Risco, I just got mine back with a new motherboard from my bios flashing fiasco. Is there anything you want me to check about my SLIC. If so direct me to where I can find it.

Good work vtar. Keep us posted.
-
Yeah can ya get lavalys everest then under then look under the ACpi section in motherboard and see if it mentions Slic. There was a post a couple of pages back where turbo told me what to do. Hard to remember without being in front of my computer.

Ally, check this post for instructions

has anyone gotten asus to repair the peeling rubber coating under warranty?
-
Ok. Yeah, it'd be nice to actually know how high this lap goes in terms of power consumption in stock vs overclocked settings(with individual power consumptions also listed). Hope, someone does that

andy5224, what you give here is really bad advice.
This quote is from one of the senior engineers at ASUS:
"We never suggest a registry edit to change the SATA mode behavior. There can be unforeseen things that will happen if they do it that way for Win 7. If the user is upgrading the license or doing a clean install, yes, setting it to ACHI is what they have to do for full performance, but it should already be done in the BIOS on the first fresh install and not through a registry edit. The system should already be set to ACHI as default as it already incorporates Win7 from us when originally shipped." -

Hello ALL quick help pls..
Recently I've been downloading tons of movies, I leave to work and the laptop stays on, the last three days when I got back its frozen. Absolutely nothing works, I have to hold down the power button to restart. Anybody have an idea how to find the problem? I rarely shut it down and had never had any issue until this week, its weird because I get no hangs while im using it, not sure if maybe its something with it staying idle or something..
Thanks! -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Do you close the lid when you leave it? If you do...don't, it needs to breath through the keyboard and it is probably overheating and shutting down. -
I don't know what you mean by tweaking the link. I went to the link you provided and it was a 6 cell battery. Of course we all want a 9 cell battery. But wanting it does not make it so. I have spent many hours researching this and I believe there is none and won't be one. We had one of our trusted resellers who have direct contact to Asus report the same opinion. If you think (#ASUS 90-NQY1B2000Y N50 / N51 9-Cell Battery ) will work then buy it and let us know. We are all rooting for you to find us a 9 cell battery that works since no one else has been able to.
-
Yeah I keep it open, the first night I turned off the display and when I got back it was frozen, the last two nights I just left it on with the brightness set to low. I keep the AC on all day so its in a ventilated area. I suspected the temps but never had issues before. Is there a log file where can I see what happened?
-
Have you looked downwards in this section to see if there is a table with the name "SLIC: Software Licensing Description Table"?
What you have linked above is the first table in the ACPI section under Motherboard that is "APIC: Multiple APIC Description Table" . -
i dont know if someone remember my problem with the hitachi HDD...
i put a piece of plastic for make some space between the notebook and the HDD and i ajust the screws not too tight... and i have the notebook with no problem for a week now... -
what is your BIOS version ? -
The information I provided is from Microsoft. The registry key "Start" needs to be set to 0. We do this everyday in our Lab at work and have never had an issue. Rather, we've found problems enabling ACHI in the BIOS before telling the OS that this is enabled (BIOS registry key I provided).
MS gives the info Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"
I'm sure Asus means well but they don't know Microsoft's operating system as well as Microsoft and, as I said, this is proven good in our Lab (I do testing of equipment/applications, image creation, break/fix, etc in a corp setting). -

You miss the point.
All ASUS laptops have already had the Windows OS installed and the BIOS and registry are therefore already set up correctly.
If you are a competent lab tech you should know there is no reason for an end user to enter the Registry unless they too are competent technicians. You should NEVER advise an end user to enter the Registry or make any Registry key changes unless both of you really know what you are doing.
Your comments, frankly, show your immaturity with your profession. To suggest that ASUS "means well" but don't know what they are talking about (but of course you do) is absurd when it comes to their knowledge of their hardware and BIOS.
To all who are reading anyone's advice about making registry changes, be SURE to check with your manufacturer FIRST before taking any such advice. -
No sir, where my mistake was is too much scan-reading. I thought I saw where someone was going to make changes to the BIOS w/o looking at what needed to be done in the Registry. Now that I re-read it a little more thoroughly I see that this wasn't the case. I shall endeavor to be more careful in the future. *returns to lurk-mode where he gets in far less trouble!*

