot partition.

I am so desperate to get this working. I've poured countless hours into this and my wife wants to kill me. If some boot partition genius out there could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Your best bet is to just do a clean install on the SSD. Take the time to install what programs you need then move any files you want from the HDD to SSD. It's going to save you lots of headache and wasting more time. We see more problems then not when trying to clone because SSD and HDD write data to sectors differently.

    Hi Playonline...

The new N550JK with GTX-850M just blew my mind and I'm returning my 14 days young N550JV-CN283H. I've found most new models on Amazon.de http://www.amazon.de and on the Swedish www.komplett.se.

Where did you buy yours? What model is it? www.notebookcheck.com N550JK

Could you please post a screendump of your GTX850 Nvidia control panel? Most settings in there where missing on the N550JV-CN283H!

    Thanks /SE9 :)

Hey guys. Bought an N550JV several months ago and it's been great. But all this Secure Boot crap has got me stuck. I thought I'd disabled it ages ago but going into the bios it's still enabled. I want to install my own copy of Windows 8.1 as I'm sick of driver errors and stuff, like I've done with all my previous laptops. But I need to know how to disable Secure Boot.

[Deleted rest of rant] Sorry I was in a frustrated and tired state when I wrote this post. All sorted now (mostly).

    Two questions:

    1. Does anyone know the rated SATA speed of the optical drive? The reason I ask is because I'm planning to use my machine for video editing and plan on replacing my DVD drive with a HDD caddy for multimedia storage. If it's SATA II, for example, then I won't bother investing in a 7,200 RPM performance drive.

    2. Is the GPU upgradable? I noticed, when I had the machine apart and applied new thermal paste to the components, that it looked soldered on. Some machines use PCI, but it doesn't appear that this machine is using that, but I'm unsure as to the upgradability or lack thereof.

Also, still no luck installing the card reader on Windows 8.1. I ended up disabling it in the Device Manager in order to stop the Action Center from notifying me constantly.

Also also, once in a while the Touch Keyboard will pop up in the tray even though I supposedly permanently disabled it. No idea what that's about. It's not a big deal, but annoying nevertheless.

Overall, I'm loving the machine. After installing the new thermal paste, a Samsung 840 Pro, and the Intel 7260HMW Wireless-AC, I'm squeezing a little more out of my battery and booting, loading, writing, and wireless internet are all bleedingly fast.

N550JK comes with 850m ... so far I am not aware of Asus equiping n550 with 860m. If am wrong, then pardon me.

    Hey

Does anyone know if I would be able to get a replacement laptop with the 1 year warranty?

I have the N550JV touchscreen and never use the touchscreen and would like the non-touchscreen version

There`s been few problems with the laptop (not shutting down, keys raised up and sticking and not straight, external speaker not working, big gap round trackpad, gap on dvd drive)

I got the laptop last september and I`m getting fed up with all the problems

    Cheers

I have the Error Code 43 on my GT750M nVidia GPU in Device Manager and the nVidia Control Panel won't open (popup window advises I am not connected to an nVidia GPU). I looked in the BIOS and under Graphic Options there is no mention of Intel or NVidia, or the ability to set "Auto" etc, only a setting about DVMT.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit and have the current Intel/NVidia drivers from the Asus website installed.

Is there a definitive answer on how to fix this that someone can point me to, or does it have to be sent back to Asus?

    Update system BIOS to 208.

    ====
Long time I've replied here. I've been using Apple for the last 6 or 7 years after owning several Asus notebooks.

I have an N550JV for about a month now and to be honest, I don't really like it. I fell for the design, but in reality I've never had any good experience with Asus laptops (A6Va, M6Va/Z7000) and again, my experience is not that good.

I have a few weird issues. For starters, the sound volume is very inconsistent. Meaning, it sometimes will lower itself automatically and I can't seem to find the reason for this. Already tried different drivers and played around with the settings. At first I though Skype was the culprit, but even if that's not running it occurs frequently.

Second, the WiFi is working fine 80% of the time, but when it doesn't work... it disconnects, or it won't connect at all. I had an exam at school where I needed Internet on my laptop, and just at that time it decides to not work. And no, it was not the school's network because everybody could access the WiFi without any issues. I can't trust this laptop. Also played around with drivers, clean install of Windows 8(.1) but nothing seems to help.

Also, the display bezel is coming loose at the bottom. I think I will send it in for repairs and when it's fixed sell it.

Not saying all Asus laptops are this bad, they are not. However, I always seem to have issues with them and that sucks. ;)

I bought it in Warsaw, Poland. Its model is N550JK-CN057H. The shop's name is X-kom n550jk - wyniki wyszukiwania - Sklep komputerowy - X-KOM.PL

And the Nvidia control panel: 1.jpg 2.png 3.png