I've read a LOT of these posts, not all, so I apologize if this has been answered.
I'm pulling the trigger on the X1 sometime in the next week. I was also looking at the Zalman NC2000, but the NC1500 is a bit less expensive and says that it supports 17" notebooks. Does anyone know if the 1500 is sufficient for the N61JQ's?
From what I've been able to find, the NC1500 is only 13.6" wide, where as the notebook is 15.4 -- as I haven't held either of these items yet, I have no way of being sure.
If I need to get the 2000, I will, I just wasn't sure. Thanks! -
Don't waste your money on either. I have the 2000, and it is an awesome cooler, but it does nothing for this laptop. 1-2 degrees cooler max under load. The cooling design just doesn't benefit from flowing air over the back of the laptop.
In other news:
NEC USB 3.0 driver 1.0.20.0
USB 3.0 firmware 3.0.2.5 (unzip the file, go into the "\64" directory in an elevated command prompt, and run "FWupdate64.bat" to flash). -
Thanks as usual you are tha fastest when it comes to new drivers.
You should start a new thread where you put all these. In this thread if one does not visit for a few days then they are somewhere buried under this fast moving thread.
-
ye thanks for the drivers!
-
Check out the N61JQ driver thread
-
I think I speak for all the N61JQ owners when I give a big thanks to you stevedogg. You are providing a much needed service, one that I did not have the technical expertise to provide. Even if I did I just would be reposting what you were feeding us here. For we all know when you need a driver update for the N61JQ stevedogg is THE MAN!!!
Ps. I will post a link to this thread on the top of first page of this owners lounge. -
Turbogear, I went to bios/ACPI/APIC: Multiple APIC Description Table. Then I copied a picture of everything there. Is this the right location and if so does this mean I also am missing the SLIC.
Donald- any help on this? -
You rock, thanks for taking the time to put that together.
-
Any speed improvment with this firmware update ? or only compatibility ?
-
I didn't really notice any improvement. Transferring a 23 GB file to my external, it eventually settled to ~65 MB/s. It did seem to go faster for a longer time before that (started around 80-90 MB/s).
-
It should be under:
Everest->Motherboard->ACPI->SLIC: Software Licensing Description Table
If it is not there then it could be that everest is not able to display it in the N61JQ. It could be the case since Risco was also saying he could not see it under this section. -
Have the changelog for that USB3.0 FW 3.0.2.5? I need to know what it fixes.
Thanks -
Is there one that works well, or is it a better bet to not bother?
The machine will be sitting on a desk in an air conditioned room (~75F) most of the time anyway. -
I would say it's not necessary to get a cooler
-
I would just like to congratulate the US team for having deservedly past the first stage of the FIFA World Cup.
Turbogear well done also to the German team.
At least England managed to qualify
and I hope for a good match between Germany and England.
As for Italy
, such is life at least Italy have already won it 4 times, they are feeling generous this time round
.
-
Here is the changelog from Station Drivers. The driver is near the top, and the firmware is at the bottom.
-
I have a Win7 ultimate disk that I purchased for my previous laptop, would formatting the N61's HDD and installing a fresh copy of Win7 void the warranty?
-
Nope. You might want to keep the recovery partition just in case you sell the laptop or something and don't want to give away your Ultimate license.
-
This laptop does not benefit from a cooler because of its cooling design. It would be a waste of money, My cooler is nothing more than an expensive laptop tray.
-
Coolers work well when the bottom of the laptop gets hot; they basically flow air over the bottom surface, which can help remove heat (convection). So, if your laptop tends to cook your lap, you can expect a cooler to make a big difference. This laptop does not conduct heat down to the bottom surface; it stays cool on your lap. As such, the cooler does nothing except help air enter the inlets (grooves) on the bottom. Since most of the air just flows around the laptop and not into the grooves, the cooling effect is much less efficient than the fan inside the laptop, which sucks air into the inlets.
-
Thanks, guys.
I think I'll be 'pulling the trigger' sometime in the next week. I'm quite excited. -
Ally, did ya find out if the slic was I. Your bios for me?
-
I just bought 24" asus monitor. Hooked it up with hdmi. Connected wireless keyboard and mouse. Setup monitor only option and picked "close lid" option -"do nothing". Now I have perfect setup with 1920 X1080 rez. It looks beutiful and it works beutiful. I also have sling box hooked up to my directv. Now I even can watch tv on my lappy. I am very happy. Thank you for reading.

Be careful not to close your lid when the laptop is running. It needs to breath through the keyboard and if you close the lid don't be surprised if it overheats.
It is better to close the lid ALMOST all the way, just enough for the screen light to turn off but with enough of a gap to allow air flow. -
I'll second this. My old HEL80 functioned just fine with the lid closed, but when gaming with the lid closed on my N61JQ, it had problems with overheating and shutting down. Running it with the screen off but open solved the issue.
On another note, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and the machine isn't quite perfect yet. It doesn't suspend properly. Any Linux geeks out there have a list of drivers/updates for this machine? -
Thanks for advice. I kept it close for probably 4 to 5 hours. I have a CPU temp. on my desktop. Idle is about 60 and browsing and streaming it goes to 70. I guess it was not too bad, but i'll keep the lid little open.
-
It does not show up in everest. Is there any other way I can check for it?
Donald ,any ideas on this? -
Current BIOS is n61jq.209
-
Maybe some day the US can make a run at this. We know Italy will be back. It seems to me that the winner holds onto their players to long in appreciation for their efforts.
-
Donald, Is this just on the N61 or other Asus models.
-
